But of course, in the 30's, Black Sabbath would have invoked Anti-Satanist riots at their concerts... The 50s and 60s had to happen in order for Sabbath to have become accepted.

This was diffinetely one of the most memorable days of my life I was only 16 then with a new drivers license, Black Sabbath was diffinetly the headline that April day hands down. I showed my kids the video and they said they wish they could of been there too. I may be 50 but I still listen to my Heavy Metal music and anything else LOUD. Awesome day

true, that Black Sabbath 'was' not metal (any more than a cow is a hamburger) - metal didn't exist yet. It is not true to say that they are 'just good hard rock' - they were the pioneers who took rock to a place it had never been, and in the process became to metal what cows are to hamburgers - you can have a cow without a hamburger, but you can't have a hamburger without a cow. So, have a cow, dude!

Black Sabbath are the Godfathers of Metal. Metal starts with them, hell Iommi lost his fingers in his metal shop. And because of that, every fucken band that tunes down their guitar can thank the heavens for that. When you look in the dictionary for Metal Gods, Ozzy, Iommi, Butler, and Ward are right there.
