I can't imagine how it may have been for those survivors of WWII in 1975 who happened to watch this anime in the company of their grandchildren... particularly those who served in the Navy: Dive bombers, carriers, torpedoes, fighters, Yamato... and coffins, plenty of them. Thanks to Leiji Matsumoto and all those responsible for this fabulous anime series.
I wished that the American editors hadn't doctored up what Lysis (Domel), had actually done in his final act against the Argo (Yamato) in "Star Blazers". As a kid I wondered what had actually happened Lysis. Now I know.
@WDJeff they did a pretty good job with that edit as the bomb attached to the hull. but like u i then wondered what happened to Lysis as he was never sceen again, now we know. either way the 3rd deck is the worst place to work on the Argo, here it was blown off the ship, later it will fall off the ship into the acid sea on gamalon, and even later in the Comet Empire take a direct laser shot and explode from within.
Also from Wrath of Khan...Spock's funeral in a torpedo could have been inspired from the funeral scene here. Man, there's tons of stuff in this series.
Reminds me of the ending of Wrath of Khan where the enemy tries to destroy the Enterprise by blowing himself up in a nebula. The uniforms even look similar to those worn in the engineering section of the Enterprise in that movie, as does the havoc in the lower parts of both ships.
Is it just me, or is everyone else seeing crazy similarities with later sci-fi films of the 70's thru the 00's? Everytime I watch these episodes, I swear that I see references/inspiration in other films and series!
Love this show, but the Gamilon fleet are all within about 100 meters of each other, space is a pretty big place. Spread out a bit, boys...oh well, a bit late now, DOH
One thing is the drill going in reverse removing the missile from the Yamato, but how does this work as a propulsion system that launches the missile straight for the Gamilon fleet? The missile should had simply drifted away the moment it was pulled out of Yamato, and not fast enough... They should have had some argument like Mr. Sanada cross wiring the thing to fire "back thrusters" and it would have been perfect.
Never fight an enemy on his own terms. Dommel searched all of space to find the perfect place for his plan. Captain Okita was right to fight but he let the enemy dictate the terms.
@MARK1HOE Lysis knew he could not destroy Yamato completely thats why he gave them some time the evacuate third bridge. Glory to Gamilon and Great Earth.
Well, the thing is that Captain Okita wanted to finish the strugle once and for all so Yamato could arrive soon to Iscandar without further obstacles. That´s why he agreed to Domel´s challenge.
Gee - it delayed them by further three months for repairs, caused numerous casualties, they were just lucky that Dessler did not send in another fleet while they were immaneuverable!
Shima was right in pointing out in Ep21 that this was just another detraction from the schedule. In earlier episodes, Okita had listened to his advice; but here he evidently misjudged due to his increasing illness. That's why after that he decides better to stay in bed for the rest of the mission. :-)
@Restitutus Agreed. Okita's judgment seems a lot more out of place than it was in the beginning. Nice realistic touch to show the declining health of the the captain.
nope he was very inteligent and it wasnt a mistake if the yamato doenstn take the chalange then the full power fleet of this empire would engage it at galimus and destroy it like the captain said we have to engage them no mather what
Hey... The drill missile didn't have a hole in the tip in the scenes before the strike. And anyway, which engineer would design a special weapon whit a flaw like that! I mean, come on... Would you build a missile whit a hole in the nose that could provide a direct access to the missile's internal systems? It is a pity the producers didn't come up whit a better idea on how to counter the Gamilus drill missile.
Maybe because most drill missiles would be attacked from the outside? The safest place for a access hatch on a drill thingie would have to be the bit-tip I guess, why would they expect the gun barrel to lead right to the engine room? Also, the plot demand a way out.
One hit, four carriers! Note that Domel's fleet suffers the same handicap as Shultz' fleet in Ep10: Gamilusians keep too tight formation! So that, if one of them gets into trouble he causes cascading disaster all around. Maybe they are so afraid in space that they crouch together as closely as possible...
It should also be remarked that Domel is never "downgraded" but till the end depicted as a very competent strategist who is only defeated by bad luck (and the envy of the less competent).
Agreed, quadrillions of cubic miles of space and they hang together so closely - not a good idea. Same thing happened in Starship Troopers, pretty much every other sci fi movie made.
Rommel... no, Dommel had a perfect plan to defeat Yamato, but good courage, determination and wisdom overcame it all - another life message from "Yamato."
Okay; I know the term "will use their own weapon against them", but that's gotta be the luckiest hit in anime history O.O

Gotta love the respect a guy shows, before he blows himself, and good chunk of another ship to smithereens.

My 8-year-old comments on this episode:
Captain Okita committed a grave mistake when he agreed to Domel's challenge. I would never accept an offer from an enemy!

One caveat about this: Okita had no idea they were homing in on Gamilus.

Anybody remember how they played the Domel suicide thing when it was StarBlazers? I'm pretty certain the didn't show it.
They did show the funeral, though. I remember being moved by it even in the fifth grade.
Funny that the captain didn't remove his hat to put on his space helmet.
