I have long hair with a 1/4 of my head shaved and I work at a counseling agency.my bosses are real cool though but i never wear my hair loose I always either wear it in a braid or in a pony tail.sometimes when i get corn rows I feel uncomfortable because of micro-agressions but I feel that this is why so many people are pressured to make their hair less ethnic or more "professional".It's all these aggressions that we receive on a day to day basis. It's racism and prejudice that's been passed down
Incidents like this reveal what the new racism looks like. It's much more subtle than Jim Crow, but it speaks volumes that it's still acceptable to socially force non-whites to assimilate into a euro-centric view of what is professional AND publicly jest about it at an institution of "higher" learning. Every now and then you get breaks in the facade of social equality and we can see how bad race relations still are. Thanks for posting. :)
Also...there is only one thing that will make people take you more seriously, and that is life experience. Maturity and experience are the ONLY 2 things that will make people take you seriously. Once you start displaying leadership, tolerance, and maturity, and stop standing around waiting for people to take you seriously, then you will be respected, not until then.
So...all white people are rich now? HAHAHA. It smelled like money? 1. You are at the same university as these "pale people." 2. Wearing your hair manicured is a sign that you take care of yourself. It is proven statistically that people that "style" their hair are 30-40% more successful than those who are more "devil may care."
Please tell me when you said "pass/get by" you were being sarcastic? Because I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with your appearance. I hope nobody ever makes you feel this way.
i was more caught by your "get by" comments about skin tone and speech. i have been looking at high profile people who are extraordinarily successful. the one trait most seem to have is that they are very comfortable in their own skin. authenticity is compelling
in 2012, it depends on the work place. giuliani background is law government corporate finance. these are conservative workplaces that depend on meeting client expectations. there are plenty of careers even in business that are relaxed about hairstyle. it depends on the intellectual capital you bring to table. bring an optimal or irreplaceable skill set and you can skip the barber.
@66Fallout66Man66 You do realize that's a social construct of discrimination right? You sound completely ignorant and like a complete douche bag if you really think like that. Go back to watching your media fill your head with fallacies moron.
@MrWTFBOOOOOOM when did i say i judge them by there look alone? u damn fool im saying people that look good and clean attract business not some ape lookin freak
@66Fallout66Man66 So people with straight hair or not as ethnic hair that have it longer are okay but not ethnic hair? You are the damn fool and calling people freaks based on their hair length is foolish to the utmost degree. You said you are judging them with this phrase you said "well dude ethnic hair is disgusting" THAT'S CALLED JUDGMENT FOOL. "ape lookin freak"? Are you kidding me? Are you for real or are you just naturally this stupid and ignorant I'm done with you your too dumb to argue
Write a book about this specific thing and make some money! I as a black man was Rollin at this vlog because it is so true! It is just classic! Different standards for different people! Wow. Tell it like it is!
@jayhaile Yes. There are different expectations for different people. Live with it, or don't, I don't care. I am white and southern. I was born with this affliction. Why is it an affliction? Because every black person i meet on the streets on a daily basis subconsciously expects me to pull my hood out of my back pocket at any given moment, and start burning a cross. True strength comes from rising above those low expectations that people set for you.
Working in Corporate America can be very structured and regimented. Many hairstyles that were once taboo e.g dreadlocks are still frowned upon but tolerated. I recently saw a guy walking around the building with a huge afro and I know for a fact his hair was braided when he was hired. He got some strange looks but that's about it. The good news is that things are changing for the better whether it's hair or tattoos. Now we need some CEO's sporting dreadlocks--Mj
Guiliani reacting as he did has nothing 2 do with your bros afro... the afro haired guy insulted Guiliani so ere go afro haired guy will be insulted back! get what u deserve... simple rule for all races even negro.
Because women have long hair, but they straighten or curl it and keep it nice looking..... men who have long hair it looks dirty and not clean cut, and if the man keeps it really polished looking that is viewed as feminine.... so either way long hair for men is viewed negatively in the business world. White men have to keep their hair short in the business world too.... so i dont get your point....???
