  • oh shenandoah i love this song. our choir is singing this song for festival

  • Very nice, I love so much this song and your way to sing it ! Thank You :)

I Wish You a Happy Holiday Season...

    Tess

  • Thank you for sharing this with us. Beautiful.. you have a wonderful voice.

  • This is the most beautiful rendition of Shenandoah I have EVER heard. You, sir, are truly blessed. Thank you for sharing this with us all. :-) *runs off to iTunes to buy it*

  • brilliant performance. natural, credible, believable. it could've been from a trapper, a boatman, sailor, or pioneer walking beside a covered wagon on his way to California back in the day.

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa9219 That is my natural, god given voice and way of singing Come to my concerts you'll hear it. . If you don't like it that's cool. But to make assumptions that I'm affecting anything is inaccurate. Let's leave the assumption making to the imbeciles which I assume you aren't. Right?

  • @LoneGranger affectation... is the name... of the game. That's probably how our latest version got here, by the affectation lent to it by the clipper sailors. The original version of both Oh Shenandoah and Greensleeves most probably'd be imperceptible to the contemporary ear. then we also perceive the dissafectation of written music and the disingenuous perfectionist.

  • @LoneGranger Nicely said my friend.

  • @LoneGranger :( theres no backup singers!!!! im singing this in my concert 2 weeks from now and im kinda disappointed

  • @LoneGranger

Most beautiful! I was given, at my advanced age of (mumble) years, an iTunes card and I picked a wild melange of disco, hard rock, opera, and of course Show Toonz. But your version of this lovely song I've always loved was my first pick. Love it!

  • It's called "melisma" and is a valid musical interpretation. Singing just one note per syllable is called "strophic" and is also valid. The singer added melisma as a form of embellishment. The affectation is a countyr-western interpretation. It's not my cup of tea either, but I respect the artist's unique interpretation.

Bottom line for me is that it IS musical, and does not make me cringe. My own interpretation would be quite different, and that is what makes the world go around!!!.

  • This touches one's soul. Thanks

  • I am going to sing this song at my schools IMEA I adore this song

  • Really lovely rendition. You capture the spirit of this song.

  • Love this, it really is absolutely amazing, I can hear the power in your voice, it's really great, keep up the good work

  • Don't know origin of this beautiful song. Always thought Confederate soldiers sang it.

  • Fascinating pictures and a beautiful voice this made my day

  • WOW. That is all I can say.

  • You talent is a gift from God. That was an absolutely beautiful interpretation of an amazing song! Great job!

  • Wow....you sound marvelous <3

    Marry me? :)

  • Absolutely fantastic, thank you so much for sharing this.

  • AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!

  • How lovely. And the A Cappella a simple golden thread to another time that calls to my heart of knowing, remembering. With deep respect, thank you.

  • hey, i listened to this and my school is performing this in a a bit and i wanted to know where i could find a down-loadable version. If you could help that would be great.

    thanks,

    Totamics

  • @totamics it is available on iTunes just put in Randy Granger Oh Shenandoah. Good luck with your performance. RG

  • I grew up hunting along the Missouri river in north central Montana. I spent many wonderful times there with my father and older brother. They were some amazing adventures for a young boy. They are both gone, and sadly I have moved away from my beautiful Montana homeland. This song gives me such peace because I know I will be back there again someday, and I will cross the Missouri again when they take me home to lay me to rest.

  • @1redsoxfan1963 So touching and I am blessed by your heart.

  • @1redsoxfan1963 Be it ever so humble, there is no place home! This song, sung with such awesome feeling and love, makes me feel the longing and peace you had at that time of youth! We are all travelers along this journey of life across an ephemeral vision of beauty called earth! God Bless you for sharing such an expression of true spirituality! Nothing can make me forget my troubles like the majesty and visions of beauty so graciously offered by our lands and waters.

  • @Maritimer2009 Thanks so much for the kind words. This song is truly touching

  • do you like cheese though

  • Of all the offerings of this beautiful song, this rendition is the most true and expresses it best overall. With a voice like that and skills.... the person singing should seriously be singing a lot more for us to enjoy.

  • So is this song really about the indian removal? Because Noone's actually been able to say what its about.

  • @loringth3great Well, as with everything there are many versions of a story. The lyrics tell of a tale of a white man stealing away a native woman...etc. However, the melody is rumored to be a sea shanty and people argue about that. Regardless, I like the sense of longing in the melody and lyrics. Research the song and come to your own conclusion, or not. History is a misnomer.

