  • Have you ever thought of writing to the editor of the magazine? Perhaps they would even feature your letter.

  • What did tyra banks do on here? --just curious!

  • I don't think they're dissing You Tube vloggers. All they're saying is that there is a lot of info and advice about natural hair on the internet, and knowing your hair type is useful in trying to sort through it all. I know that once I found out my hair type I was a lot less overwhelmed by all the info on You Tube and the internet about natural hair. I love and Essence and all my natural hair YT vloggers.

  • that's not cool for them to do that. instead of trying to look down on bloggers and yt'ers, why not work with us..it's a win/win!

  • Honestly, I prefer seeing actual videos from everyday people without hidden agendas who just share their info and experiences with people like me. One can write an article in a magazine and say whatever with no actual proof, but the videos I watch actually have evidence of the things they say because they are showing me as they are telling me.

  • This was well said! Thank you!

  • Sorry about the mispelled words. Started to write what I wanted to say and forgot to check my spelling.

  • Is Essence even blacked owned any more? Because They never have articles that reflect my needs as a reader that is informative to me. When I went natural there was really no books on info that gave me th info I needed. Besides I need to see people actually using the produxts everyday. Rather than some person jumping on the band wagon for a profit. When something gets or becomes the next big thing they gotta profit frim it. Beside they never realy have anything in Essence anyway about women who

  • I have that issue and I saw that comment too

  • There is more to natural hair than hair types! Even if someone demonstrates a style or gives a tip, people are smart enough to understand that it may turn out differently on their own hair. It's about taking the information and adapting it and finding out what works best for your hair. I'd rather learn from someone with a similar natural hair journey to myself that I can relate to than some big corporation whose agenda is to sell advertising and follow the latest trends

  • I couldn't agree more. There is nothing like watching step by step in my opinion

  • I'm a visual learner who is very early in the natural hair transition and YouTube was my first stop for help! I relied on my mother's help and the salon to get my hair done, Youtube has saved me from frustration and headaches. These videos have given me the confidence I need to try new styles for natural hair because it gives step by step VISUAL instruction. I appreciate the three dimensional view. Sorry Essence but unless you build a hologram (that talks) into your magazine, I am staying put!

  • (continued) I think that Essence saw the attention that natural hair was getting thanks to natural hair vloggers and decided to get in on it. Now, they want to down it???? Hummmm... You are right, sounds a little elitest to me as well

  • Okay, this is my take on this one. When natural hair first began taking the world by storm, the only places that were talking about it and taking it seriously was the users here on youtube. When i 1st went natural in 07, NO magazines or mainstream media were discussing. There was no naturally curly. But soon after, yters started posting videos. YTers made natural hair relevent. NOW, about 2 years ago, essence decided to jump on the band wagon w/ natural hair chat. they are late in the game

  • I hope Essence see this...and maybe they need to get on YouTube and get more sales if they feel YouTube is competition...keep speak the truth Sis :-)

  • I totally understand the issues!

  • I 100% agree with you!~

  • @bkawiseone dude for real? How old are you? who says "eat shit and die"? Get a job, and stop spending the last of your money on fucking Essence! Dumb wanches like you attack ppl with such childish comments. Come back with some more grown up comebacks, and i'll think about wasting my time with you. Try again. :D

  • i've learned more in a couple of months from vloggers like u about healthy black hair care than any of the hair mags including essence. i've had subscriptions to mags like essence in the past & they've never offered the wealth of info that's on yt. techniques i've learned here have not been discussed in the mainstream black media until recently. the only thing u can truly count on from those mags is products adverts that for the most part r no good for our hair! THANX AE! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • Ive never been on either site, but people are most likely to view a video by a person with a great personality and similar hair texture to theirs, WHILE gaining knowledge, than read a forum board. But thats just my opinion. Essences article was pointless.

  • Whatever the case might be, its all up to the individual viewing the video. I do see a lot of times YT'er discussing their hair type, and it should be common sense to the viewer to "not watch the video looking for a similar outcome, simply cause her hair is not similar to mine." Its not that hard. All in all i wouldnt say essence is DISSING youtubers. the whole article is pointless to me, because you can connect with different women about transitioning and learn valuable info on either platform.