Personally i think long hair is cute and that dreds are hot amd not dirty at all and you shouldnt have to do anything bc people should like you just the way you arbe!!!! Its bullshit wgen people are rasist and sexist and all of that shit just knoe that all of us out here watcching you love you just the way you are (expt the haters they jus be jelly lol) - Lindsay
Being white and gay, perhaps I have both liberal views - my gay side - and patriarchal views, my white 'ruling class' side.
I love 'ethnic' hair on any guy who comes by it 'naturally'. I even like dreadlocks on white, surfer/hipster types, but they need a cool-gravitas to pull it off. But I don't really like long hair on white guys if it's messy. Then again, I HATE unruly long hair on women, as well. So, maybe I like my 'thoughts' to be unruly, and my hair to be corralled somehow!
That guys jelous cause he can't grow none. I personally don't think its unprofessional to have long hair in like buisness lifestyle ...aslong as they look goood cause some don't look good with long hair or some don't look with short hair. Aslong as they look clean an look like they care about there hygiene. Maybe a pony tail with long hair an clean it around an make sure your facial hair is well trimmed....or if they like.looking "dirty " spray alot of.Cologne to atleast smell like cleaness ha
very good video ! it made me sit here and think of how i think people think of my hair. i think in general i haven't had too many negative experiences are comments on my hair. only one comes to mind when another teacher said if i want to continue in the teaching profession i should have a more "professional" look. but...took it with a grain of salt because bitches ain't shit!
RUDY GIULI-wanna-be is a talentless, wanna be hack who milked 9-11 @the time because he knew he planned to run for prisident. I even predicted it at the time. Indeed he is talentless and kinda reminds you of a kind, but socially detached clueless worm. Long Live the Mayor!!!
*shakes my long, ethnic hair* ... To be honest, I have never really taken the time to wonder whether or not people take me seriously. I just do what the fizzuck I want, and you can come along for the ride if you like lol... but... I don't care where you film your vlogs at. You can do it in a dumpster, I will always watch them.
coded racism plain and simple. he can't come right out and say "you're black so you are dirty, filthy, and nasty. so he uses different words to describe you instead of skin color. very awful whrn you hear it. me, i call people out on it all the time so they are aware i know what they are doing.
@smoovsouljah the guy wasn't black, I don't think, but he was sort of racially ambiguous. I think it was more of a dirty hippie/occupier thing. I think that it is very irresponsible to cry racism simply because of a personal hunch that a comment could conceivably be racist. After all, Rudy thought that welfare recipients were "like real people" in his very words.
I have long curly hair, not very usual in my town (plus 4 piercings and a tattoo) and I must say I have a really nice job above average expectations, and in my company your aspect does not seem to be a problem, people can get a better position despite their looks. We have managers with dreadlocks and pink hair for instance. Yet I have to mention this is not something common here, very few companies at least here in Mexico will hire someone with dyed hair or dreadlocks.
just because your clean shaven, have fancy suit, freshly showered doesnt mean you cant viciously RAPE the so called "unwashed" repeatedly. we are the 99%, beware
right or wrong shorter hair is business standard. The mayor is old school, & out of line for judging, perpetuating that attitude in public. Not everyone is in, or plans to be in the straight laced (& somewhat racist) business world. He should have taken the higher road.
JK. I deal with this on movie sets. Of course those like Rudy Giuliani who are talentless, unimaginative, and downright stuck in the 20th Century suffer from low self-esteem. To they feel superior when they put others down for things outside of their control. Namely how they are born beautiful. Seriously, Look at RUDY. He looks like he's in his death throws. Take yourself seriously. Openly mock and ridicule suck people. Then treat them like the uglies that they are. You are fine, they are busted.
I don't think a man with long hair is unprofessional, as long as it's nice and net. I think a man with long hair is sexy, whether it is curly, straight, of thick.
I've gone bald now but I do miss having my thick black hair though, so please enjoy having it while it lasts. I hate the term "ethnic hair" too and I have often wonder what exactly is this so-called ethnic hair,
The fact that you are creating this dialogue is so very important. My partner is white and while he is not prejudiced, didn't have a deep understanding about the invisibility of persons of color. (Together, we later read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison) I am light skinned and growing my hair has shifted my visibility into the black world and out of the exoticism of the white world. But along with visibility in the black world comes a higher level of scrutiny re: being "black enough".
And finally, as to how to get people to take you seriously, I respect you majorly. You are one of my role models. Stop putting yourself down and stop trying to please anyone else other than yourself. As long as you're happy, no one else should matter to you.
