@stang217 , actually, i think (know) the reason that spain, italy, france, england, etc. have good leagues is because they pay a lot for players, it doesn't have to do with the climate, but rather more with the money...but yeah, i'm american too, but it has nothing to do with the climate
@CashSmeller The reason why is because the US and Canada don't see soccer the way Europe, Latin America and the rest of the world sees it. Especially the US, with it's dipping economy. The NFL, NBA and NHL are okay but they're not big outside. The MLS can be somewhat of a monetary savior for the US if we focused on it. More focus -> more money -> more well known players -> bigger payoff.

It'll be interesting to see how the USA do against England in Group C too. I'm from England, so obviously i'm hoping for a 9-0 win, but in a different climate, who knows?
Actually he did pretty good at Bayern Munich. He got 4 goals in his first 5 games but they were friendlies. When the league games started back up he didn't get starts and only got a few subs worth 15 minutes here and there.
I am sure he could have done more if he was given more time during league play.
Friendly's don't count. Haha. That's like saying "He looked decent in training". We'll see if he can handle the pace of the English game, I hope he does well, because i'm a fan, but I think he's a big fish in a small pond in the MLS. He could be well out of his depth in the Premier League.

he tried to play in europe in englands championship league and didnt make it so he decided to be a stud and stay in mls lol. idk really he shuld try for another european league
WHAT THE FUCK GUATEMALAN.....it's okay there is no good player from your shitty country but donovan never scored with bayern.GET YOUR SHIT RIGHT ASSHOLE HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
AsianGlory....theres a new kid that is so much better then donavon. he can play any position and dominate... He just doesn't get recognition. He plays like a Messi.
playing at a good club in america is costly... somewhere between 10-20k a year, ive even heard 30k... so it weeds out minorities bc majority cant even earn that much within a yr. the best solution would be for the MLS to change their policies... do away w/ the draft, etc... and then clubs within the mls will be forced to build through academies (most mls clubs hav academies, but they are not necessarily as strong as the oligarchic private clubs funded by the status quo (those who can afford it)
until capt'listic soccer club owners end...and start to build clubs based on merit...and more interest stirs up, american soccer will never reach its potential. I cant help but count the numerous untapped talent that plays in Hispanic leagues across cities indoors or outdoors... or other ethnic minorities... which will remain the same, until a true rev occurs within this country beginning with local clubs and continuin to the Men's NT. THERE IS A LOT OF BULLS*** POLITICS IN AMERICAN NAT'L TM..
lol.... ummm.....freddy adu (btw 5'7'' is not his height hes at least 5'5'' ive seen him in person)... donovan (5'7''-5'8'', technically avg height, but in the sporting world & depending on the league its different)... LMAO since wen has height ever mattered in soccer. Its one of the unique sports where height or weight (for the most part) dont matter as long as u have talent!
well it would depend if youre in a europe team and defence's are tall well a hispanic forward will not get any header goals but as a winger or a middle field well mibe
Messi is an exception...height matters to teams that play a European style (like US) 'cause there are more long passes in the air that require good headers of the ball...and matters on set pieces too...Mexico needs a tall forward desperately
NO thats what they play into your head in AMERICA; BIGGER, STRONGER & FASTER along w/ the defensive mentality. We think that we are playing EURO STYLE (germany or english). We are fooling ourselves. Spain doesnt play European style? Every country has its own style, Germany and English football very similar, but they still have their distinct differences. Yet, in Europe you play as long as your talented. Height is the bullcrap they feed you in America. Thats why we have so many ogers w/o talent.
I meant....that in the history of football, there has been plenty of players that havent had size...and been a target forward, centerback or goalie...
ok i see what your saying but you mis understood what i said. all i meant was size helps in those postions and doesnt really help much in any other postion. i never said those 3 postions needed size only that size can very much help.
now these players may not be world class but heres some examples. A.moreno who plays targe forword for the crew, j,bush goalie who plays for the fire and m.parkhurst who used to play for the revs but now plays in denmark.
