  • The interviewer is right--the years had been good to him at this point (about 1985? His wife Joan Wilson had died by then, he mentions in the second half). It is shocking to see how badly he declines physically just a few years after this interview, and still while only in his late fifties. HE looks great here, and so charming and gracious.

  • @lizmil It is sad that two of the greatest Holmes suffered badly after loosing their wives; Cushing and Brett. It is so sad that these great actors, and according to almost everyone nice people, had to go through so much.

  • @kingbilgames I agree--I really liked Cushing also--another very underrated actor, I think.

  • If England will be taken over by the Chinese it will be goodbye to wit, humor and charm of this kind......

  • @winwin997 What has your somewhat racist comment got to do with Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Holmes? You should probably read 'The Adventure of the Yellow Face', by the way. It'll teach you that Holmes (and Arthur Conan-Doyle) was not racist.

  • I find Jeremy Brett a very calming presence. He seems tranquil, and of course his voice is always a pleasure to listen to.

  • Just watched the new bbc Sherlock re-imagining of hound of the baskervilles & just needed to pay a visit with dear Jeremy Brett. It is a brave soul indeed who dares to stand on the shoulders of giants. Just because you can doesnt mean you should.

  • Jeremy is so magnificent a man and actor. I am so sad I discovered him only after he passed. He is sorely missed. Rip, love

  • JB will always be with us.

He took one of the hardest roles ever written and made it totally his own. No actor could wish for a better epitaph.

    RIP legend.

  • sherlock holmes played the best jeremy brett ever

  • @whitecrane659 - Hahah....well said. Love it.

  • I would have loved to meet Jeremy such a charismatic chap, love his work and his commanding personality and voice

  • @bookishmuch yeah, remember the sussex vampire episode (or was the adaptation called 'the last vampyre'?) when he turned round at the beginning with the vampire fangs etc. etc. and Watson freaked out, he looked perfect for Dracula--reckon it's the slicked back hair personally :p

  • You dont see many guests run onto the set these days.

  • What does he say about his dad right after "He was a magnificent man"? Wow, near the end of this clip, it's almost a shock when you see him beginning to slip into Holmes, describing him. An incredible thing.

  • Jeremy's mother was half Quaker and half Irish? SO he's got some Irish blood in his family ;)...

  • Utterly unique;brilliant.I am always going to miss the great Jeremy Brett.Inspirational guy in his professional and personal life.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.I didn't know anything about Brett and now I'm becoming a fan thank to your videos.

  • @rkedu1 pure black and you dwell? What on earth are you on about?

  • An All Time Great Actor.

    Up There with the Greats.

  • He was incredible in that role, a rival to even Rathbone, I think! When I think of Holmes, i think of Mr, Brett. An outstanding actor who brought to life so many of Holme's adventures that I read a schoolboy. Thanks for posting this.

  • Absolutely brilliant !

  • A dignify interview. He deserved much more help and care when he went down. He totally captivated me since the first talk in the "Scandal in Bohemia". I felt like a strike in my soul.

  • When he "wears" Holmes... oh my god ! He's so great !

  • Jeremy Brett is so synonomous with Sherlock Holmes that it really surprises me to learn how much of Holmes is a character he developed so meticulously. You really can hear the difference of the lightness in Brett's voice and the serious and darker quality of Holmes' voice. Truly, one of the great actors.

  • He would've made a lovely cowboy. *sigh*

  • The moment he "wears" Holmes, it looks so immediately different!

  • Jeremy Brett is so fascinating! i could watch and listen to him all day long, i so would have loved just the opportunity to shake his hand. I miss him!!!

  • simply the best actor ever...at least for me..he potrays my 2nd father sherlock holmes and he play him quit perfectly...thanks for the upload..u shall be thanked by jeremy's soul..on being his fan..

  • What year was this?

  • god damn it I love Jeremy Brett! shit he is so awesome!

  • Also...

My favorite part, though, has to be from 6:32 on, when he laughs about being "more like Watson, personally", according to the interviewer, and then when he does an instant, brilliant transformation from himself, to Holmes, to Watson. How adorable he is as Watson! And how completely he assumes both characters! Now *that* is what I call acting!

  • Thank you so, so much for uploading this video to YouTube and sharing it with all of us. He was such a fabulous, talented and charismatic actor; it's wonderful to see him "out of character", as it were. Truly, as others have said, he was charming and had such a beautiful voice, and how gracious!

  • I know he said not to laugh, but I loled when he said he wanted to be a cowboy.

  • the way he turns from holmes to watson in a blink of an eye is quite scary it's so good - a fabulous actor no doubt - RIP :(

  • I love how he just "becomes" Sherlock Holmes. First he's his usual ebbullient self -- smiling, beautiful eyes sparkling; and then in less then a second the smile is wiped away, he sits up straighter, flickering smile, the sparkle in the eyes is replaced by a steely, piercing look, and all emotions disappear from his face. And then in an instant "Holmes" is gone and "Jeremy" returns.

  • I miss him.

  • I love it how he slips into Holmes in the middle of the interview when talking about him. Jeremy is just the best Holmes ever! And there's something about him that i just love. : ) Thanks for uploading

  • wow.. just rediscovered jeremy... oeh... brings back some memories... gonna leave it at that...

  • This interview has brought me to tears... he wasn't only an excelent actor and the best Sherlock Holmes ever, but a really lovely and sincere person. Everything was perfect about him... requiescat in pace my beloved Jeremy.