  • Bit of a double standard to take ESSENCE to task for not looking at YouTubers the way you want them to and then say you hold ESSENCE to a higher standard because they are a "large corporation". The comment is a quote from a LICENSED STYLIST speaking about her experience with natural clients for the last ten years who like myself have been frustrated when my hair didn't look like the videos because I have a different texture hair than the video maker. That was the point of the comment. Reread it.

  • oops, I accidentally posted my reply to you to another reply to someone else. I re-did it for you

  • I've learned alot of valuable information about natural hair on Youtube. I think these large corporations are just trying to "cash in" on the huge interest that African American women now have in their natural hair. I do not use magazines to get my information and will continue to use Youtube and other internet websites. And I am truly grateful to you and the many others who take the time and effort to pass your knowledge on to us. Thanks again!!

  • Let's not also forget the fan pages and groups on Facebook that have created communities for us naturalistas to come together, to share and receive tips, and learn about different products. So honestly, like a couple of people have already said, if I need natural hair advice, the last thing I would think to do would be to refer to Essence. They're just trying to get a piece of that natural community to boost readership. It's a publicity thing. Nothing more.

  • Shoot, youtube is a great resource for a lot of things. Not only did I learn how to do different deep conditioning treatments on my hair from Youtube, I've learned makeup techniques, how to make coconut milk amongst a host of other things. If I need to know how to do something and need a visual, I go to Youtube. I do think it's unfair that these women were not mentioned. It's the natural beauties like you that have helped me learn about being natural before I actually went natural.

  • I stopped reading Essence. I believe they impact the black community in a negative way and cause division between black: men and women regarding relationships and the black community as a whole. I believe they should have been supporting the natural black hair community a long time ago. Now the corporation realize they are real late and are trying to diminish the value of black women on Youtube who share valuable information about natural and relaxe hair, wigs, hair color, make up, fashion, etc.

  • your are the proof that your natural hair methods work bc I saw how long and healthy your hair is...essence is wrong for slamming youtube video

  • Speaking of hair i have a question can u please inbox the answer. i asked another person a question not long ago and can not find it anymore.Ok so here it is. zmy boyfriend has a problem wit breakage mainly in the middle of his head as well as heavy flakage around the edges. What products and procedures do u recommend to eliminate flaking and promote growth. Please help. Im natural but seems like nothing works for him.

  • They say youtubers aren't valid sources for hair care but WHERE WERE THEY we were going natural & needed advice... TOO BUSY ADVERTISING BOX PERMS! Everybody's hair isn't the same, Essence was right about that, but even if me and @africanexport didn't have the same hair texture I could still learn styles & tips from her! Don't get me wrong I'm all about a dollar too... But unlike some of these "black businesses" that have been turned out, I'm just not the type to knock another nigga's to do so.

  • Essence needs to %*ck off..... when I went natural Essence did not have any useful info for me. It was Nappturality and natural head (like you) and relaxed head youtube vids that gave me info to help my hair health. How dare Essence climb on the bandwagon and diss others to put money in their pockets.

  • i like youtube way better than forums. youtube is something i can see! you can talk/type until pigs fly. its not as good as visual assistance. and so much more effort goes into the videos you women make to help others.

  • well said!!!

  • I love essence magazine but whenever they write about natural hair or say anything about natural hair i disregard it because I don't feel it is accurate or current they are LATE!! when it comes to natural hair step aside

  • @bkawiseone ok well u continue readin that BS n leave tha extra comments out. Kk? :P have a nice day!

  • i did read that issue and even before that particular issue, i had decided not to subscribe to them anymore. i am especially amazed and inspired by those people on youtube, who sacrifice their time and energy to put their talents out there at no cost- and a lot of the advice i received, especially regarding natural hair care, is on point.

  • If you were offended by that comment, you're just a sensitive ass MF... It wasn't a diss... It's the truth... Yes YouTube is helpful, but everything on YouTube is not trustworthy... And the statement never said Don't Go On YouTube... Chill, it ain't that deep...

  • @bkawiseone and neither is naturally curly and every other beauty website on the internet

  • Well said. You tube has inspired and keep me motivated in both my natural journey and loc journey. Not Essence.

  • I speculate they did that bc about 2 yrs vloggers called Essence out on their advise to wash with a stripping SHAMPOO on a regular basis (3-5/week).... it was a big mess

  • Sometimes I feel there may be one too many natural videos on YouTube, however, each one of them is different in their own way. I recently stumbled on another YouTuber and discovered a style that I haven't seen anyone else do yet. There are some tutorials that one YouTuber will do that another one won't do.

