Hearn is outstanding for a theater, where he has to be heard in the back rows, but Depp's performance is much more intense because we can get that much closer to the crazy, as it were. That being said, the movie version of the song is a superior version if only for its slower speed. The song needs to sound like a slow boil, as Sweeney loses all hope and goes completely mad.
Johnny is infinetly better. His dark and slower version of the song is much more emotional. George Hearn just seems to be screaming and yelling all the time. I don't count that as singing. He's far too frantic and odd.
I love them both. Hearn's is an explosion of emotion that's fantastically sung, while Depp's is brooding and builds, making you more and more nervous.
I prefer Depp's version of Sweeney to Hearn's. I really don't like the frantic screaming of Hearn. I think Johnny's version is more emotional. And please don't retaliate with "but that's how it's SUPPOSED to be!". The film and the play are two very different things and the characters are very different.
I don't find Depp's bland. I actually find his a little bit scarier, though I prefer Hearn's version. I like his voice better, and his emotion is wonderful. Unfortunately, the selections for this video show him mostly shouting. To truly see each performance, you'd have to watch both versions in their entirety. Of course, you have to keep in mind that they're two different mediums, and so their performances are dictated by that as well.
Is there a problem with liking both portrayals? Because I do, and it is better than acting like all of the d-bag fanatics running around telling eachother off with their opinions.
now that i think of it, johnny IS better suited to the version of sweeney that tim burton made. it's a great view of sweeney, but i like george's performance better.

I have to disagree with you. Depp's is so bland. Hearn nails it emotionally in my opinion.
