I'm quite good singer when I'm singing alone but when i'm singing in front of people I just froze and I'm totally unable to sing high notes even thought I have a soprano voice and I can sing high notes with power... But in front of people... I can barely sing at all. My voice gets shaky and unpowerful. Is practice the only way to help my confidence or is there any tricks to make that shakiness to go away? :D
@Fenii88 I have the same problem. My mother used to say I was doing it on purpose just to sabotage my auditions. I think getting over it comes to what he said in the video about thicker skin and also practice. The two put together can overcome our stage fright.
One thing to know- the shakeyness never completely goes away. You'll always be nervous, but you'll learn to work through it and regain your power in spite of it. At least, that's what I believe. ^_^ Don't give up! Just keep at it!
Ever since I learned your breathing technique, I can say Thank you Lord for Eric Arceneaux.
My Diaphragm is so developed by following you breathing technique twice a day, and somehow when I couldnt sing at all but played Piano and Guitar like the pros...My brother and sisters and even my best friend told me to quit..but because of my determination just like yours today I am a Leader Singer at My church and right now im developing a Christian Aletrnative/Rock Band so wish me blessings~ThumbsUp4U
my dream is to be a fmous well known singer, i will soon be adding videos to youtube, in april, but im 13, i have emailed a bunch of websites but they said wait until im 18! should i?
im 12 and somepeople say i can sing and some not. i luv how u kept going and look at were you are now. im never gonna quit becuz of that storry until im 16 then 4 sure i just suck
great too see you acctualy doing what you feel god called you too brother i am a bit of an awful singer a lil nasal but im trying and i have a passion for it too mate anyway congrats and thanls
would like to know if i can sing or not posted video from november on my youtube and still not been seen by anyone would like someone to tell me if i could sing or not or if i got any vocal damage family and friends say they like it but would like to know what a stranger thinks because family and friends wont break it to you if you sound terrible
do you think you can ever overcome fright if you can come over fears such as going on a esculator when your terrified of them can you overcome the fear of singing in front of people too
awh.. i've always wanted to sing and be up on stage but my parents never encouraged me. no one did... so i feel like i have to find another career for myself to keep me stable so now i'm taking sciences in college. but i've always wanted to do music. awhh.. i don't know what to o anymore.. i wish someone could train me so i'll be better T^T
Im only Half way your video, And i cant even explain how inspired i am by you right now. I totally believe that you must work hard to achieve your goals, and that exactly why I'm going to try to do, Definitely follow your footstep .. #AsaSinger.. =) Much love
ive always love singing..in a room on my own. but the more i do it the more i think "dam i wish i could sing this tune or that tune but its just too high for my voice" and it wasnt that high. but im gonna try and try now cause its a major stress reliever <3
This is actually very strange. I also have a huge passion for music and my dream is to sing and always has been. My parents also tell me that I can't sing and that I'll never make it. You know what's funny though? All my friends tell me I am great. In fact I am also going to go to college and plan to pursue music. I'm 15 now and in a few years I'm sure my parents will see that they are wrong. I'm sure you can tell I have a pretty similar situation that you went through. :)
i know exactly how you feel! music is my passion, but i cant sing very good. when i watched this,, i felt the strongest feeling in my stomach, i cant explain it, i love music so much! is there anything you can do for me? please, please give me a few tips, anything.
I'am sixteen earlier in life i didn't really think of singing i was more into drawing even though i was in chorus and always singing,{i sing n do art} i started geting more serious about singing when i got acceptedinto D.A{arts school for drawing} my vocal coach tells me i have the instrument but i want to be really good stylistically at R&B but i know to do that i have to kepp practicing and working hard for that :} THANK YOU! i used to think people could just magically fiigure out the r&b stuf
Thank You, so much, for telling your story....demystification of the creative process is sooooo very important! You go boy!! Where are you you located for lessons in person?
Thank you do much!!!! So glad I stumbled upon this. Actually I'm a subscriber because of a friends suggestion but I'm not sure I ever checked out ur videos! I want to sing. People tell me all the time "whydont u sing" because they like my normal speaking voice. And for so long I've said "I can't sing!" I'm making efforts to change that so this was so timely and encouraging and reminded me of that will smith video about hard work. There may be better actors but no one works as hard as me.