Maybe that's just me being a naive 16 year old girl.
@4peaceluver4 I'm not putting myself down at all. I used to, but at this point I really embrace all my identities. The end of this video was kind of dramatic, yes. Really I'm just trying to highlight issues and keep people talking about them. I fully believe in an employer's right to set the standard of what's OK in their workplace, but I like this social pressure of people suddenly becoming aware that it's a terrible standard to have, and the pressure for them to change. I'm beyond happy :)
@4peaceluver4 your comments have really hit home with me. I'm definitely going to have to think about some things you've said for a little while. Thanks so much for watching my videos, and sharing your perspective with me.
Regarding hair: people judge based on first impressions, long hair (even with girls) is perceived as dirty. I don't think there is any particular reason, it just is. As to dreadlocks, those are becoming more socially acceptable. They used to be dirty, but now they're really clean.
I am a white, lower class girl, so your comment on "sea of white and wealth" offended me a bit. I know many "colored people" who are better off than I am. Please watch how you word things like that.
because I been growing my hair out too long & I'm not about to waste all that hard work, it's bee like 5+ months since I've had my hair. & I thought to myself all the times I was told to cut my hair or read that int he guidelines. Then I thought to myself, Caucasian people can have their hair long or semi-long & go to work not have to style it & it's whatever. But now if I did that, it would be looked at as "unprofessional." & I'm like that's not fair, this is the way my hair naturally is.
That's funny... in the sense I was just kinda thinking about this & dealing with this. Like I would always read over the job guidelines & they would say "cut your hair, make sure it's professional" not exactly, but around that kind of wording. & I would be like "why?" Because I recently decided to grow my hair out. I tried to put it in a s-curl the other day, but it came out poofy. & my grandma was like you gone have to get that cut. I'm like no... I'm about to get it trimmed
Hi,I'ld like to comment! I've experienced the same discrimination as well. Not to the full degree however, but I have been told what are you going to do with you hair? Mainly because of my hair length. I would usually respond saying"The same as your female employees."At my current job however I've noticed that I'm the only host required to have my hair pull back while many female hostesses wear weaves & wigs that aren't pulled back. They neglect the fact that all types of hair collects bacteria.
@popprince1 Oh wow, good for you for standing up like that. That's a horrible double standard, especially if they neglect to go after the female's the same way for reasons of sanitary nature. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Yes, be ashamed of yourself and become white. lol you are funny. Um, these are wonderful points! There's a GREAT book, please google it, called A Hair Story. It will clarify the history of African hair and it's connection to the soul. Protodreads out.
@BIGBALLSSEESALL LOL. I'm glad you find it funny :p It's a hot mess, really haha. I'm not ashamed of myself anymore, but once i changed my mode of thinking at like 9 years old, things like the way I talk have become natural to me now, and truly how i think/behave. I'm only glad that I have a family and friends(now) that believe in embracing their racial and cultural identities.
1)I think hairstyle is relative to the work environment. I would guess that men with long hair are accepted more in "non-corporate" environments..like in salons, certain retail environments, in the art/music world, etc.
2)We have to remember who set the standard for what is considered "professional" many ages ago, probably someone who is caucasian and does not have "ethnic" hair...lol
@verballyunspoken That's one thing to keep in mind that I didn't think of, because not all workplaces are equal in how people can present themselves. Someone JUST posted about a double-standard a couple comments after you.
Also, yeah I know who set the standard, but at this point in time, it definitely needs changing.
"My scar burned a little." Heh. I love you for that.
You don't have anything to worry about IMO. You're well-spoken, intelligent, and clearly principled. And the picture you held up (with the face blocked out it looked like Lenny Kravitz?) showed that long hair of a naturally kinky texture can still look publicly presentable and attactive.
Of course, I find you attractive as you are anyway. :) This is only the second video I've watched of yours, but I think you've gained a new follower. ^_^
@ingonyama70 :) I'm glad you caught that. I hope you're right. I've never personally encountered any resistance with my hair, but I've never had one of the more noticeable hairstyles when going into an interview or anything like that. I'm so so glad you like my videos! :D
