Cat chirping at birds

My old cat used to do the same thing...he would look at the birds and make these little chirps, I'd pet him and he'd look at me and give me this meow, then go back to the little chirps.

I've heard that it's an attempt to sound like a bird, and draw prey closer, but that might just be a myth.