And where does Essence have VIDEOS to show styles? I've yet to see any.

  • When it comes down to it, its all about that might dollar. Essence is trying its best to hold onto a diminishing customer base because so many people are going natural and not using mainstream products/services/magazines to do it. I would take it as a compliment. :-)

  • Essence is in DENIAL. Multimedia is the way people want information these days. People will look at a video review before purchasing a magazine. After all we are all busy people and time is of the essence in our lives. Especially for those of us not residents of USA. Dont be discouraged ya'll.

  • Chile please! We will shut Essence down!

  • AMEN TO ALLLLLLLL THAT YOU SAID! WOW.

  • If it wasn't for you, and the other naturals on YouTube, I would still be addicted to the creamy crack!! Your channel was the #1 reason I started my YouTube natural hair quest.

  • Many bloggers have been in the game for several years before Essence was even thinking about natural hair. Bloggers put in slot of hard work and it is much appreciated. Plus we get virtual hugs...Essence doesn't do that ;-)

  • Essence is behind the times and a bit disconnected, in my opinion. They are still very much tied to the late '90's and early 2000's view of Black women. I wish the natural hair community would come together to make their own magazine and/or printed media - THAT would be amazing!

  • I pay no mind to Essence. There isn't a thing that they advertised that I was interested in. Idk why they are upset with YouTube videos *showing* us how to take care of our natural hair and how to style it. Anyways, what is this Tyra comment that AE is talking about?

  • LOOOOW not to mention cheesy blow! I have learned so much from my sisters on youtube. I have received nothing but good and honest info and it was free. Essence should be embarrassed, hell I'm embarrassed. Booooo

  • To be honest... I stopped subscribing to Essence a while ago, it's not the same magazine I read as a kid. Besides that, Essence is the LAST place I'd go to for NATURAL hair advice. When the natural hair movement started Essence was still ignoring the natural state of it's readers, they weren't there when the movement started. In fact they ignored it for quite some time. Why should I trust their advice now?

Thank you and the many others for the work you do, the video views speak VOLUMES!

  • Im feeling you on this Essence comment. Im new to the natural world and i must say. Just by reading books wont help, but actually seeing you show how to do things to protect and help the hair is really helpful. I only have one video because I watch your videos so much that I dont need to make any. Your very helpful and real. Keep up the WONDERFUL work and be blessed¡

  • if i could give you 5/5 stars, 10,000 checkmarks and 1 million thumbs up i would....i definitely appreciate your point-of-view as always and your ability to see through the bs. but to be honest, you had me at the U.N.I.T.Y reference..immediate thumbs up = ) keep up the good work you do!!!

  • regardless of what anybody, corporation, company, etc. say, i appreciate all the videos related to natural hair, tutuorials or whatever here on the yt. So for anyone who prefers other than youtube let them seek out other than youtube. ME, i'm gonna continue watching youtube vids, reading blogs, magazines whatever. and the way i see it is if you yt natural hair gurus weren't doing something right, essence would have no need to mention u ;-) u kno what i mean. so keep doing whatcha doin! thanks.

  • What they said is no different than a doctor telling a patient to stop using the internet to diagnose their illness. In college, I was told to not use Wikipedia; instead use the library resources. I trust that these professionals knew enough about the subject; therefore, I did not find their discouragement to be "dissing" at all. After all, people put a lot of crap on the internet. All natural hair vloggers are not the same. You are awesome though... ;)

  • @strawberriesandmocha unfortunately Essence does not fit the bill, they are not the "professionals" in all of my years, and I have many lol, essence have never provided me with as much info as the women on youtube

  • @yinka321 For natural hair care, I have learned a lot from hair care forums and youtube. Essence may not fit the bill for you, but that magazine has hit the bill for many. They are in the position where they are for a reason. The magazine is a trusted brand.

  • @strawberriesandmocha I completly agree a lot of youtube vloggers will say something and put them as facts and people who are influentiable will take it to be the gospel. On a forum things are slightly different because you are able to read about the good and the bad experiences. Not all vloggers give real information or encourage people to learn about THEIR hair.

  • YT gave me the tools to look after my hair. There are so many women women on here with different textured hair and i think that everyone is represented. Whenever I've seen an article on natural hair in Essence it has been uninspiring and with little information. YT vloggers have made a huge impact in the natural community and naturals who use these channels recognise this. I think that all that matters in the end is that your subscribers recognise how hard you work and we do. Thank you AE!

