  • Square Enix isnt a bad company, some problems they do have are

1)milking of franchises, too many games saturate the market and the overall quality of games drop.

2)they dont seem to be as scared of failure as other companies, they are a very big company, and can take a loss.

squaresoft never had too much money and probably put a bit more effort.

other then these two, square enix is a good company.

  • yeah, but I would say for number 1 that if people do not want too many Final Fantasy games then just do not buy them. I say just buy the main series or something related to the main series (like Versus 13). Other than those 2 they are a good company, and one of the better game companies.

  • Internet tough guys like you amuse me!

  • INTERNET TOUGH GUY MOTHERFUCKER

  • thank god they made final fantasy :)

  • Just think how many great games Square was releasing when they were Square EA. 1997-2000 saw several great games a year. After the merger, I can barely think of any Square-Enix games I enjoyed.

  • Didn't like FF10?

  • I didn't even like the FFIV remake. The crappy 3D killed the appeal.

  • What about the FFIV remake for GBA? That was good.

  • I never cared much for Square's spin offs anyway but your right Square Enix is not as bad as people make it out to be. Look at it this way FFXI was not bad at all it is still one of the top MMORPGs out there. The only main Final Fantasy title they have developed is FFXII. It sucked (compared to other Final Fantasy games) but it wasnt horrible.

  • Square-Enix isn't a horrible company, but they are pretty bad in comparison to the original Square. Square was all about innovation while Enix was about milking familiar franchises. Enix pumped out Dragon Quest games with very little change between titles, while Square brought something new to the table in each FF and brought us innovative games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FFT, and Xenogears.

  • they are good and they will be better once they ditch their shitty ass president

  • Sega has been showing alot of promise lately though Example: Yakuza series, Valkyria Chronicles, Madworld, and others.

  • i dont think square enix is becoming crap, sony is becoming crap.

  • Great rant. I agree. In fact, I think Square Enix is as good as ever. I've played every FF game and haven't seen this drop in quality everyone seems to think exists. XII is one of my favourite FF games and probably in my top ten favourite games overall. X-2 is extremely underrated and a very fun, solid game. On the Enix side of the equation, DQVIII is a simply awesome and the DS DQ games are all great fun. The Tri-Ace stuff is all fantastic and the new S-E IPs have all been interesting and fun.

  • I agree 100% that Square Enix is still a very solid developer. I hope they continue releasing stuff like Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant and continue to take chances with changing up the Final Fantasy series (like they did for FFXII whether you liked it or not).

Up coming titles like Star Ocean: The Last Hope & FF XIII look to continue the trend of solid games.

  • I agree. Square may not be as good as they used to be. but they're still putting out solid titles. TWEWY was a great game. Actually that was one of their most original title in a while.

  • Continue: Also,I agree that FF7 is also getting too much mainstream attention here and there, true and what not and add too many cameos of Cloud,Tifa or Sephiroth in every new kingdom hearts game they come out with, but thats not the only problem,Square also need to Fix they're Seiken Densetsu series which has gone downhill since they;re best two games Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 (children of Mana in my opinion was only mediocore)

  • Final Fantasy 1 was originally suppose to be they're final game after Ridge Racer and King's Knight,if it were'nt for Final Fantasy in the first place,we would have never had square Soft to exist today, and whats more,if it were'nt for the merger of square and Enix,we would have never had more Dragon Quest games here in the states,I'm enjoying both the remake versions of Dragon quest 4 and Chrono trigger and i'm looking forward to the remake version of Dragon Quest 5

  • Nice Christmas tree.

  • Square Enix is a great company they made some the best games like Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts Sure they milked Final Fantasy 7 to death, but I pretty much enjoyed Crisis Core. Also I agree what you said about Sega ever since the Dreamcast died, they went downhill as well as the Sonic franchise. Some of the Sonic games are a hit or miss, like Sonic '06 which was a complete abomination and Shadow the Hedgehog is a mess but they learned thier mistakes with Sonic Unleashed.

  • square enix rocks i am a great fan!

