  • Comment removed

  • Hey im a muslim lady living in a military town in the states and i was nervous when i first moved here but, you find good people and bad people every where...just because its a small town with a lot of white people doesnt mean they are going to be racist....White people aren't the only racist people....I have been called names by people of all colors...

  • lol!!!!

  • Ok, people, Arab is not bad at all... we do not judge from your colored skin, or ur differnt beliefs and regions.... Arab is my hometown, we dont have druggys or anything like that.... I'll admit, there is some country talkin hillybillys, or watever u wanna call them in Arab.... we have a really good school system here as well.... Arab is a small town, and i know there's not much to do here either, but go to huntsville. but, it is a beatiful place when u come and find them, Arab is my hometown

  • Did they actually do their research? The towns name was misspelled by the post office. It was supposed to be, Arad, the name of the founders son.

Arab is a small town, so yes it is predominantly white, but there are other ethnicities. My best friend from high school and her family are Persian!!

I just think there are more important things going on on our country and the world. Why try to get attention by visiting Arab??

    Oh, and Roll Tide!!! :)

  • @rocksthesocks...so true. You will find racist people everywhere. I grew up in Arab and can speak for myself and the people I know that we are not racist. I mean, I'm half Lebanese and lived in Arab for 16 years w no problems.

I have also lived in Miami and Vegas and see just as much racism, if not more, here than in Arab!!!

I am proud that I grew up in Arab!!

  • Just be glad you didn't go to Heflin..

  • Arab just has a bad reputation from its attitude from older residents. Things used to be really racist in the 70's against African Americans, but things have changed. We're still mainly White, but our attitudes are no more, and probably less than, racist then the more mixed schools.

  • This is offensive!! I am Lebanese American from Arab!! And who this Jonathan guy and why didn't they do more research before?

Why talk about the "survivalist looking characters"? These people are racist! Why doesn't the professor help the women from his country?!?!?!

  • i'm from arab

  • I'm from this area and I find what they tried to prove insulting. They try to make us look ignorant and close minded. We aren't all just racist hicks.

  • im insulted im preety sure that arab isnt that racist, i got to school there and everyone gets along just fine

  • I'm sorry, but I am personally insulted by this. I'm from Arab, AL. Have been all my life. That Arabian guy made us all look like savages. If you can't deal with the "attitudes" of the "deep south" then why come here? Really? And I think the small town, southern accent, camo guy thing is exactly what Arab is about. Southern hospitality is very important to us down here, but so is a good old fashioned country ass whoopin'.

  • @DippingDarling amen.

  • What about those "survivalists over there", referring to local guys in camouflage. Is wearing hunting clothes a crime? These people should have been somewhere else looking for trouble, there's not any here.

On the other hand, I have known some people in my lifetime that could have given them all the trouble they wanted and a bunch more to go with it. 30-40 years ago, they might have found just what they were looking for.

  • wow man i was born n raised in arab n just cuz were mostly white dont mean a thing i mean i got a bunch of freinds some white some black n some mexican so u cant say we r all racists n stuff

  • Comment removed

  • Oh my gosh. I really hate this video. Sure we're mostly white, but that doesnt mean we're prejudiced agaist other races. They make us out to be such rednecks. UGH. Trust me, people who see this video. You can go to any place and find raciscim. Not just Arab, not just Alambama. .

  • If we were to go into Iraq wearing a Jesus shirt we'd be killed on spot. [Not that I'm religious. Just saying.]

  • People who search for prejudices will fine it. People like this are the one stiring up shit and move on. I disk anyone acking like this. Want to make friends with me I live in ARAB I may ask you to if your a Allien. and I even may ask your attion to the good people of the USA after that if your a Good person Ill be your friend. But Look at it this way. I just dont let any one be my friends. But I am friendly to all! And Arab Alabama is a good home town with a mix of religion and race.

  • I have lived in Arab my entire life, and I love how these prejudice snobs who know nothing about us or why our town is even named Arab in the first place just walk in and make us look as hick-ish as possible. The worst part was when the "Muslim" girl said, "I hope no one gets violent." And sure, we are predominately white, but I can only think of a few people in this town who wouldn't be completely hospitable to someone of a different race OR religion.

  • @CatLuvrHime well said!