Hi Eric.Im will perform this song by Creed called higher for about 20 times for about three months.Your one of the few vocal coaches on youtube i trust so im asking you.... Could you do a how to sing like video with this song.I like the song but im positive this dude has bad technique.
If you cant make the video i wonder.Am i correct when thinking the lead vocalist pushes the larynx down waaay to much.?
i am an inspiring singer and i wish you could just fly out to australia and become my instructor, you are so inspirational, i love every single one of your videos, im 16 and i hope that i can become like you someday :)
@LittleHotHead I'm dying for him to come to Australia. but the problems are 1. i dont have paypal or credit or anything for online lessons. and 2. i dont have money for myself to go to any sessions he would put up in Australia .... because i havent really told my family that i want to be an singer... maybe cause im embarassed or some stuff but my life story isnt something i wanna talk about haha..
One of my Fave singers!! <3 inspired ^ . ^ btw..I just made my first cover so feel free to check it out and tell me what i can improve on or if i should just stop=p pleez don't hate! Kthanx!
I actually want to know what you do to help get rid of gas. Some times when I want to sing with my favorite songs, I find myself fighting a burp. Is there a trick you use to by pass a burp or to help alleviate gas pre-performance?
i must say , i been trying too learn how too sing for the LONGEST! i actually came to a point to where i was like i dont have it in me. i never even thought about singing until this preacher walked up to me , & ask me do i sing . because of how my voice sounds he considered that i should sing , i done looked up on the internet all up & down thru my city. & no one is the right teacher for me! can you please help me!! do you do lessons thru video chat? please let me know all the info!! thnks!!
peace E, may u please check out my page and possible let me know what i should work on, because there plenty of days i want to give up but i just love to sing. i use to dance ad thats the only performig art my mah supports. youtube is my ispirtation aside from destinys child, aaliyah rihanna and adelle :)
I have a question, how come some people I know can just wake up without warming up their voice and still sound rather good. Whereas if I were to sing without doing your vocal exercises I have no bass in my voice and transitioning is pretty much a no go? It's annoying I wish my vocal stamina lasted longer.
Hello Eric, first off i would like to thank you for posting up all these helpful videos. Now, I was wondering if you could answer this question. How do you know if your vocal chords or whatever that is in your throat, is messed up? Recently, I have been singing alot and straining my voice for long periods of time and also screamed at the top of my lungs. and now when I sing, it's not as clear as it was before.... thanks!
I looked at all kinds of videos, to find help with singing. You are really amazing in the way you explain tecniks, but you are also the most inspiring, because you seem to understand, that for some of us it's the physcologic aspect, that can be hard to overcome. You gave me the courage to try again. I'm now taking lessons, got your "vokal warm up" recently, and feel I'm on my way to something I've missed! This video gave me a little more selfconfidense, THANK YOU! Love from Denmark!
You are a God send. I can relate to your stories of people trying to dismiss and shame you before others. I've learned much from you these past 2 1/2 yrs. regarding the AApproach and attitude. Discernment & wisdom are gifts. Sometimes I go flat in a song or someone else will. I'll ask if it's pushing, breathing or unreliable notes or muscle tension, etc.?) I pray for them & myself. Then, get results through God, your exercises and practice. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
DAMN ERIC!!! I truly admire your drive, and your story is VERY inspirational and lets not forget that you are a bright FINE AZZ young MAN... O M G!!!! (exhalling) ;)
@EricArceneaux It's ridiculously astounding the amount of people who actually believe that being a great vocalist is purely a matter of talent. Now I'm not saying that talent is not important, because obviously there are people who are naturally more talented than others, but talent itself won't make anyone a true vocalist (as in someone who masters their voice as a musical instrument) without hard work... it's not something that comes out of the blue.
