  • I see the legality of this matter. Even though this is a private, it is still falls under the umbrella of equality regardless of gender, color, and race. I also understand the native Hawaiians fighting to keep its heritage alive. TBH, there were no true native Hawaiians but travelers and explorers coming from other pacific islands. This case isn't a clear case of black and white. The Hawaiians are also Americans, native or not, we must continue to move forward. Should the boy be admitted? IDK.

  • some white kid suing the Hawaiian-dominating school in Hawaii? I wonder "who" put him up to that??? this video was posted nearly 3 yrs ago... any verdict on this case yet?

  • Section 1981 of the 1866 Civil Rights law that prohibits racial discrimination in private contracts should apply to white folk only, not people of color. In McDonald v. Santa Fe Trail (1976) Thurgood Marshall betrayed people of color by applying 1981 to discrimination against white folk too. Discrim against whites is justified by centuries of their lynching and rape of people of color. Whites lynch & rape to this day. The fewer straight white christian males, the more diversity.

  • Hawaiian's deserve to have this school.

Captain cook hadn't discovered Hawaii though. He couldn't have because the Polynesians were already living there. If this school were never built.Who knows what would happen? That could be the biggest thing ever if i got to go back home and go to that school. That is all i ask for is to just go to that school. This is mostly what Hawaiian's have left so why would they try to take that away from us? Aloha!

  • If anyone didnt know this Captain cook didnt discover hawaii. He couldn't have because the polynesians were already living there.

  • The people of this land have been suffering insult after repeated insult from the overthrow, to the admission polices, to the appeal to sell Hawaiian lands set aside for the Native Hawaiian people. Now Governor Linda Lingle stated Hawaiians have MORAL rights to ceded lands but the State has legal rights. What does that mean ?

  • I actually agree since this is a private school, but be honest: if Whites tried having a private Whites-Only school there'd be blood in the streets.

If Whites can't have anything for themselves, why should other races?

Let ALL races choose with whom they wish to to consort or none at all!

  • Whites had Whites only schools, restrooms, restaurants, ball fields and pretty much everything for centuries. We have more opportunities and priveleges than minorities, and other peoples that have been exploited.

The indigenous people are choosing with whom they wish to consort...and they choose other Hawaiians.

  • Kelly is right. Lets look at this in more detail. The key word here is private. Every private school has the right to invite who they like, if this was a state school, than the person who is suing has a case, but it's not a state school, it's a private school, and like i said, any private school has the right to invite who every they want in their school. So, Kelly is right in my opinion.

  • i'll believe anything that u say Kelly...lol!

  • Well said and thank you very much. This is about the Hawaiian people and no one else. Our land and culture was forcefully taken from us. The school was established by our last Queen to help mitigate this awful event and help her people find their way in this new enviroment. Leave it alone. Enough has been taken from us.

  • I could not have said it better.

  • Great video, thanks for sharing.

I'm writing a paper on this issue for a college course at the University of New England in Maine. I support Kamehameha Schools 100%!

Ua mau ke ea o ka `aina i ka pono.

  • Aren't those schools private property? What gives?

  • the Doe kid is just stupid. the school is for Hawaiians and it is the last thing that we Hawaiians have left to ourselves as well as a few peices of lands. does he not understand that Kamehameha supports Hawaii's keiki and the last remains of hope for the future?

  • i know

i want the admissions policy to stay the way it is

i dont want it to be lost

it is our last thing we have that is native hawaiian

  • Europeans wreaked havoc and genocide everywhere they set foot... From 800,000 to 46,000! That's genocide!

  • its lady deathstrike she was really awesome in the x- men two, her fight scene with wolverine was bomb. ^_^ yay for Kelly ku~!

  • Brah this wahine is representing

  • The teenger that filed a lawsuit against Kamehameha is a whiney typical cry baby American and I'm going to make a guess that he was probally white because out of all the races white people are the ones that do the most sueing in this country. I'll have people get upset over this comment and call me a racist. Go ahead I could care less right now. But hey I'm not ging to hide behind the bush I'm speaking the truth here man. From personal observing and experience.

  • Boo-freaking-hoo. So I guess since the U.S. is so reprehensible, we should have just given Hawaii over to Japan instead. They would have treated you guys much better, lol...

  • Oh, please.

You say that as though the U.S. declared war against Japan to save the "poor helpless Hawai'ians".

  • maybe you haoles shouldnt have overthrew us, then all your haole kids wouldnt want to come to kamehameha schools, boo hoo to you to

  • we werent even allowed to vote, we werent allowed to practice our culture, we werent given previlages to an equal oppertunity such as education, we werent even given the chance to be educated on land ownership, a concept that was never practiced by hawaiians and by the time we were allowed all these "freedoms" our culture and people were in ruins.

