Marketeers try to convince you that diesel engines are clean, but scientists are well aware of the higher pollution caused by diesel engines. (even despite the better fuel consumption, diesel engines are more polluting)

Besides that, petrol engines aren't inefficient, a modern diesel engine has peak efficiency 35-40%, that's 30-35% for a modern petrol engine. Also don't forget that the energy density (MJ/l) of diesel is higher than that of petrol. (38 > 34) => better volumetric consumption.

@luedriver its all a matter of gain from the performance vs the lose of time bcs of its mass and weight.

last year some teams spent tonnes of money on this technology. especially BMW spent lots of cash. they had much hope on this tech. but they cldnt gain the points they were hoping. this made them sell the team and resign from F1 .

some teams managed to work it. especially mclaren and ferrari worked it well. although they were very happy with the results they didnt use it on certain tracks.

a combustion engine has no place as the prime mover in future cars, only maybe a small niche in endurance racing so that part of this car is not too interesting but the flywheel can work for battery EVs too. formula 1 should do that. go battery swap pure electric plus kers. time to give up that archaic ICE

The problem with most hybrid cars today is that they look like hybrids (VERY UGLY) and smug hipsters drive them "mmm I'm doing good to the planet" when in reality the many diesel cars in Europe are even more economical and very clean.

Yeah, that's one issue I've always had with hybrids. Designers feel that since it's new technology, they have to have a balls-to-the-walls crazy designer to match, when in reality, that just deters more drivers than it attracts.

DIESEL ENGINES ARE NOT CLEAN, yes, diesel-engines are more economical, that's right, but the emissions coming out of a diesel engine are far more polluting that you would suspect. Diesel engines emit high levels of NOx and particulate matter (PM10) < 10 microns. Forget dust filters, don't work.

The only reason diesel engines SEEM clean, is because the CO2 emissions are lower (because of better fuel economy).

In the grand scheme of things, you said it (SEEM), diesel IS cleaner because it's a more efficient fuel source, resulting in a higher MPG. If that wasn't the case, then you're whole "derp Diesel is dirty" facts would be troublesome, but it ain't because gasoline is such an inefficient fuel. I think the percentage of fuel actually used for combustion in the engine is rather low.

So it has much more power that's usable effectively once per lap (on the long straight) but carries extra 150 kilos round the whole lap. Wouldn't it lap quicker without the hybrid thingy?

When I first heard about this car I thought this car drives the generator with a belt or something and runs the electric motor at all times, like a supercharger. But I guess not.

By the way I watched the N24 race this year and 997 R Hybrid wasn't the fastest car by far. It was a bit slower than the normal 997 R of Manthey Racing and a few Audi R8s. It didn't lead for 23 hours either as autocar stated. It got into the lead after other cars hit trouble, then led for some hours before braking down too.

If it fully charges on one big brake I suppose you could use short bursts of it all round the circuit.