@EricArceneaux that's bogus that you were kicked out of your high school choir because you had no prior experience, because at my high school choir we had to learn that stuff we didn't come in with full knowledge of music we had to learn and sing at the same time that was bogus.
i really wanna get started singing....but is 21 years old too late to start?, i have had a few friends hear me try singing and they have said i can hit some really good notes etc, i mean if anyone has any tips or thoughts please reply or let me know...especially you eric lol, your my inspiration/cyber vocal coach lol :d, your great man!......someone get to me please :)
I've been going through your warm ups, and I can't believe how much they've helped already - and I've only gone over them once so far. After watching this video, I can honestly say that you are inspirational. I've wanted to sing since I was little. My family has always complimented my voice, but I've always been just good, not great. I just never knew how to get better. I won't give up, and might even be brave enough to post a song or two sometime. Thank you so much.
My singing voice is actually good but my voice is so high it sounds very childish and it can't really be taken seriously unless I sing very low and it's just not natural to me so is there someway I can still sing high but not ummm toddler like..
Your ambition and drive to reach your goals is truly inspirational! I like hearing and reading stories like yours. It makes me want to be the best that I can be.
You've probably answered this elsewhere but how many days a week do you practice singing and how long are your practice sessions?
You are one of my biggest inspirations. I love singing, and want to become great at it. I have no money and no career, and this is what I would like to pursue... But everyone is always telling me that I'm not horrible but I can be wayyy better. What should I do?
It's surprising how similar your past experiences were to mine, and I can totally relate. I was ridiculed and discouraged from singing by just about everyone I knew during my school years- my music teachers, even my own family- though they supported me in just about every other endeavour I took- compared my voice to a "bawling cow". Long story short- I now sing with 4 A Cappella groups (one competitive), and get nothing but compliments for my 3.5-octave range. I'm still no Eric though ;-)
ur really inspiring! ive always loved singing sense forever.and ive always wanted to be a famous. then i started to lisen to people sing and i started to think"how could i ever sing like them" i never quite singing. i wasnt gonna give up. even tho i didnt ever try as hard cuz i thought it was just to far away. but i then i ran across ur vid. i didnt have a utube account then so i couldnt comment. but u gave me hope so i wud sing songs ALL the time and im SO much better cuz of u thank u so much!
I mean, the one who disliked this. Also your story really gave me a whole different view over this world so you're great anyway. And you sing really well.
Thanks for this! I went through a lot of that as well until someone finally showed me what I was doing wrong and I've been working hard to learn more about my voice and to build it to where I want it. Your videos have helped me tremendously. I still doubt myself on my bad days but you just showed me that I don't have to!
Thank you very much for sharing such an inspiring story that I think can be applied not only in music, but many other endeavours that one may be passionate for. Please keep your work on youtube to give an update of your journey from time to time, and I'll support you in every realistic way that I can. Deepest regards
I have trouble mizing my registers. When I play around with a note in a song, I hit a point where I am sliding up a hill with a ceiling. But when I do something weird, I get the resonance between my nose and my chest/throat. I don't know which exercises help specifically with blending registers. Thanks for the videos, they've really helped.
