how about taking the motor out of the equation have it run large flywheel generator and run 130HP (or more just an idea) motors in each wheel? e.g. 4 cyl awd electric supercar with large capacitor in the truck for boost.
i wouldnt mind driving a hybrid like this if it sounded like this... i think a lot of people are avoiding hybrids today because they detract from a traditional driving experience
the whole hybrid thing? fine by me, just dont touch the 4.0 liter enigine in the back, dont mess with that, otherwise people like me would like to kill a few people :D
I am a fan of the gt3 RS mk 1, that car is for me, the most beautiful and sexy car EVER made.. i could make love to that huge wing on the back..
Marketeers try to convince you that diesel engines are clean, but scientists are well aware of the higher pollution caused by diesel engines. (even despite the better fuel consumption, diesel engines are more polluting)
Besides that, petrol engines aren't inefficient, a modern diesel engine has peak efficiency 35-40%, that's 30-35% for a modern petrol engine. Also don't forget that the energy density (MJ/l) of diesel is higher than that of petrol. (38 > 34) => better volumetric consumption.
but in order to get the charge, you would need to brake, and probably quite hard at that, so you wouldn't have that extra power for highway driving, where the added power would be most fun for overtaking
Finally someone steps up to the plate and makes something that says (we are in the 21st century) why did it take so long to have a car manufacturer to come up with something like this.? Porsche great job! finally the future is here.
@luedriver its all a matter of gain from the performance vs the lose of time bcs of its mass and weight.
last year some teams spent tonnes of money on this technology. especially BMW spent lots of cash. they had much hope on this tech. but they cldnt gain the points they were hoping. this made them sell the team and resign from F1 .
some teams managed to work it. especially mclaren and ferrari worked it well. although they were very happy with the results they didnt use it on certain tracks.
if batteries wont readily take that much power from braking then such a spinner might be interesting for battery electric cars too.
a combustion engine has no place as the prime mover in future cars, only maybe a small niche in endurance racing so that part of this car is not too interesting but the flywheel can work for battery EVs too. formula 1 should do that. go battery swap pure electric plus kers. time to give up that archaic ICE
this is like some strange video game, when you kill an enemy you gain some mana or life points....joke aside i am sold this is the way of the future, the dont say how much the car costs(yes i know its a prototipe) but i bet its scarry
@Bobpulse2345 thats hos f1 is....they create prototypes send them down to gt1 classes gt2 classes for further testing then in the future we get them here on the public. Thats the whole point of these races...its manufacture technology testing.
What you said IS TRUE!!! but thats the point of F1...every new technology we have on the road was because of them
hmm.. so basically a KERS. Great to see the tech hittin something other than f1 (though they havent put it in, the FIA has been tossin the idea around)
The problem with most hybrid cars today is that they look like hybrids (VERY UGLY) and smug hipsters drive them "mmm I'm doing good to the planet" when in reality the many diesel cars in Europe are even more economical and very clean.
@ZeekyBoogyDoog and in the distant future i think hydrogen will take over may be like the Honda insight or piston driven like those BMW concepts which i like very much cuz they make noise :D
Yeah, that's one issue I've always had with hybrids. Designers feel that since it's new technology, they have to have a balls-to-the-walls crazy designer to match, when in reality, that just deters more drivers than it attracts.
@ZeekyBoogyDoog Obviously you know NOTHING about engineering. DIESEL ENGINES ARE NOT CLEAN, yes, diesel-engines are more economical, that's right, but the emissions coming out of a diesel engine are far more polluting that you would suspect. Diesel engines emit high levels of NOx and particulate matter (PM10) < 10 microns. Forget dust filters, don't work.
The only reason diesel engines SEEM clean, is because the CO2 emissions are lower (because of better fuel economy).
In the grand scheme of things, you said it (SEEM), diesel IS cleaner because it's a more efficient fuel source, resulting in a higher MPG. If that wasn't the case, then you're whole "derp Diesel is dirty" facts would be troublesome, but it ain't because gasoline is such an inefficient fuel. I think the percentage of fuel actually used for combustion in the engine is rather low.
You think scientists didn't think of this one in Europe? Yeah, I forgot, all the geniuses are on youtube.
Agreed my step mom has a prius gets 40 mpg for 35 grand, when my moms has a jetta diesel that gets 75 mpg for 20 grand. not that diesels are fun to drive tho...
@Pgabs123 75 mpg with a jetta diesel in mixed driving as the 40 mpg with the prius? Let me tell you, that this cannot be. I have Diesels and a Prius, i know the very good.
@ZeekyBoogyDoog Problem is that diesel is not suistanable, so it is not the future (far future) although a diesel hybrid is a good transition phase to the likes of using hydrogen technologies and such. Awesome car though!
i was about to steal that guys line and was going to say that its the future! oh well.. this is still mean!! and its a matter of time until the hybrid combo will win something big!
So it has much more power that's usable effectively once per lap (on the long straight) but carries extra 150 kilos round the whole lap. Wouldn't it lap quicker without the hybrid thingy?
@ShizoluckyShizostar That's what I was thinking. Then again it's not gonna use it once per lap, it'd probably use it as many times as it brakes for a corner.
When I first heard about this car I thought this car drives the generator with a belt or something and runs the electric motor at all times, like a supercharger. But I guess not.
@ShizoluckyShizostar That's true, but I don't think Porsche would run a slower car for politics. They still wanna win. It was also the fastest car at the resent 24 hours at Nurburgring.
Winning can be achieved by politics (see diesels at LM24). It al depends on how one writes the rules.

I don't think that is what he was saying, I think he was just saying you have to be careful to use it only when you have plenty of traction and the car is settled enough.
If it fully charges on one big brake I suppose you could use short bursts of it all round the circuit.
@bloodyrome0 ahahahah )) you google it. This model never raced at Le Mans with Hybrid system or without. It did race in Nurburgring 24h and was a bit slower than the normal version of the same car.
