  • This is also used in the film 'Redacted', in which it also works very well - the war in Iraq, pretty military stuff. :P

  • beautiful epic!

  • You guys know that Kubrick didn't only use this song as soundtrack, but he also took inspiration for the movie from it. The pace, the mood, and built the movie on it.

  • Came from a coke comercial

  • I would rather watch this than "the Social Network". Don't get me wrong though; I know they are movies that are different from each other but I can't help it! I just can't help it! After I saw Barry Lyndon, it got me hooked on classical music. I even blasted classical on New Year's, thanks to this movie. And I would love to watch this movie again <3

  • Kubrick's most ignored masterpiece. I remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out and some people thought it was too slow. Dumb clucks. They didn't realize Kubrick was after not only the look of 18tjh century life but its pace, as well. To have good films you need good audiences...which is why we have so much crap today. Audiences are getting dumber and dumber. Thanks, fanboys, for destroying the greatest art form ever conceived.

  • This movie is so touching, it's beautiful. Really one of the only period piece films that made me realize royal, rich people have emotions, feelings, and are not just stuck up.

  • One of the three best films ever made. The others are 2001 and Blade Runner. Who the fuck can choose from those three? 2001 may be the most unusual and ground-breaking, true, but the other two...my goodness. Film as art

  • there's too much grease in my beaker, dude.

  • I am watching the Blu-ray version. Astonishing. It's wonderful to see how all the pre-production work Kubrick did for his Napoleon project was not just thrown away. It's here.

  • The most beautiful version of Handel's Sarabande.Which orchestra is performing it?

  • @IonianGreek The National Philharmonic Orchestra. I'm assuming it's the UK group; there are a few ensembles with that name.

  • Great filmmusic!!!

  • Gawddamn this fucking good music. Should be the theme of someone's life.

  • @DarkFilmDirector

but it is...its theme of barrys life

  • Perfect tune about misfortune and unluckyness. At least in my opinion

  • Best Kubrick's film!!

  • THIS IS KUBRICK'S BEST MOVIE, IF YOU DISAGREE, YOU ARE AN UNWASHED PEASANT

  • Love Barry Lyndon!!!!

  • KUBRICK avait l'art de choisir ses musiques !

  • great movie it really gives a good impreshion on the 1600

  • @ronpaul2012rp man i think it is giving you the wrong impression in your case because we are talking of the next century here

  • @GLOWoftheABYSS oh yea it was the 1700s

  • film ?

  • @suoganraistrick barry lyndon

  • we brits are crazy mother ------- lol

  • @broadband01 Apparently not "crazy" enough to curse on youtube though.

  • miss you Stan.

  • Great film !!!

  • It took me 2 years of feverish research to discover the name of the composer (although Rosenman's contribution outshines Handel's). It's the most obsessive and tragic music I have ever heard. Everything is a masterpiece here, Thackeray included!

  • The only 3 hour film I finished and immediately had to re-watch.

  • @fandango269 it was the first movie ever, shoted with candle lights- kodak made a very fine material only for that film. sry for my englisch...

  • Barry Lyndon was a PIIIIIIIIMP :D

  • This is maybe my favorite movie ever, ever since I saw it as a kid. It's so beautiful! And Ryan O'Neal is fantastic! : )

  • Kubrick was one of his kind, a true master of his art. I'm happy he turned his back on Hollywood.

  • @Merrythought ... but did he?

  • @IsraelGTV Yes Sir, I think so.

  • Thank u Kubrik

  • I can completely recall the dialogue and their voices : )

  • Great version of the theme,

The music of Barry Lyndon is a beautiful Sarabande .. also called Parade.

    Juda.

  • very expressive, yes, sad and solemn!

  • The death of Barry Lyndon's son brought me to tears. I could not stop crying. It affected me like no other movie. The music is incredible and each scene is a masterpiece. ...Stanley Kubrick may have left this world but he left behind the best movie I had ever seen....

  • Handel was crazy to compose this song...

  • i was very young when i watched this. it used to come on hbo a lot. i just remember how pretty a movie it was.

  • Falling softly, softly falling to that place where dwell the vast hosts of the dead. Joyce (abridged)

  • I met Leonard a couple times. Was a cool dude.

  • DUN DUN..DA DUN DUN

  • @Clinton0707

Call me old-fashioned but I prefer my sarabandes.... dun DUN... da dun DUN

  • @Clinton0707 shame on you!!!

  • This is almost la follia.

  • What's the name of the main piece?

  • Un film incroyable, de plus en plus beau....

  • This video is like coalition of two masterpieces, one by A.Vivaldi other by S. Kubrick. I must asume that the 11 people who disliked this are... beyond retardation

  • @atsuktuvas2 Not Vivaldi - this is Handel and was originally for a keyboard not orchestra.

