  • You know what's more disgusting than blind optimism, like the young hopefuls in the video? Real cynicism. Like the cynics that got voted up to top comments on this video.

There's nothing wrong with hoping for a better future for all people.

  • @DShadow

LOL these Berkeley libtards have been out of college for a year and a half now, I bet they're not bubbling with enthusiasm anymore.

  • Berkley, figures........wake up kids

  • so many hippies

  • lol

  • Good luck with your day dream!

  • "YES, THE FUTURE IS WHAT WE MAKE! CONGRATS UC

  • "WE" have too much? What the fuck is this WE shit? If you think I have too much come try to take it and see what happens.

  • clueless :^/

  • i have a thought. .... that was it

  • Do all of the people in this video actually care about the state of the world? Probably not, but I'm sure that at least some do. What gives anyone else the right to take a shit all over their "idealism"? If more people encouraged the ideas presented here( i.e. unity, equality, and social justice) instead of going to incredible lengths to shoot them down, perhaps things would change.

  • heý_ì_fÊÈl_sÒ_lÔñèlÿ_tõÐãÿ

  • In youth there is optimism. Glad i'm still young.

  • who cares!

  • every person in this video is 3 months from being in it for themselves, College is like some wierd ass land of make belive.

  • one of the biggest lies of the century "were all in this together"

then why is it the greatest advancements in human history were done by individuals who possessed a quality of courage, daring and genius that the pig population with their heard mentality could never accomplish

the only thing group think is for is to control the pigs until the day of slaughter

  • I kind of don't understand why so many people dislike this video?

  • @doozyboody21 These kids just finished their second round of high school and think they are so well equipt to make a change in the world. They are also complete hypocrits, expecting freedom and openness but attended one of the most closed minded universities in the world.

  • @Robbob9933 Oh I see. Okay I was confused, thanks for clearing it up.

  • Lots of shit stains in this video.,

  • read the lyrics to Dethklok - Go Forth and Die - lol 400% true

  • In the end it all does not matter, it all the same way, in death.

  • Congratulation all of you guys.....now go out and find a job....stop bullshitting! So most of you can paid back the student's loan.

  • enjoy your ignorance kids, a year in the real world will give you an outlook just like the rest of us, which will be to hopefull eek out enough of a living to hopefully get some rest one day, ALLLLLLL this bullshit about world peace and what not, hahah, not very realistic

  • @duanescot I give the last girl credit, "the future is what you make it" shows some grasp on reality.

  • @duanescot When do people become so bitter?

  • @duanescot Not with that attitude, way to settle...

  • @bigchief70

Welcome to the real world, bitch.

  • @1:26 is spot on w me

  • 1:30 communism?

  • Wait till LIFE hits them!!!, speak to these fuckwits in 10yrs time, burnt out and disillusioned lool.

  • Hey, cynics...what do YOU want the future to look like? More money for you and less for everyone else?

  • @IEatFoodProductions Nah. More for Wal Mart, less for everyone including them. Blah blah bootstraps and all that.

  • Chacha for president xD

  • i say we use less toilet paper in the future.

  • I really like this guys. Instead of talking about shallow things like getting a job or getting married, they are talking about changing the world. This shows how enlightened they are and credit goes to berkeley for bringing them up in an awesome intellectual enviroment.

  • @daveibukun There was more intelligence in the 1956 Miss America pageant than in this video. $80,000 for a 4 year degree? Hilariously funny.

  • @daveibukun

Since when did communism accomplish anything? Like the

chinese steal technology from the country they hate. Like the Russians that want to kill the country they hate. Like the liberals that shut you down because you don't think like they do. They claim equality as long as it is their type. they claim negotiation and open mindedness as long as it is negotiated their way and open to their ideas - no dialog or discussion. Idealism is great but put it to good use not this bullshit.

  • @fweeeew your comment was retarded other than the spelling mistakes and bad grammar it has nothing to do with video, and how does someone earn their wealthy? lol you retard.

  • I Want the United States to WIN THE WORLD CUP!!!!!

