The sword Trunks uses was given to him by Tapion in the movie Dragon Ball Z: The Wrath of The Dragon so technically they're using the same sword, just in different timelines.

That was... totally the wrong timeline, though. Of course, the DBZ movies are probably a third timeline completely independant of the main timeline and future timeline. It's best to just try not to make sense of it at all.
