It was made for reflective, smart children--not ones who grew up addicted to Dragon Ball Z and My Littel Pony. It has the same problem finding a large audience as Samurai Jack.
i love the jack pumpkinhead character (second favorite character after Scarecrow) and i think they perfectly captured him not only in the visual sense but Brain Henson's voice acting in the role is beyond perfect, he did a great job.
If it hadn't been for "Where The Wild Things Are" a few years back I say that this is Jim Henson Company's greatest accomplishment.
Jack Pumpkinhead reminds me a lot of Jack Skellington, in the beginning of Nightmare before Christmas, Jack Skellington is dressed in the scarecrow outfit with his hand pointing to Halloween Town...it always reminds me of Jack Pumpkinhead only a scarier version. This is one of my favorite movies from what I call the Disney Dark ages along with Something Wicked This Way Comes...
looking at the way the wheelers were designed, i can see those wheels being used to make a freaking awesome sport of the future. i'm surprised no one has even tried anything with that yet.
@evilmidget Ha, that's a good idea. The only thing is they say they could only use them for half a day, so it would have to a game that doesn't last too long.
Yeah, Richard Berger there was the nail in the coffin for this film to receive the full blown recognition it deserved. Who cares if it went over budget? it was amazing! If i were to produce a film like this today, I'd get Murich to direct it.
I probably love this movie even more so than the first, because the characters were even more fantastical, like Jack Pumpkinhead and Tik Tok. Such a great movie!!!
Sadly, this was Walter Murich's only film as a director because the movie wasn't a success in the theatres
Your right Johnlindsey289. I discovered this film only through listening to the Nostalgia Critic, and after watching it on Youtube it scared the hell out of me. I could only imagine what kids back in the 80's went through watching her empty expression as she ventured onto an abandoned yellow brick road.
You mean Angry Video Game Nerd, not Nostalgic critic. they are different you know.
Now Pinocchio and the Emperor of the NIght was another dark kids movie from the 80's, remember that? it scared me as a 6 year old in 1987 in a theater.

Nice clips used. I really enjoyed the attempt at rexognizing this forgotten film but... hey, you ever hear of a microphone?

Return to Oz was such a great movie. The sets were great, the visual effects and the costumes were great too.

Lyle Conway did great puppetry without a dose of CGI. Even today's Harry Potters and Spiderwick Chronicles are half as dark as this movie.

@Johnlindsey289 Both The Nostalgia Critic and The Angry Video Game Nerd have mentioned Return To Oz. I'm fans of both of them.