  • this wahine is a pure hawaiian.

  • im hawaiian to but i dont go to a school like that i go to sunnycrest and i wish i was at my real home i belong to hawaii not washington thank you 4 making this video make more

  • Look at the camera love!

  • Only a non-hawaiian would ask how much Hawaiian blood does she have. It doesn't matter how much hawaiian she has, she is an Hawaiian.

  • Their is not many pure Hawaiians left, as to most are mixed like Kelly, and like myself.

  • To be accepted into Kamehameha Schools, it is my understanding that the student MUST be at least 1/8 Hawaiian... It receives NO federal funding so should not be subject to federal admissions regulations. The Hawaiian people and their heritage must be protected. Much Aloha to the Hawaiians and Aloha Aina.

  • Imua Kamehameha

  • Bravo, Kelly! Not only are you gorgeous, but incredibly articulate and intelligent! Well said. After 95 percent of Native Hawaiian people have been wiped out by murder and diseases, the very least the U.S. government can do is allow Native Hawaiians to help themselves grow and thrive. Kamehameha Schools do not use federal funds. They are supported by a private trust started by Hawaiian monarchy. Congrats, Kelly, for having the balls to say what you said. Mahalo nui loa.

  • Ua mau ke'ia ika aina ika pono....the life of the land is perpetuaited in rightouesness......

    I support Princess Pauahis dream......

  • IMUA!!! Kamehameha

  • Why would a private school not want to accept someone who wants to learn about hawaii

  • Many hawaiians are of mixed asian

  • KAMEHAMEHAAAAAAAA!!!

  • KaMe HaMe HAAAAA!!!

  • KA-ME-HA-ME-HAAAA!!!

  • WAKE UP ALL U AMERICANts....what will happen when BUSH's term is over!?!?......let's see if America is the Home of the Brave....

  • How much Hawaiian blood does she have? She sure doesn't look Hawaiian.

  • Does it matter? Only a non-hawaiian would question how much hawaiian a person has based on how a person looks!! Anyone who has Hawaiian should be accepted and attend this awesome school, a gift given by our princess to all Native Hawaiians.

  • It doesn't matter

-If you are Native Hawaiian, then you are Native Hawaiian

  • Why Question her blood line? She stands firm for Hawaiian rights. This day and age, we need to come together as one and fight for our culture.

  • She is English, Chinese, and Hawaiian mixed.

  • that's pretty racist. it does not matter how much Hawaiian blood she has--a policy created by the US Congress to divide Native Hawaiians and a policy later adopted by the Nazis. What matters is her genealogical roots. She is Hawaiian because her ancestors were Hawaiian. That's it. Case closed.

  • How would you know how a hawaiian looks like?

  • this is not dbz related lol

  • Trust me, let oil be discovered in Harlem or Detroit or on a reservation and you will see the triumph of hyper-capitalism over democratic "Enlightenment" any day. Whiteness wedded to wealth propels the reality of racism and the myth of democracy. Hold fast, KS, fight economic and racist tactics that are trying to prostitute the Constitution to justify majoritarianism and mob misrule!! Remember, Van Paul and others of this ilk, Democracy is inspired, not imposed.

  • Democracy is dead, when was the last time you met anyone you've voted for, even locally? hello? democracy means we all meet together and discuss our thoughts, not let some asshole rule because you *think* he shares your mentality. both sides lie to get the scraps off the table and leave we who dont have our head encoloned to be forced to choose instead of being the chosen to make a 3rd or even 4 parties. 2 heads of government are better than 1 for the reason of divide and conquer

  • There are inner city Black enclaves, Islamic communities, and native American reservations. Few of these area draw the notice of KS and its use of restorative justice--a strategy that these other non-white communities also employ. The only difference is that there is no exploitable capital for greedy opportunists to impose free-market chaos masquerading as democratic liberalism on these Black, Islamic, and native American communities.

  • What motivates dissenters of the KS's use of "restorative justice" is its multi-billion dollar endowment. In puritannical, "westernized," and "civilized" US, that translates to lawyers and others twisting the law to access and exploit the multi-billion dollar legacy of a people who have survived internecine strife and external colonization.

  • In a nutshell: Race may be a myth of pseudo science, but RACISM is real and is perpetuated by REAL cultural practices and institutions. People are racially oppressed not because of genotype but because of phenotype/physical features.

  • If I wasn't straight I do her! I love you Kelly Hu!

  • Thanks VanPaulP. Spout your intolerance and ignorance elsewhere on the web.