Then our talented players (usually minorities...cant afford these club fees, travel fees, and etc...) so they never gain the exposure or potential training for their true talent. SOCCER IN AMERICA IS A BYPRODUCT OF THE WHITE YUPPIE MOVT... MIDDLE CLASS PARENTS TRYING TO MAKE ACT MORE EUROPEANIZED SEND THEIR KIDS TO PLAY THIS SPORT. another problem is the best athletes play BASKETBALL & FOOTBALL! Kobe said it best, imagine Team USA Basketball playing soccer... Our feeder programs suck here...
The problem in America is the same thing that built this country...capt'lism.... b/c the white middle class or higher classes are the only ones that can afford to send their unfortunately avg or subpar children into soccer. These kids get the main advantage of continuin to play with the best clubs or teams... so even though they are avg, they become a lot better than kids that hav that natural instinct. WE NEED ACADEMIES!!!! Freidal is starting one..that seems fairly based on merit.
how is it possible that only middle class families can manage to send their kids to play football. ..the UK is a capitalist state however money does not matter when it comes to nurturing young talent....it's practically free to join a big club, u just have clubs holding trials for players from community teams which are picked up by talent scounts..the ones sucesful get to join the clubs jr academy n progresses slowly. its quite shocking to read wots happenin over there..
THere are no academy programs... they are slowly starting to sprout up (this is the main problem). most clubs unlike the UK dont look to invest into their players for the future possibilities of the kids becoming professionals (where there is money to be made, by transferring players, merchandise sales...etc). MLS itself has awful transferrin policies that hinder it from growing. In america, its basically those who can afford to send their kids the best clubs will see the best results.
god, get off his dick ppl... once again a failure in Europe! He scored in Exibition games (meaningless goals)... honestly there are so many better american players... Rossi (wait he plays for Italy), McBride (a true legend), spector, etc...
Quit playin the jealousy card, just look at his track record, all decent or good American players have at least played a few good years in Europe. He hasnt & part of it has to do with his attitude (unfortunately too many of u are on his dick too see clearly)
jon spector... illinois grown... played for great club program; Sockers FC... signed by man u at 18 (along w/ rossi) etc... still remains in the EPL...
like we suppose 2 care wot west ham fans think...they wouldn't rate him ne way..they r west ham fans....West ham is a shit team ne way...ur lucky u got zola
yeah...the US, im sorry whats the best they've done at a world cup? 26 isn't THAT young by the way, especially if you look at how you talent gets signed in European clubs. I'm not arguing with the "results" because he isn't actually producing any lately...
It's the MLS offseason, and he's scored a few goals with Bayern Munich already, so I'm thoroughly convinced you don't know what you're talking about. In '02 the US made it to the quarterfinals in the WC and Donovan turned heads and played a huge role. The 06 was a huge disappointment although we were the only team not to lose to champions Italy. The US does need to step it up as a team to consistently produce big results on the big stage, then they'll get the respect and credit they deserve.
because 90% of the people who say america suck... just hate everything american in general.
If the USA won the world cup in 2010 the world would come up with the most stupid of excuses... lucky break, bad games by good teams, bad referee blah blah blah.
its sad that politics have krept into such a beautiful game...
i'm not going to bash the mls because football is a young sport in the us, i will say is that even though Donovan moved to europe (us players need to do to improve the level of football ) he moved to a mediocre league and cant get a start. until us players get regular games in the top leagues (Serie A, la liga, premier league) the game in the us is going nowhere. for a start the msl should introduce a relegation system unlike other sports in the us which reward bad teams with top draft picks!
I agree with some of your input. But the drafts are to make teams better and to build future stars. It's worked though our sports systems. I love the idea because this is the way we go about building teams and players, it's an American sports tradition. We dont need the Euro or futbol ways, we have our method! N.America is the capital of sports, we know how to do things in the sports world. We have 8mil kids playing soccer as we speak, only England is second with 3 mil! We r getting there.