  • I personally think that The Final Fantasy Series died after FFXII came out

And all the fanboys who get all the butthurt just because Square-Enix is going to make a port of FFXIII to the 360 should remember: They are getting all worked up over nothing. Square Enix are not 'traitors' simply because they want to make money to stop the company going bankrupt by porting (and I do exagerrate the 'port' part) the game to the 360. Its a game for christ's sake.

  • I would have to agree, Square Enix is not that bad, true they milked some games dry but all in all it's not that bad, good rant

  • Ur rite Magus Square Enix may have some issues most preferably milking FF7 but they are not a bad company. I do want 2 play Infinite Undiscovery though it does look promising. And I plan 2 preorder Star Ocean the last hope for my 360. Btw I do hope one day Square Enix will remake Illusion of Gaia great RPG that's overlooked.

  • I have similar thoughts to an extent, but I'd say SquareEnix definitely has changed from what it was when it was producing the old FF games. From my view, they were producing one solid FF title after another for a long time, till it finally reached 10, then things really just seemed to change.. Yea its true they prob had some really crappy games out we weren't exposed to in America during the 90's, but the FF games were something that they never messed up on.

  • Even though they seem to be slowly worsening, I still think their a pretty good company, making some decent games. And FF13 really seems to be taking the FF series back to how it was.

  • Magus I have to agree with you about Sega. Ever since the Dreamcast was abandoned, Sega has gone downhill especally with the Sonic series.

Sonic Unleashed has a long way to go to convince me they've turned the franchise around. When you throw in a pointless plot device like the werehog, it tells you they still got work to do.

  • Stupid Sonic Spin-offs.

  • "Oh yeah and BTW NINTENDO had FF first before anyone else, but not body cares."

Yep and it's really sad when fanboys ignore truth to justify their lie.

  • Anyone remember Vagrant Story on the playstation 1?

  • My favorite RPG would have to be Dragon Quest VIII by far, which was made by Square Enix.

  • dude u say some really good things i enjoy your show probably the most of any on you tube i shall subscribe now haha keep em coming CHRONO TRIGGER is my fav rpg and i would have chosen magus as my name until i saw urs great minds think alike

  • square enix is god son god

  • Sega at the moment have been doing pretty well. Not as good as they use to but still very good.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and Sonic unleased.

    Condemned 1 and 2

    Valkyria Chronicles

They are proberly some of the good games they have at the moment.

  • Dragon Quest Monsters Joker

    That was a Great Game!

  • Hell yeah! I just wish I could find an online match for it...

  • I kinda stopped playing it after a while

  • im thinking about what you said about SEGA not making that many good games any more and i was wondering what was your take on the viking battle for asgard game?

  • Square Enix is a great company.

The only problem i have is that they don't care about Europe much and never seem to promote or do anything over here. They just really bring the games out really and thats about it.

The games they have rescently have been pretty good. Mainly handhelds have been brillliant this year with Crisis Core and The World Ends with You.

  • also Square Enix lost a really good member which was Yasumi Matsuno who was a video game designer for them.

He made FF 12, Vagrant Story and more.

  • maybe S.E. hates Europe but They put thier games in America.

  • oh no they still put thier games in europe, but they don't promote them aswell as US and japan and release them as quick as they do.

  • Meh, SquareEnix is a pretty solid company for what it's worth. Must be doing something right if people still buy their games. Frankly I haven't brough a game from them since I bought crystal chronicales, the last good FF game IMO and that was like 5 or 6 years ago.

  • Hey Magus, you should defend Sega and Nintendo in a reasonable way next. You did great with Square. Why not do other companies.

  • idk i dont think theyre bad i jsut think theyre losing there touch but im hoping ff13 well turn out good to me the best game company is valve but thats just me

  • just wondering but whyd they change there name from square soft! it makes no sense!

  • they merged with Enix, so they changed they're name

  • I think SE died when they released FF10-2 but I would be happy if they remade FF7 for ps3 & 360 (to be fair) because that tech demo was a tease.

But magus how can you say that about Sega, they released one of the best games this gen Valkyria Chronicles.

  • There are exceptions, but alot of sega stuff dude has been junk! Maybe not Valkyria Chronices, I have not played it but, there has been alot of other junk!

