I think that the violin and cello are given more 'publicity' or whatever you want to call it because they have more extremes in terms of sound (but the bass is too low to be very popular). That's why I think that sopranos are preferred over altos in opera as well--it's about the extremes in your voice/instrument and having a sound not many others can have. That's just my unbiased opinion. I play violin and the headmistress at my old music school tried to convince me to play viola...not my style!
