Syria does lease the Tartus naval base to the Russian Navy and are solid trading partners so Russia does have at least some interest in Syria.
But just today Russia submitted a Resolution to the UN asking Assad to step down, so it looks like Russian support is also wavering for Syria.

Iran has applied to join the S.C.O twice but has been so far declined each time. Iran does however have observer status within the S.C.O, but it doesn't grant them mutual defense agreements nor trade agreements.

@airborne4lf To my knowledge Syria and Russia don't have a formal alliance nor do they have a mutual assistance pact, therefore Russia has no legal obligation to defend Syria in the event of foreign aggression. Syria does lease the Tartus naval base to the Russian Navy and are solid trading partners so Russia does have at least some interest in Syria.
But just today Russia submitted a Resolution to the UN asking Assad to step down, so it looks like Russian support is also wavering for Syria.

@airborne4lf They do have an alliance. Russia, China and few former Soviet countries are part of the S.C.O which is similar to NATO (but not as aggressive). Iran has applied to join the S.C.O twice but has been so far declined each time. Iran does however have observer status within the S.C.O, but it doesn't grant them mutual defense agreements nor trade agreements.
It's too bad NATO is such a bully because nations like Iran get caught in the middle of geopolitical agendas and get screwed.