  • In many middle eastern countries I've seen not-so-discreet prostitutes, not to mention women who are without a male "companion" and dressed no differently from the streets here, makeup skirts and all. not in saudi arabia but just about anywhere else there. rapes are far less common there. and yes you can drink

you really are an ignoramus if you imagined the entire reason that way. ever heard of dubai you illiterate? Go google some crowd pics of random Arab capitals you slope-skull

  • @arrowhead9000 Go fuck yourself. I did not claim that women are universally prohibited from wearing what they want and traveling alone in every Arab country on Earth. However, the fact remains that women are routinely persecuted and beaten for failing to adhere to a strict Islamic dress code, even in Arab capitals like Tehran. Do you deny this? Or is your argument that oppression does not exist in the Middle East because you saw some Arab whores turning tricks without wearing a full burqa?

  • "even in Arab capitals like Tehran" <------ hahahahahahaa

    'nuff said

  • well they would of gotten there story if they were arround me and my friends

  • whoa whoa whoa i live in arab and we are not racist as this video implies just about every one i know treats the other ethnic groups in our town with respect as far as i can tell.

  • there are some racist in arab...i know alot of theme they just dont show it alot

  • wow, you have GOT to be kidding me!!! this is the most pathetic piece of crap i have ever seen. i consider this very insulting. hmph.

  • Good ol bay ray!

  • I (much to my dismay) live in Arab. The only racist people I've met are the old folks.

    ..Town still totally blows, though.

  • LOL "I hope Violence doesn't break out" Where do people get this stuff. Like they are riding through Harlem after dark.

  • lmfao! Seriously. Nothing ever happens in Arab..except for the occasional meth lab explosion.

  • Hey thats Adam Goss at 5:43 !!

  • I grew up in the Midwest and Wisconsin and I found southerners to be by and large hospitable and respectable. Even rebel flag wavers, they usually stick to their own.

  • just like the song says southern man dont need him around any how

  • Listen to what the man says.......at the end of the video he says that it was a misconception and that all they received was southern hospitality. Don't act like you don't know what he's talking about! The first time I ever visited Arab it was strange! How many towns these days have only white people living there?? Oh excuse me, there are Asian people at the Chinese restaurant and a Middle Eastern guy at the gas station.

  • Hey, that middle eastern guy has a name - Dillip. And he's awesome. xD

  • Sorry, I didn't know his name. He's a very nice guy.......I was just trying to prove a point! :-)

  • theres more than that there are latinos, african americans, and icelandic people

  • wtf im from arab this is bull shit we are nice u muslim ass hole .... we are kind ...dont threaten us with bombs...and talk shit and we wont be particularly unfriendly to you

  • we R nice ! (till threatened) lol

  • i don't really care what you wear or believe.. but if the shit hits the fan and the muslims of alabama start trying to riot or burn down building and all that mess.... they will swing

  • wow i live in arab and i was sitting in the table right behind yall at son's bbq because i remeber yall walking in with all those video cameras haha and i guess you missed sudi he is hindu and he goes to my school and everybody likes him

  • Jesus is Coming Soon!!

When you receive Jesus in your heart you receive eternal Life and become a child of God (John 316).

You will become a New Creature righteous in Christ!! (2Corinthians 51721)

  • this is terrible. my history teacher showed this to us and the truth is, yeah, arab USED to be like, super racist. and if they had talked to some like, really old people that have lived here all their lives, yeah, then that would have fit more into the stereotyping.

but at least the stereotype has been broken

  • that's cool that people came to my home town !

  • not pronounced arab pronounced AY-RAB gd im from here and were not that racist..

  • We love all manner of heathens in Arab. (Just kiddin)

  • City of Mobile is full of Muslims...

  • This is ridiculous... She said she hasn't seen many muslims in Alabama. She needs to check out Huntsville cause I go to school with quite a few and they don't get treated any differently than anyone else. Plus it isn't that hard to go to Google and look up the history of Arab, AL to find out where our name came from instead of making a lame documentary that makes them look like idiots...

  • Good Ol Arab Alabama.

It's just as bad to stereotype Arab Alabama (as so many have) as it is for Arab Alabama to stereotype you. We are in the deep south but we are still part of the great melting pot society. Are people more affraid that we will accept them and their culture or that we will tell them to go home???

Arab Alabama is more affraid of being a big city that it is of any persons or cultures.

  • ha that is so true...at least we can buy alcohol now :)

  • Actually the people doing the documentary are so stupid because he said she is dressed like an "arab" not informing her about Islam.. and yes they are nice.. but also as the woman said Uneducated.. because after 9/11 you have to be so ignorant not to even know a little bit of what is Islam..

  • Im From Arab Al

  • Wow, it absolutely astounds me that people actually came to my hometown for that purpose. I thoroughly enjoyed this stereotype being completely overturned!

  • I love being from Arab, Alabama. :)

  • This video only proves that southerners are not the stereotypes theyre thought to be. I wish we had videos like this of Muslim culture so people could be shown not all Muslims are radicals.