But your thinking way to far ahead... we need to work on our youth leagues first... only kids that have money for lessons play... drastically reducing the number of raw talent joining the clubs.
Im a youth coach, and some of the national team coaches blatantly accused us of not producing talent.
Which is true...
There are so many kids playing in the U.S, if we improve training and seriousness of the youth leagues, better players will be produced as a product
i agree with your sentiment, here in England the FA calls it "grass roots" building the game from the bottom up. but in the US your in a catch 22, you need good young talent getting into football but to do that they need good players to look up to, it not going to be easy because your young talent has a lot of competition for other sports, here in the uk its football or football lol.
Thats so true... I tell my players to watch MLS and watch the Premier league... or any major european league... because thats another problem. The kids work hard at training... then go home and supporter the Lakers. They dont have geniune hereo's.
What im saying is, their needs to be more commitment and passion. But its hard whenn their are 3 other major sports. Thats why unfortunatly like my coaches told me... i tell the guys you have to choose one loyalty... u cant have them all.
The draft thing does NOT work in the MLS, because the rookies that come in dont make an impact anyway... their are stick out players in our pros but their no STAND outs. Like a Ronaldo or Kaka... major impact players.
MLS does not have to be as big and powerful as La liga or the Premier... but if it can be above average... that will be a dream come true.
And we will then be producing players good enough to compete in europe.
One reason why the MLS does not do that... is because their really isnt enough teams. For example in the English system yall have like 60+ teams... and several stages/division until the Premier. Here we have one division, and one semi pro division... which is really a reserve division for the major teams.
You guys can get away with that because of fan support. Its the same way with baseball.. several teams several divisions.
yeah i understand that but until a relegation system is in place your lower leagues won't improve. with the money that's in place through tv rights and sponsors it big business and the big teams will keep getting bigger and the small teams will get nowhere fast it just creates a divide with the haves and have not's. relegation spreads the wealth financially and with experience. a semi pro team might go up for just a year say but the year after the money they have might keep them going for years.
but until investors are willing to invest in more teams... the idea is not practical.
People wont go watch teams until the teams get better... which means the players have to get better... which leads me to my first point.
That and their needs to be more soccer literate people in the states... i can tell you that lik 50% of ticket sales are for first time soccer supporters... just going to see "what its all about" and then they never return...
what your idea mainly does is increase competition and variation... it does affect the overal league skill and "what not" but not as dramatically as we would like to think.
This is why only 4 teams have one the Premeir league... and the same 7 or 8 teams get rotated between first and second leagues.
What the draft does is make sure every team has a "chance", as well as prevent the same few teams from winning every single year. It works in our other major sports.
cougar, i'm glad there's one other american who knows what they're talking about! Landon Donovan is Bruce Arena's pretty boy and has no talent whatsoever. if he's america's best...god help us! that would also explain the world cup performances every year. Hey I got a good idea, how bout you learn the game? The only slight glimmers of american talent in the MLS for forwards are Ching and Twellman. Thats just about it. How are they stuck here while Donovan rides benchs abroad? SOMETHING's WRONG!!!
He is the 4th youngest player in the world ever to reach 100 caps for his national team and is the all time leading scorer for the US, and he's only 26. And he missed a huge chunk of last season and still finished with the most goals and a ton of assists. He might not have the skills of Messi but he fights like a champ. You can't argue with results.
MLS needs to restructure its current season format with there long 5 month breaks....why cant they just run it like the europeans do ....same exact format...with breaks in winter....some of the players look dead during the June and July summer of the States...and i went to a few games in the summer i just cant sit there with that heat...almost faited once ...this is y the best players would rather be in europe ....r u reading this MLS...
Hey guys, iam from munich. As i heard about the rental of Donovan i was not sure if its a good decision. But he made, not only because of the football, but also because of his character a great addition to the game. His technique is incredible, his pace is outstanding in Bayern and for his size his headers are lethal!
