Very entertaining, and humbling, considering the history, and the knowledge we were privy to here. Still, I'm not sure I can let the compressors go... but I'll try less.
"Apart from the old thing of closing curtains, putting rugs on the floor, and gaffer-taping bits of carpet onto the walls, we also used studio screens, as well as things called Tube Traps. If, for instance, someone is playing an acoustic guitar in a quite reverberant room, you can surround the microphone, the player, and the instrument with some of these Tube Traps and they'll radically change the reverberant characteristic of the sound."
i don't think Bruce's transients point of view is true for modern non-live (electronic) music genres
these genres have their own sonic aesthetics, whose goal is not to faithfully represent the sound of live and real world instruments and spaces acoustics
one can state, well, that's not music, but that's another point
@BayanTheOne You have to take into account he is probably referring to the projects/genres he mixes on I doubt Mr.Swedien has or will ever mix a Euro Dance/Electronic/Up tempo Pop track
I'm just a poor boy with my home studio working on my first album and still learning the ropes. I record my music, mix, watch your videos, other videos, read, research, and repeat and I'm already getting better. I'm so honored to learn from the best after being so lost for the longest time with all the amateur advice online. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
@Wes3455 Never mind.. The company name is acoustic sciences.
So.. uhh.. They're kinda pricey.. Looks like a sample order is in line here shortly, followed by a complete disassembly and a trip to the hardware store..
Just like Dave says.. If you can't afford it, learn from wherever possible, use what you have, and make what you can..
I used Bruce's technique of mixing in dim light, turned out to be the best technique to improve my sound. I installed clear Christmas in my studio and used them when I mixed, man, best mix I've ever done!!!
I did a test using the SSL comp on each channel and the SSL bus comp as well all with reasonable settings, then without - the compressed version sounds "better" on first listen but has ultimately lost its impact compared to the non-compressed version.
this guy is awesome. you guys bring to light the best characters in this biz. Please, highlight the humor and shenanigans. Real musicians learn from your off topic converses way more than the tech talk.
I've had so many goes at the compressor and even though I understand what it's doing, I don't get why I should use it. The bypass button always sounds better. Hearing Mr. Swedien's position on this suddenly confirms the gut feeling I have about compressors. I have to use them as part of the course, but I rather switch them off.
Fun show... seriously, it means as much to see guys just talking as if they are talking the business. I am just learning sound and to see 'people' being people and that being the basis for their philosophies in music and mixing. I totally loved the transient talk... it relieves lots of pressure when you can let the dynamics speak for themselves.
Bruce and Dave are both legendary...I learn so much from these guys. Even more than mixing techniques, they give us the attitude for success in the music industry. Wrong motivation equals dead end!! Thank you gentlemen! GROOVECITY
Thanks guys! This was amazing. I don't think I enjoyed one of the episodes as much as this one, although all of 'm contribute to mixes all over the globe. Fantastic!
Unbelievable wealth of knowledge in this episode. I will say, if you worked with the musicians and microphones that Bruce does, you probably wouldn't need compression either!!!! :) BTW, do you think those chat sounds at 49:00 provoked Bruce's synesthesia??? His facial expression is absolutely hilarious.
I JUST BOUGHT A GREAT RIVER ME-1NV MIC-PRE FOR HIP HOP VOCALS (MY 1ST MIC-PRE)... BAE 1073 IS NEXT... JUST HOPE THEIR ALREADY HIGH PRICES DON'T GET ANY HIGHER AFTER DAVE JUST ENDORSED THEM.... LOL
i wish i knew about this show when it aired but i'll be tuned in, hears my ? if anyboby can help me. Ok this Synesthesia thing i understand totally but how could i use that 2 my advantage
@MBL80 theoretically, you could picture certain frequencies (notes if you will). But as Bruce Swedien says, for him it's a distraction. Although, others may find that helping them.
awesome show! @MasteringSound - did you hear the amazing wealth of information laid down? Oh, so sorry if you didn't. That piano miking alone was well worth the visit and to hear which A/D/A's Bruce uses??? THANK YOU, DAVE, for asking the question!
Why he has to call Drew a dog? also im sure Dave is good at what he does but he always seem to talk over people and not let them finish and sometimes he takes too long to figure out what question he is trying to ask the guest..Control that hair my man .....
Great show,Thanks for putting the picture of one of my mentors Roger Nichols up after the show..God bless you guys.He will be greatly missed..Really enjoyed it.
Great stuff! I absolutely enjoy every week of this show...for someone like myself that doesn't have the pleasure of a learning under a professional mixing engineer, these Pensado vids are a huge blessing. Thanks Dave for taking the time to do this every week!
"Amazing" Episode!!! Mr. Swedien is a funny guy!

tube traps are also mentioned by Hugh Padgham