  • your wrong. atleast iraq mails to all of iraq. only continental states, nobody says "i wanna honeymoon in Basra!" we've enslaved our own kind since the day man thought they were better than woman and vice versa, whichever came first. I spout my intolerance and ignorance equally because humanity doesn't let up on my ass to let me get some intellect except from 200 yr old dead poets and novelists. oh wait he "wont check the page anymore" guess ill have to repost in his PROFILE HAHAHA

  • Semantics.

  • Also VanPaulP, As to whether Native Hawaiians had it as bad, first of all, the dying of 90% of the population isn't enough for you? And second, why does it have to be a contest between African Americans & Native peoples. I agree --- their treatment totally sucked at America's hands.

  • A few years ago the Wall St Journal did a piece on how alumni kid admissions amount to affirmative action for white, privileged kids. So VANPAULP, are your pants in a knot about that one? I mean, it's like saying that you had to have an ancestor that went to the school before....

  • I agree with Kelly Hu: people who still bear the vestiges of former oppression MUST protect themselves by positive congregation, by uniting against the forces that traumatized them in the first place. The Kamehameha Schools, though perhaps flawed in some ways, nevertheless is a necessary model for marginalized people to adopt; these schools are a model of surviving the trauma of historical oppression.

  • Oppressed people deserve, as did Virginia Woolfe, "a room of one's own," a space to congregate around the trauma caused by the excesses of colonizers who, under the guise of "imposed democracy and Western civilization" decimated these people and their culture.

  • As a people who were exploited by the US, which now imposes whiteness on these indigenous people, Hawai'ians have every right to practice a positive congregation to resist the meaner elements of US cultural practices such as hyper-capitalism, race-based supremacy, even a dubious Western "Enlightenment."

  • VanPaulP: Kelly was not paid a dime for taping this. And theorizing that the Japanese would have colonized Hawai'i doesn't justify another country's doing so. Hawaiians are indigenous and "real"; just because the Hawaiians originated from Polynesia doesn't make them less indigenous. And the conditions of native Hawaiians are not stereotypes and their condition is not their own doing.

  • Many non-white schools and neighborhoods exist precisely because race- and economics-motivated actions such as gerrymandering and traditional, "de facto" societal practices. However, because whites don't desire these places, they encourage the positive congregationism that develops in these enclaves of forced separatism.

  • However, when such a group is self-sufficient and totally unbeholden to current status quo values and identities, then the dominant system seems to want to "embrace" these people's means of economic empowerment, along with those in the group deemed socializable. At least, I think how some of this may work, eh, VanPaulP?

  • Comment removed

  • wow you don't know your history. first, 3/4 of hawaii was under kahekili when cook arrived--w/o gun powder.

The bottom line is this--people like you are happy because you're middle class and rich and don't care (or maloa) about the majority of your own people who yeah we enjoy certain democratic rights-- which we already began to have under the monarchy--but are economically the worst off largely because of US policies and you don't care that 1 million acres of land was stolen from the Crown.

  • If a school was open for people only of caucasion descent...then it just means its for all "white" people...right? And, yes..that would be racist. A school for a recognized Indigenous people founded by one their last royals...to preserve a dying people and their culture? You be the judge.

  • How familiar with the history are you?

  • The very nature of colonization is that its effects often remain long after actual colonization has ended. It doesn't matter who MIGHT have colonized these people; US people DID colonize Hawai'ians and imported to this island the desiring mechanism called "white-skin privilege." Uniting a people uniquely beset with historical injustice by making a "space of one's own" is a valid and ethical strategy to survive historical white supremacy.

  • No it isn't plausible if you've done your research.

  • Cook and other colonizers subjected these peoples to trauma and these conditions arguably are BECAUSE of the harmful effects of colonization. It seems that your observations ignore/warp/revise documented history.

  • I think that the purpose of the school has been fulfilled....oppurtunities that weren't there are now there for everyone in Hawai'i.... if someone else wants be apart of Kamehameha schools, I feel the opportunity should be granted...sharing is caring!

  • Wrong. Native Hawaiians today are still poorly represented in virtually every measure of socio-economic well-being, perform well below their peers throughout the educational system, and have significantly lower levels of educational attainment. Native Hawaiians have among the lowest incomes and highest rates of poverty in Hawaii. They have higher rates of teen pregnancy and higher rates of incarceration.

  • oh, well that's not good, all the best!

  • the only thing illegal was the stealing of the government, the illegal annexation, and the illegal vote that made us a state.