  • Hi guy has a beautiful voice but I'm still waiting for the real words.

Why doesn't anyone sing the original words?

  • @pipelineron which original words? You'd be hard-pressed to find them after almost two hundred years...not many folk-like songs have the original words after so long...

  • so beautiful.

  • I heard this son in a church in Paris. Very moving

  • Wow. This was truly an absolutely beautiful a cappella interpretation. You have an amazing voice. :)

  • Wow! Great rendition of this old US folk song! Fantastic job!

  • A beautiful rendition. I was looking for a baritone singing this to help me learn it.(Thomas Hampsons' was too operatic for me.) Yours' was perfect.

  • @assbiteutube Thank you. I find this song sounds best with a more simple approach. Not that singing it is simple at all. Good luck with your version. RG

  • This is My Bedtime Song<3

  • @aUdReYfAiThWeDdInG me 2 lol thats why i looked it up :D

  • Nice.

  • what song part r u singing this in?! I love it!! beautiful voice.

  • @lilmari14u The melody.

  • @LoneGranger I meant tenor, baritone, or bass lol! I love you're voice.

  • @LoneGranger I meant if you sang Tenor, Baritone, or Base lol?

  • I Love this song and the way you sing it!

  • The overtones are gorgeous. It's like an iridescence riding on the top of your voice and above it. It also has an exceptionally warm quality. I found myself longing to hear Shenandoah and found many truly awful versions, but this was a revelation. There's a purity there that almost shocks me. More, please!

  • @ferociousgumby An excellent assessment ! ! ! !

  • You support your voice really well and do a great job with this song!! Thank you.

  • @IrishSinger18 Thank you for that. --Randy

  • You have a beautiful voice.

  • I love this song. Thanks for sharing your wonderful interpretation.

  • @MartinRaetzJr this is a good song i like it. and its very short

  • what a wonderful voice...thanks for sharing your talent! Bravo

  • Great voice! great acoustics! It totally enhances your voice. I'm totally impressed.

  • A beautiful voice and an amazing rendition of this song, which seems to have been in our heads for centuries. It's sung so frequently by Irish groups that I had come to believe that it was another one of those longing-for-home songs so typical of those of my culture. Thank you so much for this version. I'll be sending it on to members of my family who have somehow gotten it into their heads that it's of Celtic origin....

  • @cqsallie Thank you. I've been taken to task both Celtic and Appalachian folks telling me how wrong I am. It's all good though. I'm not a musicologist but I do my research well. (not Wikipedia in other words). The song, longing, melody and melancholy is universal I think in its appeal though. Looks forward to the day when we can find what we have in common instead of different eh? I've sang this song to thousands of people and it always moves them regardless of culture. Thank you for your post

  • This is beautiful!!

  • Wonderful "thank you"

  • Thank you so much for sharing this... your voice and passion penetrate right to the center of the heart. I've always had a special place for this song... it was one of the pieces I auditioned with (on clarinet) to enter college back in 2002. It's absolutely timeless.

  • I have been googling this song forever without ever finding anything! I remember i would use to sing it in grade school music class. brings back old memories! Thank you for this.

  • if you like this then look up 'Shenandoah Graduate Choir of New Zealand' and enjoy!!

  • Beautiful! My favorite version of this wonderful song!

  • Wow! This singer does not need any instrument .. his voice fullfills our heart!

  • What a great song!

    Amazing video!

  • Great job..what a wonderful voice!! :)

  • Very nice, very nice indeed. :-) Songs like this pleases more than one's audibility senses, it pleases the eternal soul.

  • truely america

  • i loved singing this song. its soo pritty

  • Beautiful.

  • The song has nothing to do with the river. Its a lament for love of the daugher of the Great Chief Shenandoah.

  • @consanna Thank you. I am aware of that. And the original lyrics spoke to that. That is why I included so many stills of Native peoples from the area. I am also native american. Thank you for your comments.

  • @consanna

That is a subject of great debate. It is also hard to definitively answer because there is no single author, no single accepted lyrics, most lyrics are not completely coherent, and it began as a shanty for boatmen on the Mississippi and some of our other major rivers, which gave different people the ability to mean different things.

