I don't practice this, whoever the organizer was shouldn't have allowed it. it's just disrespect i totally agree with all of you who disagree with this video...
okay, ive been to many pow-wows my whole life, not much pow-wows do this and when they do its usually at traditional pow-wows. its our type of version of a "joke" when you see your powwow friends and family dancing to this its funny. just like when they have a wannabe special. when white people try to do pow-wow dancing. but on the other hand she shouldnt have been "grinding" in her jingle dress. she went way to far on that. but these songs are just for laughs.
I like the video because it shows native people enjoying everything the world has to offer. It's not a bad thing. They don't dance hip hop at any other pow wow's just let em have fun.
mainstream is nothing goverment controlled pupptes who are told whut to do n say whut they can air on stations and radio pow-wows are a spritual place were 1 can practice ways of our elders n the ones before them n so on to try n mix is like trying to tell the ones before us that we wanna change whut they been doing for hundreds of years.
@Dee92Jay81 you couldn t have said it better but to bring hip-hop n try to mix it is juss wrong theres a place for hip-hop dances like clubs pow-wows are supposed to be a spritual place where 1 can practice our ways
When I first saw this vid. my sister was watching it cuz she thought it was funny and she would keep watching it and watching it and I was pissed. No native should ever combine white dance with Native dancing. what the fuk is wrong with you. Its the most disrespectful thing a native american can do. no matter what culture. Pow wows are our time and come around for a certain amount of time in the summer and your being disrespectful putting the two together. shit pisses me off
Personally, I think that this is an awesome video! Two different cultures coming together, sooner or later all Natives are going to have to realize they can't remain apart from mainstream culture forever...And these kids are obviously having fun!! Who are we to condemn them?! Didn't Jesus say "Let those who are without sin cast the first stone!"
just sick! i hate how most indians are turning into wannabez to everything but our own culture. maybe we should stop all the old ones from drinking. maybe the young ones will have someone to be proud to look up too!! n ya i know effects of the church bullshit and yadda yadda, should stop using thast excuse. no time like the present to fucking change and get the fuck over shit, or at least attempt to. blah nevermind.
Im at a stand still but this is what all the youth is exposed to and we teach our children to express themselves but as some say we must take in some of the white eyes ways and sometimes make them better and more beautiful to survive in this modern world we live in this is an interesting way to do it.
@NDNWARRIOR918 Your native american and your saying this?????? by "trying something new" you will be erasing our culture and sticking it in a book to live even further than it already is. the fuk wrong with you
as a native american i do not find this disrespectful. come on have fun. i dance grass and i believe in mixing modern music with danceing. look up larry yazzie he's a native fancy dancer who not only uses the origional native music but the actull hip hop like black eyed peas and the party rock from lmfao. this isnt that bad to be honest. atleast theres chanting and no cussing. thats a good thing.
This is so disrespectful I'm a Puyallup tribal member and I'm also a jingle and fancy dancer and I would never do this in a million years.i was taught growing up respect your culture and respect the scared ground we dance upon and most of all respect your regalia!
its ok to dance like that but not in triditional regalia ther sacred 'to make mistakes is to gain wisdom its part of life' come on kids haveing fun creator created humor
My father was there during the occupation of the BIA HQ in Washington DC. The blacks sent them a truckload of food, supplies and volunteers, and they paid for legal aid. The wasichu student radicals didn't even send a message of solidarity. Yet, we allow wasichu to come and co-opt our culture, while we disrespect hip hop culture and what it means for the poor in this nation. Hip Hop is a social and political movement, and it has just as much place among the people as the Africans we should honor
@wharghoul Or have you all forgotten what Mitakuye Oyasin means? Not only do we owe the Africans a great favor for standing with us, we need to recognize what hip hop culture means to the youth.
@wharghoul i like hearing history like this. my black ancestors had some dealings with indians, although im not sure the nature of the relationship- they were either relatives, neighbors, or slaves...but at any rate they were intertwined but you dont learn this type of stuff in school
The whites did not go into your tepee/ longhouse and teach your men to molest your little ones, it was passed down by your forefathers.
