I only recently became aware of Teresa and I think she is fantastic. I am american and don't understand the songs in chinese but her performances transcend language and make you feel the song. Like Elvis, she was a briliant talent that left us way too early. Thank you for the treasures you left behind Teresa! Heaven must host some phenominal converts.
@VGrayson1 Welcome to all of us who LOVES Teresa Teng so much. There has never been another Asian Diva since her unfortunate departure. Although I am a Chinese American immigrated here 40 years ago, I missed her performance in the US. HKShips4TeresaTeng and Masami43 have contributed so much in their collection of her legacy. You can find them on YouTube. They translate the Chinese and Japanese songs into English. TT has so many fans from all over the world. Best regards and ENJOY!
@VGrayson1 Thank you John Kian. Since I discovered Teresa 4 days ago, I have spent hours watching her performances in English and Chinese. She was gorgeous and had a mezmorizing voice. It's a shame she is gone. I am 48 and grew up loving Elvis but never had a chance to see him live, unfortunately, I will not have the honor of seeing TT live either. Good bless and hopefully we'll see them in heaven one day.
@fuzzypaws17 Teresa Teng. was so talented that there has never been another Diva since her unfortunate early death. We should all celebrate her achievements by listening and watching the vast legacy of her music generously uploaded by many of her devotees, e.g. HKships4TeresaTeng (also HKShips4TeresaTeng) and Masami43. Some old Indian fellow said "the outcome remains the same no matter what" in the film "Passage to India" many years ago. Hope that might sooth your feeling. All the best!
鄧麗君 in her 1982年10月香港無線電視《鄧麗君特輯》sang it without the “spoken bridge”. I listened them sing the same song side-by-side. Both Teresa and Charlene had great voice although Teresa’s 1982 voice was much sweeter and silkier. Also I can not help to notice the presence of her breathing in between verses when Charlene sang it while Teresa’s rendition was so smooth. Perhaps I’m biased but it was after all 鄧麗君 who re-introduced me to this song last night after all these years.
@cchpest Thank you so much for your comments. While there are some people who have criticized any foreign singers such as our Teresa Teng not speaking English like a native speaker, her rendition as you have described so succinctly is typically smooth and sweat. I love the word you used "silkier". This is so true. There has never been another singer since the early department of Teresa Teng. We all miss her so much. John
I remembered this song 「I've Never Been To Me」from way past but did not know that it was also performed by 鄧麗君 in 1982. Last night I heard Teresa’s rendition for the first time and liked it, which re-kindled my interest into searching for some background information about this 1977/1982 single by Charlene Oliver. According to Wikipedia, its first release in 1977 was a version different from the re-release in 1982, but both included the “spoken bridge”.
@cchpest There is another Charlene. I believe that Charlene Marilynn DAngelo was the one which made this song somewhat popular. I have also purchased a version online by Tracy Huang, a Taiwanese singer who first did night club performance in Singapore. Being a Teresa Teng fan, I like her's the best.
@123kcsee, thanks for your comments. TT had accomplished her well deserved icon in all Asian singers and we ALL love her. As HKShipForTeresaTeng, who devoted substantial time in spreading the Legend will probably agree. Many of TT's songs, especially after the fallout with JC, who MAY have taken advantage of her to promote his own self interest, were quite haunting with a hint of melancholy, if you will. There has been no Asian entertainer who has ever reached the level of TT ever since!
i heard that malaysian tycoon's grandma (richest malasyian chinese you know who now..) oppose a singer as a ganddaughter-in-law...what a crappy guy...just elope lah such an anget TT......this may have ruined her........
We love your sweet voice, we love your big eyes, we love your beautiful smile and angel face....I am just waiting to see you up there in Heaven.....Bless you TT!
Unfortunately I have not kept up with her life at all. Of course, I realized how much I have missed. HKShipsForTeresaTeng who has two channels at YouTube is most dedicated person on spreading the legacy of TT. He is so dedicated to TT and her fans and has worked tirelessly for years to compile numerous videos in honor of TT. He has the heart of gold and no hidden agenda whatsoever.
Did anyone knew of her 7 years gap without any romance after her initial engagment with the rich malaysian businessman were call off? I read in the book, after 1983 to 1990, probably this time she met Paul, she was without any romance. Friends of TT say she change from a glowing girl w/ love to a person who gave up on love. I bet that marriage engagment which were eventually cancel were the one that break her heart the most. She never seem to recover from it, even w/ Paul beside her till death.
i admire her decision in many aspects of her life, when young she choose singing over studies, she choose to go Japan to further her singing career, everything has been a success, all except that her choice in Paul. I don't understand what is so charming about that guy. I read that his expensive equipment are being paid by Teresa....probably why when she pass away, she doesn't have much capital, other than assets (e.g.house) on her. He doesn't deserve Teresa, he seem to be a gold digger.