I hope Bayern takes the option to buy him if he proofs his abilities and iam going to buy a Jersey of him for sure in sommer!
He scored twice in the last 2 preparation games! Cant wait to see more of him next week
when the winterbreak finishes. Bayern needs a fast paced player like him. He´s ambitious and couragious to come back for a second try over here in Germany. I hope he kicks Podolskis ass all the way back to Cologne!!
Donovan was a kid when he played in Germany. Yes alot of good players do well for club teams at a young age, like Lionel Messi, but I'm not comparing him to players like that, nor is anyone else.I think he will do well because Bayern Munich could use a pacy attacking midfielder to run in between Klose and Toni. Being around and playing against such great players will do him some good and It will increase his composure.
hes on loan...he wont do shit and come home crying like a lil bitch wanting some of his la galaxy teamates to suck his dick and kiss his forehead...hes garbage
You are right he need to stay in MLS. Money is not a lot but more fun, better food better roads, Toilet paper, running water, and the best: he do not have to put up with AZZHOLES...
arrealwhip, mls will never be the most powerful league it hasnt even got a 2nd division if anything the mls will prduce great players who will come to europe just like the brazilian league
Donovans a great player i wish he could come to the premier league and play for a team like everton or villa
Celtic are scottish the scottish league is just as good as the mls put dc united up against an english side like wigan they will lose or put them up to a side from italy like chievo or spanish like getafe
the united states has a long way to come before being a successful league the only reason europe knows of the mls is because of beckham, plus are you sure dc united didnt beat celtic in a pre season friendly
the MLS is not very good. but i can only hope donovan proves people like that VVV wrong by playing well in germany. he has proved he isnt garbage by his international perfomances.
I hope he goes to Europe and does well,as for people saying MLS is shit, well I'm American and it isnt up to par with the rest of the world, but its hasn't even been 15 years people, imagine the other leagues when they were young, why do people say things like mls is shity?everyone knows it dosent have great players or anything of that nature. But to make fun of the league is dumb in my eyes and makes me wonder why there is so much hatred in the comments,
Landon is officially a Bayer Munich memeber! And ready to play Champions League! With Reberi and Toni and the rest of BM, there is no doubt these players will make him even better. VIVA BAYERN MUNICH!!!;) USA BABY!
Thats good, the only good thing about the mls is it has good tie with the epl. The Mexican league isnt bad, but it is hard for mexican players to leave the mexican league. so that is a major plus of playing in the mls, but then again, its the mls.
yeah, i got a friend playing in the MLS and he said after a few years he's ganna go to Europe to improve his game. i wanna do the same thing. The MLS is a good way to start.
GO LANDON!

playing at a good club in america is costly... somewhere between 10-20k a year, ive even heard 30k... so it weeds out minorities bc majority cant even earn that much within a yr. the best solution would be for the MLS to change their policies... do away w/ the draft, etc... and then clubs within the mls will be forced to build through academies (most mls clubs hav academies, but they are not necessarily as strong as the oligarchic private clubs funded by the status quo (those who can afford it)
nfizzle7 2 years ago 3
until capt'listic soccer club owners end...and start to build clubs based on merit...and more interest stirs up, american soccer will never reach its potential. I cant help but count the numerous untapped talent that plays in Hispanic leagues across cities indoors or outdoors... or other ethnic minorities... which will remain the same, until a true rev occurs within this country beginning with local clubs and continuin to the Men's NT. THERE IS A LOT OF BULLS*** POLITICS IN AMERICAN NAT'L TM..
nfizzle7 2 years ago 2
most hispanics are talented but just too small to play at the professional level

Lionel Messi is short and he's one of the best in the world.
