  • man, it kills, thx very much

  • very interesting video thanks

  • I like that bouncy duka duka stuff!

  • some sweet info here

  • i have a demo version of fl studio 10. will someone tell me what sound i need to use for a bass line of psytrance? and also may i use just an acid sound for a bassline the same way techno bass line is or i can't? please help

  • @askadetra In my experience usually an acid sound doesn't work for me but you can always try but with just a demo version you never going to get a real nice working bassline but if you want just take the 3xOsc and trow it on a saw form. Low and very short notes. Cutoff almost all the attack and release and just mess around with the rest of the envelope

  • @dilledilledilledille thank you very much. i like your short and clear lesson.

  • great !!!

  • A WhAT WAVE! l2speak

  • Thumbs up if you're a newbie and you watched the full video 2x :D

  • Hi

I have this problem which i hope you can help me.

I use live as rewire to logic but i can not change a beat 4/4 to 6/8. I mean a tempo BPM is answering between logic and live but not signature.

    Thanks

    Payam

  • theres only one thing wrong with this video.... actually like 3 things.

    1. you have to mention that you cant make this exact bassline sound without the tempo being 140. i tried making one at 126 and blew a couple hours.

    2. you have to mention that the dials have to be set Exactley to yours... any minor difference will result in missing a peak and it wont sound anywhere near as perfect as yours... instead it sounds encredibly amatuer. blew a couple hours :P

  • 3. it seems to me that midi tempo is different then song tempo.... if i leave the song tempo, and toy with the midi tempo.... it doesnt equalize. only an expert can have the 2 set up without hitting any work ending dead ends

  • doesnt sound like psytrance sorry

  • Best psy Bass-line tutorial on Youtube, without a doubt... Best narrator too... 100% comfortable voice, and you don't speak too slow or too fast (which tends to be a problem tutorial-wise these days). Thumbs up... ......oh.... and you got yourself a new subscriber btw xD

  • O M G ,absolutely amazing tutorial! You really know your stuff, inspiring. Ty

  • first usefull tutorial and i havent even tried it myself yet!!!

  • Wow nice tutorial, few guys do nice tutorials around here

  • That was by far the dopest bass tutorial I've ever seen!!

    Tom Cosm..U DA MAN!!

  • did you master it? mp3 available?

  • Realy well explained! Searched a lot of tutorials for a fat psytrance bassline and this one absolutely helped me out! Thx alot ;)

  • How did you chanced the loop from 1 bar to 4 so that later you just have to change it on one of the 4?

  • Awesome vid! Never learnt as much in 30 minutes!!!

  • Very Good stuff!! Thanks!! :D

  • Awsome stuff! Cheers bro! I learnt heaps from this :D

  • I've never learned so much in 30 mins.

  • Noice, he knows his stuff. Very much more helpful than other tutorials.

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • how is your space bar still alive?

  • Awesome, super informative

  • how much memory Ram use your Computer?

  • VERY CLEAR..tnx !!! I work with Pro-Tools and Cubase a lot and I still learned some stuff...(There is little real clear stuff on making Psy and Goa).I`m a Materia/Kox Box/Hux Flux fan and even on the forums it`s hard to get clear info on how they make these awesome sounds...Peace to you m8...and tnx again. ;)

  • Helpful ! great dude

  • Good work man !!

  • it doesn't seem like darkpsy would be all that much different... faster, lower, maybe a sine wave instead of a saw?... just use your ears.

  • thanks tom

it seems what you play to much...

  • Thank you so much €=-)

  • naaaiiiiiiiiice!!

  • of all the tuts have i seen,i've gained the most out of it.Not just learnt a psy bassline, but also the operator! Thanks for such an awesome tutorial!

  • Best Tutorials ever! Very In Depth and Clear instruction

  • Cool video! Very informative taught me lots of things I had never discovered about Live in general. Loving the kiwi accent too. :)

  • this deserves celebration thank you sir

  • I like how you can assign the velocity to the filter freq. Can this only be done with Operator, or can it be done in other synths as well? Thanks.

  • thanks man awesome tut

  • Great Tutorial :D

Keep on keeping on its gonna help a lot of people

  • You are an ableton god... keep it up, man! Such useful knowledge

    for all types of musicians.

    :)

  • Comment removed

  • I sometimes roll my eyes at the slow pace of these tuts, but the foundation of knowledge Tom builds makes for some really deep revelations! The eq sweet spot is just very cool, tom actually found a resonant frequency that was in tune, if not G itself. very cool!

  • 155 bpm for the win

  • so much knowledge! Your videos are really helpful tom, Hope one I day I am able to produce music at that level

  • Very VERY helpful, sir. Sub'd~

  • Thank you for tutorial ! Nice comment ! Waiting for more :)

  • Awesome tutorial, but isn't most of your time taken up playing Murray in Flight of the Conchords?

