i liked the short silence at the end of the song. it was just a few seconds but it was like the audience were stunned at how amazing it was, and damn right too...
Elbow is one of the rare bands that does absolutely everything perfectly. I have been to countless live performances and thought that the bands could have approached songs differently, or done without certain instruments, but that is never true for Elbow.
Thanks for that bytes, for me that makes the lyrics so much more deep, I can really feel the emotion in them. Think the start of the second verse is Salford skyline blue though. Makes me cry everytime.
heartbreakingly melancholic. sumptuous orchestration. engaging vocals. beautiful, beautiful music. french horn glides in like an angel on golden wings
Just listened to this whole session all the way through.......again. Gets better every time.
I remember seeing Elbow years ago in Manchester when Cast of Thousands came out and wondered if they'd ever top some of that early stuff. Apparently they just keep on getting better and better. Tear-to-the-eye stuff, every time.
after seein him talk about this song on the south bank show it has me on the verge of tears every listen. this album is every bit as good as pet sounds
This band is mature and parental in it approach but they have not taken on one gimmic to market their "thing". It just is some guys from Manchester, England cutting their garments from different fabric.
im not spoling for an argument but elbow are from bury,a town north of manchester.its just that so people from outside lancashire can understand..............l.o.l..........cheers
Didn't know Elbow much before stumbling on this concert. I am gonna get it for sure. This song is amazing. And sad for sure. Is it just me or it takes some time for people to applaud in the end? I have the feeling everybody was stunned.
I found this explanation somewhere else on the net
"wrriten and performed for the Seldom Seen Kid himself, Bryan Glancy, a Manchester singer songwriter and best friend to Guy Garvey, Elbow's lead singer.
Bryan passed away in 2007 after a sudden illness. This is Garvey's tribute to him.
Something in the way the lines "Love you mate.." are delivered is simply heartbreaking. It's not that they're twee or sugary or naff. It's because it's sung very matter of factly, and very bluntly. It's clear it's from the heart."
Stunning! hate to be picky, but i think it's Salford skyline blue',well is on the album lyrics..sorry to be picky, coz thats a beautiful song for any friend, but for one thats passed on as in the song,it's heartbreaking at stunning at same time
I feel for Guy, every time i watch this
