  • ahh, clive burr was really great!!!! better than nicko.

  • Maiden was blessed to have two of the best lead vocalists in the business.

  • san ton petroxeilo einai o dianno xaxaxaxaxaxax

  • heavy metal at the beggining, iron maiden whit paul di anno wowwww

  • Was this the night Bon Scott died?

  • everytime i hear the bass and the drums i sit there waiting to hear "this is a song from the first iron maiden album, a song called running free LET IT RIP!" from the L.A.D version

  • what they cut it short

  • Nooo they totally cut the best part, the last one ;((

  • Free Di'anno!

  • Iron Maiden with their BEST frontman... DiAnno!! Still an excellent band, but personally I think with DiAnno they would've had a bit more DANGER and ATTITUDE......

  • first Top of the pops performance that wasn't using pre-recorded music since 1972

  • How nice. Wonder whatever happened to this band, they just seemed to disappear

  • @chewybaco where u bin they still on go and one of the best rock bands in the world , wake up man

  • @chewybaco What do you mean with that??? they`re still so much alive

  • dianno♕ best singer

  • we come a looong way...

  • I love Paul! He gives the punky touch to the band!

  • di anno in concert was great

  • What the fuck is all the talk about Metallica? Paul DiAnno with Maiden were pure METAL! DiAnno had the ATTITUDE and Harris had the tunes.. (DiAnno also co-wrote the clasic song KILLERS and a couple more..). Remember that 1980 is a CLASSIC year for ROCK/METAL.... Iron Maiden debut album, Motorhead Ace Of Spades, Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell, Ozzy Blizzard Of Oz....... Check out 1980 for Rock/Metal albums... An excellent year!

  • Paul Di'Anno stated on That Metal Show recently that Bon Scott died on the day Maiden appeared on TOTP for the first time and that John Bonham died on the day they appeared for the second time. They said we're not going to do that show anymore.

  • First live concert of TV

  • @LordWindson

    since the Who

  • @mangymetal Yeah!

  • Live at the rainbow 1980!! come on Steve blow some AMP's nice solo Dave and Addrian. Also nice solo Clive!!!

  • this must have been the only live performance on top of the pops in the 80's as the rest were mimed. good on maiden for insisting they played live

  • @PeaveyPV20 I remember watching it on Top of the pops. They started off really loud and the BBC turned the volume down. Saw them live on stage not long after and Paul was fuming saying they made them look like twats and they won't perform on TOTP's again. Obviously Bruce Dickinson had other ideas when he took over lol

  • Classic !! Harris,Murray,Stratton,Dianno,Burr. When metal was really changing. Maiden were like a real metal Thin Lizzy in a way. A nd more progressive in the song writing !! Great clip !!

  • Does Di Anno have to tilt his head to the side after he sings every line?

  • LOLOLOLOL.

  • 100 PERCENT PERFECT

  • Just check out that one kid clapping in the audience while everyone else is just blankly staring at maiden.....what a noobish audience....anyways maiden's first two albums rock....and yeah i prefer the bootlegged 1980 black n white videos to this one...I wish i had witnessed em in that era live..but i wasnt even born den...Up the Irons...\m/

  • Just six teen, I think I'm drunk, Out of money Out of luck

I wanna shake ma ass to this,

  • hey is that Dennis Stratton on rhythm guitar?

  • @beanolabub yes, it's him.

  • @beanolabub

in iron maiden there's no rhythm guitar.

  • @mangymetal lol yes there is....to people cnt play lead guitar

one guitar is soft=rythem one guitar is louder=lead

  • @10078g

    I said.. In MAIDEN.

  • Comment removed

  • @mangymetal There is definitely a rhythm guitarist in Iron Maiden. In fact, there's two now.

  • @beanolabub - no - it's Dennis Stratton on twin lead guitar

  • yeah thats iron maiden god damned

  • top job by Paul

  • Up The Irons. This was the first live performance on TOTP since The Who because they refused to mime, now that is metal!

  • iron maiden äger fett:P

  • I remember watching this on TOTP and recorded it onto a C90 cassette. I still have it. Peter Powell introduces them (which is missing from this video).