  • Get rid of religions!

  • @MrAsolis81 No more Obama worship. Hear hear!

  • @prrolg Ah conservatism. So base and simple. A philosophy only defined by what it is "against" rather than what it is "for".

  • @rubino83 More opposition rather than less is in order for the current administration. Seems recent election polling reflects agreement

  • @prrolg Thank you for... whatever that meant. As I said: Defined by what you are against, not what you are for.

  • @prrolg YEAH OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA

YEAH CHANGE FINALLY CHANGE IN MY POCKETS

    YEAH!!! CHUGG SOME BEEEEER!!

  • @godscuttingyoudown Rob a bank? LOL

  • @MrGrevy That's a typical selfish answer. You are stealing other nations' resources for your own benefits, That's a big American problem my friend (Survival of the fittest is rejected by Civility). That is not Fair (if you are considering the Human aspect of it!). You are not better that an African Man. If you were in Africa, you will do just the same, the big powers are blacking the weakest from development. And don't be too optimistic about America, cos it's Asia's turn now.

  • @benmoro if africans were in the same position right now they would do the same without batting an eye. Just like my nation china and other asian countries are gonna be surpassing u americans economically and standard of living and are currently stealing away all you yankees jobs. we have no pity at all for doing this.

  • @mistapiccolo Yes, it is commonly known that the new Asians are wicked, as any other civilization at its rise. With that "No pity" custom to u guys have, I can easily see the future atrocities that ur army wouldn't mind doing in order to secure resources and block the west (or exterminate it). I hope ill die before seeing that day.

  • In the end only the strongest peoples survive if you look at nature. Thats why i know china has a bright future and u americans future is nothing but one of welfare, financial dept, and unemployment.

  • @benmoro There is some truth to that. However, it's the multi nationals' fault not the american peoples' fault. America is on the wrong path, but it will be fine with the right leadership and some restrictions on corporations and bank practices imo. It would be nice if we stopped sending aid to these ungrateful countries though, as it never does any appreciable good. South africa is just a disaster and they starved after killing the white farmers...so I don't have much sympathy there.

  • @MrGrevy The under developed countries (including Africa) is not in need of US help. All what they need, is to let them deal with their problems on their own. All d issues that those countries have, are post-colonial consequences. Do you really think that d US is sending Money to African countries (dictatorships) to help? There is no morality (pity) at the international level. Now China is pushing hard to gain African notoriety over d west. D game will always be d same, only players change.

  • Open to religion?

Hahaha please, the Koran wants to kill me righ now. How do accept that.

  • Super powers!

  • every new generation will think this, reason, history repeats itself.

  • @MrGrevy Trolls like you are such a sad joke. So much anger at Berkeley graduates with their entire lives ahead of them and a world that will welcome their intelligence and capabilities, which, more than familial wealth or reputation, earned their diplomas, while you sit idly regretting an existence wasted in the darkness of your mom's basement. Poor little guy. Get a hobby. Better yet, get a life. Start now and you might even be able to compete with my dog for a cashier job at McDonalds.

  • @HPAndranix You seem to have a problem with projection my angry friend. I assume since you are super duper smart you know what that is. Your comments are as fascinating as they are disturbing. I am thinking you may be a bit unstable or have a borderline personality. I do hope you get help and I pray for your victims.

  • @MrGrevy You seem to have a problem with your position on Berkeley graduates. You'll attack people's comments celebrating them, then drop all substantial arguments in favor of ad hominem attacks when I call you out. I'll assume that since you figured out youtube, you can also use google to figure out what that is. You have still refused my request for an example of an influential person from the "real world". You can't stand up for your own opinions. If I were religious, I would pray for you.

  • @HPAndranix Well I would say that there are many influential people from the "real world". Jane Addams, Martin Luther King Jr., Oprah...there are innumerable people from humble beginnings who became influential. Did you not think there were? Maybe I'm not understanding how you define the real world.