  • Sorry I forgot you don't have your ps3 anymore (for a long time actually lol) so it's unlikely you would get the chance to play a 30hr rpg on it useless you have a really nice friend.

  • I've read the Wikipedia article on the gameplay system. It seemed similar to Advance Wars.

And I HATE Advance Wars. So I don't know if I'll enjoy THAT game. Plus, boosting morale? I don't even know how to do that.

  • @CrzyNick That happened with FF8 actually.

FF8 is the bane of games for me and the start of bullshit games.

    FF9:i liked it

    FFX:Pretty good game,

FFXIII:I hated it,i absolutely hated it.I didn't like the linearity or the button mashing.

I heard what they did to parasite eve 3 or known as:the third birthday.I saw a video and it looked like a fps game and lost some of that survivor horror atmosphere.

  • Sega have released some excellent titles actually, like the new "After Burner"

    "House Of The Dead5"

another great "Out Run" and few others i don't remember!

  • I was mostly talking about their console servings, their arcade servings are quite good as you mentioned!

  • I gotta give credit to square for their ds remake to Chorno Trigger, the best RPG ever. But game companies will always have their misses at Square Enix is no different. SEGA still makes some good games like Initial D and Yakuza.

  • In addition...

I think Final Fantasy: The Sprits Within is watchable, the trouble was it was branded as a Final Fantasy film, and not once did it have any homage to the license, with the possible exception of its "spirt" philosophy.

And yes, Sega has been going downhill, even though Sonic is no longer bleeding, its other actions has now moved up the problem list and are now outstanding.

  • Yeah, what Sega needs to do is bring back one or more of the following:

    +Ristar

    +Streets of Rage

    +The TRUE Golden Axe

    +The TRUE Altered Beast

    +The TRUE Shinobi

    +Fantasy Zone

    +Alex Kidd

    +Vectorman

Why did I say "TRUE" on some of the titles? Because I wanted those games to go back to their roots, not all this Beast Rider/Hotsuma/Project Altered Beast junk.

  • It's not as easy as it looks. You can't just expect game series like that to come out.

Sega may not bring those series back for financial reasons. Maybe they don't own the rights to those games anymore.

Also, bringing those games back may become a risky move for them. Nowadays, most gamers are leaning towards powerful systems like the PS3/ 360/ Wii. Arcade games and platformers like those may not interest them anymore.(espeicially PS3/360 gamers). People may think they're outdated.

  • Vectorman, I'd understand. But Ristar could be done. Heck, Sonic Unleashed's Werehog had stretchy arms, so why not? They brought back Nights.

If not, at least bring back Ristar or Streets of Rage for the DS. Or maybe Alex Kidd for the DS.

  • yeah, a remake of streets of rage would be pretty cool, or even a streets of rage 4, but I still will have that nostalgic feeling of the sega genisis versions, but if its streets of rage im definantly looking foward to the soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro

  • The same can be said about Apple, i mean yes they have done foolish things, but at the same time they had to in some cases because they want to hold on to tradition of premium, easy to use products. Lets hope they don't inhibit progress just because of tradition.

I'm all for tradition, just so long as it doesn't inhibit progress.

Back to topic, and one thing sums up Square Enix, they are good storytellers but bad diplomats. They make good products but they fall flat on distribution.

  • Square Enix = LJN/Acclaim LOL

  • Square has not died yet, I do not see how the could be compared to Acclaim. Square is still making a lot of good games people are still willing to buy

  • This generation has been pretty bad for them on the console front. None of the games they released have been considered great by the community (Last Remnant, Project Sylpheed, Infinite Undiscovery).

Square-Enix is still the top RPG developer in the world, and no matter what, at least the Enix stuff is good.

I think Square is going downhill, with everyone worth a damn gone. Sakaguchi left, Uematsu, big guys from Quest. All they have left is Nomura...which isn't worth praise, at all.

  • By big guys from Quest, I mean the developers from Quest they brought into the company to make Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII.

  • Geez, you act like Nomura is a cancer or something.

  • Have you seen the characters he designs as of late?

