The XF is really something to behold. I sold my Korg M3 for the XF. I've always liked Yamaha's sound, but hated the flow of their workstations. A larger screen (Once owned the ES) has helped in seeing what you are doing. This workstation simply rocks! The sounds are just like the music you hear on the radio. It's just simply that amazing. Check it out in a store.
Motif suck, for real, i ve hot xs7 before now i got xf8... i will sell it as soon as i can, roland is sooooooooooooooooooooooosoooooooooooo much better, you cant even emagen untill u try it...BELIVE ME DONT BUY XF, FUCK ARPPEGGIOS, ROLANDS UPGRADES ARE SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@JureN4life Hi, I have the Fantom G and Motif XF, the sound in the Fantom is very poor, however in the Motif XF the sound is very clean ang great, its my opinion.
Did anyone else notice the keyboard changes from the 88 key to the 76 once he starts playing the clav? Makes sense of course, but it was so done so slyly.
Anyways, what a freakin terrible demo. Might as well have played mary had a little lamb on that clav. All rigid, like a bread stick.
I just got done playing one at a church. I was so underwhelmed, it looks really aggressive in person tough. Other than that, there is nothing that would make me want it. Sounds EXACTLY like the XS/ES neither of which I never cared for. I was expecting at least a sonic improvement like what happened with Fantom X/G. I guess the Motif sound will never grow on me.
@ChurchBoy0487 ... if you want, you can go to Yamaha Motif XF via Sweet-water and check out the presentation by the Yamaha Tech called: Mister, he gives an overview of the new features of the XF. He does say that the sounds of the XF are the same as the XS/ES, but that there are new wave forms and new compatibility features in the XF. Hope this will help. Peace...
@ChurchBoy0487 Same her bro. I don't get the fuss about the motif. You go to any church and they have one. We have a s90ES in my church. The only reason why we have it is for the piano. Much better than the motifs. Other than that the regular motif piano or other sounds haven't grown on me either. Which is good because there are other nice keys out there; kurzweil, maybe Roland. Korg is another company that will probably never grow on me. oh well.
@Kurzland It appears we have the same taste in boards and I can certainly agree on the s90ES. Thats the only yamaha that I found tolerable. At my church we have a Roland Fantomx7 and that keyboard is my right arm, but strangely almost all motif players i know hate the Fantom. I want the Kurzweil PC3K7 when it releases, and to keep the Fantom sound I'll just find a Sonic Cell. I'm the same way with Korg. Could never get with their sound.
@ChurchBoy0487 Have you looked at the Korg Kronos? I looked at some vids of it yesterday and the Korg has really improved the piano sound. The other sounds are great too. I don't know, maybe Korg might grow on me. :D
@Kurzland I see. Rebranded Oasys so it seems. I don't even know and probably don't want to know how much the thing costs. I'm pretty sure between the neighborhood of $6-8,000+ dollars which of course I couldn't dream of affording especially with a SSHD inside the thing. Sounds really good which feels very strange considering the fact that I've always found Korg to be at the bottom of my list of anything.
@ChurchBoy0487 I hear the 88 key note version will cost $3799. Not bad. Same cost as other major keyboards. Another good keyboard that I heard of is the new Nord Stage 2. It sounds really good, the only thing is that ir costs around $4200. o.O
i know yamaha always improves there sounds when they come out with a new keyboard just wish i could afford to get one , sold my original motif 6 last year! :(
@prince4d Sure it's a hefty price tag. We bought the ES when it first came out (when it was most expensive). But just save up. It's well worth it. Still have the ES and use it all the time - great synth.
I'm looking at getting one of these as my friend uses the ES8 but I can't rely on using his all the time. I was just wondering does the XF have the KB:Nu Phasing and KB:Sweetness sounds? Cheers.