  • I call Bullshit on Essence and the writer of that article on that note! That's some hating if I ever heard any. But I'm not going to stop ready, but the editor should have pause/break that particular comment.

  • I stopped reading that magazine a long time ago. If it was not for the sisters, posting vids on natural hair, make up, jewelry it help me with my own journey, especially my natural journey. Essence should know that everyone take in information through different "modes" so dont put everyone in the same box. We learn in so may different ways and tailor the info to our needs. these vid blogs are free, the magazine is not. Is Essence willing to provide free mags so that "all" can access their info?

  • i don't necessarily think that they were coming at youtube natural hair vloggers. i think that they were coming at the ones who give misinformation and promoting their community in the process. It is all about business. They only intended to increase the traffic coming to their sites.

  • cont....listen Sisters....continue yourVlogging ...you have their attention. I would worry if you didnt...They know you have an audience...and they cant stand it ...I also have subscribed to Naturally Curly .com..helpful but not all inclusivr for certain. luv ya AE..the realist channel on the YT.

  • Let me just say..if you are wearing your hair in its natural state..believe me you know who is natural and who is not. I watch YT and read Essence Magazine ..and I will be picking up this issue for sure...My transitional period to natural hair was SUCCCESSFUL!!! I repeat SUCCESSFUL ... as I watched tons of YT videos of my fellow sisters as they transitioned to their natural hair ...and how they cared for their natural hair. All the Vloggers were greatly appreciated.

  • I love my YT vloggers! YT vids give more real time info. Black women and our hair, c'mon, we are always seeking more info, more inspiration, more interaction, especially when it comes to natural hair care! A couple of years ago, after being natural for over 12 years, I had considered relaxing again but it was the YT Queens that inspired me to change my mind and I have not re-considered the creamy crack since. BTW AE luv ur channel but when are you gonna put out a new song for us to download? :-)

  • when I went natural I didn't go on essence.com or pick up an essence magazine I video searched Youtube...And I appreciate the vloggers. Your videos have been helpful and continue to motivate me through my journey. Essence should have done a paragraph about the positive effects Youtube vloggers have on the natural community and not throw shade. I would have expected a little bit more support from essence magazine. I guess in the end its all about the C.R.E.A.M.

  • My transition to natural hair was easy thanks to you awesome ladies on the YT! Lovin my hair and Lovin your vids. Keep up the good work!

  • When we look at the owners of Essence magazine, this makes sense!!!

  • ESSENCE mentions a natural hair product once in a while...while trying to sell it to you....their natural hair articles never really takes up 2 solid pages....and its always shallow information. by some celebrity somebody who isnt there to show you tutorials, reviews or answer questions....instead WE ARE BOMBARDED by adds to buy what ever crap that paid for an advertising space in the magazine

  • i have subbed to ESSENCE magazine since 19-0-long and their info has never been as substantial to me as YOUTUBE & BLOGS i was natural for about 8 years but never learned to manage my hair (while reading ESSENCE) until i discovered the natural hair community on youtube which led me to natural hair blogs....With the knowledge i garnered from those sites(AND FROM DIFFERENT TEXTURED WOMEN) i consider myself very capable of managing my mane

  • YouTube videos changed my life because it validated wearing my natural hair and gave me tools that helped me take care of my hair. Essence didn't. YouTube did. I will continue to go to YouTube - not Essence. Thank you to the talented, skilled, honest and passionate about natural hair leaders on YouTube!!

  • @savsecmom I totally agree..YouTube is my 1st GoTO...Essence is fueled by its Advertisers..YouTube Independents are for REAL and doing it for the better good of all!♥

  • Essence is being more than a little hypocritical, because they openly feature independent fashion bloggers AND people on the street for their fashion section....How is natural hair so different from clothing when it comes to self expression????

  • Don't worry, baby sis, we ain't going NOWHERE. You got us hooked, AE! I won't be surprised if they steal YOU away from us. And I still won't be mad at cha.

  • Yes!!

  • ok, everyone is free to do what they want to do. essence mag doesnt have the right to tell us naturals what to do as far as where they get there info. As i see it, they are only saying that because their mag sales must be down. Everyone who is natural has to decide for themselves and not listen to propaganda from the media. the choice is ours and i'm going to keep watching my yt vloggers, because i continue to love the info and entertainment i get from it.

