Please consider, I totally agree that nukes are bad, but what if something out of the blue happened? For example something like an actual alien invasion, ICBM's would be handy to take out their ships in the atmosphere. Or a meteor or large object was going to collide with earth, we would be able to destroy it. Even if humanity survived an actual nuclear war there would be a "nuclear winter", aka if enough atom bombs go off it would send so much debris into the atmosphere that it would blanket the earth causing the sun to be blocked out... Freezing everything, much like the effects of the ice age that killed off the dinosaurs. Well, the good news about the threat of nukes, is that the only real threat to the WORLD is from missiles, and anti-ballistic missile technologies are long underway, at least where the US is concerned. If these defensive networks proved effective en-mass, it would essentially mean ballistic missiles were obsolete.

Now of course, that still leaves bombers and smuggled bombs, but in relative terms, that's infinitely smaller in the worst case scenario than a full all-silo all-sides launch.

I'm almost certain a major nuclear war WILL happen at some point. It may be 300 years from now, or even longer, but eventually there will be a new clash of superpowers, leading to total war.

So lets rewind to the end of WWII. The Allies want to end the war, Germany is developing their own nukes, as is Japan. Germany gets taken out. We have the nuke. Two choices. One: Invade Japan, 0.5 Million US soldiers dead, plus the entire Japanese military and most civilians because they would commit suicide rather than die.