MEX77GDL 2 years ago 3
lol.... ummm.....freddy adu (btw 5'7'' is not his height hes at least 5'5'' ive seen him in person)... donovan (5'7''-5'8'', technically avg height, but in the sporting world & depending on the league its different)... LMAO since wen has height ever mattered in soccer. Its one of the unique sports where height or weight (for the most part) dont matter as long as u have talent!
nfizzle7 2 years ago
well it would depend if youre in a europe team and defence's are tall well a hispanic forward will not get any header goals but as a winger or a middle field well mibe
luis131933 2 years ago
Messi is an exception...height matters to teams that play a European style (like US) 'cause there are more long passes in the air that require good headers of the ball...and matters on set pieces too...Mexico needs a tall forward desperately
pem82sox 2 years ago
NO thats what they play into your head in AMERICA; BIGGER, STRONGER & FASTER along w/ the defensive mentality. We think that we are playing EURO STYLE (germany or english). We are fooling ourselves. Spain doesnt play European style? Every country has its own style, Germany and English football very similar, but they still have their distinct differences. Yet, in Europe you play as long as your talented. Height is the bullcrap they feed you in America. Thats why we have so many ogers w/o talent.

no size only matter in 3 postions, target forward, centerback and goalie
kronz21 2 years ago

nfizzle7 2 years ago
wait, what are you trying to say.
kronz21 2 years ago
I meant....that in the history of football, there has been plenty of players that havent had size...and been a target forward, centerback or goalie...
nfizzle7 2 years ago
ok i see what your saying but you mis understood what i said. all i meant was size helps in those postions and doesnt really help much in any other postion. i never said those 3 postions needed size only that size can very much help.
now these players may not be world class but heres some examples. A.moreno who plays targe forword for the crew, j,bush goalie who plays for the fire and m.parkhurst who used to play for the revs but now plays in denmark.
kronz21 2 years ago
Our feeder programs suck here...
nfizzle7 2 years ago
The problem in America is the same thing that built this country...capt'lism.... b/c the white middle class or higher classes are the only ones that can afford to send their unfortunately avg or subpar children into soccer. These kids get the main advantage of continuin to play with the best clubs or teams... so even though they are avg, they become a lot better than kids that hav that natural instinct. WE NEED ACADEMIES!!!! Freidal is starting one..that seems fairly based on merit.
nfizzle7 2 years ago
how is it possible that only middle class families can manage to send their kids to play football. ..the UK is a capitalist state however money does not matter when it comes to nurturing young talent....it's practically free to join a big club, u just have clubs holding trials for players from community teams which are picked up by talent scounts..the ones sucesful get to join the clubs jr academy n progresses slowly. its quite shocking to read wots happenin over there..
tenseman08 2 years ago
THere are no academy programs... they are slowly starting to sprout up (this is the main problem). most clubs unlike the UK dont look to invest into their players for the future possibilities of the kids becoming professionals (where there is money to be made, by transferring players, merchandise sales...etc). MLS itself has awful transferrin policies that hinder it from growing. In america, its basically those who can afford to send their kids the best clubs will see the best results.
nfizzle7 2 years ago 2
god, get off his dick ppl... once again a failure in Europe!
He hasnt & part of it has to do with his attitude (unfortunately too many of u are on his dick too see clearly)
nfizzle7 2 years ago

Wonderbread101 2 years ago
yeah...the US, im sorry whats the best they've done at a world cup? 26 isn't THAT young by the way, especially if you look at how you talent gets signed in European clubs. I'm not arguing with the "results" because he isn't actually producing any lately...
egkopite77 2 years ago
It's the MLS offseason, and he's scored a few goals with Bayern Munich already, so I'm thoroughly convinced you don't know what you're talking about. In '02 the US made it to the quarterfinals in the WC and Donovan turned heads and played a huge role. The 06 was a huge disappointment although we were the only team not to lose to champions Italy. The US does need to step it up as a team to consistently produce big results on the big stage, then they'll get the respect and credit they deserve.
Wonderbread101 2 years ago
the usa will never get the respect they deserve
because 90% of the people who say america suck... just hate everything american in general.
