I played Crossfire in beta. It was fun, i liked the ghost mode. But, it was pretty obvious it was a Chinese rip off of Counter Strike, same weapons, same feel same everything. Not to mention the hit boxes are fuuuuuucked up in CF. And, its riddled with hax0rz.

I lean toward the sniping side of the FPS genre and this games sniping rifles and avatar movement make it near impossible to get a one-shot kill.

In addition to that, you can be off by upto 10(No body parts within range) pixels on any avatar and still hit them.

The final blow to this game for me is that the only people that really end up doing any good are the ones willing to buy "ZP", in-game currency, and the likelihood of ever getting decent weapons without them is impractical.

There is also one other major problem for me and that is I do not like spyware and that is what "Xtrap" is. Though it is nice of them to try and stop the bots...programs like that have a very high tendency to give false positives.

this game took me forever to install, since it kept crashing.

it crashed 7 times during patching, forcing me to repatch everytime.

then i jumped in (admittedly without touching a tutorial) only to find that i couldnt tell the difference between friend and foe. i left the game due to frustration, and when i came back it crashed again.

my computer is leaps and bounds stronger than the system requirements.

im rather upset with how this whole mess turned out.

Oh yeah, Don, check out Savage: The Battle for Newerth. It is a really good freeware FPS/RTS.

One person is the commander and plays the game sort of like Starcraft. The rest of the people are soldiers on the battlefield.

crossfire is absolutely terrible. its like counterstrike 1.6, but you have to grind for weapons, and the graphics are worse. I also don't know how they managed to make aiming with a mouse hard. Well, not really hard. But if feels like the x and y axis have different sensitivities, and it sticks randomly. Max resolution is 1024x768? what is this 1999?

i just tried crossfire and man does it suck really bad. for starters, you can't bind to TAB. i've had walking backward bound to tab since the quake days and cannot play any fps if i can't bind to tab. secondly, no 1920x1080. that's really bad. we in the mid-90's here or what? what a shitty game made for noobs who can't afford to upgrade past agp 1x.. hell, probably regular pci

Best free online FPS imo is quake live. Its light weight, runs from your browser, and is awesome. Rocket jumping is too much fun. If your not a veteran of FPSs i recommend you stay away though, as this game runs at a blistering pace.

Have you heard of Combat arms don? Its also free and its very exciting once you get into it.

It has a few dumb design flaws like renting weapons instead of buying them. But gameplay wise, its excellent!

I used to play it, loved the Egypt map, but got called a hacker after continously being MVP and top 3 player...it's a small map, I had an automatic shotgun, that's not cheating, just using the right equipment. Aaaaanyways, I'd probably play it again but I'm not sure if my internet connection is fit for that.

For my online fps needs I play css and dod:source. They've been around awhile so they've really ironed out the ping, hit-boxes and everything. Plus there is tons of user made content like mods and maps (made some myself) for css (counter-strike:source). Servers are everywhere and you can make your own.

Not free but cheap. I bought mine for 20€ years ago, but I guess one can get it for 10€ now.

Be warned tho, many of the players are really good :D
