Gary Lam is a great master, but his wing chun is modified... no footwork at all... it's very easy defeat a weak student that only attacks with straight wing chun punches, with no force, no power and slowly... against a real pugilist expert all these techniques doesn't work right. defeating this wing chun is very simple using blind side footwork and round attacks. Anyway good master, not so good technique.
@robyhh You would probably find he is so grounded he doesnt need to go dancing round the place. the guy is like a ships anchor. But his footwork is probably fine. Ive seen his students move around. the footwork is such a huge part of WC. but its not like karate where you lunge in and out looking for one big hit.
@robyhh - I studied William Cheung wing chun too. I looked into this "Modified" and "Original". Check out old videos of Yip Man doing stuff. It looks like what you would call "Modified". So actually what we call modified is actually the original wing chun. Wiliam Cheung is the only one teaching it differently. He changed wing chun. Which doesn't mean it's bad. Maybe he improved it in some ways. But he definitely changed it. So this talk of other styles being "modified" is propaganda.
You'd be surprised how good this works against a "pugilist expert". Don't mix up demonstration with fighting. Do you really think just because there are - given - many bad wing chun practioners trying to make a buck out of wing chuns reputation, that this system would have survived if it did not work at all? Round attacks? OMG - yeah, once smart people found out that wing chun prefers straight lines, they think walking across the bow is the answer - how dumb can one get???@robyhh
@robyhh Sorry, but it is the Wing Chun YOU are talking about that is modified, not Gary Lam's. A true exponent of the art lets the nature of the incoming force decide whether he ends up on the in- or outside. Trying to place yourself somewhere actively will mean you risk losing contact and thus control. And he does not attack with only straight punches, he lets the situation dictate. A punch turns into something else if it meets resistance, but WHAT it turns into depends on the incoming force.
People who do not recognize Lam's technique as genuine, obviously, know nothing about combat or martial arts training. Their doubt displays their ignorance. Anyone who knows anything real, can recognize the fact that your typical opponent, not trained in high level martial arts would be destroyed by these techniques. End of story.
Well .... that could be true it might also not be.... Lets look at Wing Chun? It is a science not just brute force fighting system .... your right the guy isn't putting pressure on Gary here ... but if he did ..... he might lose his head .... believe me go find a wing chun guy that's practice a few years that willing to spar. If hes good he will use your brute force attack against you. I will admit I have felt my brothers boxing punch which is harder then any I've encountered in Wing Chun.
Both hands must help each other - one hand attacks, the other defends or assists.
Attack with what's available - use your elbows and shoulders if you're in range and would be more efficient. The amount of power you exert on your opponent depends on how you focus.
Really, this can apply to many other styles as well.
Anyone can look like they know what there doing. When the other guy is allowing himself to be a human dummy. To all you suckers that think these moves work. Wait till you try them on someone that is going to try and take your head off.
I learned so much...awesome seminar!! We'll miss Lam Sifu for 6 weeks while he gives seminars in Europe, but we'll be training hard. It was also cool to meet Peter Hsu, Sam Halim, and Greg's students from Oakland who made the trip down. We got to take some "family" pics after the seminar. :)