You're my new music role model next to RLes. I wanted to take music in college even if don't have any background in it or perhaps skills 'cause i love it, but they told me to choose something else with a better future plus music schools are expensive 'round here, but i still want to pursue it after college. thank you for at least giving me a shed of light, that perhaps, someday and one day i'll be doing what i really love, it's more than money and fame, it's passion. good luck man! :)
Not trying to be an Ahole but from wat u just said at the end of the day u still had some potential now am saying theirs people like myself that really really cant sing ive tried ur exercises for several months ive also stopped smoking just to see if i could gain something wat can u do for me or wat can i do to improve or actually have some type of vocals & wen i say i cant sing i sound horrible i dont mind not being the greatest i just want to sound at least alright fact is i just love to sing
Hey Eric, ive watched your videos on how to sing specific songs, i'd be really interested in watching one that on coldplay, i know you said before that you've covered coldplay songs before and coldplay are my favourite band so i really hope to see one
Thanks for all your free stuff Eric you've genuinely helped me massively
Dear Erick, I believe that you are surely one of the awesomest people on this earth. Really nice generous and good guy..! God Bless You and Your friends & thankyou always for sharing your honest videos. "Merry Christmas to You and Your Friends"! ~carol
what u said is so true im following the path u are my dad was against it but then i had a chat with my vocals teacher on my first day i asked him "can i be a singer when i dont have the talent" he said: as long as you have the passion for singing and ur willing to go put it ALOT of effort and go that extra mile its been a year since i performed on stage for the first time early this month and afterwards i think back and feel satisfied that i took this route in my life instead of going to college
Wow I am in tears now......I love music but always felt like my voice is not good enough ......I can tell when I mention my love and passion for music to my family they don't want to be mean and say you are not good enough but I can see it in thier face.......this gives me the courage and push to pursue what I love and know that if I put in the work I can and will get better ....I kinda of always thought you have it or you don't ....GLAD I was wrong
LOL....you're wrong for that picture of you, Aubrey, Sheldon, and Darrell!! but on the real...keep up the good work. You honestly have one of the best voices I've heard in a long time. You got an Eric Benet/Brian Mcknight kind of style. Keep doing your thing and don't feel bad...at least your homeroom teacher didn't make you push the bleachers in so you could clean the floors in the gym in the morining. Shout out to Coach Smith...lol. 35 in the building!!
thanks Eric for the inspiration you bring to people who believe in what they do, to achieve success you have to make sacrifices and spend alot of time in what is your passion, I respect so much your honesty because when someone is honest is when people really listen to what he or she says; and its an expression that comes from the heart. The language of God is Music, Ive bought a couple of your lessons and im seeing a lot of improvement in my singing Thank you so much for all the help, Godbless
God has instilled a wonderful gift in you, and i bet the church loves it during the songs in between service, and hard work will get you almost everything some famous sports players used to suck at sports till they trained day in and out, as well things that are worth having in this life is not easy to obtain, if they were we would not appreciate it as much once we obtain it
Do you think that singing in church gives younger vocalist basic training and an edge? Did you sing in church? Because I've been able to sing well all my life but I also feel that without that first training I wouldn't be at the stage I am now?
Eric, GREAT story! I took 3 piano courses as an elective, but I had to audition ON THE SPOT with Dr. Ware and get his approval since I was not a music major. He can be intimidating and he wore me out a little bit, but he granted me approval (Thank God)..lol. Glad to hear that there is some hope for those of us who currently have little or no vocal talent. Keep up the good work, you are an awesome vocalist. (XU rocks the house!)
I wish you were a judje because you wouldn't just say no your bad, ect you would explain how to improve and believe in you self. We really need more people like you.
Thanks for this video Eric! I've been singing since I was young. Parents were never really fond of it so I never really sang much in front of them. I have been in numerous competitions for years and years but I never placed even close to a runner-up. I've decided for my life's work, I wanted to be singing for it. I had doubts about time to time but it is these videos and words that people say to me that make me rethink twice ;). So thank you for this! I'm sure I'll achieve my dreams one day too!
Thank you Eric! Your story truly inspired me. Unlike most of your viewers, i have very little experience in singing, but alot of experience in music in general. I play the piano and also produce beats. I have always wanted to learn how to sing AND be great at it, but i don't know where to start. I'm 22 years btw. Are your programs on aapproach suited for beginners? Thnx for the help
Thank you for this Eric! I've always loved singing, but for a while, I grew up thinking it was something that you had to be born with, a sort of talent. Didn't help that my dad told me a lot of times that I didn't have talent, that I didn't have the experience. Only very recently have I started taking vocal lessons, but that didn't help with my confidence level since I've gotten used to thinking that I can't sing. But this is really inspiring :) Thank you for you really, you're amazing!
dude that's amazing! hahaha do you still keep in touch with the ppl that laughed at you or the ppl that said you couldn't sing? Do they still remember they said in the past now that you're a well-recognized vocal instructor? LOL
@enjoylifeJYL Funny u should ask that. My Dad is now one of my BIGGEST supporters/fans. The choir director, who kicked me out in High School, now brags about how she "...always knew that Eric had a gift." lol. And my homeroom teacher.. the one who said I'd be making a big mistake... Well, she came to see me perform the lead in the opera, "La Serva Padrona". After the show, she walks up to me and says, "Eric, forgive me... cuz I have never been more wrong about anything in my entire life." :)
@EricArceneaux Wow Nice! Looks like hard work payed off :) I respect you man for pulling through and pursuing what you loved despite what people said. Super inspirational thanks for sharing :)
Wow I thought you were one of those people that could always sing. It's hard to believe that you were not born with the gift of singing. I'm serious, I truly find it hard to believe.