If the USA won the world cup in 2010 the world would come up with the most stupid of excuses... lucky break, bad games by good teams, bad referee blah blah blah.
its sad that politics have krept into such a beautiful game...
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
i'm not going to bash the mls because football is a young sport in the us, i will say is that even though Donovan moved to europe (us players need to do to improve the level of football ) he moved to a mediocre league and cant get a start. until us players get regular games in the top leagues (Serie A, la liga, premier league) the game in the us is going nowhere. for a start the msl should introduce a relegation system unlike other sports in the us which reward bad teams with top draft picks!
andyjhwelch 3 years ago
I agree with some of your input. But the drafts are to make teams better and to build future stars. It's worked though our sports systems. I love the idea because this is the way we go about building teams and players, it's an American sports tradition. We dont need the Euro or futbol ways, we have our method! N.America is the capital of sports, we know how to do things in the sports world. We have 8mil kids playing soccer as we speak, only England is second with 3 mil! We r getting there.
hushg2000 2 years ago
hey respect your comment!
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
i agree with your sentiment, here in England the FA calls it "grass roots" building the game from the bottom up. but in the US your in a catch 22, you need good young talent getting into football but to do that they need good players to look up to, it not going to be easy because your young talent has a lot of competition for other sports, here in the uk its football or football lol.
andyjhwelch 2 years ago
Thats so true... I tell my players to watch MLS and watch the Premier league... or any major european league... because thats another problem. The kids work hard at training... then go home and supporter the Lakers. They dont have geniune hereo's.
What im saying is, their needs to be more commitment and passion. But its hard whenn their are 3 other major sports. Thats why unfortunatly like my coaches told me... i tell the guys you have to choose one loyalty... u cant have them all.
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
The draft thing does NOT work in the MLS, because the rookies that come in dont make an impact anyway... their are stick out players in our pros but their no STAND outs. Like a Ronaldo or Kaka... major impact players.
MLS does not have to be as big and powerful as La liga or the Premier... but if it can be above average... that will be a dream come true.
And we will then be producing players good enough to compete in europe.
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
On your last comment to do with relegation.
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
yeah i understand that but until a relegation system is in place your lower leagues won't improve. with the money that's in place through tv rights and sponsors it big business and the big teams will keep getting bigger and the small teams will get nowhere fast it just creates a divide with the haves and have not's. relegation spreads the wealth financially and with experience. a semi pro team might go up for just a year say but the year after the money they have might keep them going for years.
andyjhwelch 2 years ago
and your right....
but until investors are willing to invest in more teams... the idea is not practical.
People wont go watch teams until the teams get better... which means the players have to get better... which leads me to my first point.
That and their needs to be more soccer literate people in the states... i can tell you that lik 50% of ticket sales are for first time soccer supporters... just going to see "what its all about" and then they never return...
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
what your idea mainly does is increase competition and variation... it does affect the overal league skill and "what not" but not as dramatically as we would like to think.
This is why only 4 teams have one the Premeir league... and the same 7 or 8 teams get rotated between first and second leagues.
What the draft does is make sure every team has a "chance", as well as prevent the same few teams from winning every single year. It works in our other major sports.
JahobesDaGreatest 2 years ago
cougar, i'm glad there's one other american who knows what they're talking about! SOMETHING's WRONG!!!
egkopite77 3 years ago
He is the 4th youngest player in the world ever to reach 100 caps for his national team and is the all time leading scorer for the US, and he's only 26. And he missed a huge chunk of last season and still finished with the most goals and a ton of assists. He might not have the skills of Messi but he fights like a champ. You can't argue with results.
Wonderbread101 2 years ago

Hey guys, iam from munich. As i heard about the rental of Donovan i was not sure if its a good decision. But he made, not only because of the football, but also because of his character a great addition to the game. His technique is incredible, his pace is outstanding in Bayern and for his size his headers are lethal!
I hope Bayern takes the option to buy him if he proofs his abilities and iam going to buy a Jersey of him for sure in sommer!