  • We don't. In Hawai'i, the locals all get along. A lot of the people that live in Hawai'i are mixed ethnicities. I go to school in Hawai'i, but not to Kamehameha. I'm also Hawaiian. A lot of my friends are Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, even some haole. We even get along with the people at Kamehameha. The school just gives preference to Native Hawaiians, as was in the will of Princess Pauahi Bishop.

  • And I still didn't get to finish.

Fifth: If having a school for Native Hawaiians is violating civil rights, aren't other Private schools doing the same thing? Accepting only the smart people, only Christians, only a specific kind of person? Then why are they not also being given lawsuits? Is that not discrimination because you are singling out one kind of school, which includes people with the same race?

  • Sorry, I didn't get to finish.

Fourth: Kamehameha schools was founded before the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The will of Princess Pauahi Bishop states the the school is to help the children of Hawai'i in today's society.

  • No it doesn't. Giving preference to Native Hawaiians is not against the law.

First off, in the constitution of of the state of Hawai'i, the government is supposed to protect all things Hawaiian.

Second, Kamehameha schools is a private school which receives no federal funding.

Third, Kamehameha schools is not only for FULL Hawaiians. There are many people there that are part Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, etc.

  • Kelly Hu I love you too.

  • kelly who? damn! she's hotttttt!!!!

  • Who cares about that!I go to Kamehameha schools, I am proud to say I am hawaiian and we will win the case. You guys are to busy worrying about whose hot, there are more important things in life, I know this and im only 12

  • We won the case!

    Well, they settled it.

  • someday you will only care for whos hot or not!

  • whoaaa kelly is Kam Grad? right on sistah. REPRESENT!!!!

  • I love Kelly Hu. I think she is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.

  • mmmm kelly hu

  • From what I've read in the NY times, and correct me if I'm wrong, anyone who can trace at least one Native Hawaiian ancestor at the time that Cook landed in Hawaii sometime around the late 1800s can qualify for admission in the Kamehameha school system.

  • Uh isn't she Chinese, not Hawaiian?

  • Kelly's multiethnic background includes both Hawaiian and Chinese ancestry.

  • its called Hapai (Ha-pah) part Hawaiian and part (insert ethinic background here)

  • you mean HAPA...not HAPAI which means to be pregnant...HAPA means half which is what u were trying for..

  • not true. if you didn't know... Hawaiians are a minority in Hawai'i. The school is used as a way to help the youth of the hawaiian people to better themselves, to make better decisions in the future and protect against the dying race.

  • But seriously I dont understand, if it's your money you can do whatever the hell you like with it. People who home school don't have to open their doors to other people. Apart from the scale isn't your situation exactaly the same?

  • There's more than just scale that differentiates these two situations.

  • Kamehameha Schools is a private school that does not receive federal funding. Its admission policy is meant to provide restorative justice for a Native people harmed by Western colonialism. It cannot be compared to white schools in South Africa, which were meant to serve the white minorities in power at that time.

  • Well, I'm sure the NAZIS were trying to provide restorative justice... to ARYNAS deprived of their inheritance... by the JEWS!!!

  • The Nazis murdered as many as 7 million Jews in the Holocaust. I'm sure you don't mean this comparison.

  • I don't mean it i was simply joking. I see that perhaps the joke was a bit distastefull though.

  • to akaLucifer

I'm sorry, what are ARYNAS? Did you mean Aryans? The german's paid their debt by now. You stating such a thing shows your unawareness of global politics and world history. You know if you'd tell that joke to a german, he'd be so pissed, and probably kick your mo$%&/ass for being disrespectful to the ppl who suffered and were butchered.

  • I'm confused, lets say a white person, or black person who whants to attend the school was born in Hawaii. Could they attend the school? Or what if someone was a mix of white, and native hawaiian, or Chinese, and Hawaiian, could they attend. Or is this a school who teaches absolute racial purity? Please explaine:)

  • Very good question. One does not have to be full Native Hawaiian to attend the Schools.

In order to accomplish its mission, the admissions policy of Kamehameha Schools' provides a preference for Native Hawaiian children, but is not intended to exclude non-Hawaiians.

  • thank you for posting these videos!

  • where is she looking at? :)

  • She's probably looking at an auto que, you can tell because she stumbles over her words at one point. It's really rare to trip over your words if you've remembred a script.

  • lol. she's looking at the teleprompter...too bad its far from the camera. but she looks amazing as always ;=)

  • We did not have too much time to prep and do takes for this shoot and had very little money as well. Kelly is looking at cue cards that I'm holding. Her flow is interrupted at one point because I didn't do the cue card switch correctly.

  • esta buena hasta soltando el mayor rollo de la historia

  • So what's the latest news on this issue?