  • I've listened to about ten versions of this song recently (there are lots of versions with different words) but this one brought tears to my eyes. It is one of the most beautiful melodies ever and you sang it with real feeling. It's going on my favourites. Thanks.

  • agreed. awesome dude!

  • you have an absolutely beautiful voice. thank you for posting this video. you have just made my day. i have goosebumps.

  • @akowns Thank you. RG

  • @LoneGranger fine voice freind i also am native american lakota sioux

  • i love this video that i sang it during my 5th grade graduation 2 years ago

  • that is brilliant!!! keep it up..=)

    Randy

  • Wonderful, I love your a cappella rendition; Jo Stafford's rendition used to be my favorite.

  • beautiful

  • Your singing moved me tremendously. A wonderful version of this great song, which my late mother would often sing to me when I was a child. I wish she could hear you sing this -- I know she'd love it.

  • I am speechless.

  • Your very rich vocals honor this very beautiful song! During my 13 years of service in the Marine Corps, I heard this song played by military bands countless times and I came to appreciate how moving and pleasant it is! Very well done!

  • your version sounds even better than Tennessee Ernie's! amazing amazing sound, keep it up!

  • Wow, that was absolutely beautiful!! your voice full of beauty & power. I love the way you interpret this precious song, your expression is lovely, sincere and unpretencious. Thankyou so much for sharing your special gift.

    hs from Hong Kong.

  • hi LoneGranger -- the song is flawless, thank you for sharing -- i would love to show the images to my adult singing class as we learn this song -- how can i get the images from you? -- thanks, yellowsquaw

  • Thank you. Feel free to use the video images. I don't even know if I still have the pics I used.

    rg

  • This is a wonderful, classic song. It's timeless, and Randy does a truly outstanding job with it and his own interpretation. I was lucky enough to first find this version about 14 months ago, and I listened to it about 20 times in a row it was so moving. Since then, I have listened a bunch more and never tire of hearing Randy's version. Thanks Randy! Keep up the good work...from a fan in Chattanooga, TN.

    Deane

  • It was great besides a few sketchy parts where you seemed to improv rolls/slides. I think it would have sounded better had you sung it with a softer, more pure tone and with no improv.

Of course these are just my opinions.

  • maybe you could post your version of how you think it should be done and post it for us to analyze as well.

    thanks

  • Ironically enough, I had deleted my version previous to watching this so that I could include techniques that my voice wasn't comfortable with when recording the first version. I have the flu at the moment, but I'll record it again as soon as I'm better to try and show you what I mean.

  • i loved singing this in chorus so beautiful

  • i am too IM LOVE THIS SONG and were singing the rose!

  • wow this is absolutely beautiful! flawless! OMG, I can't stop listening to this! I am mesmorized. Who is singing this song? I have to find the artist to this song. Up in to now, I have only like Paul Robeson's version but this is breathless, effortless. simply hedonistic!

  • well, thank you cillian2411. If you are sincere, that is me singing that song from my cd Cloudwalker by Randy Granger.

    so glad you like it.

  • really? this song is on the CD? Is the CD available on Amazon?

  • I was just listening to Sissell's version. looking thru the comments your version was recommended. woo hoo blew me away. can this cd be purchased?

  • i pray to God that this becomes our new state song (i'm in Virginia)

as of right now it is strongly considered and has a HUGE amount of popular appeal here

  • beautiful

my dad used to play and sing this when I was a kid

  • The most beautiful rendition of this song, was on the Lawrence Welk show, by Eldridge Sisters and the Atwood twins. It was the bing crosby show. It was awesome.

  • coorection - The Aldridge Sisters and the Otwell Twins

  • Not bad. But I was expecting a choir or multiple voices when I read A Capella

  • Harry Belafonte's version is the best!!! It's so haunting and rich!!

  • disagree! listen to Harry and although nice, nothing can compare to this version! this is just so beautiful it leaves you speechless!

  • Amazing! beautiful video.

i've always loved this song. many thanks.

    thank you.

  • This is one of the best versions I've heard. We sang this in high school A Capella and being part Native myself it pulls on me a lot

  • A beautiful, heartfelt rendition of a song that never fails to get me emotional; it's the greatest American folksong, IMHO. I'll have to check some of your other music out!