  • @ilove2mong cant be he didnt take the register ;)

  • @iluvtrance69 Yeah the audio engines different but personally I like both so its not really an issue, its the same thing as people preferring the the virus a-c over the ti ...personally I dont see it. Things were slightly moved around and the audio quality if anything is better, (higher definition) I guess some people doing like the actual sound of the synth haha

  • @iluvtrance69 They are both digital :/ but yeah I might as I need a new 4 octave keyboard so it might as well make sounds if its taking up room.

  • @iluvtrance69 Its either that or a nord lead 2/3 but getting my hands on a lead 3 is going to be tricky, people dont want to sell them as they are really wonderful to program.

  • @iluvtrance69 Well im pretty fluent in programming principals im just lacking a lot of experience in implementing it, I can solve problems but rarely am I sure its the most efficient solution. I will get better I am sure I am building a DAW for ipad at the moment and hopefully in the next few years will petition for an open standard plugin system for mobile devices like vst but not proprietary.

Yeah the Ti is a beautiful synth, I am thinking about getting a voyager soon aswell :)

  • @iluvtrance69

I think listening to alot of electronic music is one of the worst things you can do if you want an original sound you have to listen to everything but the music you are trying to create. the further away your influences the more chance you have of creating something fresh sounding and not genre specific. Its what im battling with now trying to make good dance music that doesnt fit in any genre or sub genre.

  • @iluvtrance69 I dont know i think handling formants well when time stretching audio is more complex...but thats probably only because there are so many c++ examples of moog filters out there you fall over them looking for other answers a lot of the time.

Ive never tried coding one from scratch, but then I havent really done a huge amount of DSP programming, only enough to build things that I need when there isnt an alternative.

    ...

  • @iluvtrance69 Great:D just send me a message with the link, I havent used myspace in ages. There are lots of emulations of moogs filter, my virus even has one :D and it sounds fantastic :D

  • @iluvtrance69 C as in the key or the programming language? I like both ...well I like C as much as any other key but yeah I use c and varients on it alot for my projects.

I do think moog filters are special but i dont think that moog synths are up to the task of rolling basslines, analogue synths tend not to be ...at least the ones with VCOs and VCFs there is also the phase issue with analogue gear. I love reaktor, but have been leaning more towards synthmaker,c++ & maxmsp for my dsp work

  • @iluvtrance69 Oh wait sorry I misread, I dont think ableton has a ladder filter you can use outside of its synths, but then I generally wouldnt use filters like that because they are in the wrong place in the signal path generally to get the results I need unless im just smoothing the sound out but sweeping out the harmonics.

  • @iluvtrance69 ...Shouted at him for it. Its a rompler. Its filter barely even effect the sound and its envelopes are horrible at least in nexus 1 i cant speak for 2 as I havent used it. I normally use Ace, Gladiator, Sylenth, analogue, VirusTI or basically if any other synth with tight envelops and a lowpass filter to make a bass. As im not looking to sound like other people when I write music. Have you got any music online?

  • @iluvtrance69 ...Its been common knowledge for decades that the better the mix the lighter the mastering process. I have made recordings which didnt even need mastering that effected the sound but only to bring the volume up because the mix was perfect (at least for the artists tastes.) I disagree with what you said about basses. Basses need to be tweaked and maintained through out your track to keep sounding perfect. Personally I cant stand nexus, a friend of mine use to use it and I almost...

  • @iluvtrance69 Im not sure you know what you are talking about, do you produce? I do! Are you in contact with high level psy producers? I am! Abletons analogue and I think even operator both have moog like ladder filters. not that it really matters. I know you can use vsts in ableton I have been making video tutorials for ableton since version 4. If you cant produce great psy trance with vsts then you cant produce it to be honest. Mixing mastering combination? Thats called mixing you realise? ...

  • fuck yeah probs to israel they produce goa as good as no one

everytime an israeli dj is in my city i went to the party!

  • @iluvtrance69

well i think israel make the best Psy Trance quality :D

  • @iluvtrance69 If you produced then you would know judging a bass this stage of production and after only 20mins of tweaking for a tutorial video is hardly fair. I doubt even the producers you listed would get a nice new bass sound that quickly

  • @iluvtrance69 my track? I havnt uploaded any songs to here, what track do you mean? I would say that compression/eq and having an operator or sample creating the sound were kind of a necessity for any bass sound. But yeah there are many different ways to make sounds. I dont think cosmosis used much vb-1 as he isnt a cubase user....to my knowledge ill have to check with him as he frequents the same forums i do he has a heap of gear so it wouldnt surprise me if he used hardware mostly though.

