I had a real good friend that lived in St. Petersburg was in the filming for this trailer. I also knew a guy that was a Sci_fi model builder that worked on the train model for it.
I did with some of the Bronze Dragon Stunt Team back in 85'-86' they paid us all a dollar to do this. lol.. I was costumed as Patsy, King Author's faithful manservant, and coconut-clocker, from Monte Python. The theater shots were done in Seminole fla, at the Seminole Theater, but all the shots involving folks flying from their chairs, were filmed in the adtitorium at old St. Pete High on 5th ave. N. in St. Pete, as they had flying rigs there for stage shows
CONTINUED: They removed rows of chairs from the theater and transported them to the auditorium for use there. The visual effects of the train passing on the walls, was created by large spinning discs with windows cut out of them, with lights behind them. The lighted disc created the illusion of windows passing on the walls..
Oh WOW!!!! What a surprise, finding this! I remember watching this at the AMC in Daytona Beach...years ago! The girl's head turning all the way around scared me as a kid...lol =)
Well I'll be.. someone posted this thing here. I produced and directed this thing back in 1986. The sequel was almost 4 minutes long and we did it all for 60 grand. Thanks to ever posted it. I'll try to getthe sequel on here as well...
I shot the stills on the second AMC Midnight Movie Express spot.
I'm hoping that someone can put that one up here as I loaned my VHS copy of it back in the late 80's and never got it back.
By the way, I've shot stills now on over 50 films and I just finished working on "Piranha 3-D" for The Weinstein Company and I got my film stills start with you Frank! I'd love to work with you again sometime...
We first saw this at the "Star Trek III - Search For Spock" premiere in 1984. The "STOP THAT DOG!!" line (from the 1982 John Carpenter "Thing" remake of course) had us laughing so hard for so long that we ruined the opening Spock death scene for the rest of the theater. As I recall this trailer was better than the movie.
We had an AMC theater that showd Rocky Horror, Dawn of the Dead, Liquid Sky, Wizards and other stuff like that. I beleive it was the first theater franchise to have such an atraction. It was quite popular and lucrative for a while, but then these movies started coming out on home video and cable television ( at about the time that this comercial here was made ) and that kinda pute an end to it. Still it was fun while it lasted.
Does anyone remember the Midnight Movie Express trailer where a couple is running away from the train, which has teeth and looks totally evil? It used to scare the crap out of me! I wish someone would upload it.
Yeah, that was the sequel we did. Done before CGI, everything was completed in camera - even the animation. Steve, Chuck, Alisha, Craig, Markus... fun days
I saw a sequel that had the couple going to a therapist and having flashbacks to the first ad - saw it in Feb 1991 in Orlando as one of the trailers right before Rocky Horror. The audience even said lines to it!
Frank, yeah those were fun days. It's Glenn--I was assist. camera operator on both trailers. (I was just thinking about these trailers because I was shooting a video for Cobb Cinebistro this week that is opening in Hyde Park, TB)
Learned a lot from you and all we did. Crazy stuff we did back then.
I was the guy in the white suit when the door opened and everyone rushed through (after Brad says, "See I told it wasn't going to be so bad"). They cut my head off. It was made at Seminole mall in St. Pete, Florida in the Summer of 1985 by Frank's Garage Productions. Just remembering those days.

well it appears this commercial was stupid! all i saw was chaos and out of control pshycos stepping on each other! then just total destruction! this would never bring in guests to an AMC theater because of the madness and chaos!
how would i know? because I WORK AT an AMC theater!
The commercial was so stupid they ran this trailer for the better part of ten years at the start of every midnight movie on Friday and Saturday. Who do you think the audience for midnight movies is, little old ladies and large families with small children? HELLO.

YES! Just as "he11kat" said; been looking for this for some time.
Fond memories of high school in the 80s.

WOW!! This brings back so many memories!! I do remember watching this trailer before the sneak previews.
They played this when I went to see Predator and RoboCop back in 1987.
I believe the theater was called AMC Marina 8 in Miami, Florida.

I found this guy on this forum who I guess helped make this trailer. He was really nice.

Here, you don't catch the train. The train catches YOU!

Awsome!!! I think the voice at the end is Russ Albums for 95YNF in Tampa/St.Pete
bhcge 3 years ago
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Very well made for a regional commercial! Shot at Seminole Mall, jesus...
emerpus01 3 years ago
@bhcge It was very much Russ Albums; he's still in the VO business. Like U92's Jeff Laurence, he does mostly spots and station imagers these days.
