My Exterra ig decent to drive but a pig on fuel. My other machines are VW Diesel Jetta, Golf and a Dodge PU With the Cummons Diesel. All get acceptable To Great fuel economy. The Exterra is an acceptable 4X4 when compared to my old Land Rovers, Jeeps, Land Cruisers and Toyota Pick Ups. I had a Suburban and a Ford Pick up 3/4 ton.4X4. They knew what to do with a gallon of gas too . I find the Exterra fine but it is what it is.

I have a 2001 4WD model and it might be what you refer to as better vehicles if your destination is accessable by paved roads but my Xterra lives up to whatever challenge I put it up too. The height clearance and the strong build of the vehicle makes me feel safer than driving some wimp vehicle, I will gladly sacrifice some gas mileage to keep my family safer on the road.

I have one and its really not that bad on road. Maybe a little bit bumpy but everything else like steering, accelleration and braking is great for the city unlike my chevy blazer.

I own an 06 xterra s 4x4. I feel like I can drive it anywhere, long trips are great, off road it's unstoppable, and it's NOT too boxy! I think it blows away the first gen in looks! First gen looks tiny compared to this model. And the ride is not too harsh, unless your a mary.

I love the Xterra commercials "Everything you want, nothing you don't want" .They have a rugged, back to basics look. It's great to see a solid reliable SUV that doesn't have all the juk on it that overloads some of the more costly ones. I like the stiffer suspension, the straight rear axle, and the mid-size SUV that is more truck-like than car-like. I felt cramped in the Armada, 4Runner, and Highlander, but the Xterra fit just right!

i just bought a 2008 X and i love love love it! previously i had an 03 pathfinder, and i find the X drives 10 times more smooth, and it is way faster.

I love both vehicles believe me, but Actually the 08 pathfinders are much more civilized and nicer to drive compared to the bare xterras.And in terms of speed, the xterra is a slight notch less in power some where in the reange of 9 hp and about 8lb/tf torque. but it might be faster cos it lighter.Ive got a 08 pathfinder and that packs a punch!!

The only major difference between the OFF ROAD and all the other models is the Locking Rear Differential which you will only use if you do alot of rock crawling and expect to have one of your rear tires in the air. The factory skid plates are more of a safety blanket than an actual armor, they easily get trashed by light to medium obstacles. If you want a real armor plates, go shrockworks.