  • A beautiful song...for a beautiful film...

  • Too slow? Masterpiece of art is not a coke commercial. People have now attention spans no greater then blind dog puppies.

  • @Quex01 One could as well say that a sunset is too slow.

  • Some people have misunderstood the movie, they find it 'slow' and struggle to focus on its smooth, elegant progress. Its actually rather like this piece, they are a perfect match- slow, measured power, beneath the surface big themes are slowly unfolded with precision. This music is a window straight into the human soul.

  • I was rooting and almost stood up from my chair when Lady Lyndons son said that incredible speech in the music room infront of Redmond Barry and his guests!

  • No artificial light, how Kubrick did it is beyond me. I think the music is perfect means this for me is one of the greatest movies ever made.

  • The master piece of Kubrik's work. The best fim in the history of Cinema.

  • huh, this sounds like Nausica Requiem?

  • 50% of the amazingness of that movie is due to the music, fabulous!

  • Superbe musique et super film......

  • Ohhh excelente película, excelente pieza, qué más se puede pedir!!!

  • Thanks for your kind and friendly response. If by some chance you don't like the film as much as I, I will happily buy it from you (I've been meaning to order it for some time now, but haven't as yet). I think it's the combination of Kubrick's other,, more famous films and the starring role of Ryan O'Neal (not known for his dramatic roles, but superb in this one) that has kept it hidden.

  • @Zeppolino100 you can buy the film on ebay, fairly cheap

  • @broadband01 I've just bought it off Amazon (UK) for £3.99. It should arrive on Monday and I can't wait to watch it.

  • @SgtPecker £3.99 is cheap,i paid £6 for mine:-)

  • Questo film e' semplicemente stupendo.

  • This film deserves much more notice and appreciation by a larger audience. Maybe the least known great film by Kubrick. And of course, the music is superb, as this posting attests.

  • @Zeppolino100 you are right mate,to be honest, ive never heard of it ,until recently, seen a few excerts on youtube, and i must say ,it looks impressive,so ive just ordered the film:O)

  • The new Coke commercial with the two border guards that appeared during Superbowl 45 features Handel's Sarabande. It immediately reminded me of Barry Lyndon and how transported I was during this film. To this day, I still feel I lived during that time. It's time to watch it again.

  • Nice music video of sorts, but the framerate and quality is quite low. Do you have a better quality versoin?

  • can anyone explain what this music what to tell us...I love classic music, but it is hard to understand

  • @azerigirlholland:The theme (say: the melody) is originally composed is by Handel, who lived in the baroque era, that is roughly between 1600 and 1750 (the death of J.S. Bach).

The form is namely a formal, stately dance, the sarabande. This form was much used back then and used in the palace like Versaille. On a sarabande f.i. the king could enter the throne hall. However, the tempo of a sarabande combined with this orchestration (dark, low pitched instruments) remind us also of a funeral march.

  • @azerigirlholland yes, msot of it is, because not all poeple have the same reason or feeling for something. But some pieces can be easily known how one is feeling especaily positive pieces, for example J.S. Bachs, 15 sympathy, or some like that. it cone be heard, by typing in friedricks theme song for civilization 4. The song shows how he feels about germany, and its culture, used forf riericks back ground song for germany.

  • I didn't read all your remarks but I want to congratulate all of you because of your positive and differentiated commentaries which you rarely find in our otherwise beloved you tube.

May this Video (which is a Masterpiece) and it's comentators serve as an example on how to coment something in you tube

And of course God Save Mr. S. Kubrik doubtless one of the best regisseurs of all times

  • can music even this beautiful hold up after Kanye West samples it in a hit single? At what points does everyone just blow their brains out

  • Is this the piece that sounds during the funeral of Barry Lyndon's son? I can't remember since I saw the film last many years ago but for some reason I though the music from the funeral scene when they are carrying the coffin in the small carriage with ponies was Mozart's Requiem, am I wrong?.

  • I won't engage in that boorish trend of saying, "9 people don't like love" (or whatever some witty fool might say to address those who have disliked this video). I will only question the soul of these people instead. How can you not love beauty? Your choice is made. Pistols at dawn, sirs.

  • @MrErik9 - what a nice comment, thank *you*

  • Beautiful song and the video goes fantastic with it!

  • its something very sad and solemn about this film that draws the viewer to watch again and again ,its not apreciated as it should be ,a masterpiece

  • @RICHARDTOMLEY10WHARF I don't know about that. I've watched it about 20x in the last 3 months. Most spectacular piece of artwork ever put to film.