The whites did not go into your tepee/ longhouse and teach your men to rape their girlfriend's daughters, it was passed down by your forefathers. ya it is understandable why some maybe offened by it.. but in all our elders taught us to be ourselfs and respect. we also taught to have a good sense of humor... i feel that any native culture and history .. we have a great sense of creativity , imagination, courage, and humor... and this what keeps our culture still going. pass on to other generations.

This video pisses me off so damn much... Like forreal respect the arena you dance in... You can take that kind of dancing to the club, not the arena... Our ancestors made it possible for us to dance and this is how you show them respect? Its probably these stupid California natives that did this... Wanabes and posers... Plz! Get your own culture and respect mine! :/
@dcmcdx Yes, I agree, this is not right. But for you to criticize "California Natives" in this way is just as wrong. If you would have taken the time to read the description of the video, you would have discovered that it was the Chickahominy Tribe in VA, for you to even mention California makes no sense.
@dcmcdx whoaa excuse me? im a california native and i know for a fact that we do NOT disrespect the regalia and the music sang from the drummers...obviously these kids were out of place but dont mean any harm and were trying to have sum fun but i wouldnt go off blaming a tribe for their behavior Especially since our people go under enough criticism in this society, we don't need to be pointing fingers. Im a proud Wintun Native. why the hell would i wana copy another tribe when i have my own?
As these young people grow older and learn more about the Native culture they will understand the disrespect shown in regalia. Many years ago the Europeans attempted to annihilate the Indigenous people and they began by removing our culture from us. We are all a strong people and we survived these attempts but not without casualities. This behavior is one of those casualites. I beg the Creator to help us all seek self respecting behavior. you see hip hop corrupting our youth as they disrespect their parents and people tryyna act gangster and hurting their own people or any people in general. Now they even acting like lil niglets at powwows ? oh ya that dress is a pretty traditonal and sacred dress. So disturbing how u indians run your powows. then u whine...we have no money....we drunk alla time.... give us more money...lets have a 49 er .. so we can drink since we sold our land for a case of whiskey. i cant speak.
I am very ashamed. This is very disgraceful, not only to the Jingle Dress Dance itself but to our ancestors. Think of what your mentor would say or other Jingle Dress Dancers would think. Your suppost to be setting an example to other girls and praying. Im a young Womens Tradional Dancer and even I know better. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but telling you that that is a sacred dress and needs to be respected.
The dancing whilst in the circle was distasteful but in hindsight, whoever was performing that should seriously think about rerecording that in the studio and extend it to about 3 or 4 minutes. 5 minutes would be acceptable if they had a break section. Check out my new video upload titled "Power of American Natives Tribute" mix that I posted.
@Dee92Jay81 i agree but the white man? realy? this aint white culture or native culture. if u want 2 b racist then do it right lol. this aint white influence. are we ever gona b able 2 stop with the racism?
@DashDarrenger okay well my bad i didnt mean to hurt your little mind i meant that the white man did a dame good job ASIMILATING US and i know the white man didnt invent pop or rap so my bad i put the blame on the african american and i say this because please show me a native youth today that dont try to act black everyone is Asimilating themselves and a GOOD EXAMPLE is the video theres NO RACISM in what i say just the TRUTH
@Dee92Jay81 lol ur a funny guy. just cracks me up cuz the white man is blamed for evrything. if u stubed ur toe walkin down the street u wud blame the white man lol. i agree with u on evrything else. its vry sad.
WOOOOO ... i know its like disrepectfull and all . .but i give them props for it .. i wish i could attempt that .. :D its pretty cool to mee. haha. All i watched today was pow wow dancing (:
My eyes are filled with tears, your ancestor's faces are wet with tears, your Regalia is stained with our tears. You have brought shame to all that love you and DAMN!!!!! shame on the Chickahominy Tribe that promotes such vulgar crap. Whats next, booty shorts and bikini tops?
Sure it's modern and changing but it was found and created on traditional values and principles, if you are of Native Indian decent you should respect and honor these values.
To all the haters, what do you think the dancers do at the clubs? Whether or not they are in regalia should not matter... Think about it! Competition pow wow is a modern construct, there is NOTHING "traditional" about it.
For one, the song in the video sounds like a remix. I've never been to a pow wow with turntables or music supplied via CD. Also, how sacred could this be if someone is taping it?