It's strange, you and I have completely opposite stories. I started singing at five, and my parents were always supportive with my dreams of going into music/singing and letting me know I could do anything. But it's always been my own self-doubt and thinking I wouldn't be able to achieve those goals/dreams. I was in choir in high school too and had a bad experience just because I wasn't use to singing in the classical form. So after that, I was like, "Eff this, I give up." Now, two years later,
Eric thankyou you've help me improve my singing alot in the past six months, but i'm in a band and i play guitar and write the music. I would love for some tips for myself and my singer on how toi add more emotion and I would love to send you a demo of our song PLEASE WE ARE REALLY GOOD BUT WE COULD BE THE BEST my email is larkenmacbeth@yahoo.com I've been sending my stuff into music companies and they want us to sound like modern pop and we just refuse to do it I would Be eternally gratful.
I absolutely love to perform! People are always tell me thats not your path, im not right for music or whatever, but thanks Eric for giving me some hope :)
Great vid! It's do funny because I have people that tell me to shut up all the time but I still sung cause its Wat I love to do. I actually have a pretty good voice in my opinion. Lol love your voice as well.
its crazy how you never would think someone as good as he would of went through what ive been going through. like word from word and its amazing. he really made me second guess alot of what people been saying about my singing thanks eric.
@Quanner1 If I made you question what "people" say, then my job is done. Remember, the only person who can set limits upon you is you. I've heard you sing; u got skills!
Hey Eric My name is cameo holliday... and you and I share a some what the same story. And I too struggled to be a singer all thru high school and thru out my career. And your story touched me. It reminded me how far I've come to understanding my voice and my music. But there are things I still need to learn. I wasn't gifted when I started and my family told me to shut up stop trying your not gonna be good at this. But I kept on pushing. And now I have the voice I've always dreamed of.
Prior to watching this, I thought you just had the gift. I mean you do have a gift but you know what I mean, right? Eye opener. I am proud of you brah if it means anything.
Eric I must say that i have watched many of your videos since i have started taking singing more serious & I feel that this has to be the most inspirational video i have watched from you because i can honestly relate to your story, which is amazing and inspiring. I have a performance Monday singing This Christmas for my high school band's Christmas concert & after watching this video I feel much better about it. GOD has truly blessed you. Thank You for sharing this with everyone!
@richieyeo1996 They range broadly from Brian McKnight and Mariah Carey to Jessye Norman and Salvatore Licitra. I also randomly love Eva Cassidy, Otis Redding, Paul Simon, Rachelle Ferrell, Regine Velasquez, and Stokley Williams (of mint condition). Even as I type this, I realize that there are too many to name. lol
This is such a great story. My mother always said I had a good voice but because I had never been in choir she said I was too behind to make it a career. I decided to sing in all my free time and over the last year I have improved my techniques and increased my range. I can sing songs I could never sing before. I don't think starting at 16 is too late.
I sing since i was little , my friends likes my voice and they say i have a singer voice loll , but the problem i have is , i cant reach the very high notes on demand , but sometimes i sing high pitch notes easily , BTW I'm a heavy weed smoker , do u have some tip or suggestion plz ?
@LadyJannaGrace I find it interesting that, despite the overall positive nature of ur comment, u still felt the need to lead into it with a statement so abruptly negative. It was surely not "constructive" in any way. As an artist/Youtube user, I'm used to people like u. As a human being, though, I suggest that u self-evaluate. Something in ur spirit felt compelled to express the negative first, even when the positive could've easily stood alone. Meditate on that.U can grow a little more.
