this movie showed what kids can do if they stand up people did not khnow what realy bad kid was back then that dick head cop sould had stayed of it cops think they got the power over all people if they started to put every one behind bars how our they going to get paid
It looks like I'm the guy that's gonna say that this movie is one of the key inflences that Nirvana used to bring out the rebellious side of the video, "It Smells Like Teen Spirit"....I too have watched it on the 'Max' before the Sundance and IFC channels on your cable screen...good performances...thanx Matt Dillon and Mr. Kaplan!!!. So all of you 1980's-retro-appreciation generation kids of today that love today's latest craze...need to see why (and where) this movie influences you.
I saw this movie on YouTube a few days ago and I though it was going to be crazier! There not that bad! I've seen WAY worst behavior! This movie is great but not OVER THE EDGE kind of thing-.-
First saw this in mid 80's. Cinemax showed it everyday for a month. I'd watch it everyday with my brother and a couple of friends. I was really young and had forgotten about it. Then one day years later I hear the song, "Surrender" and this movie instantly popped into my head. A few years after that I'm watching Boyz N The Hood and the song, "Ooh Child" plays as young Doughboy is getting arrested and this movie again popped into my head. Amazing how music can trigger memory.
@backyardbread Classic! And imagine that... Robert Downey, jr in an 80's teen movie. I would love to know why he wasn't part of the cast in The Outsiders.
@muchohumpty You have your opinion I have mine I like this film you don't but come on the scene where the kids break stuff and sets stuff on fire is better than the scenes with The warriors fighting other gangs so shutup why do you hate the film because there is no gangs oh or do you think that people would watch The Warriors execpet this film those kids were working so hard for the film if it wasn't for this film the kids would have not became famouse jerk
@Lfdjake91 do you think you would like it now..as a GROWNUP!!!!!! argghh...I just turned 47..I was 15 when It was made ..(not released?) I dont wanna grow up....
Put a shit fuck ton of money into anything, big rich mainstream song, tons of well paid extras and expensive locations and big budget mother fucking shit and the mindless fucking masses will flock to it... by the way, I am fucking pissed off right now. Been making movies for 14 years and haven't gotten where I wanted yet.
Loved this as a teenager. Love the hostility shown to authority, as a teen that is. The scene where Matt Dillon gets shot is a classic case of shitty acting.
I was only seven when this movie came out, so I first saw it on late night t.v when I was eighteen and I really loved it at the time, being as it is about rebellion and all that, I took it seriously. Now as a 38 year old, I own the dvd and still watch it, but it's more for kitsch value than anything else...and the awesome soundtrack. Oh, and Matt Dillon and that incredible hair! Any woman worth her salt would've been jealous of that hair.
there some not right with the grown up back in the 80s they where called that back then but i called them ass holes back then i m 37 year i dont think as my self as a grown would nvere ever wanted to be one i just wanted to be old a nife by law to do what i wanted
@jityr2 Probably not because they don't know what fun is. They would most likely say it'd suck, what could you do? I wouldn't be surprised to hear a kid say, "That must have sucked to have to walk to a friends house to see if they were home." I wonder if kids even know what a busy signal is on a telephone.
this movie was government propaganda piece put out in 1979 to help elect Ronny Regan. It's mission was to scare old people into electing a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize criminals, and rule the country like a king.
@bblokes maybe-but this movie was pretty realistic, thats the way it was where i lived-we used to get high in the houses under construction, or the model homes-we used to hang at the rec center-we just never took over and torched the school-but that school was just like ours-the "open concept" school
@bblokes Horseshit. The film spoke more about what happens when you neglect kids in favor of commerce. Its like the opposite of what you wrote. Did you see the film?
@bblokes I actually think the movie genuinely sympathized with both the young teenagers and their parents, albeit in a misguided way. That was the era of "maybe we're being too tough on our kids, we need to listen to them, try to understand them, etc., or maybe something like this (i.e. the movie's ending) will happen." Of course, that misguidedness left a whole generation of kids screwed up and utterly unprepared for the adult world, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions, right?
This movie Is my hands-down favorite ever! My dad put it on to occupy me and my best friend cuz we were being too loud, and now whenever we're together, we watch it. It means so much to us! This is OUR movie, ever since we were 11! One of the best movies to come out of 1979! The other was The Warriors, directed by Walter Hill. Google it, it's a cult classic!
@LovesTheWarriors yeah, i'm pretty sure the jail bus at the end actually drove all the way to New York and these kids formed the Van Cortlandt Rangers.
@Alphabex8 thanks, i literally know EVERYTHING about that movie. it was a favorite of my dads, and he made me watch it when i was like, 8 , and its been my favorite ever since,.
@PMNS1995 1. The Warriors 2. The Gramercy Riffs 3. The Rouges 4. The Turnbull A.C.s 5. The Orphans 6. The Lizzies 7. The Punks 8. The Baseball Furies 9. The Soho Hi-Hats 10. @Sylvania49 This movie is based on a 1973 article in the San Francisco Examiner about Foster City, CA, in the early 70's. I lived there, I was one of those kids.
@Sylvania49 The movie included a lot of artistic license but living in Foster City, in 1970 was much like the movie. We'd party and go to "the rec". Foster City was a new "planned" community with new neighborhoods being built enmass. We'd break into the new homes just completed and use them as a party house; when the security guard or cops came, we'd run and hide and make a game out of it.
@Sylvania49 I gave you the PG version. Didn't mention things like rolling down the street at night on bikes, knocking off car rear view mirrors and antennas, joy riding in our parents car, etc. We were indeed delinquints. Most of us survived to become upright citizens and honorable members of the community.
I kind of chuckle at todays youth. they think they are doing radical stuff like it's never been done before - HA! Been there, done that!
This is the Best teen angst movie out there. This is when movies were good unlike the movies now.People wouldn't dare make movies like this now because of the pc crap, which I just think is fuckin' stupid there are no movies that are REAL to actually teens. That is why this movie is a classic because it is Real!

Great movie, watched it about every time it was on HBO. It definitely brings back memories of my teenage years. Great Soundtrack, I don't think the soundtrack ever got released on an album, wish it had.
@Castaril Because people have lost originality, they want to make films complex as shit, instead of something so simple that makes it complicated, its shit that they dont do films like this...

Checked IMDB and the last thing he did was in 2000. Some TV show I've never heard of. Also says he played a TV reporter in the movie "Dick", in '99.

Why don't they make movies like this anymore?
Castaril 2 years ago 18
@Castaril because now a days Hollywood is just interested in making money and not making good films.
PLUS kids are way to into Computer generated stuff and after effects.
I love this movie beyond belief!
I actually named my Rottweiler "Richie White"

@Castaril because they are too busy making shit remakes of every film ever made

@Castaril Because people have lost originality, they want to make films complex as shit, instead of something so simple that makes it complicated, its shit that they dont do films like this...