  • Excellent video and song

  • greetings from liverpool uk this is beautifull

  • Absolutely beautiful, Randy. I appreciate your skill and enjoy listening to it. Cheers, from Australia, Katrina

  • I have taken the time to listen to all versions of Shenandoah. I can't pick between this one, Bryn Terfel's and Paul Robeson's. Each offers a different but masterly interpretation. If I could only take one, perhaps this one.

maintaining pitch over a longish song is murderously hard and this guy does it magnificently. WELL DONE

  • guauuuuuuuuuuu¡''¡¡'¡'¡'¡'kisssssssssss

  • I dont post many comments here, But I have to say that is one of the best versions of a favorite song of mine that I have ever heard! Keep it up my friend!

  • Yup, HCRHS used this arrangement, although a student in Keyboarding II and Honors Harmony and Creative Writing wrote the other four parts to go in unison with it. Did you know that you could do up to eight part harmony and a descant in a song? I want to know if there is anything out there with more than 5-part harmony. Sop 1&2, Alto 1&2, Tenor 1&2, and Bass1&2. If anyone knows a piece in six part harmony or more, do send me the title. I love songs like that.

  • i loove this song i sang it in cjoir it was my favorite

  • Amazing. So many singers ruin this song by using vibrato. It was meant to be sung with these clear crisp notes. Bravo to the singer for recognizing this.

  • I agree. Vibrato is just a way to show off. And also a way to mask the fact that you can't hold a note.

  • IM SO SINGING THIS FOR CHOIR!

  • me too..haha ``

    it's a good song~

  • it's not a religious song tho?

  • were playing this in band

  • If you're truly the one who did this... BRAVO.

You're the best. My father always listens to folk music and has heard SOOOOOOOO many dumb pop versions and soulless performances of this song. I have heard some too.

But this is GREAT! It's awesome, and whoever complains about the breathing is an idiot. It only makes it better.

  • awesome, gorgeous, bravo!!! keep on going

  • I love this song. Your voice is so great....I like to sing with it :)

  • This is absolutely beautiful. Everyone rags on you for hearing the breathing. But I feel that it only enhances the passion. Also, the ability to sing this so wonderfully a cappella is amazing. Great Job.

  • Very good version !

Ill have to look and see what other songs youve done you have caught my interest :-)

  • You sing so Wonderful!♪♪♪☆

  • A Capella is the proof a good folk song has to pass - where one senses a symbiosis between the performer and the original creator. To me at least, a prayer is a special moment owned only by G-d and a person at prayer. As for the breathing - even Tennessee Ernie Ford's Shenandoah has his breathing. Back in the '50s they must have foolishly reckoned that breathing is part of the deal. The film "The Good Shepherd" has my favorite Shenandoah.

  • great job, absolutely beautiful. but you should edit out the breathing noise between phrases.

  • thank you. I'll try not to breathe next time. RG

  • ROTF,LMHO! Great reply, RG! Zach should stick to studio stuff, if they want the 'human' in the human voice 'edited out' :~}

  • Beautiful ! You have an amazing voice and a talent for bringing the soul of this song alive. It is a blessing to all of us. Thank you for sharing your gift of music and song.

  • Is 1:43 Choctaw?

  • Wow, this song is beautiful and th singer´s got a great voice, just WOW.....

  • You did a wonderful job here. It feels like this song is part of my soul - my father comes from the Shenandoah Valley. His mother used to sing it to him and I catch myself singing it a lot too :)

  • Thank you. that means a lot to me. Something about this song has always touched me deeply. Our shared traditional songs are part of our American songbook. rg

  • A beautiful song, beautifully sung - thank you.

  • Great job. What an awesome voice and it went well with the gorgous images. Thanks very much for sharing

    Peace

  • Fantastic! You voice is absolutely beautiful, what incredible emotion and range you have. This is one of the best renditions I've heard. It makes me so homesick for all it represents..

  • beautiful song!

  • Some of this especially in the beginning is the way I visualize this song. I think of the Shennadoah valley ...I think my great great grandmothers soul must have lived there...she was Cherokee

  • that is a beautiful sentiment. thank you for your comment.

    rg

  • Im singing this in my corse its a really butiful song except me and my friend made fun of it by say ohh miley cyrus i bound to kill you lol well its an ass wome song!

  • OMG that is funny - but I'm not laughing...no I'm not...LOL. Nothing against Miley she rocked the other day on GMA.

good luck in your course. Post a video of your singing.

    rg
