after watching this im not sure that the doctors diagnosed me correctly....i didnt think they did from the start....im written u quite a bit tonight so ill stop lol i would enjoy talking to you...i just want to make people think and love and decide for themselves.....i was a chemistry major...b4 schizophrenia/schizo effective/drug induced psychosis off all meds atm and the doctor said that i improved with no dosage increase then i felt bad for lien about taken the meds..he said i was a liar.
There wasn't said that those are brain scans, but slices of the brain. So I understood that maybe that's taken after death- in autopsy. There was too little explanation about those pictures, wasn't said- when and how they were taken. I'm not sure, but I think that in the scans you can't see the neurons. So, if they were taken after death- the individual must bee taken medications for years.
This is the first time A) i've ever seen physical evidence of mental illness and B) i've heard the negative attitudes of society explained so well, thumbs up to you Doc, i love this video!
Regarding the negative associations to mental illness, you may be interested in taking a look at the UK Time to Change campaign, which looks into exactly that.
@nox707 dont think so for any scan you have to be free of drugs and food etc as it reacts with that radioactive chemical they pump you with, plus is usally done to diagnose before treatment however try and get a schizo to take the treatment :P without force its a miracle they have actually dragged one to the scanning table. we can all stop hiding now ..phew!
to all commenters who have experienced discrimination and/or otherwise insensitive treatment from those who don't understand, big hugs to you. don't let them take away your strength and beauty. instead, harness that negative energy and use it to broadcast your story and make your voice heard. greater understanding is key to eradication of stigma.
i always think i can transmit my thoughts telepathically. i wonder what my brain looks like? when i die, i might give my brain to science. i am diagnosed with schizophrenia.
I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and went on disability. I started college right away and despite sometimes not being able to function at times they passed me right along anyway. It took me 6 years to get a two year degree but that piece of paper was worth something. Right now I have been working for 7 years and am off the system. I no longer have to go to the doctor and tell her how miserable I am doing every three months. I can tell her I am doing great or not and there's no consequence.
nice video doc, it's unbelievably amazing the huge crowd of ppl who don't understand the idea of mental illness..nevertheless make fun of people having it..!!
i have a similar situation at home, where my family thinks my state of my mind is just child's play, and losing faith in god...
@soymiguelalejandro23 you shouldn't keep quite abt this, talk 2 higher ranked person than this "professor" and complain officially ..so the likes of him won't have a chance to mock the weaker individual
As a suburban housewife in the US, I would never mention my condition (bp-2) to my peers; not only would I be shunned but probably my children as well; there is a mountain of negative public perception to climb.
I work for a health care organization in California that shuttered its behavioral health unit 5 years ago. In two years the other hospital across town closed its psych unit. Government needs to do a better job with financial reimbursement. Unfortunately, it's financially cheaper for the feds to let the mentally ill go homeless, wander the streets and then present themselves as 51-50s at our nation's emergency departments; they let hospitals pay the cost. So sad. Actually, all of society pays.
I am very curious about the changes that could have happened to my brain from seriously ill 10 years ago to fully recovered now. How does the brain respond to an effective long term treatment?
Until more information on mental illness gets out there people just don't know what to think. I remember a guy complaining about a woman at work, said she was useless, then she was off sick two weeks and was better when she got back. He thought she had been just not bothering and if something was wrong it wouldn't get better by having two weeks off. Without understanding how antidepressants work it did sound dubious...
As a person on SSDI, it's always been my paranoia that I would lose my disability due to them claiming I've recovered enough to work again and considered no longer to be disabled. The classic symptoms you describe may not be so obvious unless thrown back into the same stressful environments again? But I suppose they don't use that in their judgment and would expect me to at least work part time. Currently, jobs are scarce enough for the normal people, much less for disabled etc. Am I wrong?
the way you talk is interesting. where did you go to school for your doctorate? and if you're a practicing doctor how do you have time to be making so many videos?
What are the beginning signs og schizophrenea. My x and his sister have it and bipolar. I have 4 boys. My youngest (10) has early onset bipolar and I believe my other 3 boys (ages 12-16) also have bipolar (on meds for depression). So I am hoping they don't get the schizophrenea too.
I'm schizoaffective disorder bipolar type & currently undergoing discrimination in my college from a professor who because I don't "look" impaired treated me as if I were trying to be lazy and not perform to standard in class. after he saw first hand as he was trying to explain an assignment to me that I was indeed moderately impaired cognitively he has since been abusive towards me flipping me off when I ask questions and pointing out my work errors to the class evoking laughter.
@soymiguelalejandro23 What's interesting about this statement is that it could also be a delusion. But if real, than this teacher is setting the school up for a law suit in some way such as discrimination and harrassment? Unfortunately, you'd likely need witnessses and your alters, if any, won't do. I'd complain to the school board in writing with a registered letter. Some classes are possibly monitored and should be.
Most people think of schizophrenia as extremely severely delusional and paranoid. Are there mild cases of schizophrenia? Can a person with a different mental illness experience schizophrenic-like symptoms occasionally? Or would that be labeled as transiently psychotic?

My psychiatrist is no where near as experienced as TheDoctorOfMind. After watching a these videos I'm pretty convinced I need to change P-docs.

Couldn't it be, that schizoprenic brain changes are the result of long use of anti-psychotics not the illness itself?