  • First, I just want to say that I appreciate all of the YT vloggers efforts. I didn't get the January issue yet so I haven't read the entire article. But based on the excerpt you showed it seems they were taking a dig at YTers. However I do see the point they were trying to make especially with regard to being careful watching someone who has a different hair texture. I have yet to find someone with texture like mine as I have several going on myself. lol

  • What the heck Essence? What happened to supporting and empowering black women? They hardly ever show or feature women with natural hair, so how can they claim to be the gurus now? And dissing those who took it upon themselves to fill in the gaps that they overlooked? C'mon now. Thank you AE and fellow natural hair bloggers for doing what should have been done a long time ago.

  • Comment removed

  • I just love how the natural community is so strong right now. Like everyone is backing our vloggers. :)

  • @BeautifulEHuman While I agree that this wasn't necessarily a diss to yt vloggers, the part that seems sketchy is the 'Come to our websites instead' plug. While I have heard other vloggers give this same warning to be careful what to watch on youtube, I have never heard not one say, 'Be careful and watch my channel instead'. Not one. The motive behind Essence's warning just doesn't seem sincere and that's where my issue lies.

  • @IwanAcleverUtubeName Fair enough: But many YT Vlogger's do the same: "Please subscribe for more **insert so called expertise here**. This is the same as "watch my channel instead. Everyone (ESSENCE, Vloggers, websites) are all promoting themselves: That's what YT is here for: your own personal soapbox. ESSENCE never said "don't look at YT".. it said to "be careful" and "here's a list of professionals I vouch for". That's the same as VLOGGERS review vids: here's the products I like..

  • @BeautifulEHuman That's true, I suppose I didn't see it that way.

  • Comment removed

  • but what do you expect now that a white person owns it now you see the typical representative of a black women light skin curly/straight hair in most of the mags ads standing next to a white women and about 4 dark skin women with straight hair through out it and 3 naturals if your lucky

  • Oh, and Essence is owned by Time Warner for those who may not know

  • And Chrisette Michelle and other stylists and it was TERRIBLE. It lacked focus and the "experts" were primarily conversing with one another. Essence should have recognized the YT vloggers efforts, like the NY Times and Huffington Post did, instead of "hating" on i becuase they have lost that audience. Keep doing you!

  • Essence "natural" hair community that they are promoting is NOTHING like what you and others do on YT. Essence missed the bandwagon and now want a piece of the natural hair pie. Hopefully they don't think they are entitiled because they "represent" Black women. They had a chat about natural hair w/Tippi shorter

  • Many businesses are feeling some sort of way about everyday people receiving recognition or those that have a large following of supporters regarding something that's has sparked the airwaves. I didn't know about this until I seen this video. But I agree with what you said. They don't need to throw shade. Smh.

  • essence just wanna sell mags thats why they want you to go to their website..bottom line

  • Im loving the new orginal music at the end!

  • Youtube's a great resource for natural hair. The posts aren't redundant at all: those who take the time to post tutorials/reviews each offer a unique perspective. They have value simply because they’re made within the spirit of sharing and sisterhood. There’s a need for some companies to devise a one-size fits all template for our hair care. Essence doesn't have the resources to address ALL of our haircare needs. They know they’re at a disadvantage to the info offered by vloggers/bloggers.

  • I am old enuff to have gone natural way back in the day, and am somewhat amused by the kerfuffle 'bout our hair. I agree with Baruch1girl Essence lost the spiritual center with the exit of Susan Taylor. I blame part of it on not carrying the pride of the generation of sisters like Abbey Lincoln, Angela Davis and others like them forward(who were wearing natural hair long b4 others found it either fashionable or political). Black is still beautiful and always will be in all manifestations!

  • I am a subscriber...so im not a random stopper-by commenting. I think Essence is telling readers dont listen to YouTubers who are not knowledgeable about natural hair and there are a few out there! Its hit or miss for a lot of people and that's okay-YouTube is not evidence-based it's trial and error, its personalized, it's opinion driven. Sometimes it's endorsement driven. I dont think they were downing all natural hair vlogges but if the shoe fits wear it if not relax and keep doing your thing.