  • @MrGrevy Martin Luther King Jr. was an incredible academic who entered college at 15, then got degrees in sociology, divinity, and theology. I think those can count as what you deemed "worthless" degrees. Oprah got a full ride scholarship from TSU studying communication and, as you can see from her stances on pretty much everything, is idealistic and liberal. Jane Addams was financially privileged. She learned about the poor from reading Charles Dickens, and her father got her into school.

  • @HPAndranix Jacob Riis.

  • @MrGrevy Exception proves the rule, but I must congratulate you on finding such an interesting, obscure, and inspiring example.

  • thank god it wasn't easy

  • @MrGrevy Anyone else?

  • What do I want?

Realization of the reality that is the world. Have an effort to change the lives of your neighbor for the better. Stop thinking big picture. Small movements impact the greater. You don't need to live in a white house to change the world.

  • @MrGrevy They, and in four years, I, will be the people making a difference in the world, uncovering the mysteries that propel the earth's rotation, leading the great social changes of the 21st century. Taking what we learn at Cal and applying it to the "parasite professions" that make the world better for your plebeians, while you will be taking up your dear old mum's bandwidth attacking the educated minority with the fame you envy, and the skill you need. Sad.

  • @HPAndranix The Earth's rotation? Good lord you sound like a moron. Yes we really need more banking scandals and class action lawsuits! What would we do without them improving our lives? You actually believe that? And fame? Graduating college makes you famous? What an utterly bizarre comment.

  • @MrGrevy The fame comment was a reference to Lord Byron's Don Juan you limey illiterate skunk. You can't even spell "plebeian" correctly when it's sitting right in front of your myopic eyes. "Trust fund turds"? They're Cal people, not a bunch of Harvard legacies. Better learn a little about the system you're bashing. Good lord you sound like a moron taking little snippets of a conversation and responding without noticing that I'm responding to your inane comments.

  • @MrGrevy I will remind you, again, that you have failed to provide me with an example, deciding to resort to ad hominem attacks rather than arguing intelligently. But now that I think about it, you're right. If all of us went to London Community College and learned to semi-eloquently attack our superiors over the internet like you, the world would be a much better place. Forget ending the recession and finding a cure for cancer, everyone should endeavour to be just like you.

  • @MrGrevy

But I agree, they are very privileged because, regardless of which ranking scheme you use, whether it's the Newsweek rating system, Jiao Tong University's, Washington Monthly, US News, etc. EVERYONE knows Berkeley is the best Public University on the Planet by far and most ratings place it in the top ten of ALL universities in the World. Yes, they are academically, perhaps even socially, privileged. But, as the stats evince, not economically (at least not at the outset).

  • Who cares about your thoughts my fellow graduates. In the end of everything we are all still fucked when it comes to getting a job

  • @MrGrevy

Congratulations on creating a Straw Man. You didn't do a very good job, but ya did it. These kids go to the best Public University on the Planet. They are definitely privileged. But that privilege is of a different kind than what my comment was addressing. I was replying to someone who said these were silver spoon kids or something. There couldn't be a more erroneous comment. 1/3 Berkeley students receive Pell Grants. I believe that's the highest proportion in the nation.

  • @MrGrevy What you label "pre programmed talking points about equality and justice", I consider the highest possible standards for any person, educated or not. You have still failed to provide me with an example. There is also a difference between being educated and being a goofy brainwashed sheep spouting pre-programmed talking points that attack the educated for their enlightened position above the uneducated rabble that makes up the "real" world.

  • @MrGrevy You are sadly misguided if you believe that an education acts as a hindrance to greatness, as you suggest in your unsupported responses. Please give me an example of someone who didn't dream big and seem naive when they were young, who made a difference in the world. If any of the big influential figures of today had decided to lay down and "get a clue" about the harsh and unforgiving "real" world you expound, humanity would never progress.

  • How did I know what these do-nothing twits were going to say? Good lord it's as if their programming is the same everywhere. That affirmative action special whining about people not having anything...ugh. Feel free to donate YOUR money to try to solve the problem. Cross eyed dullard. These people are all worthless morons. "Women in politics"?? Yeah I think we've had an over representation of women in politics for about 50 years. Disgusting.