I'm growing my hair out and thinking about all those things. I won't have anything to worry about since I'm beginning my own business and doing nothing corporate, but it's still a concern. Watch a video on chescalocs about deciding to get dreads. It's sort of recent so you should be able to find it. (It's month old, but only some vids ago LOL)
I have a huge afro and sometimes I wear my hair in twists and cornrows. My boss (another but older black guy) called me into his office once and suggested that I cut my hair so that people would receive me better, and as a young black man it would be good for my career. I was like, "If people can't take me professional based on my work ethic, the results I achieve, and the good work that I do, then that's their missed opportunity." He tried once again but has since changed his tune.
@xypowerpop I feel like unless a job requires a certain uniform and there are guidelines expressed about such BEFORE you agree to taking on that job; restrictions on personal appearance are bunk.
To the question of why it happens openly in current society: we've basically convinced ourselves of the post-racial climate when in truth racism has simply become internalized in a lot of people. In addition, black people have contributed I think by treating distinctives in our culture as bad things and therefore reinforcing in the mind of the Giulianis that there is nothing racist about them classifying people who have "ethnic" hair as dirty and unkempt or people who wear kinte cloth as radical.
The other day I was getting my hair cut at my barbershop that has all Black clients, to put it mildly, including myself. There was a middle aged, veteran police officer there and he was telling another man who was in his 20s and going through police training that he should shave off his beard, because it would be so intimidating to the older White officers who were testing him and they might fail him because of it. Great video I know how it feels to have to shake hands with a crummy politician
this reminded me of an article in my ethnic minority relations textbook about a black man(American born of west african descent) who has an english last name who had a DNA test done to find out his roots and found he was part english part west african descent but interestingly enough found he was also surprised to find out he is 10% asian. my point being that it is extremely rare for anybody to be 100% purely of one race. just food for thought, btw i love your videos
@KCstreets So true. I just read about some research at Tulane University proving that most White people in Louisiana have more than 1/20th "black" genetic heritage, which is strange because they STILL have laws on the books that say if you have more than 1/32nd "black" heritage, you're considered black.
the mayor is just pronouncing more of the GOP talking points we need too get them out of government they shouldn't be allowed too supervise a dog pound.
Guiliani is just one person with his own view of things. I do not see anything wrong with a persons own style. As long as they are clean ( does not matter what their skin tone is). As far as you wanting some advice on how you can look more presentable. Just stay the way you are !! Not everyone shares Guiliani's view. People should not judge others on appearance we all know that. How ever SMELL is another issue. It is not good to stink.LOL Does not matter who you are.GOD BLESS !!
Really thought-proviking Xypowerpop. Perhaps you should take this issue and put it on the news? It will certainly spark more interest and will boost your reputation.
When I see guys in nice suits and "well-groomed" hair, I often think of OCD. I think the whole look makes it seem that you have complete control of your appearance and, therefore, you must be trust-worthy enough for someone to hand over complete control of, say, their assets. So, having hair that seems somewhat free gives the impression that you aren't completely trust-worthy. Of course, I think people should wear their hair however they want, me and women alike.
@TheCrystic Interesting. At the same time, I don't think most white americans realize how much maintenance a lot of curly/"natural" hair styles are, often far FAR more than their's.
@LogicalSanity Dear LogicalSanity. Can gay people have straight hair?, or is even curly hair straight by heterosexuals? Questions that drive me crazy!
You look smart as fuck xypowerpop! I think with long hair you'd still look perfectly smart too! You just generally are, far more so than I. Dude, come over to my channel and you'll see how crazy my hair can be, I've had every colour you can ever imagine and just generally, I'm scruffy as fuck, would never be suited for a job! Much love x
@Alonzorion D'awww, thanks. I like your hair :P Though that was the first thing I noticed about you when I checked your channel out a while ago. And you look pretty dashing
I hate these limitson utube. i personally would love to grow my hair out but i fear that i would be fired/not hired at positions. i was raised with the same upbringing don't talk like those street black people my grandmother use to say and thats what i did. i notice it has taken a lot of passion out of my natural speaking voice. I believe things have changed somewhat for "colored peoples hair" in work places but for the most part there are major spaces to that uphold that whiteness standard.
