You guys know that Kubrick didn't only use this song as soundtrack, but he also took inspiration for the movie from it. The pace, the mood, and built the movie on it.
I would rather watch this than "the Social Network". Don't get me wrong though; I know they are movies that are different from each other but I can't help it! I just can't help it! After I saw Barry Lyndon, it got me hooked on classical music. I even blasted classical on New Year's, thanks to this movie. And I would love to watch this movie again <3
Kubrick's most ignored masterpiece. I remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out and some people thought it was too slow. Dumb clucks. They didn't realize Kubrick was after not only the look of 18tjh century life but its pace, as well. To have good films you need good audiences...which is why we have so much crap today. Audiences are getting dumber and dumber. Thanks, fanboys, for destroying the greatest art form ever conceived.
This movie is so touching, it's beautiful. Really one of the only period piece films that made me realize royal, rich people have emotions, feelings, and are not just stuck up.
One of the three best films ever made. The others are 2001 and Blade Runner. Who the fuck can choose from those three? 2001 may be the most unusual and ground-breaking, true, but the other two...my goodness. Film as art
I am watching the Blu-ray version. Astonishing. It's wonderful to see how all the pre-production work Kubrick did for his Napoleon project was not just thrown away. It's here.
It took me 2 years of feverish research to discover the name of the composer (although Rosenman's contribution outshines Handel's). It's the most obsessive and tragic music I have ever heard. Everything is a masterpiece here, Thackeray included!

This video is like coalition of two masterpieces, one by A.Vivaldi other by S. Kubrick. I must asume that the 11 people who disliked this are... beyond retardation
Some people have misunderstood the movie, they find it 'slow' and struggle to focus on its smooth, elegant progress. Its actually rather like this piece, they are a perfect match- slow, measured power, beneath the surface big themes are slowly unfolded with precision. This music is a window straight into the human soul.
I was rooting and almost stood up from my chair when Lady Lyndons son said that incredible speech in the music room infront of Redmond Barry and his guests!
Thanks for your kind and friendly response. If by some chance you don't like the film as much as I, I will happily buy it from you (I've been meaning to order it for some time now, but haven't as yet). I think it's the combination of Kubrick's other,, more famous films and the starring role of Ryan O'Neal (not known for his dramatic roles, but superb in this one) that has kept it hidden.
This film deserves much more notice and appreciation by a larger audience. Maybe the least known great film by Kubrick. And of course, the music is superb, as this posting attests.
@Zeppolino100 you are right mate,to be honest, ive never heard of it ,until recently, seen a few excerts on youtube, and i must say ,it looks impressive,so ive just ordered the film:O)
The new Coke commercial with the two border guards that appeared during Superbowl 45 features Handel's Sarabande. It immediately reminded me of Barry Lyndon and how transported I was during this film. To this day, I still feel I lived during that time. It's time to watch it again.
@azerigirlholland:The theme (say: the melody) is originally composed is by Handel, who lived in the baroque era, that is roughly between 1600 and 1750 (the death of J.S. Bach).
The form is namely a formal, stately dance, the sarabande. This form was much used back then and used in the palace like Versaille. On a sarabande f.i. the king could enter the throne hall. However, the tempo of a sarabande combined with this orchestration (dark, low pitched instruments) remind us also of a funeral march.
@azerigirlholland yes, msot of it is, because not all poeple have the same reason or feeling for something. But some pieces can be easily known how one is feeling especaily positive pieces, for example J.S. Bachs, 15 sympathy, or some like that. it cone be heard, by typing in friedricks theme song for civilization 4. The song shows how he feels about germany, and its culture, used forf riericks back ground song for germany.

And of course God Save Mr. S. Kubrik doubtless one of the best regisseurs of all times
Is this the piece that sounds during the funeral of Barry Lyndon's son? I can't remember since I saw the film last many years ago but for some reason I though the music from the funeral scene when they are carrying the coffin in the small carriage with ponies was Mozart's Requiem, am I wrong?.
I won't engage in that boorish trend of saying, "9 people don't like love" (or whatever some witty fool might say to address those who have disliked this video). I will only question the soul of these people instead. How can you not love beauty? Your choice is made. Pistols at dawn, sirs.