Who is making up these rules anyway? Next you'll criticize the materials they've used in their regalia as none traditional... or not. People need to know we are a living people, with a vibrant culture - not an eternal museum exhibition.
I find this totally disgusting, Native people have fought & died to keep their culture & traditions alive for 100's yrs years. Some dancing this way is disrespectful of Native Culture.
I'm not indian but I can see this is disrespectful. Im from oklahoma and they have tribal dances and pow wows out there in full dress and anyone with any sort of sense can tell its sacred. Don't bring sex into it with popping your hips and grinding against him like that. You should be ashamed girl.
How does the indians of person county aka Sappony get to ask for federal tax payer's money...and then threaten lawsuits to those same tax payers when they simply ask them how their group descend from the Saponi tribe or ask them what their enrollment requirements is.
Research the 3 groups in NC that uses the Saponi name today...research ANY of the families in those 3 Saponi groups and you will see how people in NC can claim whatever tribe name they wish to without actually being from them historically and still get state rec in north carolina!!! How does all historical documented Saponi descendants get refused enrollment in any of the 3 groups in NC that uses the Saponi name today??
NC and VA tribes are highly known for not allowing REAL descendants into their tribes, throwing away the historical tribe's culture, and calling themself histroical tribe names their ancestors NEVER was a part of. Several groups in NC today have state rec without even historically being from the tribe names they are using!! Some changed their tribe name 5 or more times and still have state rec.
This is the very reason East coast tribes need to learn their own history and culture and dress styles etc and stop stealing from the Western tribes. This stuff the east coast tribes around VA and NC bring to their pow wow's is NOT from their ancestors. We had our own dress style, dance style, drumming style etc. Our culture is part of the mayan's culture. We only use 1 drummer.
We kind of did something like this at a pow wow like dancing to Native hip hop, but it was NOT like this. We were having fun and was not inapporptate, this is just sad and disgusting!
The jingle dress is a medicine dress, she should not be wearing it and dancing like that, to wear that dress should come also with responsibility. As for others here commenting on the color of skin, you should also ask what us Natives have had to survive, a near genocide, by now, the color of a Native's skin is like the colors on the chameleon's back, we come in all colors because almost all have mixed. Focus on the issue, it is about the red road and lifestyle, not "looks".
this isnt a discrace to our people, although many people in the reservations would think so. when the pow-wow is a tribal get together. and pow-wows were mainly started so most natives could get jobs and earn money dancing in the pow-wows so white settlers would come and hire them and take them to their shopws. thats one of the reasons the people started making more elaborate designs was to get attention at these pow-wows. but u can beleive what u want, im just posting an opinion
I was shocked and displeased actually; this type of trash happens in night clubs, so do it there...but in a POW WOW, it's family oriented and traditional.
Besides this point, the dresses are very beautiful and intricately done.
I love the chants. May GOD bless the Natives all over...and give back what was stolen from you. Peace & Love to all.
I am not native but I feel it's NOT right to disrespect an ancestral tradition... Besides, I love to watch live pow wows: the music is great and pumping, the dancing is beautiful and the community spirit is overwhelming.
I am finding it hard to believe that this is allowed! The jingle dress is very sacred and they are disrespectful! If they want to do this type of dance they need to take off the traditional regalia and go dance in the white mans dance hall! I am ashamed! A disgrace to our people!
The elders would be very disgraced by this, it is in fun but please not in the circle, the jingle dance is sacred and traditional. It does not need to be changed. This dance should be kept traditional and sacred as it was meant to be. We expect tradition in the sacred circle, not ignorance.
SO DISRESPECTFUL! THEY NEED TO TAKE THAT B.S. ELSE WHERE!!! THE POWWOW CIRCLE IS MEANT FOR THE TRADITIONAL STYLE'S OF DANCING!!!! IT ISN'T NO DAMN NIGHT CLUB!!!!