Are you growing your hair now xypowerpop? It would suit you man. You're handsome young man and I think you don't need to change a fucking thing man. Just be your naturally handsome black self -self-respect is one of the most powerful weapons for black people in particular.
@wisenatts I'm not sure how much longer I want to grow it out. This length is satisfactory for me :) Thanks so much. I think as of late I've been more interested in tools for success rather than weapons for it. But sometimes there isn't too much a distinction, eh?
I agree with all of your points mr Powerpop. I personally deal with all these things and wonder about natural vs whitewashingtobesuccessul conflict. I think you said there was two people who stood up during his speech and he choose to focus on the "ethnic one"? I wish i had a better description of the guy but i got the basic gist of what you were saying. You can still be considered professional being natural (braids, fro, dreds) its your qualifications and how u do your job that should matter
There's nothing you can do...color is the only thing some people see, worrying about how to act and look is pointless (in some regard) , I am black, gay, and 95% white wash. Yes my appearance ,voice pattern and very un-urban personality gets me put in the " your not that kinda black" but at the end of the day you don't know who you are and your still not fully accepted.
Personally, I think that shorter hair that is cropped or styled is a show of good hygiene. I don't think it is something to base one's intelligence off of or to know if they are a morally sound individual or not (mainly because that is technically up to interpretation as well). I don't think that it is fair or professional to negatively comment on someone (especially in that setting) strictly based on their hair. Wear your hair long or short, it is you, not your intelligence I will look at.
This video made me remember an interesting story my mother told me. She sells insurance and she goes to sell it with a partner, and this particular customer was making comments about my mother's partner's hair. She has dreadlocks, but they're very well-kept, and that customer actually said, "You look like a black, African" (mind you my mother, and her partner are black), and then she says, "You should look more like her, she looks very European" pointing to my mother. Umm.. yeah, strange.
@holly686 oh gosh, i definitely understand that. My apologies. I'm trying to work it out of my vocabulary to describe nonwhite people. I slip up every now and again, like with this video. Thank you so much for pointing that out
@xypowerpop yea i dont care for the term ethnic either lol. to describe "ethnic" hair you can just say, kinky hair.:: types of hair are straight, wavy, curly and kinky. you hair looks curly. im sure it would grow out like corbin bleu's. you should grow your hair and start a hair journey! there is so much info about hair on the internet.
@kingsmith1991 nah, my hair doesn't grow out like that. I've had large afros before. Very different hair texture :-) But thanks for the encouragement, hah.
@holly686 `I agree, throwing 'ethnic' out of our vocabularies would already be a big relief. And personally I would like to outlaw the terms Afro-American WHite-American etc.all these oh so precise ways of describing people. It's an old habit, dividing humans in categories like white, asian, black etc, But apart from being a harmful habit, they're illogical. Non of these concepts are tenable. And XY, you know, different ethnicities can be white in the current way of thinking (Balkan wars)
@ernowe I have mixes feelings about different labels for race and ethnicities. Of course these are all socially constructed, but at the same time, if we didn't keep track of some of it - we wouldn't be able to look at, prove, or call out inequalities and injustices between perceived different groups of people. Just one reason I disagree with the French. :P
I think as a black male myself, in order to "get a foot in the door", you have to play by their rules, but when you have proven yourself and are respected, you can do what you wish with your hair as your performance has stated that you are capable. I dont think its necessarily a "white" issue... black people make the conscious decision to straighten or "upkeep" their hair. Its all about this European standard of beauty that not even they can uphold naturally most of the time.
@bobofriend I'm not sure how I feel about that double standard for that period of getting your foot in the door then. That's a hot mess. But I acknowledge the truth it in.
It being about a "European standard of beauty" definitely makes it a "white" issue, in my mind.
@xypowerpop "European standard of beauty", that way of perceiving the world no doubt still goes on with a lot of people here in the EU. But this is no longer standard, I suppose. Maybe I am living in a bubble, but I'd be surprised if my country (NL), or France or Germany, would still have a majority that feels that being black would make a person less beautiful. Need to see if there's any statistics on this, & it's long to explain & perhaps of little interest to someone in the U.S...