@kkll02 TT is extremely driven and motivated. When a person is in love, she or he becomes blind sided. There is lots of truth in the cliche "love is blind". If he took away most of her material assets, then he was a gold digger, indeed. I noticed that someone in YouTube also made some reference to JC who also disappointed TT. I guess she had bad luck when it comes to love. I assume that Paul was her French BF.
@johnkiang i only wish that she had her success half transferred over to her romance side, she would be more happier i believe. She seem so sad in her later life. So lonely and seem to be drifting alone even though she had Paul. He just never understood what a normal traditional chinese woman like TT wants. As for JC, he has been an asshole to begin with. I rather not talk about that person, he involved with too many women that he open a press conference n talk about it!
@kkll02 She seemed sad at the hotel in Thailand where she stayed the last day of her life. I really don't think Paul every really cared to learn anything about how to keep a traditional Chinese woman's heart happy... And how to keep her body healthy.
@kkll02 Agree w/ you on most points. Think our dearest TT was quite lonely when she met Paul, and we all make mistakes when we are lonely and vulnerable... In this sense, I also agree w/ johnklang re her blind-spots as well as bad fortune in luck. Such a lovely person, beautiful too of course! :-)
Thx for this excellent video, the best for this song that I've seen on YouTube!!
OK OK I have listened to I dont know how many people sing this song . I tried to find somebody that could sing like this gal and folks I got to be honnest I can't find it So now what do I do ? I mean aint TT dead ? or can she die when she lives in so many hearts ? wow the ole gal didnt miss a beat folks . Or am I bias you think ?
@bobcatcreek , hey my wife's can easily this song but not same voice with TT, everybody has their own style of singing right? but this lady sings with her heart wil surely miss her, enjoy life!!
To @fuzzypaws17. While we all do, I urge you not to dwell on our beloved Teresa or for that matter, whatever which may not be so happy in the past. Life is still wonderful. Think about enjoying life, and the long years of struggle when we were young, is finally over. Cheers, my friend. All the best, John
@johnkiang Thank you John. I am a person not to dwell on the past and I always look to a sunny future. However, sometimes a smell, a sight or an old song brings the past flooding into the present and thoughts run wild. I just got back from a trip to Taipei and I heard a song of TT playing in a restaurant. Those old days came flooding back. But, you are very right...on with the future.
@fuzzypaws17, I just spent most of this afternoon listening to the wonderful music and video by the ONE and ONLY Teresa Teng (Deng). She is truly talented in many ways. I can understand why you and many others miss her SO MUCH. I do too. I left Hong Kong when I was about 18. Perhaps, I am fortunate in a way, that I did not discover her until I am well into retirement. Warmest regards, John
@fuzzypaws17 well fuzzy and John what makes no sence to me as in whatsoever is why she didnt make it in the States . Any song she does as for as I'm concerned becomes her song . WOW nothing I have heard even compares to her and how she didnt make it in the States is beyond me . Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this well deserving Angel of a Lady . God Bless
@bobcatcreek Very few foreign singers became very famous in the US. Celine Dion is perhaps an exception.. Celine, a French Canadian perhaps appears to be less foreign to the Americans. TT is no doubt one of the most accomplished and multi language singers AND performers in our time. Yet life is never fair, I suppose, she did not receive the recognition which she deserve in the States. Another example will be my favorite composer, Francis Lai (Cantonese father and French mother).
Thanks for the info, George. It was an unfortunate event, indeed, that she had to deal with her asthmatic attack pretty much alone except for the local hospital staff. We all miss her.
Thanks for the info. You are absolutely correct that asthma CAN be life threatening especially in a place like Thailand. I forgot to give my asthmatic wife methyl prednisone (instead of using Albuterol neubulizer where the patient may NOT respond to) when we were on a cruise ship.. The ship doctor NEARLY killed her by keeping her awake for 12 hours (from a malfunctioning instrument which beeps every 30 seconds). We should forgive this French man, IF he has no medical training or knowledge.
I am unaware that she had a French Boyfriend. Perhaps you should ask HKShip (George) who has extensive collection of Teresa's songs, career and life. For sure, we all miss her and the world has lost a great songstress, who is so talented and sang in so many different languages and dialects.
Thanks. You may also see her singing a nice duet of Endless Love with a Chinese man. The Endless Love comes from the same VCD as I've never been to me. She looks so good, doesn't she? We all miss her!
Yes, she is the spuerstar singtress from Taiwan and fashionable in Taiwan, Japan, China and most countries in Southeast Aisa. Her euphony is the same with that of Charlene. However, unfortunately, she passed away before 14 years. I am extremely like her euphony and I think miss her all my life.