  • @RICHARDTOMLEY10WHARF slow as molassi but i adore it just as you say

  • @RICHARDTOMLEY10WHARF Im with you there, I say to people 'ever seen barry lyndon by Kubrick?' and even the film buffs are like 'no?'

Probably easily in my top 5 of all time.

  • @RICHARDTOMLEY10WHARF I agree. In my opinion the best of Kubrick's films.

  • it gives me hope every time...i dont know why!.....

  • very good music

  • @konaamar1 was heisst das auf englisch? Ich studiere Deutsch

  • la musica me recuerda los pasados fracasos en mi amor. Soy un sentimental señores.

  • love this interpretation of Händels Masterpiece

  • Fantástica composición, propia de un genio. Fantástica.

  • I think there is too much credit given to Handel here. Handel's harpsichord solo Sarabande may have been the inspiration for the soundtrack, but Handel robbed that from Correlli's La Follia. Corelli should get the credit for the inspiration behind this magnificent arrangement not Handel.

  • @nuaccents

In pre-romantic composition, everyone ripped everyone. It wasn't about having a message, or even art (in the meaning we use it today). Beethoven invented this notion. Composers were not artists, they were artisans, craftsmen. It wasn't about doing something new, it was about doing something perfect. They didn't have new feelings to explore, personnal urges to express or anything. Music was conceived as a very slow progress towards perfection, each composer reusing his master'work.

  • I remember talking to one snob asshole about movies.

We were talking about Kubrick, and he mentioned Kubrick's genius, in choosing the theme for Barry Lyndon.

As it was quite crappy song that sort of sounded like authentic classical music.

I tried to correct him, but he wouldn't budge on his point.

Handel clearly was a visionary, making authentic sounding crappy classical music 300 years ago.

  • @daleprechaungold

you need to be ready when Snob Asshole tries to weasel out of it by saying something like "the piece was composed for the harpsichord, I meant this modern sounding arrangement which could almost pass for techno music the drums are so loud"

  • Stan Kubrick the 'directors director'. The photographer

who became a director. Not the other way.

  • greatest movie ever made !!!! long live Stanley kubrick !!!!

  • this is a film only Kubrick could pull off. And so he did.

  • This film (Me) is in dire need of a BluRay release.

  • This movie has to be one of the most underrated movies ever. I think because of it pace many people dont like it. Its really one of the best.

  • I like this version better than Handel's (one of the most predictable composers of all time) version

  • @DanDaMan2794

There are plenty of composers that are much more predictable than Handel.

  • @jfbecks17 haha sure but Handel is pretty predictable

  • This score is intense. Amazing!

  • Master Achievement

  • belle musique mais film catastrophique

  • film et musique magnifique un chef d oeuvre du cinema

  • is anyone able to tell me where i can get the sheets for this from? violin 1&2 and poss cello? thanks x

  • Given that this was born from a failed Napoleonic movie project, I'm endlessly curious what could've been. Still, perhaps we should be grateful that this is the result of failure.

  • gran historia excelente pelicula

  • Kubrick was the son of God.

  • @Leobroprod Kubrick was God

  • @Leobroprod I think he is God

  • @Leobroprod Shut up you idiot. Why do you say such stupid things! You simpleton!

  • STANLEY KUBRICK AND CHRIS JERICHO ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD AT WHAT THEY DO

  • Quelle histoire ! Tout est beau !

  • most beautiful and least romantic view of the past i`ve ever seen. Masterpiece!

  • Maravilha: Kubrik e Handel.

  • HAIL HAIL Kubrick the master..

  • I can't believe this thing isn't out on Blu-ray yet.

  • Suck an excellent film. Truely moving films like this one are so rare nowadays, and this was more than a quarter of a century ago. I do try to watch as many films as I can, but maybe there are some I have missed if I loved Barry Lyndon. Suggestions anyone?

  • @AdamAus85 the duellists?

  • @LiviuFloreaRo Looks like a good suggestion Liviu, as I am a big Ridley Scott fan and Napoleonic Wars films are usually good.

  • @silenceseaandsky Thanks silence, I'll look into them. Btw I've travelled all around your country in the winter and all I can say is I love Germany.

  • @silenceseaandsky Hah, I've seen "The Journey" before when visiting my brother. He loved it too.

  • @AdamAus85

Try the New World by Terrence Mallick.

  • @Judas63 Cheers, will do.

  • Great music, Very fitting for the tragic tale of Mr. Redmond Barry.

  • Is it possible to pick a favorite Kubrick film? there all masterpieces

  • I love this piece of music, it is so exciting at the same time sad. It always reminds me of my childhood when I lived in Ireland. I had a lovely childhood, but would never return to Ireland, could not stand the bigotry.

