As a batting side, you have to make the most amount possible of runs ( crossings between the wickets ) in an slotted amount of overs ( 6 balls bowled ) [Bowling = Pitching] or you have to chase the total scored by your opponents and better it by 1. As a bowling/fielding side, you have to restrict to a minimum the number of runs your opponent makes or by taking their wickets ( like a strike out or catch etc ) in the same allotted overs .
