Awww maan, everything about this is completely heart wrenching plus also triumphant and adorable.
Is it true that someone in the crowd yelled "We missed you!" and Jeff replied with "I missed you too, don't think that I haven't." Because that would make it even more adorable.
those assholes who have to 'woo' and 'sing' aloud to the song to show that they're cool for recognising what fucking song he's playing! if you know and like the song, shut the fuck up and listen to it! thanks for this though nonetheless!
@shoey920 When you have something so rare as a Jeff Mangum appearance... you shoosh people. You shoosh the hell out of people and knock them out if they dont stfu. At least it wasn't ruined, as people seemed to stop singing (for the most part) after the initial excitement of having a legend on stage.
@shoey920 you just don't understand... imagine having visual "noise" blocking your way to contemplate a work of art, namely a painting or a sculpture... well, it's just the same as having audible noise when Jeff Mangum is playing, at least, Oh Comely...
when you were at the show singing along, you couldn't hear everyone else singing. you could only hear jeff because he was so loud. you can only hear everyone else here so well because the audio is right next to the recorder. no one there ruined the experience for me. i felt like i shared it so well with everyone there. it was one of the best shows i've ever experienced.
i think i can understand why he stopped... what else can you possibly say after you have tangled with death and snatched the poetry right out of his heart?
I sign along at home. Not listening to Jeff live if I ever had the opportunity. And I would politely punch anyone singing along in the mouth so the rest of us could hear what we came for.
I don't get you people who complain that the audience is singing along on a live show. Firstly, you could hear a pin drop for most of the video, secondly, what's more unenergetic and dull than seeing a dude play an acoustic guitar on stage while the crowd stands completely silent and immobile like they weren't even there?
@asbestosman When he can actually play good music on said lone guitar, I'd rather hear him play and sing than 100 people who don't know how to sing. Even people who can sing! I didn't come to hear them. Movement is not a problem, but singing at a quiet* show is the rudest thing you can do there.
*singing is acceptable at anything with at least 4 people on stage and an equal number of colored lights.
I am shooting myself in the face for missing this...serioulsy, like buckshot to the grill for being so unaware that the magnificence of Jeff Mangum did something he hadn't done in HOW MANY YEARS??!?!?!?!!!
amazing...his voice has gained a deeper touch over the years, yet still has that shrill urgency to it...
cheers for the capture, but next time you are able to witness something like this, and record it, save the singing for the shower, k? =]
This must have been the most intimate and beautiful moment of your life. Watching it on youtube is the highlight of my life. I am tearing up. Nothing will ever give my life the same impact Jeff did. Incredible. I wish I could have 5 minutes to talk him, i honestly would give my life for 5 minutes with Jeff Mangum..Fuck, 2 minutes.
were it not a benefit show, somebody should have let out a fratboy "WHOOOO!" at some point during the middle verse. maybe after the smelling of semen line. i mean mangum is great and all but balloons exist to be burst
Need to get 2 min in before people stop singing along and (I'm guessing) get all openmouth awed and respectful of the excellence. Even this pretty crappy cellphone vid gives me the chills. Ty ci1025, you lucky ass.
@whotookaegir you said it was unexpected to hear his voice sound 12 years older than the album which is completley expectable, what do you want his voice to sound 12 years younger? haha. no disrespcet.
Something that could have so amazing ruined by a bunch of fucking drunken idiots. The guy is a legend and the people there are degrading it by yelling nonsensical shit.
I can see why he disappeared for so long. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to play something this intimate and personal to a crowd of strangers
Awesome....Did you get "ITAOTS" or "Two-Headed Boy"? Also, I really wish he played Holland, 1945, but oh well. (I wasn't there, btw, just happened to read the set somewhere.)
@xraistlininblackx I didn't unfortunately. I only recorded the first 2, because I think i started to piss people off (that's why the pree video ends abruptly). Plus, we weren't supposed to record anything anyway and I didn't want to get thrown out.
I can 100% confirm that before the set someone walked on stage and placed a recorder right in front of jeff's chair, so this was DEFINITELY recorded.
@ci1025 Awesome about the recording part, and thanks for the information. I know it's incredibly unlikely, but did Jeff say anything that would suggest a comeback?
@xraistlininblackx no, but he definitely seemed really happy and appreciative of the deafening applause that followed each song. i truly hope a proper recording surfaces because it was seriously one of the best things i've ever experienced.
@ci1025 That's funny that you say you think you were "pissing people off", cause I HATE it when people record/take pictures at concerts. But I am truley glad you got all of Oh Comely, as it's my favorite NMH song, and to just see if Jeff Magnum still has it, which, by this video, it seems like he hasn't skipped a beat. I do wish they would get back together, or do a reunion tour. :( Anyways, thanks for posting, I was truley shocked when I heard he played some songs live.
Wow- he's been away for awhile, but he has remarkably, not lost it! Sounds great.
