  • Heavens to Murgatroid! Cab Calloway...the King of Cool...on Sesame Street! Guess they gave him this song to do because "Minnie the Moocher" would have been much to risque for the kiddies. Amazing that the late great Cabs still had such awesome energy so late in life. Truly he was a force of nature. THANKS for sharing this delightful clip with us! And may ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year! :)

  • This is the sweetness. I love cab

  • this guy's good. I send 2 my friends and 5 stars

  • haha... I always liked this one! :D

  • cab used to love to gamble up at yonkers raceway---he was some character

  • scatman's mentor

  • you think they would have brought out the big guns when it came to a muppet back up band for cab calloway. those guys are a little lackluster.

  • Cab was fabulous. But I have never heard anyon call him "Cabby" ...never. Who made that up?

  • Holy crap! At remebr this after so many years. I'm now 32 & I remeber trying to sing along to this as a kid. Didn't do so well. :)

  • he was still doing his shows well into the 1990's i remember seeing an ad for his new years eve show on some fancy hotel in the east side in nyc (carlyle???) i bet he had those rich mofos hidey-hidey on straight to his bank act.lol.

  • Not a wrinkle in his face.

  • cab was active from 1931 to his death in 1994...thats about the longest musical career i have ever heard of.. 63 years!!

  • Actually he first recorded in 1930 and his first recording session produced a number 16 hit, his version of "St. Louis Blues". The same year he filled in for Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club, before later taking over as house band! He actually had two more substantial hits after that, before recording the original version of his huge, career defining smash "Minnie the Moocher" in march of 1931! But yeah, his is the longest career I can think!

  • @caloscalante1518 Pete Seeger beats that—69 years, from 1940 to the present day. And there's Little Jimmy Dickens—late 1930s to the present.

  • Sesame Street is the best thing ever on TV. This is just classic.

  • cab calloway!

  • You are not really famous unless you have been on Sesame Street.

  • or muppets

  • So true!

  • haha, Cab Calloways so awesome.

  • smoooooooth :D

  • There aren't guys that can sing that well, and there in their 20's and 30's. Damn he was talented.

  • Cab the legend of a man! That guy was the image of cool in the 40's-50's.

  • funny

  • thanks.....i love cab calloway and blues brothers too!!!!!!

  • Cab Callaway was the coolest!!!!... seems like the two headed monster was one of his biggest fans ;)

  • The king of Suave and Swing!!!

  • aaahh!! I remember watching this with my sisters and we'd drive my mom crazy singing this all day..heehee

  • lol he breaks

  • I remember Sesame Street came on twice a day (same episode). I made sure to watch the second viewing so I could watch it again. Love it!

  • Cab Calloway, may he rest in peace, was the definition of Cool..

  • i love how they got a jazz legend who used to sing about marijuana (in the song "Reefer Man" ) and "kickin' the gong around" = 1920-30's slang for smoking opium, on sesame street :D <3<3<3

  • ur an idiot thats not do-wop thats skat....know ur stuff bro

  • Cab Calloway, the coolest cat 2 ever grace a stage!!! Teh swagger on that brotha set the standard!!!

  • I wanted to see him do reefer man on Sesame Street, but I guess this is good too.

  • Yeh, this is pretty awesome to see. But, it's hard not to think about him singing "Reefer Man" or "Minnie the Moocher" to a bunch of muppets.

  • I really liked this video he amazing

  • Its sad to think that kids these days would look at this is as jibber jabber but listen to genres of music like "noise" and "screamo" They just don't make em' like Cab Calloway anymore. Awesome video.

  • I remember watching this when I was little and loving it to bits. It's such a fun, entertaining song and I fondly recall bopping along and singing along. Thank you for this.

  • FTW. I remember this shit from a kid.

  • Listen to that do-wap! Niccce.

  • Cab is the king of Scat!

  • boy, he sure didn't age well

and the original is much better....

  • I think he aged VERY well. I hope I'm doing that well at that age.

  • Well he was probably in his eighties, i'd like to see you looking good when you're in your eighties matey.

  • When I saw him in the Blues Brothers I had no idea he was born in 1907.

  • I hope you die.

  • isnt that a bit extreme for a pathetic internet argument?

  • Soul74, you could use a little "churchin' up".

  • What a huge talent he was. He was probably in his 80s when he did these. Talk about making your mark on the world.

  • This was the 80's so he was in his early 70's. He had a stroke recovered and than died in the 90's.

  • I feel fortunate to have been able to see and interview the great Cab Calloway several times in the late seventies and early eighties.

After Frank Sinatra, the most gifted entertainer I have ever had the pleasure to see. And a very nice, shy, articulate and honest man.

  • Great stuff.

  • Even in his old age Cab Calloway still had that great singing voice.