  • Which ones? The Kingdom Hearts characters or The World Ends With You characters?

Either way, I don't care. I've probably seen worse character designs.

Besides, I don't even mind the "belts and zippers". I don't really get Y. Amano's style. A person said that Amano was inspired by American comics...um...what? I didn't see the influence. I didn't see any Western comics that looked anything LIKE Amano's concept sketches.

  • Hmmm... I actually seemed to like Amano's style :P

At first, it wasn't really "love at first sight," but as I played the FF games a bit more, I've realized that Amano's style was pretty original, and perfectly fitting for a FF game.

The original FF games had that celtic-irish medievil feeling. Amano's artwork set that tone and atmosphere, but ever since the new artist was hired, that original atmosphere was gone.

  • Magus can you review the new Prince of Persia Game?

  • Square has done a hell of a lot of stuff over the years, awesome stuff (IMO CHRONO TRIGGER, FFIX, TWEWY, Drakengard) and bad stuff (IMO KH1, KH:COM, Mystic Quest).

Hm, Square seems to be randomly scoring hits nowadays. They definitely haven't gone downhill(they still have great games being made), but sometimes I can't help but think that maybe they should just strip some of their franchises down to their most basic level, instead of continually pumping out these big epics that could fail.

  • i for some reason only like the world ends with you and kingdon hearts since they are different from the cloud/seproth epic fight game

besides, if someone hates it because of disney stuff in KH or justa weird vibe from TWEWY, then theres something wrong

  • watching magus at 3am..lol

  • it's just the Sony fanboys that are mad and put down Square Enix

  • i dont get angry over a company making games for multiple platforms or switching to a different platform like bethesda with fallout 3 or some other other games like assassins creed

  • Well Magus those were some good mentions there from Games, Except Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean are made from Tri-Ace, Square Just publishes them but there are good games none the less. Square is not dieing it's just they need to stop milking the FF series so much, FF7 in particular.

  • What I believe is that Remakes are good, Expecially the Two Star Ocean Remakes, they were never remade before and I am glad they were remade to this time so everyone can enjoy those games who could not play them in the past.

  • You forgot to mention the "Sony Betrayal", many Square fans got pissed and are blaming Enix for Square's switching to Xbox 360 console. I have a friend who was completely pissed that XIII is going to be on both consoles, I don't see why people get so upset.

But I agree --Square-Enix lacks the great games, nothing they have made since Final Fantasy X has been "epic" even though I loved Infinte Undiscovery, nothing has got people as excited as FFX. FFXII tried but failed, and yes, it's not bad.

  • What I don't understand is how did Square Betray Sony? I mean Sony was on Nintendo first and saw being on Sony was a better business decision. And when Sony made the PS3 Sony thought it would be better to post their games on both consoles because it is a better business decision. I know you said you did not get so upset about it but those people have to understand a business needs to do things in order to stay alive

  • That only applies to North America and Europe. Japan still has it on one console only.

I don't really have problems with Square Enix, but they have made some pretty lame decisions in the past, and now it has come to bite them in the preverbal.

At the end of the day, the latest actions chessed off the fanboi, but who gives a deal about them.

  • I agree with you, PrinceOfMooselnc. Why would the company keep denying Microsoft after the success the 360 had? It was clearly an economic decision; why would people shrug off a chance at more money? The fact is fans got pissed off and is a source of this Square-Enix hate. I like the company, I dig their games they publish, Final Fantasy Tactics is still my favorite game of all time. I'm lame.

  • Excuse me I have a horrible Error in what I said, when I said "I mean Sony was on Nintendo first and saw being on Sony was a better business decision." What I meant to say was " I mean SQUARE was on Nintendo first and saw being on Sony was a better decision"

  • Sony Betrayal rofl you know that Sony are getting 2 FF XIII exclusives

    Final Fantasy Agito XIII

    Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Oh yeah and BTW NINTENDO had FF first before anyone else, but not body cares.

  • I agree, SE is still one of my favorites in the industry. I mean come on people, besides Atlus, who else puts out the amount of RPG's that SE does? even if they do not develop everyone of them you still have to give them credit.