@xypowerpop The comment of unclejesus1 is the best I read so far. Just: 'let it grow". But of course let it grow because you feel like letting it grow. You're not seriously considering letting it grow or shave it just because you met the mayor of New York or a similar dinosaur The only thing I would consider doing after a meeting with such a shrunken soul AND his applauding audience, is throw up. Non-professional haircuts ("natural" or not) don't exist, the idea shouldn't be discussed at all!
I think if he had stopped at his initial comment then no offense taken but going on about it is just wrong and rude. So I must say I do agree with you on this one.
I worked with few older gentlemen with long hair and deadlocks, in a very professional environment. They were cool and pretty high up, so they got a way with it. I guess if you're in a ultra-conservative work place appearance is everything, and guys with short hair is acceptable. I have curly hair, which i have a hard time keeping neat, but i make it work.
@TheSapphireDragon1 Cool, thanks. I've often heard that natural hair types for people of color were ok but only after they got their foot in the door - something I'm not entirely sure how I feel about.
@xypowerpop you know what the world is changing. A couple of times my co-work came to work with braids and nobody said anything. It would often depend on the company you work for and the era i guess
I take you seriously, its more than the visual side of things. You actually have a subject matter worth talking about. I totally agree with the people treating me different with or without my hair cut.
India Arie has a line in her "I Am Not My Hair" song that goes "Good hair means curls and waves, bad hair means you like a slave. At the turn of the century it's time for us change who we be."
Viewing the natural texture of black hair as unprofessional is a remnant of plantation politics, segregation, and worldwide colonialism. Making many minorities feel that their hair would look better if it was more European.
Loved the video. Loved the clothes. Your hair is beautiful. Never liked Guiliani. To say the least, he has a history of being racially insensitive. I have a friend, an engineer, who is looking for work and wears shoulder-length dreadlocks. I was worried how he might be treated while interviewing, but so far he's received several call backs and it hasn't seemed to hurt him. So far, however, he has yet to land a job. But I can't say that is all b/c of his hair.
@Matthewgreen7779311 Why thank you :-) I'm glad to hear about your friend. Sadly, usually this issue isn't really provable in the world on an individual level, unless it's blatant. One can only look at things statistically with racism, I've come to learn.
@freitasex If you mind accuracy, we are one race by definition. To declare that there are racial groups among our species makes you a racist because you're one who subscribes to racial theory, which underwent heavy development during the 1800's and early 1900's.
@XforeverlongingX haha, if you say so. :-) I used it to bring up some existing issues. Though I'm curious to hear why you disagree. I'll read every word
Great topic. pressure to conform. Unruly black hair can be seen as a symbol of natural power and self esteem...everything the wealthy fear the lower and even middle class will obtain. We r ensnared in a net of self hate and the culture constantly creates images and judgements to keep the cycle going.
@LONGHANGINGCAPIZ I'm not sure of the wealthy fearing other people having power and self esteem anymore, maybe a couple of the old school conservatives like Giuliani, but I think people are just stoke in a mode of thinking without it being racially charged like before - but still a perpetuation of old institutionalized racism.
This shit has me pissed off! You already know since I rock my long curly everyday! HELL NO! You already know my point of view. I think black people with straight is silly. Yeah there's options but at the end of the day our hair isn't meant to be straight. That's why they have natural black people all over ads and the TV. AS for occupiers they'll take over the whole of NY soon. Fuck him! Awkward ass place for you to sit in.
@elm1230 YES. We've discussed this foolishness before. It definitely was an awkward place to sit. Not because I was surrounded by white people - but because I was surrounded by all these social conservatives and republicans. It was a hot mess of a crowd. It's weird that natural black people are all over ads and TVs, but it still isn't accepted in the workplace so much. I'd be nervous going into a job interview with the hair that I have now.
@xypowerpop Oh I didn't even notice your hair. Yes the rat race is about conforming and slavery imo. That's why I'd rather live on the street than be robbed of my individuality. No hair and clothes don't JUST make you an individual BUT it goes along way with expressing that. Honestly I would have gotten up and walked out with the hippies haha!! And to all of you saying he's reading to much into it? fuck off. He's right! This dude is a douche lord!
It's funny that you post this because idk if you know him but the rapper "Bryn't" was tweeting about long hair/ ethic hair this morning. I feel like if it is not a disturbance in the actual work place ,then it shouldn't be a problem. But society is somewhat ummm racist.
Faggot haha