  • @iluvtrance69 thanks, no I dont know trancemission but yes I do know ectima. I dont think thats fair as its become cliche from the fact that for a time it was the number one sound used in isreal full on rolling basslines.

Nothing to do with noobs as astrix, infected etc have used it and even though they are very cheesy their production is still spot on.

There is no such thing as a noob way of doing something. There is a way that sounds good and a way that doesnt and wven thats subjective.

  • @iluvtrance69 Whats that? VB-1 and quadrafuzz.....please!

  • Hey Tom, absolutely loved your tutorial bro. I'm just starting production and your tutorial was concise, and alot of fun to watch :) Cheers!!

  • @iluvtrance69

    D: Are You From IsraeL?

  • @iluvtrance69

its fucking cool, and creative too, and its musical and has character.

    lets see you do better.

  • wow, I really love your tutorials. I just stepped into ableton from practically nothing, and I am surprised of what's possible with ableton (=everything). You really show me some nice stuff in that programm.

At first I was pretty frustrated and was like "oh my god, I'll never get into all this stuff, I mean, whoa, such a lot of stuff to do!", but then at the end of bassline tutorial 1 I thought, well, such a bassline isn't that hard to do actually, at least if you're Tom Cosm.

    Thank you, Tom!

  • great post, nice and easy to follow.

are you making any plans to visit uk?

  • thanks !

  • спасибо очень хорошо !!!!Thanks from Ukraine !

  • I usually dont comment on other youtube channels, but you just showed me why i was lucky to have stumbled into this video. People might argue that this is not the correct way to go about creating a baseline but the fact that you gave so much information to us in such a short time (28 minutes is way shorter than many other dumb video tutorials combined), compelled me to comment on this video right here. Please keep doing this amazing job and keep posting videos. Luv from India...U made my day!

I'm just about to undertake a 4 week course in Live and you set a bar for me to help me realise where I need to be. I know that this was far from what your capable of, which is awesome for you. Keep on rockin Tom. Thanks heaps.

  • Thanks Tom, your tutorials are excellent

  • @ADI6092 I agree

  • @cosmcosm wtf is he saying??? :D

  • @cosmcosm I'm glad you agree Tom. I can't even understand what the hell this guy is trying to f-ing say.

  • @ADI6092 im from israel and bullshit! you dont have to learn in israel just to become a good tracker. its all about to hear the sound and dont make mistakes in the track GL!

  • @ADI6092 be it what it be -its a fantastic tutorail with loads of info , dont make an ass of your slef.

    thanx cosmcosm,,

  • @ADI6092

dr juvenile ars,go write your enlightening posts about bney yehuda, and please,do not put my country at shame.

You are talking to a person who is an artist in a full meaning of the word, and also a great teacher, while you still haven't learned writing proper English.

But I do agree with you,Tom Cosm should come here to teach people, and in order to preserve the balance of energy, maybe you should get out.

  • @ADI6092

    +1

Israel has the best Psy Fullon Creators

  • @ADI6092

too funky for your ass to handle.

  • @ADI6092

too funky for your ass to handle.

too bad it doesnt conform to your mental straighjacket...

  • @ADI6092 Most awesome comment ever.

  • @ADI6092 what a fucker & badly comment, dude the best trance doesnt come from a special country or place.. thats why in this beautiful community are lot of kinds of music and styles, israel have nice exponents about but nowdays all sound at the same.. there are not even a feeling or something what make us feel the energy with the artist made the music.. i think before you judge someone, you should look your self and remember the base of this community called P.L.U.R.!!

  • @ADI6092 in russia, israel comes to you

  • Comment removed

  • @ADI6092 and you sir may go to school and learn to speak english. not relly good this english u are

    Thanks man!

  • Wow! You really helped me understand a lot of what I've been fuzzy on, thank you very much!

  • I really appreciate your Tutorials because they are so technical, I am learning something about audio engineering aswell as the possibilities of Ableton. Really Helpful thank you so much.

    thx

  • Hey very nice!!

Im not a fanboy of psytrance, but i can use a lot of your stuff for other projects!!

    Good work!!

  • Damn, that's some great work. Thanks Tom!

  • wow nearly 2000 views in 4 days. getting popular tom.

    fucking sweet tune btw

  • Tom -

You're the man. Thanks so much for your tutorials. Have been in a bit of a creative rut...this gave me some food for thought!

  • Unbelievable...

I always thought that real nice sounding psy basslines just couldn't be accomplished with Ableton's native VSTi's and here you are proving the complete opposite.

Thanks very much and groove on!

  • <3

    thank you

  • Thnx for this !

  • You are great!

  • Great stuff Tom
