Not actually... The american accent in most of the english portuguese speakers comes from the music, tv entertainment and films heard, which are in their majority american. I supose that happens in many other countries.
Besides, even in UK you find completely different accents.
The point is that she is able to communicate and transmit the message, and I guess that is the important issue here.
In Portugal, the schools teach proper UK accent, for example, its spelled colour, not color. But, as filipabiscoita said, there's alot of US influence, mainly in cinema and TV.

Portugal is so close to UK, I would have thought she would learn proper British accent, instead of some US accent.
I guess the US market is more attractive?
