Must be like musicians heaven...gettin up and havin the beatles and stones singin backup!!!! Also havin the ability to sound like howlin wolf, while lookin like a puckish english schoolboy!
Very good "Negro" impersonation by Mr. Baldry. The effeminate bit is pretty interesting, too. This is the first time I ever heard Long John Baldry sing, but I had heard OF him for many, many years. Not impressed at all.
I've been reviewing a lot of material from the Billboard charts. Prior to 1955 pretty much everything white sucked donkey dicks. And the last 20 years ain't been very impressive either.
All those young white Americans in the 1960's didn't know what blues was. It was only white British bands which made them aware of it. a lot of well known american blues artists were living in povery until the Stones, Animals and others covered them and they got the royalties from their records, which white American producers had cheated them out of. See what BB King says the difference was after Eric Clapton mentioned his name in a TV interview. And BB thought that Peter Green was the best.

@ronwhycherly I saw Buddy Guy perform in February. During his show he gave a short lesson on blues history. When he mentioned the boys from England hearing blues and doing their own version, someone in the audience yelled "they fucked it up!". Buddy corrected him: "They didn't mess it up, they let you know who we were!"
@EFISHANT If Muddy Waters was racist, perhaps he might have. Otherwise he probably just enjoyed the homage, the talent, and the fact his career was revived as a direct result of people like Long John Baldry and the Beatles.
The Rolling Stones weren't involved in this show. It's the Beatles in the audience, plus the female vocal group The Vernons Girls on stage backing him on this. (The musical group is Sounds Incorporated).

@squanto2 Long John Baldry was openly gay. He is a legend in many ways and in no way is an imitation of a 'Negro' singer.

@TehLAWL1 That was part of the skit. Otherwise why do you think they had the camera aimed at Baldry just as he "heckled" the guys?

Muddy must have wanted to kill himself when white guys were getting famous singing stuff like this.
John had a great voice but the arrangement with the back up singers........HORRIFYING!