  • Google: ryan o'neal barry lyndon - there is a debate about that Ryan o'Neal made a bad part in this film (of Mr Neale Paterson). On the contrary my opinion is that I cannot think about any other person as Barry Lyndon. He, the music, the other actors, the "panorama pictures" of Mr Kubrik's beautiful handling of the camera - everything in this film was, and is, perfect and a joy to see listen again and again.

  • Was it really neccesary to make it even MORe grainy?

  • This is a very very slow movie and not so entertaining, but this movie has everything else! A good story, directing, acting, editing, cinematography, music and costumes!

  • a timeless classic of a film ..and the ear for a sympapthetic sound track was there

  • If I must choose 1 film to bring with me on an uninhabited island, I choose this. Then I hide Dr Zjivago in my underpants. Hope they have a DVD-player & a TV there.

  • @petereuropa I'd take the short film "how to get off of a deserted island by yourself in 5 easy lessons".

  • @Rachegotter 'Thanks for the tip.

  • movie name??

  • @JasonBecker01

    Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick

  • WOW! This and piano trio are THE BEST themes in all of cinema!

  • Never have I had such pleasure observing the 'old' world. What a wonderful film. The odd thing is, it has Kubrick fans divided. One group says it's his worst film, others hold it in the highest prestige. I am a casual Kubrick fan, and I'd choose the latter. This is Kubrick's best art imitating life imitating art. IMHO.

  • I don't know any film that can compare to Barry Lyndon for its unique quality; you would never normally say "slowness" is a positive quality in a film, but this film is "slow" in a way that's totally mesmerising. It's like watching a beautiful painting come to life, you are utterly drawn in and consumed. And Handel's Sarabande is so perfectly suited to the film it's scary. Extraordinary how a classical piece says *so* much that words couldn't say.

  • @Superstarlight867530 the "slowness" thing is true for most (right from paths of glory to shining and eyes wide shut) stanley kubrick films. he was a master story teller.

  • @Superstarlight867530 terminator 2 and 3

  • @Superstarlight867530

"you would never normally say "slowness" is a positive quality in a film" : What the fuck ? 'Course you would, if it it is required by the story. Amongst the fans of "2001 : A space odyssey", who would be dumb enough to enjoy a quicker version ? The slow development is an important part of many masterpieces.

I guess/hope I misunderstood what you were trying to say.

  • @Superstarlight867530 Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it. I can't stand loud action movies anymore; I already saw what an explosion looks like, and I heard slurs before, so I don't care much for them anymore. What I want in a movie is emotion, beautiful shots, great music and a well-written script. Barry Lyndon has all these and it's what makes this movie so great.

  • @CapitaineNemo - umm...ok. I'm not sure...sorry, are you agreeing with my comment or not? I concur with all that you say constitutes a great film (and what has become completely tiresome in action blockbusters), absolutely...just a bit unsure re your first sentence: 'Slowness isn't a positive quality only for those who can't appreciate it'. I see what you mean if I remove the word 'only'. Or have I got it wrong? pls advise ;)

  • @Superstarlight867530 I completely agree with you. My comment was addressed to those who can't appreciate artful films because they are "slow" or "boring", and I know too many of them.

  • @Superstarlight867530 I couldn't have put it better myself good sir! This is one of my favourite films, and i'm glad that you share the thoughts and feelings I get when i watch this great film! Also love this song!

  • @asmorrey1 - why, thank you for your kind words, though I must make one clarification and that's that I am most assuredly a 'miss' not a 'sir'! but I appreciated your thoughts nonetheless ;)

  • @Superstarlight867530 oops my bad! how rude of me!

  • @asmorrey1 hey no stress...hmmm, perhaps I need to be more definitively girly when I write. More flowers and kitties, perhaps :)

  • Not only every frame every music note also

  • nice there are people how love this film

  • This may be my favorite film ever. Visually breath taking. The music is exquisite. The scenery magnificent. Acting is great (even Ryan does a pretty good job). The direction, mmm, Kubrick. They should redo this film with Ewan MacGregor as Barry. No substitution of American actors for the real thing. Merchant and Ivory should direct and produce. So there's my vote. I have enjoyed this bit of Handel since this movie came out. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @sosome57 I disagree. They made this film right first time. Is the real thing a Scotsman then?

  • @DaMuttzNutz No, Barry Lyndon was initially Redmond Barry, and Irishman, until he took someone else's last name and I can't exactly remember the character, but I think it was the old man who died and left his wife and her kid to Redmond Barry who then became Barry Lyndon. Still, he was Irish. I don't know that anyone could do a better job than Kubrick, but I'd like to see it. In the wrong hands, of course, it would be complete crap.

  • @sosome57

Ewan Mcgregor- t'would sure guarantee as wooden a performance as dear Ryan-O. And as convincingly Irish!

  • best movie ever made !!!!!
