Okay. First of all, I work for an american hospital that has a really nice Midwife program. Second off all, I see patients like this sometimes. It's not saying that all patients are like this. This 'patient' was in an emergant situation and needed a c-section. (And yes, we call it a c-section outside tv and movies.) Also, if a pt has honestly had 5 previous c-sections are you really going to ok a VBAC? How is that even safe? And not all pts with birthplans are like this. Most are very reasonable
its not the caesarean sections that im mad about, in fact i have supported many women through LUSCS and still managed to make the birth a rewarding experience. in australia, we have midwifery-led programs(in hospitals), that actually promote normal labour and birth, whereas america is OBGYN at one end of the spectrum or go out and find your own private midwife. wheres the happy medium?
This is an almost verbatim account of an actual patient's labor. Fortunately, this is an extreme exception, but this patient actually said "quit pushing on my baby's chest" while the neo team was performing CPR. Most patients have more reasonable birth plans. By the way, the phrase "caesarean section" is a tautology. It probably comes from the Latin word "to cut," and therefore the phrase "caesarean section" means "to cut, to cut." I prefer "Cesarean/Caesarean delivery." Best wishes.
ps. the american maternity set up is terrible, come over to australia and learn how to practice like real doctors and midwives. and call it a CAESAREAN SECTION OR LUSCS NOT A C-SECTION. we are not in a movie and its not greys anatomy.
@kfinnigan2505 not sure why the vitriol. Australia has a Caesarean rate over 30%, just like the U.S. Having midwives does not seem to be helping lower the rate.
@TheOBDOC although the stats may be the same, the way in which the care is delivered to the women in australia is far better. your maternal and neonatal mortality/morbidity rates are terrible. worse than countries like Cuba is hear? we have women-centred care instilled into our training and most of the doctors consult with the midwives on what they think is best for the woman and make their plans based on that information. although this topic has nothing to do with the video above (lol)
@kfinnigan2505 I do and I'm sorry if I came across as being overly defensive, but this is a buisness I've seen from a young age. My mother started working on the same Maternity floor I now work on when I was five years old, well over twenty years ago. I've been on the floor for seven years now and I love what I do.
as an experienced midwife, i find this video to be a complete insult to midwifery practice and natural birth. i do see the "funny" point that this video is trying to make, but it is not achieving its goal. in no real circumstance would this ever occur. everyone is caught up on the bullshit that is coming out of the womens mouth, but no one is listening to how the obstetrician talks to the woman.
This is SO not true. While I know there are a few women out there that I'm sure are like that the vast majority of women who want a VBAC are NOT this stupid. We/They don't want to risk their baby dieing just to get what they want. OB's are lazy and impatient This has been proven time and time again. C-section is a life saving thing. But it has been abused. My first was needed to save me. My second was not. I and the baby were fine.
