I'm 57 and my Mom always talked about the General Store ower in Our town saved alot of ppl from Hunger by giving Credit to tide them over the rough times.I think this is the Rev's message that in a Community the Neighbours are The Business Owners NOT Corp CEOs. He SUPPORTS independent Business that Big Box Stores are slowly Killing.
I mean, his intentions are noble, but no buying groceries, no buying clothes, or household products, many people would die of hunger and cold and embarrasment
anyone can make or grow those things on their own, but the point is kind of to counteract consumer society by being semi-serious and satirical, not blame everyone who buys groceries or whatever.

Jesus told his disciples and others to give, not to be selfish and stingy, nor stop buying things.
The only way to have more money going around is to help the economy grow by buying things. Whether or not one chooses to give to the poor, that is his or her choice. Jesus gives us free choice. But he did not tell us to stop buying things. Read your bibles carefully.
oh, one more thing. i ain't a christian. but i think a christian shouldn't be so dogmatic as to follow the word of God to such stupid extent. Dogma is not equivalent to spirituality. I am all for the spiritual or moral teachings, but very against dogmas and commandments. It is you dogmatic freaks and fundis that give religion a bad name.
first of all he is a genius and amazing second of all he is a stand up comedian and third of all he based the religion on true facts so dont be so inconsiderate
Oh please, he doesn't mock religion. He's making it fun and funny for the general public so people take notice of our consumer spending habits...which have awful social and environmental effects. If I'm not mistaken, the bible warns of us the evils of money many many times... that's what he's doing. He's not making a mockery he's bringing that to light. The holidays should not be about shopping at 4 friggen AM on black friday but about family and helping others...not friggen shopping.
The man is not mocking religion, but is connecting with people in one of the most familiar forms possible, as a means to convey a serious & urgent message to America. He should be praised, not vilified! If we do not change our ways of conspicuous consumption, it will ultimately be our downfall. That is all he is trying to express & people should listen!
How dare any of you buy into him!!! He mocks religion and that is an insult to God himself. Yes, we should be more conscious of how we spend, but this guy should've been more mature in getting his message out. He looks like a complete nutjob!! I worship God, not fools!!!
Rev. Billy is right, what do people need all that shit for anyways. All the fucking corporations are in the business of making you think ownership of things is a worthwhile hobby. Take us home, Brother Billy! Everybody stop shopping!
If we stop shopping, how the world are we suppose to live? Does Rev. Billy wants us to starve to death? Huh? I mean you got to think about shopping for food. We all got to shop for food. If you want to believe all of Rev. Billy's lies and starve yourself to death, be my guest. 'Cause I'm not going to believe all of his false teaching.
Its not about stopping shopping altogether, its about only shopping ethically and not shopping at superstores and companies that own sweatshops. Stop shopping is just a slogan.
will u wake up! he isnt meaning stop shopping and starve. he means to stop and think about what u are buying, and why are u buying it. is it necessary or is it to make u feel better??
I think that people are incomplete in many different levels of their lives and they shop to ***overcompensate*** for whatever they lack. It could be spiritual, it could be a lack of health or a lack of connection with others.
He doesn't say don't shop for food. He says stop MINDLESS CONSUMERISM. Americans are 'sheeple', getting distracted and dumbed down by corporations and bombastic ubiquitous advertising. Studies show that people are NOT happier when they have more. What dupes people have become--and it makes them quite easy to control when they are desperately materialistic and in debt... Wake up, America! You've been blind TOO LONG.
StopaShopping Changalujah! Amen Reverend Billy, Changalujah! Shopocalypse. Change the World. Change is a'coming. Proof that ART can make a difference. We are watching you - from a distance - Somewhere in the Universe. Love to you from Pope Alice/Papa Alicia
Reverend Billy and his gospel group are great! I have seen them in other places online and on Free Speech TV and love the message. This is the message we SHOULD be hearing from religious leaders.

what's wrong with a guy "preaching" against the evils of consumerism? its a GREAT way to get the message around!
besides, the presentation of the clergy has almost nothing to do with god. if you really "worship god, not fools", you wouldn't take it so seriously.

It makes sense that a lot of the stuff we buy, after a couple minutes, does not make us happier once we realize all the debt we've collected.
keepjammin36 4 years ago 3
And not even the debt. Most people are not satisfied from empty robotic purchases and empty consumption, debt or no.

"Studies show that people are NOT happier when they have more."
Eh, not really. I feel at peace and pretty content with what I have, though it's only 90% of what I want.
I don't go by the rule "all or nothing". That is ideal that's impossible to achieve and fools who live by that line will never truly be happy.