Hey Eric first of all Thanks a lot. I cant forget your first video i watched about breathing which was like half of singing. I have a question do you know why I sound great in studio or indoor but i suck in open air while others sound exact the same?
this made me cry a little!hahah..whenever i sing now people would tell me things such as awesome, wow, you sing so good,beautiful..they have never known my awful past whenever people would laugh at me, telling me to just stop singing it'll never be for me, my family,my classmates & friends before, almost everyone would say negative things about me singing..well i understand them now, i sounded so so badly that's why!hahah,.flat, sharp, throaty, pitchy,"shouty" :p
I just think if I'm flat or out of tune or if my color is ok... Music is so hard man... Thanks for the video, hope someday u read me and sorry for the 2 comments, just felt like I needed to write this here. Peace Eric, keep the AMAZING job.
"Your instrument is great" A lot of my teachers keep telling me that, I just dunno what happens to me actually I'm studying Music hard and everything but I just feel like I can't do it now, I'm Scared to sing in public and scare of the grades they give me at the end of the course so... I don't know, your video is grat, it is inspiring and your story is kind of like mine too... But i'm still trying and can't get into it, can't just feel sure about what I'm doing and always worried when singing...
i went through a similar situation when I was younger. i've always wanted to sing but it took me a while to get to where i am now and honestly i'm still learning. i auditioned for my college's music department last year, which is a very classical based program, and was rejected because i basically choked at the audition. i was told to audition again for the next year but i was very discouraged by the rejection. your story definitely inspired me to keep at it though, thank you<3
Excellent expression of how it often doesn't pay to "judge" yourself, but to objectively look at what things you can do, mechanically, to improve whatever you do, by breaking a big 'problem' down into smaller 'problems.' Self-judging stirs negative emotions that distract from skill development.
Thanks for this video! We hear so many stories about how a singer had a natural gift at age 4, that people can get discouraged, and "see" barriers that aren't really there. You prove otherwise!
Thanks for this video. All throughout my life I have been told I have a beautiful voice. I enjoyed singing,I use to sing for my HS gospel choir. but in my late teen, I got depressed and gave it up. I'm now 35 yo and want to sing for my church choir, my voice is still nice, but I can't control the tones. I think you can help me. I'm broke right now, but in the near future I plan on ordering some of your products, I'm confident that God will help me find my voice again.
Mariah Carey isssssss fantastic

This is actually very strange. I also have a huge passion for music and my dream is to sing and always has been. My parents also tell me that I can't sing and that I'll never make it. You know what's funny though? All my friends tell me I am great. In fact I am also going to go to college and plan to pursue music. I'm 15 now and in a few years I'm sure my parents will see that they are wrong. I'm sure you can tell I have a pretty similar situation that you went through. :)

@EricArceneaux It's ridiculously astounding the amount of people who actually believe that being a great vocalist is purely a matter of talent. Now I'm not saying that talent is not important, because obviously there are people who are naturally more talented than others, but talent itself won't make anyone a true vocalist (as in someone who masters their voice as a musical instrument) without hard work... it's not something that comes out of the blue.
sadisticsoul69 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@EricArceneaux that's bogus that you were kicked out of your high school choir because you had no prior experience, because at my high school choir we had to learn that stuff we didn't come in with full knowledge of music we had to learn and sing at the same time that was bogus.

You are one of my biggest inspirations. I love singing, and want to become great at it. I have no money and no career, and this is what I would like to pursue... But everyone is always telling me that I'm not horrible but I can be wayyy better. What should I do?
kirkisthabombliketic 2 months ago
It's surprising how similar your past experiences were to mine, and I can totally relate. I was ridiculed and discouraged from singing by just about everyone I knew during my school years- my music teachers, even my own family- though they supported me in just about every other endeavour I took- compared my voice to a "bawling cow". Long story short- I now sing with 4 A Cappella groups (one competitive), and get nothing but compliments for my 3.5-octave range. I'm still no Eric though ;-)

Thank you for this Eric! I've always loved singing, but for a while, I grew up thinking it was something that you had to be born with, a sort of talent.