Okay let me say i have been to Chickahomony many times and never seen anything like this.....I think it was meant to be fun and different as are how some dances developed... by breaking traditions....But I will say they should have left it for the social dance AFTER the pow-wow....not with the regalia on and after the circle has been blessed.
you know what no matter how many times people say its direspectful and such it wouldnt matter cause it passed and like you must have read its just kids having fun no harm done . you cant just strip someone from the love of dancing whether or not its not right to your standards i think that them being able to add there own touch to something they love is inspiring.
i think that this video is awesome i am a 12yr old native and love my culture this is just kids having fun and is very inspiring! all types of music are now trying to convert it with a touch of hip hop to recruit the younger kids:))even christian music has a hip hop version:))
Ya Ta Hay - A major qualifier of a living culture, is that it evolves. While some may see this video as disrespectful, it is also proof that this culture is evolving. This culture is not dead and only representative of what once was, but is evolving, living, growing. Perhaps this video is a testament to the continuation of the Sacred Circle. You may not feel like this is the best example, but open your hearts and maybe your ears will hear the echo of the Sacred Drum as it moves through time.
True, there is nothing wrong with having fun, BUT, please remember, the dress is sacred; the circle is sacred. Would anyone do this in a church in front of everyone? On the alter? The circle is no different. Everything has its own place and time. Some things you do at home (in your bedroom) you certainly are not going to do outside in the driveway, I hope. Just sayin'. Hip-hop is, in a sense, disrespectful. Remember your elders. They're there for the tradition.
It is somewhat disrespectful, but come on guys our ancestors fought and died so that we may live a happy life. This brought smiles to their faces when they did this. They laughed and had a good time. Would you rather have them beat their kids, or waste their money on booze? At least this brought them together, which is what our Ancestors would want.
@KanyeTroll omg really? india? buaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa have you gone to school yet or dont they teach about where NATIVE AMERICANS are from anymore?
thats wrong the dress is very powerful for healing she should have removed that dress im from canada and the elders tha dance this style heal the people the late elder lady that brought this dress back did not bring it back for this purpose this is disrespect to the ojibway people u should dance in your own tribes regalia dont disgrace the ojibway people
the new generation is more modern, native people should know that our generation isnt anything like our grandparents, so to see stuff like this i find entertaining. as native people we need too evolve we dont live in tipis anymore
there is nothing wrong with having fun but that girl is in a jingle dress wich is suppose to be a medicine dress she could have takin it off then had fun but this dress should be treated with respect along with the one wearing the dress should walk in manner that doesnt disgrace the dress
Im native american, and i don't find this disrespectful. there just having fun. Ok!? It's ok to have fun. Those people dancing are native american, There Having FUN, Have you ever heard of that word? I don't think you have.
Wow this clip was just a glimps of a fun moment aside from the pow wow its not ment as a show of tradition or trying to bring hip hop in to the culture its just some kids having fun... Nothing offensive and they are not trying to represent natives by do it...I hate how people can take a lil moment and make it into somthing to argue about. Get a life....
i dont find anything wrong with this. they're werent even close to grinding . seem like they had space between em. but i like it. as long they're were havin fun!
Is this dancing any worse than non traditional/tribe specific dress being worn? Most, not all but most, pow-wow's are anything but authentic, so get over it. You see so many tribes using styles of dress from other tribes, oddly enough usually enemy tribes. Our ancestors would be more offended by that than this style of dance. And for reference I am Poarch Creek, not some white pretender.
So are we to assume that he forefathers that we had, had no sense of humor? Are we to assume they were all so serious just like Hollywood always depicts them to be? Funny how we can be so simple minded with things in life and take ourselves far to serious.
So much of you indians on youtube are so sensitive, most you guys are commenting saying this is disrespectful meanwhile I bet most you guys drink and do drugs and dropped out of school, let the kids be kids
Honestly, to me this is disrespectful. You have those regalias for a reason, not to grind on each other like that. I know this is for fun, and yes I know what fun is.
I come from the Mushkegowuk Territory, and we sure aren't allowed to dance like that. Especially with Jingle dresses. But anyway, huka!
For fudge sakes. im a native also. i dont find this disrespectful nor disgusting . its just for fun!. i kinda wish that they would do that kind of powwows down where im from. so u guys dont have to freak out. ITS JUST FOR FUN!
I don't practice this, whoever the organizer was shouldn't have allowed it. it's just disrespect i totally agree with all of you who disagree with this video...