  • Where's my White scholarship Pleeze?

  • Make education mandatory. It is mandatory for being smart. Although human being are still the kind of animals (or beings--depending on which religion you follow) that only move upon being stimulated, they are also capable of acting out of their own will. Only education molds an enlightened human being. This is very needed for a peaceful world. We need more people who works with brains and less with feelings aimed only to self serve. Greed is not the only tool of evolution. Reason also is a tool.

  • @Mikethekite10534 Funny to hear an illiterate praise education.

  • Berkley! I'd Bet most of those young men are full of "SPUNK" and a lot of the chicks are carpet munching N.O.W. Cows who want more equality also as long as we in fly over country are paying for it! We Have Too Much? Come to Al Gores Tennessee, and see if the Appalachian people could meet your hopes and dreams for a great salary, My highest paying job was nearly $26,000 a year with a 40 mile commute great huh... Oh, sorry, I have Too much ! Thanks To Progressives and Liberals. OBAMA.plug yo hole!

  • @highlander00 who cares how much you make?

  • They got 2 more years to find work or die, until 2012.

  • I see in the future, that capitalism killing world.

  • Bobby Young is full of "spunk"..............…..............……….……if you haven't laughed yet you're probably female, gay, or Bobby Young.

  • In the future I want every person in the world to believe in Jesus Christ and be saved from their sins, go to heaven, and escape the future eternal lake of fire.

  • @fweeeew picture this: The US (and most of the ex-colonizers now called industrialized countries) have access and control 90% of the resources on earth. When you work hard in the US you become wealthy like yourself. But, when you work hard in a poor African country (Swaziland for instance) you'll barely be able to buy 1 lbs of rice to feed your family.

That's what most of ppl describe as Unfair.

  • @scurry64

    Why?

  • @T1memaster Faggot bitch too scared to unblock me, only cry harder

  • @T1memaster I wish i had a boyfriend like you x

  • @fweeeew Sadly the education system must have failed you, or you're innately ignorant. Either way, if you're going to critique the #1 public university in the country, you might want to learn to speak English.

  • Everybody talks all nice and about good things cause they're hyped but its all bullshit at the end!

  • To you who condemn the optimism of these graduates and their "innocence" thinking that they can make a difference, because they've spent the last 17 years of their lives encased in an academic environment, fuck you. I defy you to find a major influential figure who was not isolated from the "real world". Presidents, politicians, global leaders, are all in a completely different class from us plebeians, and they're the ones who make the difference for the rest of us.

  • @HPAndranix

are you that chocolate rain guy?

    just wondering...

    S.

  • once you make your first million, forced financial equality doesn't look as enticing.

  • @fweeeew Well, unfortunately too many people in this country already feel like people should be responsible for everyone's actions. This is really a dead end street. People need to be responsible for their own actions and get their act together. I applaud you for working hard and becoming financially successful. I wish more people would do the same.

  • @5tonyvvvv

Silver spoon? You either don't understand the term or you're pontificating about topics that you have absolutely no background or training in

1/3 Berkeley Students receive Pell Grants.

BTW, It doesn't matter which ranking scheme you use, whether it's the Newsweek rating system, Jiao Tong University's, Washington Monthly, US News, etc. EVERYONE knows Berkeley is the best Public University on the Planet and most ratings place it in the top ten of ALL universities in the World

  • that was cool

  • nice

  • @putmeinavile

  • @putmeinavile you said before I could......

  • a helpful end to it.

  • people say they are going to change the world but end up becoming the thing they hate.

  • UC SANTA CRUZ!!

  • @phaseTwoo lolol lmao

  • yea college is the shit without it I won't even have a life hahaha

  • good luck getting a descent job!!!

  • Education is the key to Unity. United States of America, God bless you!

  • TRY TO HAVE FUN!!!