  • I know this song from my band teacher who at a concert started yodeling the "hidee hidde hiddee ho" part, and it was really funny, and this guy, although he is the real deal, sings it way faster than my band teacher, who is Mr.Winstead, who teaches at Harriet Eddy. He sang at the random concert.

IF YOU ARE FROM EDDY POST A COMMENT.

  • South Park recycled the idea with Mr.Hanky The Christmas Mess,

He used "Hiiiiiidy Hooooooo" as a Greeting,

    RIP Cab you Present.

  • This skit was what began my music career later on in life...god, I just love cab.

  • Holy hell, I KNEW Hi De Hi De Hi De Hi existed in the deep recesses of my brain before i even heard Minnie The Moocher, and this must have been it!!!

  • he sounds great for being as old as he is here

  • All I can think of is Blues Brothers when I watch this.

  • i remember watching this on sesame street when i was a kid

  • Cab Calloway certainly did a great job of singing "Hi De Ho Man" with The Muppets, don't you think?

  • yes he was the greatest!

  • I looove this :D

    Cab. Freaking awesome

  • Cab Calloway, he must've been ancient, hi de ho was written in like what, the 30s?

  • This is probably from the beginning of the 80's (around the same time he appeared in Blues Brothers), so he would be a bit over 70 in this one.

  • calloway rocks ^^ i have all his songs

  • So great he lived long enough to sing for the Muppets in full vitality!

  • This guy was amazingly creative with generating made up words. His singing style is still unequaled to this day in terms of individuality.

  • lol Cab being so causal to the muppets "SAYYY DUDESSSS"

  • OMG I love it!

  • What year was this from???

  • God fucking Damn it that's awesome.

Can you imagine living in the days when there was enough talent in the world to have it guest starring on Sesame Street?

  • You mean a sure way to be called awesome.

  • RIP Cab Calloway.

  • Wow, what a great post.

  • I always loved this song.

  • Flawless scat singing.

  • I love the Call/Response bit, and I especially love Cab Calloway's schtick. It always makes me want to join in the response part of the song.

  • Ya thanks tips, I knew that.

  • I wish I was as cool as Cab...

  • I remember watching this episode with my Grandmother many years ago. Talk about speaking to different generations at the same time. Awesome and classic.

  • Cab calloway is one of the absolute monoliths of pure coolness. And sesame street rocks for having him.

  • Sesame Street did a fine job of introducing worth-while things to kids.

  • He1s a genius ..Was thirty years ahead of his time check out Cab Calloways Reefer Song

  • He is awsome!!!!!!

  • Hey, I'm 25 and I still looooove the muppets, they're awesome!!

  • even as a 17yr old i cant believe how funny sesame street can be!

  • Sounds like a Aladdin song at the beginning at around 35 seconds, but an amazing song.

  • Cab was awesome, what a pure talent

  • I nice little sanitized version of Minnie the Moocher. In other words, none of the original words, just the scatting. :-/

  • When I was little, I always thought he said "hiney ho" not Hi De Ho...now I know.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!

So catchy! hi de hi de hi de

  • I don't think our children should be allowed to watch Cab Calloway! lol!

  • no not all of his workings atleast

  • to odietarceo....if Richard Pryor can get on Sesame Street, so can Cab!

  • I hope you are joking, because your statement really makes no sense. If Cab Calloway is unsuitable for Sesame Street because he made some tongue in cheek songs with adult themes, then how many other guests on Sesame Street were inappropriate. How many actors have appeared on Sesame Street who have also appeared in R rated movies. Was there anything unsuitable for children in what you just watched? Why don't you let your kids enjoy something with class rather than crap like Barney.

  • Cab Calloway is THE MAN.

  • this makes my life.

    haha.

i like the background muppet singers.

  • what year was this??

  • No later than 1981. I remember this the first time around. Almost 30 years later and it's still amazing.

  • Hi, loved this version of Cab from the Blues Brothers 1st DVD but particularly like your version with the photos of cab's life. Excellent!

  • Don't know which was cooler, Cab, or the Muppet Show. Both gave Large! Thanks for posting

  • How fun! And cool!

However, I'm new in my neighborhood, folks don't know who I am, and I want to make friends, so I watched this, enjoyed it, but I STIL don't know what to do! Hi-de...wha???

  • How fun! And cool! However...

I've watched this a few times, but folks still don't know who I am, and I still can't make friends!! Hi-De-Ho!!

  • i MiSS THiS! OMG i LOVED THiS ONE SOOOO MUCH! <3333

  • I remember this on TV. That was the first time I ever heard Cab Calloway. My little sister was really young and still watching Sesame Street back then. She would complain to my grandmother when we wanted to watch cartoons, who would then in turn make all of her grandkids aged 8 and older watch Sesame Street with my sister. :-( But THIS was a hot song. My grandmother used stuff like that to justify forcing 8 - 12 year olds to watch this show! Still, I fell in love this song.