My eyes are filled with tears, your ancestor's faces are wet with tears, your Regalia is stained with our tears. You have brought shame to all that love you and DAMN!!!!! shame on the Chickahominy Tribe that promotes such vulgar crap. Whats next, booty shorts and bikini tops?

lng123gibbs 2 months ago
Sure it's modern and changing but it was found and created on traditional values and principles, if you are of Native Indian decent you should respect and honor these values.
kihisisl 2 months ago
To all the haters, what do you think the dancers do at the clubs? Whether or not they are in regalia should not matter... Think about it! Competition pow wow is a modern construct, there is NOTHING "traditional" about it.
StudzyIII 2 months ago
First of all it does matter!!
And where do you get off saying "dancers do at the clubs"?
Thats at the clubs you idiot! Thats the only place you should dance like that at NOT A POW-WOW!!!!
But why bother your prolbly the Apple Indian who dont know SHIT!!!
Dee92Jay81 1 month ago
@Dee92Jay81

Dunitlucky 2 months ago
I'm not indian but I can see this is disrespectful. Im from oklahoma and they have tribal dances and pow wows out there in full dress and anyone with any sort of sense can tell its sacred. Don't bring sex into it with popping your hips and grinding against him like that. You should be ashamed girl.

If this video insults you..then take that anger and start researching the tribes of NC and VA and learn the truth behind several of them.
Monasukapanough 2 months ago
How does the indians of person county aka Sappony get to ask for federal tax payer's money...and then threaten lawsuits to those same tax payers when they simply ask them how their group descend from the Saponi tribe or ask them what their enrollment requirements is.
Monasukapanough 2 months ago
Research the 3 groups in NC that uses the Saponi name today...research ANY of the families in those 3 Saponi groups and you will see how people in NC can claim whatever tribe name they wish to without actually being from them historically and still get state rec in north carolina!!! How does all historical documented Saponi descendants get refused enrollment in any of the 3 groups in NC that uses the Saponi name today??
Monasukapanough 2 months ago
NC and VA tribes are highly known for not allowing REAL descendants into their tribes, throwing away the historical tribe's culture, and calling themself histroical tribe names their ancestors NEVER was a part of. Several groups in NC today have state rec without even historically being from the tribe names they are using!! Some changed their tribe name 5 or more times and still have state rec.
Monasukapanough 2 months ago
This is the very reason East coast tribes need to learn their own history and culture and dress styles etc and stop stealing from the Western tribes. This stuff the east coast tribes around VA and NC bring to their pow wow's is NOT from their ancestors. We had our own dress style, dance style, drumming style etc. Our culture is part of the mayan's culture. We only use 1 drummer.
Monasukapanough 2 months ago
We kind of did something like this at a pow wow like dancing to Native hip hop, but it was NOT like this. We were having fun and was not inapporptate, this is just sad and disgusting!

The jingle dress is a medicine dress, she should not be wearing it and dancing like that, to wear that dress should come also with responsibility. As for others here commenting on the color of skin, you should also ask what us Natives have had to survive, a near genocide, by now, the color of a Native's skin is like the colors on the chameleon's back, we come in all colors because almost all have mixed. Focus on the issue, it is about the red road and lifestyle, not "looks".
gatita77711 3 months ago
this isnt a discrace to our people, although many people in the reservations would think so. when the pow-wow is a tribal get together. and pow-wows were mainly started so most natives could get jobs and earn money dancing in the pow-wows so white settlers would come and hire them and take them to their shopws. thats one of the reasons the people started making more elaborate designs was to get attention at these pow-wows. but u can beleive what u want, im just posting an opinion

Hatorah 3 months ago
I am not native but I feel it's NOT right to disrespect an ancestral tradition... Besides, I love to watch live pow wows: the music is great and pumping, the dancing is beautiful and the community spirit is overwhelming.

I am finding it hard to believe that this is allowed! The jingle dress is very sacred and they are disrespectful! If they want to do this type of dance they need to take off the traditional regalia and go dance in the white mans dance hall! I am ashamed! A disgrace to our people!
byotchable 3 months ago 2
The elders would be very disgraced by this, it is in fun but please not in the circle, the jingle dance is sacred and traditional. It does not need to be changed. This dance should be kept traditional and sacred as it was meant to be. We expect tradition in the sacred circle, not ignorance.