  • wow

  • at 2:15, did that guy say "I'm full of spunk"

  • I like a future where we realize Obama isn't a friend of the Black Man.

  • @Rodnus Plus he is just another white president.

  • Ilike a future where the man next to me is not identified by its color, culture, nation but by what he is. I like a future where we all are equal and share the earth without needing to kill one another

  • I hope to graduate from there in 2015!!!! Go Golden Bears!!!!

  • @way2smart: you're absolutely right. The huge majority of the world's problems at this point can be linked to overpopulation. But it will never be politically popular enough to say that people need to take responsibility for not having so many children. Meh, over a half a million foster kids out there ready for adoption, but everyone wants one with their nose.

  • I want to not feel judged cause I'm white!!!!! Seriously.

Oh and as far as politics goes, I'm APATHETIC

  • i want the us to start leading the world in the right direction by making some tough choices like limiting our population growth (capping our population - limiting the net effects of migration across the borders, domestic births, and domestic mortality to a zero sum), capping carbon emissions, and focusing on job creation (I haven't thought about the best strategies for that part); mostly we need to recognize that we are entering an historic phase where more people= lower average quality of life

  • at least globally, although probably in the US also and if not, it will be true for that region soon too

  • @Way2Smart22 That sounds great, Hitler. Should we kill all the firstborn, Pharoah? Learn some history of how well this works, jackass. BTW, United States is CAPITALIZED, Chairman Mao.

  • @Way2Smart22 America's population is not really what I'm worried about. The populations of the Third World need to start learning how to use birth control. I hope it will never get to the point in America where we will need to pass laws like China has. We do need tougher immigration enforcement and stop the Political Correctness Crap. We need a Safer, Cleaner Environment. Oil Free, No Oil Spills, Electric, Wind, and Solar Energy. We also need to Seriously Fund NASA for the future.

  • elezar cha-cha 2012 ?

  • This is so wonderfully encouraging. I hope these people remain optimistic and committed to making the world a better place. Go graduates of 2010!! Each one gives me so much hope for the future of the world.

  • very nice. great to see people who also know what the world needs

  • Hi I no you grate Hope you find your dream job wish you the best

  • Hi there I love your video clip and I agree with you I love my world two

  • Its encouraging to see, hear and feel the enthusiasm of these graduates. Despite the naysayers, I applaud their efforts and pray God grants them the necessary resources to make change happen. To all the haters...keep doing what you do. Friends support but haters motivate and give wings to the imagination of the truly determined. Peace and Blessings.

  • "More equality" demands the second bright young thing who got the mic stuck in her face.

If you're "black" and your SAT is 1270 chances are in the 90 percentile range that you will get into a major university. If you are "white" and at 1270 you have a 14 percent chance.

If you are "Asian" and scored 1270 your chances are 10 percent.

Is that what she means by "equality" ?

  • @alphecca2539 I think that since the Writing section was added, if you're "anything" and get a 1270 you aren't going anywhere. XD

  • What's up with the hate comments, I think they're only jealous of those smart young students who have hopes and successful future waiting for them, if you think you're a smart-ass try to be better than them! LOSER!!

  • Wtf? What is up with all the pathetic and hateful comments towards these kids? Its probably from frustrated little pricks who couldn't achieve anything in there lives and hate on others who do. Lol get a life.

  • I want work for everyone who is willing to accept a job, no more unemployment, no more need for unemployment insurance, and health insurance for everyone.

  • 축하합니다 Congratulations!

  • I THINK THATS TERRIFIC, CONGRAGULATIONS. TO ALL BERKLEY GRADUATES!

  • I want the future to be like Terminator Salvation. Go Skynet!!!!

  • Wow, I love what she says at 2:00 ... don't just consume knowledge, but produce knowledge. Also, do something WITH knowledge (IMO)

  • I would love to hear if these new young professionals will be looking for lucrative careers now? Will you rate yourselves at the same financial means as the 'status quo' working class Americans or will you asapire to drive a BMW or Mercedes?

