I literally don't own a staff now I'm in college at home on vacation. I'm going to a very nearby bamboo forest and finding a perfect piece to make a staff with. Wrapping a grip around the bottom and all... Otherwise I'm picking up a dowel stick at Home Depot or something they work just fine :) I used to use them all the time when I was your son's age. I will post my staff video ASAP; my apologies for cluttering up your page I deleted the ugly comments.
@jpek919 "White Tiger" was the name of my dojo at the time. It was named after Meibukan Kaicho, Hanshi Meitoku Yagi's kata Byakko (white tiger.) *It was the only one of the Meibuken kata that I learned. My disciplines are: Okinawa Goju-Ryu, Motobu-ha Shito-Ryu, and Nippon Seibukan Jujutsu (Aikibudo.) I could educate you if you had an open mind and good attitude...
@glimmerman108 ok you got some knowledge. I'm a brown belt in Shotokan dont act like i dont have an open mind cause im giving a little criticism. That white tiger story is cool though sorry for disrespecting your dojo; I thought it was just another copycat YMCA type place that gives out certificates for money. I would like to learn Kempo but I just favor Karate and Hapkido. I also learned some good staff wor and moves from a Kung-Fu friend so I mix it up when I fight I am a kick machine.
@RenshiKF Thanks my Brother! Howzit Going. I am recovering from my 2nd acl replacement, hence no new material. But I am getting there. Take care! Osu!
My son and I play "heeya" since he was three years old. Didn't even realize he was learning self-defense. Now at 10 his blocking is incredible and he punches harder than any 10 year old I know
Why would an adult instructor practice on a child of this size, it serves no purpose but getting the child injured. why not just have the kid work on the holds and throws with someone of similar size?
I dunno, cos the old guy knows what he's doing and won't drop the kid on his head the way some other kid might? It's practice for the kid, not the instructor
The "child" is my nephew, and I can appreciate where sincere concern might come from with an unknowing person watching this video. Let me assure you, he is quite safe and has been well trained and prepared for everything he does in his training. The teacher is more loving and caring for his children than would be possible to describe for you: the only person Glimmerman ever seems to hurt in training is himself ;o ) ...
If the student learns how to breakfall and how to roll then there is no worries at all. It is obvious by watching the video that Matt's son does understand how to breakfall and roll. Everyone has to start somewhere and over the years of training you learn things so that when you are in this situation even at a young age you should be able to react and respond. All of us who started as kids had an adult instructor and all of us who practice traditional martial have been thrown countless times.
Sometimes by teaching a child with child-like behavior and not expecting more of the lad will only instill more child like behavior. A kid that has been challenged by training with adults and moreover, his own father, instills an attitude of a 'can-do' nature. Sadly, MA has dissolved down to some folks that can only demonstrate technique and then we have the unique few like Glimmerman that can actually teach. Gambatte!
The younger fellow's bo-ken is much better than the olde guy's. That single-leg fall is good too! All I can say is, you're mighty lucky he didn't get angry when he was so beneficently letting you throw him.
Awesome video, just goes to show you how much smarter kids are than we give them credit for at times. Is that bo kata at the beginning Yamani Ryu bojutsu? It reminds me of Yamani Ryu style kihon. Excellent demonstration by that young man!!
The bo kata is called "Shihonuki" and was one of Master Seikichi Odo's kata. He learned it from Miyasako Hiroshi Shinshii. It actually repeats the same pattern to 4 corners (Shiho) but sometimes space precludes us from doing that with more than one person. (I have heard it was one the oldest bo kata taught, but I will check on that.) Thanks...That's my boy!

Great stuff but please don't swing weapons around the kids head, accidents can happen even with the best of us. Still, great stuff.

a) He has obviously learned his breakfalls
b) He is a brown belt
c) The instructor probably knows more than you do
d) I have been to your page and don't see anything with you in it
e) except for a select few postings (probably to friends) you seem to be more into insulting people on the net than anything else