@jayhaile Yes. There are different expectations for different people. Live with it, or don't, I don't care. I am white and southern. I was born with this affliction. Why is it an affliction? Because every black person i meet on the streets on a daily basis subconsciously expects me to pull my hood out of my back pocket at any given moment, and start burning a cross. True strength comes from rising above those low expectations that people set for you.

hey Darien,
Working in Corporate America can be very structured and regimented.

Because women have long hair, but they straighten or curl it and keep it nice looking..... men who have long hair it looks dirty and not clean cut, and if the man keeps it really polished looking that is viewed as feminine.... so either way long hair for men is viewed negatively in the business world.

@smoovsouljah the guy wasn't black, I don't think, but he was sort of racially ambiguous. I think it was more of a dirty hippie/occupier thing. After all, Rudy thought that welfare recipients were "like real people" in his very words.

LifeisMusic07 3 weeks ago in playlist Uploaded videos
That's funny... in the sense I was just kinda thinking about this & dealing with this. Like I would always read over the job guidelines & they would say "cut your hair, make sure it's professional" not exactly, but around that kind of wording. & I would be like "why?" Because I recently decided to grow my hair out. I tried to put it in a s-curl the other day, but it came out poofy. & my grandma was like you gone have to get that cut. I'm like no... I'm about to get it trimmed

