I find that the environment and the people appear very similar to HK. I'm glad that Singlish being recognized as an international language.
singaporean should not be proud of singlish. Some of us did not have a chance to learn proper english and it became mixture of chinese-hokkien type of mix english. I had difficulty understanding what S'poreans were saying when I first came to S'pore to work. I had to learn Singlish and now converse in Singlish with my colleagues, but switch back when I do presentations. My son goes to a childcare, but I need to tell him the difference between Singlish and English. He picks up a lot from the other kids like "where got?" (as opposed to "I don't have any"), "can u do like this?" ("can u do it like this?"), and "why like that?" ("why are you doing that?"

Singlish is just, Expressing as much as possible in the shortest sentence possible. like, "what are you looking at ? " . we can just express it as " see what see" . In attempt to communicate, they created Singlish. But as SG progess, our english improved. We now speak good english. Although we speak Singlish occasionally, we can always switch back to proper english. Singlish is part of our culture though its not regconised. We can speak proper english. Its only of a matter of choice.

Well, indeed Singlish has yet to be recognised as a "Standard" Language. However, we ought to recall that English wasn't recognised as a Standard either up till the sixteenth century, when England broke away from Roman Catholicism and hence Latin's decline as the official language in politics, religion and research. Singlish is a language, simply because people speak it. The people define language, not the dictionary. Once upon a time in England, English wasn't more than a barbaric language. From the fifteenth century onwards, then the standardisation process began. English borrowed loads from French and Latin. It was after the OED was compiled that English became recognised as what it is today. Language evolves. Today's "mistake" can be tomorrow's Standard Language. Singlish is even studied by linguists.

whether or not you malaysians understand and has used these slangs long before Singaporeans have used it is a moot point. Singlish itself is a "borrowing" of all kinds of phrases/slangs from English, Mandarin, Hokkien, Malay etc etc and blending it all into a rojak of its own unique flavour. and as a WHOLE, we call it Singlish. So what if we have "borrowed" a few slangs that malaysians have 'invented"? does this make it less Singlish?

I had difficulty understanding what S'poreans were saying when I first came to S'pore to work. I had to learn Singlish and now converse in Singlish with my colleagues, but switch back when I do presentations. My son goes to a childcare, but I need to tell him the difference between Singlish and English. He picks up a lot from the other kids like "where got?" (as opposed to "I don't have any"), "can u do like this?" ("can u do it like this?"), and "why like that?" ("why are you doing that?"

Even though you speak British or American accent, if people are very unruly, nothing will happen. It's better to speak your own accent than imitating others and just speak bad words to others

Isn't Singlish like derived from Manglish? Haha. Both sound the same only, I can understand Singlish, yet I've never been in Singapore or met its local, lol. But I think Singlish uses much more english words, Manglish tends to ignore english words completly and replace them to make it simpler. Example: "Are you going to the bathroom?" = "You go toilet ah?"

Singlish is just, Expressing as much as possible in the shortest sentence possible. like, "what are you looking at ? " . we can just express it as " see what see" . We just want as much to go through in the shortest time possible. its kinda interesting. its not bad education, its just part of our culture. Firstly, there r Chinese, Malay, Eurasians, Indians & others living in SG. At first, ppl have difficulty communicating wif each other bcos they all speak in diff languages. In attempt to communicate, they created Singlish. But as SG progess, our english improved. We now speak good english. Although we speak Singlish occasionally, we can always switch back to proper english. Singlish is part of our culture though its not regconised. We can speak proper english. Its only of a matter of choice.