At the time when this was perfomed virtually no-one played live on TOTP so it was very brave of Maiden to do so, and how well they pulled it off.

  • Yeah, in the book "run to hills" Steve and Rod refused to do it unless they played live. The band considered it a real cop out to mime. However they didn't like the audio as they said it was turned down to the point of being stupid and Clive was playing muted drums so that they could hear the fookin' guitars. They avoided TOTP for years after.

  • @WolfieTed I understand their concers about the low volume, but the BBC was right. This was for the TV audience, not for the live audience, and the lower volume gives it extra clarity, like in a studio recording. I mean, have you ever heard a more clear recording of the dual solo?

  • @jaivarsa I see your point. Steve however didn't and wasnt too happy (according to the book) One thing I love about Steve is that he is all about the live performance and the fans. They never forgot who got them to the top. The fans...Great band!

UP THE IRONS ME OL' FRUITS!

  • @izabelgoudie - The story goes (according to the official biography book from the late 1980s) that playing live wasn't about bravery, it was about them refusing to lip sync because they didn't want to come across as phonies.

The fact that they sounded as good live as they did in the studio did them big favours with the record buying public. Even at a quarter of their usual volume, they came across as fresh and energetic.

  • I wished the producers let them play the whole fuckin' song!!

I mean it, this beats the Live After Death version completely...

  • The best version from this song is found from Maiden Japan. in my opinion. Somehow Paul sounds better in these more punk kind of songs.

/watch?v=oLPh7t5Gfrg <-- the maiden japan version

  • maiden japan is the best iorn maiden live album fuck live after death

  • Metallica can go kiss my smelly ringpiece. Iron Maiden ARE the true godz of HM.

(And this comming from a geezah that used to call himself 'Andy the Metallica Fan' back in the 80s is saying a lot, don't you think?)

  • @K1w1scot Metallica aren`t gods of Heavy Metal...they are gods of Thrash Metal!!!...Iron Maiden are gods of Heavy Metal, and Black Sabbath are gods of METAL!!!!!!!

  • @alvartaken Maybe once upon a time... I couldn't place them (Metallica) as the gods of thrash now. Slayer, on the other hand...

  • @K1w1scot Now, there`s 4 gods...THE BIG FOUR!...

  • @alvartaken Yup! NEVER compromised...NEVER sold out! Though no doubt their gigs have. ?=)

  • @K1w1scot Well...People said that Metallica Sold out when they bringed RTL, especifficaly "Fade to Black"...but is a fuckin great song!!!...Load, Reload are Great!...St. Anger sucks...i admitt that but in Death Magnetic, they returned to thrash metal!...and well...they did not sold out....they only changed their style!!...and well...it wasn`t good for the band...but WHAT THE FUCK!!!...nobody cant say that Metalllica aren`t gods of metal!...or forget the Kill Em All?, RTL, MoP???

  • @alvartaken Sad to say, it wasn't so much their music that sold them out as more their attitude and rampant consumerist driven ethic (!), James and Lars are two of the biggest ego-masniacs on the planet now. Humility is beneath them now?

If that's the price of fame, then all hail the small indie bands.

  • @K1w1scot Well...i think that Lars and Bob Rock more than Kirk assumed an ambicious position...that`s true...but u are wrong saying that NOW...you have to know that the Napster situation was like 8 years ago...then they had thirst of money...but you have to watch them now!...their are not the ambicious monsters that they was in 2000...they changed and now the only thing that they want is to play music and raise their childrens!...

  • @alvartaken st anger is a great album man

  • @K1w1scot same, i used to be a metallica fan, not anymore

  • @catshumpcats3 indeed, with maiden its always the music and fans come first, money and fame second, unlike that other band.

  • @K1w1scot

    Legend.

  • I love how Clive headbangs while he drums. He was really great.

  • dennis straton the first line maiden guatarist

  • Dennis Stratton?

  • haha i love how he says "get out my way"

  • ive always ownders why he says LA jail? because there from england

  • LA just sounds cool.

  • Hmm...I always thought he said "county jail".

  • lol same

  • Steve Harris in the back on the stage?

  • it's a small stage. Nor room for Stephen's running ;)

  • Yep it was real, and they refused the playback, so they played live

    Up the iron

  • that's what special about it; it's live!