  • Oh, I see. The US is hit with a vile, unthinkable terrorist attack by Muslims in the name of Allah, but its us Americans that need to be studied to ensure that were behaving ourselves in a post-9/11 world. How about a study on what the worlds moderate Muslims are up to in a post-9/11 world? Oh, now I remember. Doing that will get you hauled before a Canadian human rights commission or charged with a criminal offense in the Netherlands.

  • There is nothing as breathtaking or infuriating as the abject ignorance and bigotry of leftist academics. DISGUSTING!!!!!!!

  • In an experiment such as this even a negative result is a result nonetheless. The result here could be showing what an echo chamber universities have become by repeating the same mantra over and over, thereby making a native from the town believe the people he grew up with are a bunch of drooling thugs and racists. Alabama 1, Academia 0

  • Actually if you want a real eye-opening experience try wearing a yarmulke and a Star of David near a group of Muslims. That might get the reaction these folks were so hoping to find.

  • Try wearing a Bush/Cheney shirt in a blue state town anywhere, see the open minded tolerant reaction there.

  • What condescending crap.

Honest to God, did you really think this woman was going to be assaulted? Did you think the KKK was going to show up?

What I think is funny is that they were treated nicely and with respect--far more respect, in fact, than showed by the people actually doing the documentary.

I think we all know who the true bigots were in this film.

  • I'm sure she is safer there in her hijab than I would be in San Francisco in a Sarah Palin tee

  • I like how they zoomed in on the guys wearing cammo. Because we all know hunters are more hateful/racist than the next guy.

  • This video should be called: "Leftist biggots hunt down imaginery racists".

I bet you if that friendly man or that friendly woman was educated on Islam and if either of them would have some Islam critique........ these 'researchers' would have concluded; "Racism!!"

    The leftists are idiots.

  • Southerner's wouldn't bother a muslim, say anything or even look at you weird --- they would just feel sad for anyone confused and stupid enough to follow Islam.

  • .....and you could get that from just about anywhere or anyone, including liberals.

  • See, now that guy is a REAL Southerner; polite, hospitable, and all around friendly.

  • There is view (of many, around the world, and in some 'liberal' parts of the USA) that the southerners are still stuck more than 100 years ago...and racist. Obviously there are racists..as there are EVERYWHERE... But this hate and perception of southerners...and REpublicans/conservatives is false

  • When do we get to see her pose as a Christian missionary wearing a plunging neckline, while driving, in Riyadh. Hmm professor?

  • THIS

  • Want to see real prejudice and genuine hate sweetie? Want to have a REAL concern for violence againt you? Go put on a nun's habit and try to enter Mecca. Or how about wearing that same habit on ANY street corner in Downtown San Francisco, while singing "Amazing Grace"?

  • Offensive experiment, the specifics of which seem to be completely lost on the host and team.

    Unbelievable.

  • Well, I think we found some prejudice, but it wasn't from the citizens of Arab. Hope no one gets violent...stop getting your world view from Hollywood, sweety.

  • You mean to say people don't always fit sit-com stereotypes?

    My worldview just shattered.

  • Do you see any irony in the fact that you are on a trip to debunk stereotypes about Muslims and you assume that you'll be assaulted simply because you're in the south (e.g. "I hope no one get's violent."). Talk about buying into an unfair stereotype!

The one thing this video has shown is that the folks in Arab, AL were a lot less judgmental of Haley's Muslim garb than the people of "Journey Into America" were of the clothes worn by the "survivalist types" (who were most likely just hunters).

  • Now take the crew to Berkley and conduct the same experiment with a Bush/Chaney T-shirt.

  • If they did that, they would not be able to post their film. They would be too busy being dead.

  • Lol, it was kind of rude to assume we would be 'violent' and uninviting. I have lived in Arab since I was born. 'The team is here to protect me', really? Give me a break folks, did you think you were walking into a war zone or something? Get a clue...

  • I agree nothing bothers me more then when a person assumes I'm racist and hate everyone who isn't white because I'm from the south

  • Hi, I grew up in Arab and I'm glad to know that everything was well... It's a friendly town...

  • only if your an adult. Im 14 and the people in the age group from 14-19, i cant even think of how to describe it! Stoners, drunks, people who think they're badasses and try to get in a fight every chance they get. I gettin really tired of having to tackle these little bitty guys and sit on them before they stop tryin to fight me(i weigh alot)

  • And that is called being a teenager, not racism or being from Arab, AL.

  • Greg!

  • wow wouldnt expect that at all..