xypowerpop 3 weeks ago
Hmmm...two things:
1)I think hairstyle is relative to the work environment. I would guess that men with long hair are accepted more in "non-corporate" environments..like in salons, certain retail environments, in the art/music world, etc.
2)We have to remember who set the standard for what is considered "professional" many ages ago, probably someone who is caucasian and does not have "ethnic" hair...lol

Its all about this European standard of beauty that not even they can uphold naturally most of the time.
bobofriend 3 weeks ago
@bobofriend I'm not sure how I feel about that double standard for that period of getting your foot in the door then. That's a hot mess. But I acknowledge the truth it in.
It being about a "European standard of beauty" definitely makes it a "white" issue, in my mind.
xypowerpop 3 weeks ago
@xypowerpop "European standard of beauty", that way of perceiving the world no doubt still goes on with a lot of people here in the EU. But this is no longer standard, I suppose. Maybe I am living in a bubble, but I'd be surprised if my country (NL), or France or Germany, would still have a majority that feels that being black would make a person less beautiful. Need to see if there's any statistics on this, & it's long to explain & perhaps of little interest to someone in the U.S...

let it grow
unclejesus1 3 weeks ago
@unclejesus1 how long? :)
xypowerpop 3 weeks ago

TheSapphireDragon1 3 weeks ago
@TheSapphireDragon1 Cool, thanks. I've often heard that natural hair types for people of color were ok but only after they got their foot in the door - something I'm not entirely sure how I feel about.
xypowerpop 3 weeks ago
@xypowerpop you know what the world is changing. A couple of times my co-work came to work with braids and nobody said anything. It would often depend on the company you work for and the era i guess

I think he was having a go at the heckler, that's all.
BTW, a good shave and a smart suit and you'll be breaking hearts.

@colmonhs Perhaps. :-) And thank you! :D

I take you seriously, its more than the visual side of things. You actually have a subject matter worth talking about. I totally agree with the people treating me different with or without my hair cut.

@csupernature Aww, well thanks. I'm glad.

Matthewgreen7779311 3 weeks ago
@Matthewgreen7779311 Why thank you :-) I'm glad to hear about your friend. Sadly, usually this issue isn't really provable in the world on an individual level, unless it's blatant. One can only look at things statistically with racism, I've come to learn.

I think you can read offensiveness into any situation like that.

Racism will always be around until we ALL have blended and have become ALL one race.
freitasex 3 weeks ago
@freitasex Not at all actually.
XforeverlongingX 3 weeks ago
@freitasex If you mind accuracy, we are one race by definition. To declare that there are racial groups among our species makes you a racist because you're one who subscribes to racial theory, which underwent heavy development during the 1800's and early 1900's.
XforeverlongingX 3 weeks ago
XY babe Im sure miss guiliani is a douchebag but I think you ran with this idea a little.
XforeverlongingX 3 weeks ago
@XforeverlongingX haha, if you say so. :-) I used it to bring up some existing issues. Though I'm curious to hear why you disagree. I'll read every word

Great topic. pressure to conform. Unruly black hair can be seen as a symbol of natural power and self esteem...everything the wealthy fear the lower and even middle class will obtain. We r ensnared in a net of self hate and the culture constantly creates images and judgements to keep the cycle going.
LONGHANGINGCAPIZ 3 weeks ago

Fuck him! Awkward ass place for you to sit in.
elm1230 3 weeks ago
@elm1230 YES. We've discussed this foolishness before. It definitely was an awkward place to sit. Not because I was surrounded by white people - but because I was surrounded by all these social conservatives and republicans. It was a hot mess of a crowd. It's weird that natural black people are all over ads and TVs, but it still isn't accepted in the workplace so much. I'd be nervous going into a job interview with the hair that I have now.
xypowerpop 3 weeks ago
@xypowerpop Oh I didn't even notice your hair. Yes the rat race is about conforming and slavery imo. That's why I'd rather live on the street than be robbed of my individuality. No hair and clothes don't JUST make you an individual BUT it goes along way with expressing that. Honestly I would have gotten up and walked out with the hippies haha!! And to all of you saying he's reading to much into it? fuck off. He's right! This dude is a douche lord!
elm1230 3 weeks ago
It's funny that you post this because idk if you know him but the rapper "Bryn't" was tweeting about long hair/ ethic hair this morning. I feel like if it is not a disturbance in the actual work place ,then it shouldn't be a problem. But society is somewhat ummm racist.