  • Oooh man, Burr is the best drummer...

    Good video...

  • @thesonoflucifer - Burr didn't have as much power as Nicko McBrain (about 85%, I'd say) but he was a far better songwriter. There weren't many songs, but those Burr wrote were significant, not filler.

  • this song is fuckin awesome

i like the Dickinson era i little bit better then the Di'anno era, but i have to say, this is one of the only songs, besides like prowler, that i woyuld rather hear Di'anno sing then Dickinson evertime

  • I prefer the Steve Harris era (i.e the entire Maiden spectrum)!!

  • You mean the Paul Diano Era Steve formed the band and plays bass

  • No what I mean is, I like everything Maiden have done, the entire spectrum! I.e. the Steve Harris era!!!

  • For luck Di'anno got kicked out of the band, I just don't like his voice, IMO!

Somebody can like his Voice, but I don't like it. Sounds too much punk.

  • that was the beauty of the whole thing...they were a metal band with a punk singer...best of both worlds...

  • Well said. The true metal songs had that edge. Just look at Motorhead/Girlschool's classic "Please Don't Touch". Ohhh the good ol' days.

  • If you think that you should check out some metalpunk, like G.I.S.M. and Syphilictic Vaginas. :)

  • @7thDayAtheist

Hardly say Punk is any good, but alright ^_^

  • Di'anno rocks!!

  • I've photo with him and his autograph :)

  • Paul Di Anno, vocalist of maiden until the '81

  • @Destroyer858 damn right...

  • Actually the people in the audience probably said "who the hell is this band" since most of them are probably disco and new wave fans.

  • @Vampire5169 That's Paul Di'anno he was in maiden from 79-81

  • @Vampire5169 the drug addict paul di anno who cnt sing

  • @10078g what you talking about of course he can sing

  • @mrdhibbribs nt as good as bruce

    bruce owns all

  • @10078g ofc, bruce is a god

  • I'm gonna be Dave Murray for our halloween party, and I put on my costume, which consists of a blonde wig, and a leather vest without a shirt. So I'm in my room jammin to maiden, with a blonde wig and no shirt, my dad walks in and looks at me and just shakes his head, like in dissappointment. HAHA

  • LOL

  • i'm gonna be Di'Anno!

  • lol, was that for real? :D

  • @morepiepleaseTV

Sounds like something I'd do. But my dad would be Steve. ^^

  • @morepiepleaseTV son,

i am disappoint, if you were my son though i would be like, Son,

    I am party!

  • shit man the crowds fukin lifeless!

    hail maiden!

  • Maiden= Best band EVER

  • Este video es definitivamente un Incunable...Aguante Maiden!!!!

  • nah man they did playback on wasted years on a german tv show i believe, look up on youtube wasted years playback. its hilarious the guys just mess around and switch instruments. its good

no man just some guys are mixing it on YT and uploading that.

  • Iron Maiden are one of the most influental bands of all time and they kick ass!!!!!!!! I'm a huge Maiden fan myself!!! Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!! You Rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how many version are there of running free?this one is different from the german pop/rock show version!!

  • The band's performance of "Running Free" on the German show Rock and Pop was one of a handful of lip-synched performances, as the band prefers to perform live.

  • "In 1980, the then fledgling heavy metal superstars Iron Maiden became the first band to play live on the show since The Who in 1972, when they refused to mime to their single "Running Free" - From Top of the Pops.

If any time after they were forced to mime, they usually let the audience know they were. As mentioned earlier by switching instruments or just fooling around. As for this show it was "We play live or we do not play" which was the precedent for the majority of Maidens TV spots.

  • @twainname wrong! check out T REX, I LOVE TO BOOGIE from 1976, totally live band and vocals!

  • did they kno they were going to be the best band in the whole world at that timE??

    UP THE IRONS!!

  • they are the best band in the whole world :p

  • Great to see these old recordings. Very hard to find. Thanks for putting it up. ObImpossibleRequest: Does anyone have a bootleg of any of Iron Maiden's work prior to Paul Di'Anno? I find Paul's work on Iron Maiden (and Battlezone) amazingly good, Bruce is great too, but they're not the only people to have been lead singer for one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Names and sketchy bios don't tell me what the earlier sound was like.

