Is this the ONLY piece of music you have on youtube to demonstrate this wonderful instrument? If my church had given money for a brand new organ half as good as this one, I'd be showing off every single part of it, especially when Matthew Copley has provided such a comprehensive spec.
I can hear the Jazz-influences, but i don't hear the typical Jazz-Rhythms (and i don't mean the syncopations, but the jazz-feel, like laid-back, hitting top-notes, muffled or ghost-notes, that kind of thing!). The end is a typical 7#9#11nat13 chord, if my ears don't cheat on me ;-)
YES, YES, YES. As an organ builder myself, I've been telling people for years that we need to make the king of instruments more relevant to modern listeners, and this is certainly a good start. More music of this nature needs to be written and performed!
Matthew Copley (the chap who built this organ) is an old friend of mine - indeed, he has been a friend of my parents since before I was ever on the scene. He's a fabulous voicer. When we were first aware of this project about ten years ago, we tried to persuade him to go to modern 61/32 compasses, but he ended up sticking to 58/30... It's nice to see him getting some recognition at last, he truly is one of the world's most overlooked organbuilders, and unjustly so.
Thanks for writing. 3 of the 4 Jazz Pieces by Thomas Ross appear on Simon's audio CD "The Organ at the Met," including the lovely "Fuenf Achtel" (5/8). It's a great piece, but this video was done as an "impromptu" bonus during the recording session. We taped only one piece from the CD for YouTube, and we chose to video "Let's Get Rhythm." Best wishes, Frederick Hohman, producer
Stunning! And Armin Becker does some great renditions of Piazolla and Billy Strahorne (Take the A Train)...in Munich. Anybody heard him at St. Mark's? I'm glad to see/hear the pipes foray into jazz.
FANTASTIC! I caused quite a stir on the Mander Forum by suggesting that the organ should be seen to be more relevant to modern music / the modern generation and annoyed a number of people by suggesting that some English organs should host someone as go-ahead as Barbara. John Mander finally threw me off the forum!
Please can you put me on a mailing list for concerts? I've been looking forward to hearing Matthew Copley's organ for a long while. Meanwhile please visit us if you come south!
@latribe oh well, in for a penny and all that... why not suggest Cameron Carpenter or Carlo Curley or someone like that. I have to say, in the area I live I am frowned upon also for thinking that the organ can be used to entertain, in contrast to it's more obvious 'function'. Oh how I wish some people would just lighten up and start enjoying themselves and the music! I'm glad, though that some people havn't forgotten how to do that. There is hope yet!
Way to go Simon, nice to see some up close action as usually at concerts don't really see the console as you know. But what about some Saint Saens (I'm a traditionalist some of the time!) and is it a duck or what? cheers M

Brilliant! A versatile instrument - love those growling reeds. Would be amazing to hear Barbara Dennerlein playing this organ.