  • Essence got it wrong...we are intelligent enough to recognize a hair type that is different from our own o_O ..i look forward to the YT videos to learn new things, and when something didn't work out, see how someone else remedied the situation...I am a follower of @CurlyNikki site, but I regularly follow many other sisters on a regular basis...Essence you are not the boss of me...Keep on posting @africanexport @coilyheadchick @mrshairtody @dawnyelle @missentf i'll be watching...so there!

  • To be honest, I think that the writer of this article needs to take a step back and really look at what they have written! Yes, YouTubers are speaking about their textures but if you look at the video and their hair doesn't look like yours then you know to move on. I look at YouTube because there are people that test products that I may want to try or have heard of, and they will give you their honest opinion about them. YouTubers shouldn't be bashed because they help a lot of people!

  • Essence has the right to print the madness but I don't have to believe it...I think for myself. I question most everything...

  • Comment removed

  • so many of us have learned SO MUCH from natural hair vloggers. they were giving natural hair advice WAY before essence!! essence gives 2 or 3 perspectives on hair, while on youtube you get a HUGE variety of perspectives. no one, not essence nor any one vlogger can tell you about how your hair will behave. only you can figure that out. I think the motives of that statement were to promote essence's website more than anything.

  • i think it was WHACK for Essence to try to diss YT gurus..b/c when i first went natural all info i found that was actually helpful was found on the internet..smh

  • Stand up, hold your head high!! It's something to be said for Essence to even acknowledge all of our natural hair youtubers & vloggers! It's a compliment in it's self...Take it as that. Think about it this way: Take what initially feels like a negative jab & make it into everything positive. I feel that because of the mention in the magazine, there could only be new subscribers thirsting for more & more information & knowledge that ESSENCE just CAN'T DELIVER! I love all of MY YOUTUBE GURUS!

  • I don't use every bit of information that I hear regardless of where it came from. However, I have to say, Youtube has been one of the most helpful and supportive resources for me in my natural hair journey. And it's more than just information. I appreciate seeing the journeys of others too. There is a sense of togetherness on Youtube and I value that. It's a shame that some people still don't realize all the benefits of this site.

  • How many people still read Essence Magazine?Lets be real Essence Magazines are hard to find.

  • I haven't read essence magazine for yrs, I look to youtuber's when I want to learn about black hair

  • keep up the good work my beautiful sister, and know that I won't budge from youtube because of some crazy comments made by Essence or whatever.lol

  • Youtube has help me so muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, when it comes to my natural hair journey, and care. That's sad to know this crap is coming from Essence.

  • Essence cannot be compared to Natural Hair Vloggers simply because the Vloggers are in a class of their own. If I want natural hair information or style suggestions, I come to Youtube. If I want to read about random black media information, I read Essence. Who is really reading Essence for hair care tips? Not me...

  • Money Money money.... Essence is losing money as well as hair companies and hair stylist. They want us to spend money to them to tell us how our hair is. We just found a better way of communicating that they haven't thought of. Now trying to take it as theirs is so laughable. I can understand that they do need money but we have just found better way to take care of our hair. If not for youtubers shea butter wouldn't be in half the products that they are trying to shove in our face now. lol

  • Essence is just trying to promote their own business thats why! They see people more interested in youtubers, instead of promoting all positive things and collaborating with youtubers, they're like crabs, not satisfied until they bring someone down just to get to the top,KEEP DOING YA THING GIRL! they can give all the generalized tips but its really up to that individual preference at the end of the day, youtube provides an opportunity to see all different textures and how each person handles hair

  • Because of you I learned to love my natural hair.

  • Honestly if it was not for you and other youtubers, I would have permed my hair by now.

  • I went natural in 2007 using what I had used when I had a perm. I just discovered the You-tube vloggers in the last year. They have really helped me with product ideas.

  • i think this signifies that the natural hair movement on youtube is a becoming a force. If essence magazine felt the need to compare themselves to the YT community I think all the naturals doing videos should take it as a compliment and continue doing what they are doing. this is typical behavior for rival companies in any industry

  • When I started my journey i crashed my computer searching for sites that focused on natural hair. I went to a site that just crashed everything. I was Essence subcriber at the time and I bought hair care mags on the regular. At that time there was very little in these magazines that focused on natural hair care. I would fine a few articles here and there but mostly about how to style the hair not how to care for it. I needed to know what products were best for my hair.