@tuckerrr92 es8 is the pre-pre version of this one... so XF has all the voices of the ES but in a more realistic sound quality and its has a lot of new sounds the ES doesn't have
Music Composition begins in the BRAIN ... Keyboards are outputs from your brain ,thats really where the music is ... And Yamaha Keyboards make that come alive for everyone to hear ..... Making music Inspiration Easy..
I think if you are more inclined towards instrumental music (human played stuff, guitars, flutes, violines n all).. kurz PC would be the better choice.. and for techno/electronic/trance.. better go for Korg..
@thereason10 Have owned pc3 for years and i can guarantee you this yamaha is by far better. Don't buy pc3, it's based totally on over 10 years old instrument and is severely outdated with it's sample sets and you name it. It has bugs that really bugs me and it's been over year from last OS update. Despite some years on the market, it still doesn't have it's first ROM set released. Pianos and rhodes are horrible, but strings are superior in PC3. Still I'd change pc3 any day for this synth.
Though i don't own a kurzweil pc3, but I have seen its demo videos (like this one for motif), especially the ones by geoffrey gee.. even if you talk in terms of arpeggiators, then Kurzweil PC3 being a performance controller, has 16 arpeggiators (from a video by sweetwater) compared to only 4 on the motif xs/xf.. and the orchestral sounds on the Kurzweil definitely seem way too realistic than the motif, alongwith various programmed sound effects.
Korg m3 can produce different attack rates in strings patch depending on velocity. It makes the sound more realistic. Sounds like this feature is absent in XF. So, there's still room for improvement.
From bottom of my heart, there are a little differences between XF and the previous station XS. Since no big change, as a hobby for music, or even as a professional man, if you have XS then no need to update to buy a new XF or just buy XF rack if you really wanna have some new wave form. Not buying until the next generation for a significant change.
Why is this instrument so expensive? From what I have heard in all of these demos it sounds worse than my Kurzweil PC3 that costs less than half the price.
It seems to survive on its arpeggiators which are rendered totally useless as soon as you play with a band that doesn't use a click track.
For the biggest wave ROM of any keyboard you would expect the sounds to be rich and full and to be honest with you they sound pretty poor.
@StrappingYoungStu My thoughts exactly. Was never much a Moif fan. All those sliders and still only 4 parts?Almost a gig of base ROM and it still sounds more or less the same. Looking at the other vids, this board is reminding me of of the KorgM3 with all this one button auto accompaniment malarkey. Looks like their making the same mistake Roland made with the fanG. If Kurz wants to gain MAJOR ground, NOW is the time because IMO the Big 3 have killed themselves.
@ChurchBoy0487 I have an M3 and I completely agree, thats frustrating enough, I think personally it sounds better than the XF demoed here though. Come on Korg and Yamaha, you must be able to do better with your sounds, and bare minimum 8 zones per setup/combi/performance - there are 16 MIDI channels, so ideally 16.... and we should not run out of polyphony or FX capability if we decide to use all of those zones.
@StrappingYoungStu You are obviously new to synths. Workstations have always been expensive. Most bands don't use an 88 key workstation on stage; they carry a dedicated electronic piano. The 88-key workstation owners are primarily home hobbyists and pro studio owners.
@TomZentra I am talking about expensive compared to the competition. As I mentioned before my PC3 costs literally half what this costs and its not even advertised as a workstation, its a performance controller, with more workstation functions than this seems to. You can use 16 zones per combi/setup to the XFs 4, the sounds, despite being generated from a ROM much smaller, sound warmer and more like the instruments they are trying to replicate
@StrappingYoungStu You are comparing dissimilar objects. The competition is the workstations from Korg and Roland. The PC3 isn't in the the same class.
@TomZentra .....and whats more the PC3 is designed to be compact and portable and useable on stage. In fact the only thing the Yamaha Motifs have over the Kurzweil is a bunch of arpeggiators that take away individuality and make everyone who touches a keyboard able to make some sort of loop based composition, which isn't actually musically creative at all. Anyone can mix and match and play an entire tune with one finger... music or gimmick?