  • it seems weird, maiden with stratton

  • this is going stright into my favourites . . .

  • they seem lik punk at tht point not rock/heavy metal, by the way there dressed

  • they were metal, but Paul had a punk element to him

  • thanks!.cheers, hit the gas and here i go!

  • Of course it's Paul DiAnno.

I really respect Bruce Dickinson- he is an intelligent guy and has a lot of guts and charisma.

But I like Killers album with Paul DiAnno best of any Maiden albums. It still had a lot of that raw NWOBHM energy. And Paul gave it some street level energy. Some would say punk, but real punk and real metal to me is the same thing. Just a little different approach and more guitar acrobatics sometimes in metal. Most of my favorite bands are a little of both.

  • Great comment, I agree with you, Dickinson was the commercial frontman Harris was lookin for when havin Paul in the Band, but Di'anno is the best frontman this band ever had

  • "I'M RUNNING FREE YEAH I'M RUNNING FREE!!!" Gotta love that chorus...Just a song that makes ya wanna move to LA and start fresh!

  • no, that's probably Paul DiAnno. and his version of running free was better!

  • right Paul Dianno

  • you figured that out all on your own!? Btw, your "caps-locked" is on and you mis-spelled "That's".

  • Iron Maiden Refuse to do play back

they only ever did it once

Man On The Edge - With Blaze i belive on TOTP

  • playback can make a band look like shit in a heartbeat. priest got burned on a japanese tv show doing "take on the world". binks couldn't hear the playback and lost rhythm several times.

  • nah man they did playback on wasted years on a german tv show i believe, look up on youtube wasted years playback. its hilarious the guys just mess around and switch instruments. its good

  • Vaya increible sin lugar a dudas esta es una de las canciones que suenan mejor con paul que con bruce.

  • This was the first performance that was live music on "Top of Pops"..

  • not the very first... but the first in 8 years (since the who in 1972) up the irons!

  • Clive was the best

  • Yes.

  • McBrain also does great job I think both of them, Niko and Clive are great drumers and it's difficult to say who is better, but I personally like Niko more, he's funny xD

  • Both drummers are great but yes I agree with ya mate, Clive was my fave of the two... His work on "Beast" was incredible.

  • nickos a fuckin octopus though man, he just puts his head down and goes- hits everything 100% without even looking.

clive is a great freakin drummer but hes no match for nicko

  • clive had a unique style that lent itself perfectly to the first few albums. my fav too.

  • clive left during the recording of that album didn't he? or was it before? because mcbrain made his debut on that album

  • mcbrains debut was on piece of mind :S

  • It's funny how Paul always make the sames move with his head :P

  • it helps him keep time

some people tap there foot, some shake there head lol.

  • The exactly date is 13th Nov. 1980.

  • haha, looks like dianno got ticks with him swinging his head after each line xD (nothing against the guy)

  • No - they were the 1st band to play live on TOTP since the Who in 1972.

  • there is only a couple of words that can explain this song such as awsome sweet or up the irons

  • I totally forgot about this song! Man, it's been over 20 years since I heard this! Great song.

  • legend rox!

  • thanx for that! dennis and dianno together in a live perform on tv! great man! oldschool era of these guys are really rare to fing live videos! thanx! great singing by Paul!

  • Don't forget Clive Burr!

  • lol! yeah man sure! but as long as clive had been in the band up to 83 we have been a lot of chances to see him live with the guys.. but in here there's a fresh high quality live shit wth dennis and paul.. u got what I mean?..

  • they were the first ones to refuse to mime since the who in 1972

  • legendary maiden love it

  • Iron Maiden!!! Awesome!!!

  • no acually the who were but maiden kicks there ass

  • Yeh I was gonna say - the first band to ever play live live on Top of the Pops

  • No - they were the 1st band to play live on TOTP since the Who in 1972.

  • Well ... First Band to play live on a TOTP-Gig... certainly a merit... anyway - Fuk Top Of The Pops...

  • No - they were the 1st band to play live on TOTP since the Who in 1972.

  • Please coment!!!