  • As much as I like square-enix, they tend to remake a lot of there old titles. Instead of puting these old games on the Virtual Console for 8 bucks, they port them to the DS or PSP and overprice them. An ex. would be Chrono Trigger for 40 bucks. Plus we still have yet to hear of a release date for the FF13 games in North America.

As for spinoffs, they are hit or miss (FF7) and remakes are ok but how many rereleases of Final Fantasy have there been since there original releases.

  • I agree with the milking of the Final Fantasy 7, maybe it's going too far (my opinion). I don't think Square Enix is THE best gaming company (I don't think any gaming company is the "best" at all, every company has their strengths) but they're not a bad company like Magus said.

  • Valkyrie Chronicles is a great game that sega just released

  • i love square, but for the love of god, they need to stop making money off of cloud and sephiroth. as much as i LOVE FF7, there are crap games spawning from it. eg: dirge of cerberus.

  • Square Enix is a great gaming company

But it's just that I hate how the underrated Star Ocean, Grandia, Chrono, Xeno, Shin Megami Tensei & other RPG series are being overshadowed by Kingdom Hearts & Final Fantasy (and to some extent Dragon Quest)

  • @OlimarthEX

acaulty is FF7 and dragon quest thatsd overshadowing kingdom hearts since everyone hates old classic disney

  • I don't and I still despise Kingdom Hearts (though KH2 was good).

  • so your saying you hate how they are supporting the classical disney movies?

  • No, I'm glad they are. I just did not like the KH games, apart from KH2 which was good. It didn't stop me from not liking the franchise, though.

  • oh okay, its your opinon anyway, theres nothing i can do to change it so im fine with it.

  • KH 2 was decent but the fact that it was waaaaay to easy made it lose a lot of points in my opinion, you could literally beat the game by pressing the attack button all the time

  • I agree wtih you on that, I only died once at the final boss in kh 2. Its not a bad game, but it was way way too easy. I liked Kh1 better because I found Kh1 to be challenging at some parts!

  • Gotta agree with you, no matter what anyone says Square-Enix has been one of my favourite game developers/producers

In my opinion they made some of the best games of last gen, they were even making games for consoles that were about to become saturated, so I love Square-Enix, can't say much about mistwalker yet, haven't played any of their games.

  • Yeah. I have to agree that for the most part, Square Enix is a good company. They have had a few misteps ::cough::Drakengard::cough::, but otherwise, they have done quite well.

  • What is the name of the first song? I love it!

  • It's from Metroid Prime 1.

  • It's the Credits Song from Metroid Prime, composed by Kenji Yamamoto

  • I agree. I think they are okay.

  • square like any other company needs to make revenue these days. It's 100% true that gaming today and the market is a completely different beast. For a fan of a certain series to lay claim to those games as "Playstation" or "Nintendo" properties is being ignorant to the fact that

Square Enix is an independent company that needs to be able to make enough profit to continue, so if it means going multi-platform, it will do so to survive.

  • id compare square to capcom and capcom is my all-time fav company not a fan-boy but most t=of te games hey make are really good like the DMC series and megaman of course but i like square enix a ton ut i agree that the milk a franchise a little to much even though they make a alot of money fronm that series mainly FF not really DQ since not that popular here but godly in japan, i just got lat remnant its fun sure its slow and laggy sometimes but the actual gameplay is fun :)

  • 00:01 FTW

  • Square is pretty hit or miss lately, I think they are still trying to find they're groove on these next gen consoles. Games like the last remnant are still solid IMO but it is plagued with technical issues that should really be addressed.

  • I just think Square Enix's overrated. FF7 definatly was (IMO). The only game I really thought was underrated was "The World Ends with You". Besides that, I have no problem.

  • I agree, we need to understand their points. I hated when those Sony fanboys/girls treated Square like a First or Second party. I know FF13 will be on the 360 cause they know most people own them more than a PS3.

  • yeah your right.

  • agreed.

  • Yes, I agree with you. People need to see the real points why Square does the things they do. If you ask me, because of the weird economy of today, they have to do whatever they can to make it out here in the screwed up economy that we have today.

  • lol good for you
