  • Ligeti's music is the opposite of Vasarely's paintings. With Ligeti you hear things that aren't actually written on the page, and it's gone in a flash. But with Vasarely, you look at it for ages and think "there must be SOMETHING there"

  • Open two Youtube windows. Play this and "Artikulation" at the same time for an amazing mashup.

  • @aqdrobert

haha, yay, did it and it's great! I recommend it to all of you :D

  • @aqdrobert You're absolutely right, buddy!

    People, TAKE HEED!

  • @aqdrobert I played "Artikulation" and Stockhausen's "Kontakte" at the same time.....trippy.

  • The beginning was so frightening that I tore my headphones off and exclaimed, "GODDAMMIT!"

  • @Ghoopty Hahahaha.... It made me jump like hell too - same reason

  • CIELOS!!! :o :D que mierdaa seria la música de siglo XXI sin Ligeti

  • Love the Victor Vasareley backdrop...my fave artist!

  • No dislikes! :)

  • @nellupellu awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :(

  • If you don't like this I bet you like Justin Bieber!

  • @ILoveAmp lol lol looooooooool xD

  • Some rock musicians light their guitars on fire with a match and lighter fluid. Ligeti sets a pipe organ on fire by PLAYING it!

  • Ligeti es fabuloso. Me encanta

    Gracias por compartirlo

  • Quite amazing! Must have a go at this myself some time ;)

  • I heard that the organ's electric circuit emitted smoke !

  • Most innovative composer of the second half of the XXth century. The richness and originality of his imagination remains unparalleled.

  • Es una experiencia mística oir esta pieza

  • Is this the only recording of Volumina by Szathmáry?

  • No, there is at least one other, by swedish organist Hans-Ola Ericsson. You´ll find it in BIS´ catalogue

  • on which organ szathmary played the piece?

  • In the first version of the piece the organ had broken!

    Then he revised

  • @sebastian181812 Yes, apparently the blower caught fire!

  • @sebastian181812 I twice left an organ with damage to its mechanics, that is, keys that began to disfunction. That made me very prudent with organs; I won't even consider playing this piece, as much as I like avant-garde music...

  • @sebastian181812 Is it true?

  • Amazing. When you hear it the first time, you don't think it's an organ. Incredible what Ligeti did.

  • That's because you're supposed to disconnect the blower and put in a vacuum cleaner instead...

  • I think that's the first etude you're talking about.

  • You're right. I got my Ligeti mixed up. This is the one that nearly set the organ on fire at its premier. Which is why I'm still not allowed to play it anywhere. :(

  • @Angultimmarik lol, as soon as it began I thought, "OH, Ligeti did an organ piece." Great music, though!

  • When you learn it maybe you could upload a video. It's always nice to see how these sounds are reproduced in practice.

  • I'd need to find somewhere willing to let me put a vacuum cleaner where the blower of the organ should be first... :s

  • @eoghdes18 That's for Étude No. 1 - "Harmonies". A (slightly) less disruptive alternative is to remove the weights from the air reservoir

Trust me, "Volumina" needs full strength blowers!

  • Amazing piece. I've ordered the music on sheetmusicplus!

Gonna play it as soon as I can!

  • Wow

  • wow...! excelent beggining.!
