It would be nice to see these theaters restored. Birmingham, AL has restored the Alabama and Lyric theaters in downtown and they have become part of a renaissance of culture in Birmingham. Perhaps the people of Bridgeport, CT would be so moved to follow the example of their Southern neighbors. I know the foundations that helped save those two theaters would be glad to help get a similar organization started.
@JPSousa1898 Could you please send the contact information for these Foundations to me. I am currently organizing grass roots support through our organization (Jazz Guild of Fairfield County) to initiate a proposal to restore these incredible venues. eugenealeone@aol.com
So sad. The craftsmanship and detail that are so apparent are impossible to replicate today. Simply doesn't exist anymore. Yet, we just throw it away.
what breaks my heart is that this is in my hometown, its gorgeous and no one will ever see it. Every now and again I hear some asshole teenager say fuck bridgeport, it wasnt always this way.. the way it is now, but I still love it :/
I love your Video, I love the Old Theatres, I have been working on some local theatre videos I have uploaded 3 onto YouTube so far. Most of the theatres are totally in ruins or demolished. I took lots of photos about 30 years ago and I have made elaborate slide shows out of them. Not as good as real video though.
Wow, so amazing how so much work and architecture can be glorified at one time and abandoned the next! BTW, have to ask, is that Explosions in the Sky playing in the background?
thanks for posting this. it saddens me that these theaters are just being left to crumble into dust. in any other place they would be treasures. very sad.
the majestic has not been vacant for decades and neither has the palace. Phantom Of The Opera has been on broadway for over 20 years and is still playing there today. Priscilla is playing at the palace. West Side Story just did a run there in 2010. Legally Blonde the musical was just there back in 2008! I saw it there! It was my very 1st show! So how could both the majestic and the palace have been vacant for decades?
In Europe old buildings like this are maintained and in use for centuries. It is sad to see this beautiful theatre just abandoned and left to ruin. We have become a society that puts more value on multiplex big box theatres rather than preserving an architectural gem like this. (Yes, I know, it's all about making money.)
There must had been a pipe organ at one time, from looking at the organ pipe on te walls? Wonder if it is still there or had been removed? For these old movie theater, it cost much money to take care of an old building, as financially would be better to tear it down abd also a safety risk too.
I went to this theater when I was a kid, it was so beautiful. It is so sad to see this video and the way the theater is today. I wish I had the money to bring it back to all its beauty and glory
I use to go there when I was a kid, so sad that this historical theater has ended up like this. I wish I had the money to bring it back to its beauty and glory. So sad to see this.
I use to go there when I was a kid, so sad that this historical theater has ended up like this. I wish I had the money to bring it back to its beauty and glory.
Awesome, majestic, amazing, incredible... It would be a dream for me to explore it. The best and most beautiful abandoned theater that i´ve never seen.
You serious?! We have this in our very own back yard and it's rotting?! These theaters are literally frozen in time. Too bad BPT. has some ungrateful people livin' here who won't even know how to appreciate something like this. It's sad because I love history and If I had an opportunity to go back in time, it would definitely be during BPT's birth. "I love histyory and BPT. is a treasure trove of it."
The complex can be saved if the city made the effort to save and restore it.
The city has had a long history of corruption and greed of few people who have prevented any serious developement and appreciation of land mark building in the city. The restored Bijou theater complex, the Arcade on Main St. and the City Trust Building on Main St. Demonstrate that great classic building can be productive again. B.p.t. needs honest and creative thinkers Adm. to lead the city to Save 2 Theaters
this is both sad and scary, this place was once alive and majestic like it's name but everything eventually has to die right? i wish that people would of cared enough to save this beautiful piece of history.
this is a beautiful movie palace, considering how much neglected over the years it beams opulance from it's era surely worth saving, COME ON AMERICA SAVE YOUR HERITAGE WHILE YOU STILL CAN , i live in the uk and will probably never see this wonderful building, but to see it 'second hand' is great on utube, wont someone in the US of A help please.
@swingsc The place were it is located has high crime and very low income residents. The residents who live in Bridgeport have a very nasty ghetto New York style attitude.
I don't think this video works to give you the true impression of how vast these images are on a compositional level. Never the less, what shame to see such a beautiful structure left behind. It seems like such a marvelous place.
We can't maintain or create anything that is beautiful in this country anymore. America is quickly becoming the most generic, boring, bland place on earth. Very sad.
Like the song says "It always seems to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone!" Very sadly, no one with the means to make a difference has been found to rescue these 2 grand old dames from being lost for good. I hope this can still be changed.
This is not the Majectic Thea. It is the Palace Thea. which is next door. The Majestic is narrower and smaller by about a thousand seats and is far more ruined than the Palace. I saw movies at both of these theaters when I was a kid and toured them both extensively with their owner in 1972. They were still running xxx films then and it closed shortly after that. The owner was strapped for cash and sold me a leaded glass exit sign from the Palace. I still have it.
This happened because we allwed it to happen. People thought that places like Showcase and Hoyts were better newer places...offered more...how soon we as a species begin to miss the past
how did we allow all this beauty and grandeur to be replaced with the micro screen multi-plexes? no style, class or warmth, and you cant even get real butter on your popcorn.....

it was a once prosperous and thriving theater,
thats when the surrounding areas were filled with white people.
but im sure it is not because the theater sits in the middle of a ghetto.

Great place for a concerts. But if the surrounding area is low-income and high crime it will never be revived.

The designers of that time period are all gone. Treasure those that have been maintained or restored because in these days nothing is made to last.