Perhaps start a business like I did 12 years ago and hope to make a good living? Own a nice home? Or do you aspire to be even with, or even believe that there can not be POOR people, middle class and the better off class or wealthy folks? Hmm, I'm sceptical

  • i want the future to be like the fifth element

  • theres always gonna be haters. always.

  • these comments are so depressing. people are actually hating on a video of hopeful, inspired students striving for equality, and comparing them to hitler? what is this world coming to

  • What's with all the hate in the comments?

  • Job market sucks...good luck though...Hope you don't sellout to corporate greed or government corruption.......almost everyone does

  • They don't even realise the world they're going in!! Good luck to all graduates!!

  • @Jerra49 I guess I could go to a competitive progressive school and "dream" of a better world or I could just make asinine comments to make myself feel better about myself.

  • why would you hate this video haters?

  • huh, i was hoping someone would have said "money"

silly rabbit, trix are for kids

  • I see windmills...

  • @skifast5

    idiotic idealism ?

what a worse place the world would be without the USA?

oh my god , what are you talking about , they just kids , i bet you are one of the those people whom call USA , America , why did some people just miss geography 101

  • 1:51 is the best choice in my mind

  • obviously, most people who have written on this site know nothing of hgher ed.

Berkley is not a private school and most of these-all-of these students got in based on hard work....

....and now they have a massive student financial load loan that they can never walk away from even-even under bankruptcy laws.

I am sure enough of them got business degrees to guarantee that this world will remain F'd up.

BUSINESS DEGREE!!...what a hoot!!!...like vocational school, should not be in higher ed.

  • They'll be executing all-new logistical paradigms by enabling the synergy to actualize their potential through directed decisions and consolidating connections to their spiritual, physical, and economic dualities to rethink the structure of the macrosystemic and microsystemic to defeat the forces of those given to loquacity by extraneous bombastic circumlocution energized by obsolete patriarchical heirarchies.

And we need more women in politics.

  • That Asian dude..."The only race is the human race"...dig it.

  • @jay78wash Equality for everyone else.

  • I want 2 go this college.

  • Go Bears!

  • I applaud the graduates sentiments, but I have to say I'm concerned for a generation that thinks texting is real communication rather than simply an exchange of information. I hope they'll take Ms. Shlain's advice and unplug and actually talk to each other to gain greater understanding. I also hope they'll first join Americorps/Peace Corps to see how the system we call the world works from the inside. Only through real observation and involvement will they be able to affect meaningful change.

  • I don't understand why there is so much negativity..,,lol. Congrats Berkley students, best of luck in your future endeavors. I love this optimism when there are so many who would give up so easily.

Haters = bitter individuals who probably don't have as much going on for them as these graduates

Graduate at 2:00 said it best, hoping "we just don't consume knowledge but are producers of knowledge."

  • Why are you guys hatin on these kids? They can succeed in wat ever they like I know it's not gonna be easy but just becuz u couldn't doesn't mean they cant

  • In the 1960s and 1970s I wanted the same things they want now. I am still working for those things. Although the right wing conservatives, big business, and organized religion continue to put down humanists, it's still worth the fight. Graduates, don't give up your ideologies. Make it happen! I'm glad to see that you want a better world. Don't be put off by cynicism and sarcasm.

  • As a former student (c/o 2008), I'm happy to see that the Berkeley spirit continues to live within all the students that walk through Sproul Plaza year after year. If the haters out there knew what hard work looked like, they would shut the hell up. My parents immigrated to the U.S. over 30 years ago & gave the little they had to my sisters & I so that we could get a good education. I often gave up having a social life to study or work or volunteer. & I still do, even though I don't have to.

  • Yea good

  • i want a cookie :D

  • :D UC BERKELEY!

  • Future lawyers, consultants, and I-bankers of America.

  • @mojojodon idk man i think america has fucked over a lot of countries....

  • i hope your dreams continue to flourish once your first sallie mae bill comes in the mail and you're still chasing butterflies in a daisy field. go forth, follow your dreams, you are the leaders of America!

  • these are the lucky pe
