I believe the combined mode is inspired by the Edo era Japanese police officer weapon called a Jutte. A metal rod with a prong along it to catch and potentially break a samurai's blade. Makes sense, it was a law enforcement weapon.
I do think it would have been a hell of a lot better if we'd have a show accurate version of this toy. I think it's sad that we don't get PR toys like in the old days anymore!