  • sorry for the typos, I was typing fast, but you get what I'm saying! LOL

  • This is funny. When I began my natural hair journey and began asking people for tips, not once did someone tell, "log onto essence.com for excellent tips." No, every single one of my friends go on YouTube. True, not every single video is informative, but they majority of the videos I have watched have been helpful because these are women that look like me, sound like, understand my budget in regards to products and genuinely want to help me, not make money off of me.

  • And where the hell was Essence when the movement started???This was a grassroots movement. It sarted by sisters and grew from sister to sister using media like youtube! By the time Essence caught on the movement had BEEN taken off. They only stoped to notice when it went viral Before that they wasn't even trying to hear nothing 'bout no natural hair okay! All they could advertise was wigs weaves and relaxers. Now they wanna act like they're our salvation?Coopt the movement we started? Dont think so!

  • Sorry for the delay just caught this upload. Remember me telling you a couple months ago you have replaced my essence. We really don't need them and they know it. They are scared!! A huge chunk of their ad set up is, we all know RELAXERS, among other crazy hair stuff that we no longer use. Bah ha ha ha that all equals less cash for them. We will continue to support you and the natural hair community on YouTube. Ya'll helped us when we needed it most. THANK YOU and you gave it to us free :))))))

  • I definitely don't look to essence.com for natural hair tips because it seems like they only focus on transitioning and women with looser curls. I never see hair styles that reflect women who look like me or have a hair texture like me. So on that note, I will continue to watch my yt fam every chance I get which is all the time!! Peace and blessings

  • If essence tried to come on the yt I believe it would be a tyra banks epic fail LOL anywho AE my son loves your videos he is 2 months old and everytime I watch your vids he looks and even smiles.

  • OMG Essence, maybe you need some visibility on You Tube.

  • I agree with everyone else; everything I know about my hair I learnt from youtube and seeing as in the UK they charge a premium for "black" hair magazines such as essence, youtube is and will remain a fantastic resource for people with natural hair textures. I refuse to pay money for what most of the time is crap, generic information lacking details that only serve the purpose of suggesting expensive products I can't afford. AE I love you; keep doing what you do :-) xxxxx

  • I've only been natural since June and everything I know, I learned from youtube...NOT ESSENCE. Keep it moving ladies and keep up the good work! You're inspiring all of us out here:)

  • I applaud you guys for coming of raw and doing makeup and hair videos...by the time essence has a cover on and their person of choice is made up..airbrushed prime and proper lol...we dont know what or how these people really look on the before and after...Essenes is a corporation which is in the business of making money but I love that you said the part of not being literate.....affordability etc.....keep up the good work with your funny talented ass ..lolol

  • Essence is overrated.......they cater to a certain "black" woman and its sad because we learn more from the average woman on YT discussing natural black hair than a small article written weekly or monthly....they're not showing the details like you guys do regarding different methods or products we as black sisters can use. Granted, everyone has to find their niche and what works for their hair but essence can sit it down. They're pissed because their monies arent the same thanks to YT. KUDOS

  • Wow, It really just shows how threatened Essence feels by the natural vlog community. There is enough cyberspace for many entities to provide us with useful information.Trying to steer people toward only one source is always suspect. It doesn't make you look good by trying to make these wonderful vloggers look bad, it's tacky. I'm very thankful to AE and others like her for the time and info they share with us. Satin caps and cashmerenapps to you sis, keep up the excellent work. ~Peace

  • I feel Essence cud be concerned that YT will stop or slow the magazines cash flow...i have found ALOT of useful info here on YT...basically for free...as to where i wud of had to pay $5.99 for Essence to tell me not to entertain the YT and go to the mags website....i enjoy the "LIVE" education i receive on natural hair...

  • Give it up 4 da streetz!!!!!

  • Where was Essence when I was looking for natural hair tips?

not there, Yt helped me to understand how to take care not Essence

  • I honestly think this is the same old story of the old "big business" media model not understanding the newest, hottest forms of media-- it is like the record companies before itunes- they don't understand how to monetize what is going on with youtube, so therefore it is bad.

