I don't see why a return to live performance as the big moneymaker for musicians and artists is "naive." It's the one and perhaps the only commodity artists can directly control, and the only one that generates revenue exclusively for the artist (as opposed to the royalty system for record sales).
Heck, the more one thinks about it the more it makes sense: charge for live performance and the music recordings themselves are just for promotion.
Brand names appearing in Music videos like they do in sports events as a form of advertising to raise revenue. Thats the new model for money making. Watch telephone by lady gaga
add the growing convenience of technology into the mix and it equates to the rotten fruit of gen y ( nothing personal and not their fault ) who are the natural evolution to this disaster. democracy perverted becomes freedom from responsibility. how can the children of such a society possibly bring forth music that matters when nothing is at risk and all are comfortablely numb. this is the real reason why the music has died.
Nothing they try and do is going to change the current musical landscape artistically anyway. the western world has been able to keep armed conflict off it's shores by having more money and control over the global situation. having to confront war at you own front door forces you to re evaluate your life. with this not being the case for several decades, each generation has become more insensitive, numb and removed from a common humanity experianced by our great gran parents.
'musicians making a living off of performing is naive and counterpoductive'. You mean so many of these 'artists' will have to actually work for their money? How many of the most popular musicians actually write their own songs now? They're just singers told what to do with a face and personality and then take the credit and get called 'artist'. They should play more shows and actually work for the ridiculous amounts of money they make. I know not all are like that but the most famous ones are.
Music will be free in the future in whatever form. How it gets to you or me does not matter it will be free, people will volunteer to pay for music they enjoy, period. Titan music companies will break up because the regardless of the power they have on distributing music and holding the radio stations hostage will not matter - it will be free.
When he says other models will fill the gap what does he mean, In other words he admits for those like myself who are small artist trying to make money in this business it will be tough cause of copyright issues, but how will those other models, help us make a living?????
I agree, but the cassette (and the CD) appealed to portability and durability, mainly for the Auto and boom box. Furthermore, the cassette offered the ability of customers to record their own music. this opened a new market in addition to the LP.
Also, there is a TON of talent out there, but the current business model of the main stream music industry has shown a preference to quick money, rather then developing strong, long term artist. The 5 plus platinum selling artist seems to be no more.
no if you think of it....the cassette (you remember cassette singles?) was the first mark in back word quality...you can even argue that the cd was a step back in quality from the original record... but mp3's are pure shit intended for digital music... which is why umbrella and shit like that is selling...cuz the format of music is changing...i don't like it... what ever happened to a band... there is no real talent anymore

Businessmen are way less interesting than artists when they talk about the music industry.

I-Tunes surpassed Wal-Mart as the #1 music retailer! For the first time in history the consumer has taken a step backward in quality.