Given that this was born from a failed Napoleonic movie project, I'm endlessly curious what could've been. Still, perhaps we should be grateful that this is the result of failure.
Suck an excellent film. Truely moving films like this one are so rare nowadays, and this was more than a quarter of a century ago. I do try to watch as many films as I can, but maybe there are some I have missed if I loved Barry Lyndon. Suggestions anyone?
I love this piece of music, it is so exciting at the same time sad. It always reminds me of my childhood when I lived in Ireland. I had a lovely childhood, but would never return to Ireland, could not stand the bigotry.
Google: ryan o'neal barry lyndon - there is a debate about that Ryan o'Neal made a bad part in this film (of Mr Neale Paterson). On the contrary my opinion is that I cannot think about any other person as Barry Lyndon. He, the music, the other actors, the "panorama pictures" of Mr Kubrik's beautiful handling of the camera - everything in this film was, and is, perfect and a joy to see listen again and again.
This is a very very slow movie and not so entertaining, but this movie has everything else! A good story, directing, acting, editing, cinematography, music and costumes!
If I must choose 1 film to bring with me on an uninhabited island, I choose this. Then I hide Dr Zjivago in my underpants. Hope they have a DVD-player & a TV there.
Never have I had such pleasure observing the 'old' world. What a wonderful film. The odd thing is, it has Kubrick fans divided. One group says it's his worst film, others hold it in the highest prestige. I am a casual Kubrick fan, and I'd choose the latter. This is Kubrick's best art imitating life imitating art. IMHO.
I don't know any film that can compare to Barry Lyndon for its unique quality; you would never normally say "slowness" is a positive quality in a film, but this film is "slow" in a way that's totally mesmerising. It's like watching a beautiful painting come to life, you are utterly drawn in and consumed. And Handel's Sarabande is so perfectly suited to the film it's scary. Extraordinary how a classical piece says *so* much that words couldn't say.
@Superstarlight867530 the "slowness" thing is true for most (right from paths of glory to shining and eyes wide shut) stanley kubrick films. he was a master story teller.
"you would never normally say "slowness" is a positive quality in a film" : What the fuck ? 'Course you would, if it it is required by the story. Amongst the fans of "2001 : A space odyssey", who would be dumb enough to enjoy a quicker version ? The slow development is an important part of many masterpieces.
I guess/hope I misunderstood what you were trying to say.
@Superstarlight867530 Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it. I can't stand loud action movies anymore; I already saw what an explosion looks like, and I heard slurs before, so I don't care much for them anymore. What I want in a movie is emotion, beautiful shots, great music and a well-written script. Barry Lyndon has all these and it's what makes this movie so great.
@CapitaineNemo - umm...ok. I'm not sure...sorry, are you agreeing with my comment or not? I concur with all that you say constitutes a great film (and what has become completely tiresome in action blockbusters), absolutely...just a bit unsure re your first sentence: 'Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it'. I see what you mean if I remove the word 'only'. Or have I got it wrong? pls advise ;)
@Superstarlight867530 I completely agree with you. My comment was addressed to those who can't appreciate artful films because they are "slow" or "boring", and I know too many of them.
@Superstarlight867530 I couldn't have put it better myself good sir! This is one of my favourite films, and i'm glad that you share the thoughts and feelings I get when i watch this great film! Also love this song!
@asmorrey1 - why, thank you for your kind words, though I must make one clarification and that's that I am most assuredly a 'miss' not a 'sir'! but I appreciated your thoughts nonetheless ;)
This may be my favorite film ever. Visually breath taking. The music is exquisite. The scenery magnificent. Acting is great (even Ryan does a pretty good job). The direction, mmm, Kubrick. They should redo this film with Ewan MacGregor as Barry. No substitution of American actors for the real thing. Merchant and Ivory should direct and produce. So there's my vote. I have enjoyed this bit of Handel since this movie came out. Thanks for sharing this.
@DaMuttzNutz No, Barry Lyndon was initially Redmond Barry, and Irishman, until he took someone else's last name and I can't exactly remember the character, but I think it was the old man who died and left his wife and her kid to Redmond Barry who then became Barry Lyndon. Still, he was Irish. I don't know that anyone could do a better job than Kubrick, but I'd like to see it. In the wrong hands, of course, it would be complete crap.
This is also used in the film 'Redacted', in which it also works very well - the war in Iraq, pretty military stuff. :P

We were talking about Kubrick, and he mentioned Kubrick's genius, in choosing the theme for Barry Lyndon.
As it was quite crappy song that sort of sounded like authentic classical music.

Handel clearly was a visionary, making authentic sounding crappy classical music 300 years ago.

This movie has to be one of the most underrated movies ever. I think because of it pace many people dont like it. Its really one of the best.

I like this version better than Handel's (one of the most predictable composers of all time) version

There are plenty of composers that are much more predictable than Handel.

@LiviuFloreaRo Looks like a good suggestion Liviu, as I am a big Ridley Scott fan and Napoleonic Wars films are usually good.

Is it possible to pick a favorite Kubrick film? there all masterpieces
007LandShark 1 year ago 3

IMHO.
FireitUp08 1 year ago
I don't know any film that can compare to Barry Lyndon for its unique quality; you would never normally say "slowness" is a positive quality in a film, but this film is "slow" in a way that's totally mesmerising. It's like watching a beautiful painting come to life, you are utterly drawn in and consumed. And Handel's Sarabande is so perfectly suited to the film it's scary. Extraordinary how a classical piece says *so* much that words couldn't say.
Superstarlight867530 1 year ago 78
@Superstarlight867530 the "slowness" thing is true for most (right from paths of glory to shining and eyes wide shut) stanley kubrick films. he was a master story teller.

@Superstarlight867530
ScorieDivine 1 year ago
@Superstarlight867530 Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it. I can't stand loud action movies anymore; I already saw what an explosion looks like, and I heard slurs before, so I don't care much for them anymore. What I want in a movie is emotion, beautiful shots, great music and a well-written script. Barry Lyndon has all these and it's what makes this movie so great.
CapitaineNemo 1 year ago
@CapitaineNemo - umm...ok. I'm not sure...sorry, are you agreeing with my comment or not? I concur with all that you say constitutes a great film (and what has become completely tiresome in action blockbusters), absolutely...just a bit unsure re your first sentence: 'Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it'. I see what you mean if I remove the word 'only'. Or have I got it wrong? pls advise ;)
Superstarlight867530 1 year ago
@Superstarlight867530 I completely agree with you. My comment was addressed to those who can't appreciate artful films because they are "slow" or "boring", and I know too many of them.

Thanks for sharing this.
sosome57 1 year ago
@sosome57 I disagree. They made this film right first time. Is the real thing a Scotsman then?
DaMuttzNutz 1 year ago
@DaMuttzNutz No, Barry Lyndon was initially Redmond Barry, and Irishman, until he took someone else's last name and I can't exactly remember the character, but I think it was the old man who died and left his wife and her kid to Redmond Barry who then became Barry Lyndon. Still, he was Irish. I don't know that anyone could do a better job than Kubrick, but I'd like to see it. In the wrong hands, of course, it would be complete crap.
sosome57 1 year ago
@sosome57
Ewan Mcgregor- t'would sure guarantee as wooden a performance as dear Ryan-O. And as convincingly Irish!