  • Well, youtube is the only info that helped me during my transition. STILL helps me. naturalcurly site (and im gonna be honest) bored the hell out of me. So youtube natural hair bloggers keep it coming. ;-)

  • Just tell me where I need to go so I can vote for you to become President, all right?! Just TELL ME, DAMNIT!LOL Cuz, you SO got my vote and this is from a woman who's been a "relaxed chick" since the age of 12!! I just love your Debate and Discuss videos!! Love them to death!! :)

  • No words because Essence has showed out. Like Vivalicious said, "they are late to the party!" If it wasn't for AE, Taryn 916, and others my soft curly triple textured 3c/4a and in some places 2c (weird, lol!) hair would not have grown almost to my bra strap without them. They give love because they seemed to not have had no monetary motivation to those otherwise who would not have had help. That's some stuff man...

  • Hey why does this video have 302 views and 805 likes/428 comments.....essence is this your doing...hmmm

  • BOO FOR ESSENCE THEY R HATING ON UTUBE, TAKING ALL THEIR READERS GET OVER IT. LAST TIME I CHECKED ESSENCE WAS A BLACK MAGAZINE!!! GIVE PROPS TO WHERE THEY R DUE!! STOP HATING!!!!!!!!

  • Screw Essence. I gave up on them years ago, rock on Girl! Keep it pushn'! Just a bunch a haters!

  • I totally agree with you on this; maybe Essence needs to get a little more "STREET," because lately they have been a little off with their articles. Thanks for the information! Oh and HUGS!!!

  • This might be a set up on Essence part they probably said that so Youtube guru will talk about it and their subscribers will go and buy the magazine so they can read it their self. I'm just assuming. lol

  • So not on the discussion- but I ♥ the hugs in the end! I caught myself leaning in a couple....

  • You are such an eloquent and profound speaker. You spoke from the depths of your heart. Thanks for speaking up!

  • I don't think this is a diss as they pointed out that some ladies may not have your same hair type. However, like you said what they did do was pump themselves up, just trifling. What they should have said was see the ladies who textures are like yours for best advice if you use the five and you can "also" check out these web sites. Hopefully they hear you on this and correct themselves. I complained to them about that expensive ass diva on a dime with others and I've been seeing a change.

  • While I do agree with you AE, Essence's article does have a point - a lot of natural hair vloggers have the looser 4a hair type, and while we can learn from vloggers with different hair types (as we all have been!), there is not enough 4c - 4x vloggers with regular/frequent and QUALITY youtube video channels; so while those with textures similar to yours, Taren's, Kimmytubes, Naptural85's, etc. get expert advice on products and styling, us 4c girls are left to greater trial and error.

  • @chi456100 speak.

  • This is messed up on Essence part but CurlyNikki will put tips in Essence for natural hair, so maybe Essence is trying to get folks to buy their magazine because of CurlyNikki.

  • I did not actually read the article (I live in France) but the excerpt you showed shows IMO that Essence Magazine is actually insulting its readership and/or those that turn to YT for tips and advice. We're clever enough to KNOW when we watch people in the videos when their hair type is similar to ours. Plus we look at some for inspiration, others for fun, and on top of that some often issue disclaimers saying what worked for them might not necessarily work for the viewers. Not clever EM...

  • Essence features youtubers on their website so what Martin is saying in the article doesn't make any sense. but then again they never mention these people being from YouTube. Yeah, it's pure shade.

  • I rather go on you tube than essence. A website like essence is so impersonal. I rather watch people i relate to OR who have similar hair too. They are just trying to get in where they dont fit in

  • Their just mad that YT has become a free educational school for alot of things like natural hair. And we have developed a loving and sharing community where we don't have have to pay $4-6 dollars on the lame advice given in a magazine. They should be supporting their own but its obvious that their intimidate by the success of each person who has contributed to helping someone develop healthy hair habits. I went natural because my hair was damage and because i found support on here.

  • Essence magazine chose the wrong people to diss because I've learned more about hair care on youtube than that magazine .... they do not teach anything relevant to me.

  • I kinda agreed with the article.

  • ...don't read that s*it anyways! Essence fakes like they support the Black Community. They only do if there is a paycheck in it for them. Boo hiss!

  • Essence needs to stick with what they do well - magazines. Leave the tutorials for natural hair to those who have nothing to gain by doing so. Yes, I have my youtube natural hair expertise diploma from watching hundreds of natural hair videos. :) Essence could learn a thing or two from the videos on the YT!

  • Yep! Essence is owned by Time Warner. I trust my You Tube Sistren more than the corporate machine.

  • WTF? Isn't Essence Magazine owned by a Lily White Publishing House Company?! Enough said, Girl please. They only want to try to influence us Black women to buy products on what they are marketing for their business friends!
