@luckymisselala The drivers lifted the wipers before they left their cars so that they wouldn't be frozen to their windshields when they returned to their cars after the blizzard.
Gosh I remember this horrible storm. The movie "Day After Tomorrow" just kept playing in my head as I was seeing this blizzard in effect from inside my home
It's a typical snowfall for most of Russia and nearby countries. Nobody worries when there're such blizzards there. Chicago isn't that southern city, why the snow is such a surprise?
@FastGreenFCF It wasnt that it was a surprise. Its that it happened so quickly and so much at once. It was at least 17 inches of snow at one time. I doubt that's a "typical" snowfall for Russia.
@wright9342 the city had to tow the cars away so they could clear LSD. They put them on side streets- in no parking zones. Then they gave the drivers tickets
@PrayerCoach The posted speed limits are 45 in summer and 35 in the winter. But 'real average speed" is 55 -60 or snail's pace if you are driving threw Grant Park when there is a lot of events in the down town area.
@bbwlover493 There's technically only 3 months left of summer, it's usually chilly again by the end of August....it's the end of May and it's only 48 degrees today! I'm okay with it though, I can't wait for the snow again :D
The Blizzard was the most impressive weather I've ever experienced (and no, I don't remember '79 etc). The lightning, thunder, drifts, how desolate it was Wednesday morning and the way the sun came out in the afternoon - all within the scope of maybe 21 hours - is stuff I'm not gonna forget soon. And if LSD was the biggest breakdown in the transportation system, then I say we came out of this well.
I like how Chicago's Democrat mayor, berated by national Republicans, had a city crew that got the city running again in very short time compared to New York's GOP billionaire mayor.
Okay...I have a question.....why are all the pictures showing the one side completely cleared and the other side isn't? Did they actually get all the cars on that side towed and LSD cleared then showed the other side that wasn't???
@Bill46214 if i understand your question correctly here's the answer. the accident that caused that stoppage happened on NB side. once it happened the SB side was closed and no cars were allowed. it was easy to plow that side in the morning.
@Bill46214 It was only the north bound lanes that were effected ( the ones closest to the lake) At that time of day traffic is mostly out bound ( N/B) and there a concrete wall that separate the the north bound side from the s/b side. The next day the city was dumping the snow on the s/b side there it was hauled alway in dump trucks.
That's what people get for not listening not only to the weather, but the mayor, should of stayed inside!!!
What's even more funny is the people tried to blame the mayor, when he predicted what was going to happen!
I hope people learned there lesson, and next time people should just listen to the elected officials that they pay to tell you these things, and the weather advisor that also had over 100 models of the storm. The last words of wisdom "They told you so!"
Wow! I was stuck in that for about an hour before I decided to pay & leave my poor cabbie, and walk to the nearest hotel. Brutal, brutal winds once I was outside, though. I regretted my decision... until I saw this video.
Critically - If they didn't have the solid guard rail in the median this would not have happened - I know that is easy to say in hind site but I have never seen a state that sticks up islands and guard rails everywhere like Illinois. Its like they think they are on the edge of of a cliff. Or that those who drive or all drunk or blind. Used to say the state had a dirty contract with some company called "Islands Are Us" - Illinois government and Unions
OK - so - where did everyone go? Were they still in these vehicles when this video was shot? If not, how did they get out?
And, how come a lot of these vehicles have one wiper pulled outwards? Is this a sign that a rescue worker has checked to see if anyone's still inside?