  • Brett was a homosexual.

  • @JuanMacready

    he was actually bisexual...

he loved his second wife very dearly until she died in 1985 of cancer (i just heard him talking about her and her death in another interview...so loveful)

but being heterosexual, bisexual or even homosexual, doesn't say anything about the person's personality or talent. how and in what way does it matter who you love or sleep with?

so what exactly is your point with that comment?

  • Was it all the smoking that caused her death?

  • @JuanMacready

i don't know what caused her cancer, he didn't speak about that, and i think that isn't any of our business anyways, since i believe that even famous people should be left alone in their private life.

the only thing he said about her illness was that it was rather sudden and ended very quickly, so he was relieved she didn't suffer any longer than she did.

and i really think that is enough information to all of us.

  • *high five*

  • He was bisexual, because you can't deny that he loved his wife Joan Sullivan, and must have been wrecked by her death.. but he was also the partner of Gary Bond. I'm not sure exactly how long their relationship lasted, but it was a long-term thing and rather serious. But I honestly don't see how his sexuality really has any business being addressed here. If it's being brought up to fuel a harmless discussion, then that's all well and fine; but when you fling out his sexuality like (cont.)

  • @TheyreAllAmazing

completely agree with you on that point! and i think we can be quite certain about the thing with gary bond, since his first wife was the one who "outed" him by telling about it in her book, and i don't think she did that to hurt his memory, since they stayed friends after breaking up.

but again, as you said, someones sexuality shouldn't matter to any of us, in fact it's not our damn business or right to judge anyone at all

  • @bunnybrain Elegantly put :D Subject on sexuality TERMINATED, because it's none of our beeswax!

  • (cont.) it's an insult, then that's where I find the offense. If it wasn't intended in such a way, then I apologize- but you must really be ready to defend yourself if you're going to exclaim something with such disrespect underlying the remark. Cheers.

  • I couldn't take Brett seriously because he reminded me too much of Kenneth Williams.

  • @JuanMacready

And you are a bigot with a fixation. Grow the hell up.

  • Brett is an inspiration.

  • Love JB so charming, intelligent, polite

Big respect to Terry Wogan for being a superb interviewer.

  • Peter Jeremy William Huggins, an amazing actor, an amazing person.

  • consider all of the moder "stars"-this age is sorely lacking an actor of such class, manners, eloquence, and intelligence. consider this, charlie sheen is the highest paid actor on tv-oh, how far we have fallen.

  • this man has a natural charisma.

  • wow, thx for posting this. to this day i know that Brett would have made the Perfect "Gandalf" - far superior to McKellan, imo. Sad that he never had that opportunity. the new Holmes movie is great too btw. wonder what Hardwicke thinks of it...

  • Watching Jeremy during this sad sad Chrismass season (I have to spend without my late best pal) has been my only joy. I plan to bring the entire Granada series and watch the eps on Christmass Eve and Day... in my pal's "Empty House."

  • this guy is sooooo talented, I can't get tiried of watching the Sherlock Holmes over n over just to see his acts: RIP:))

  • this guy is holmes, rip jeremy , 4 ever watching holmes xx

  • The Best Holme's ever and he seem's like a nice guy too!

  • LOL. Sorry, I am laughing at Terry Wogan's wig. LOL.

  • Pure class.

  • Thankyou so much for posting this interview. I have become a big fan of Jeremy, especially as Holmes, in the past few months and this was a joy to watch. I adore his voice and his accent too. Such a well-spoken man and obviously very sincere. I agree that he should have received more awards for his work. However, he has a cherished place in our hearts, and I think that that is the best award anyone could wish for.

  • I always find it amazing he never won any sort of awards. He was amazing, specially as Holmes. The best Holmes ever, and he never got recognised in his time for it. Awful

  • I love Jeremy's voice

  • So do I, it's lovely.

  • it so..............BRITISH!!!

  • Thanks you for posting these interviews. I would not have seen them otherwise. Brilliant!!

  • I love how he says 'Yes, I *addoored* Hollywood'.

    I addoore him!

  • "I expect every actor who works with me to have the body of a god and the voice of a full orchestra."

Mr Olivier, you got what you wanted!

  • Such a treat to watch him! yum, yum, yum, yum, and yum! ;-)

  • Yum, indeed!!

  • one of my favorite interviews. such a precious man...

  • Isn't it funny how the two greatest actors since Olivier both have the given name of Jeremy? Brett and Irons. I'm so glad we still have one of them with us.

  • i could listen to his voice all day! He has the most wonderful voice. Quite charismatic and handsome too ;^D His wife was a lucky lady, he was so devastated when she died D^:

Haha, Brett as Alan Ladd would have been HI-LARIOUS. He must have been a terrific Dracula. He's perfect for it.

He had so much insight into this character. For my two cents: it's important to realize Holmes' dark side to give depth to the character, but not to make it pre-eminent. "cracks in the marble." brilliant.RIP

  • Completely agree with you, thank you for the comment : )

  • @bookishmuch

And I think he would impersonate a great Ronald Colman if he starred in his biography film. =)

  • @bookishmuch

I mean, a film about Ronald Colman. ^^

  • hmm, I was wrong, it was late 80's...

  • this is obviously early 80's, before he lost his wife. He looks so much healthier and happier here then in the later sherlock holmes series.... wonderful man.

  • It's so strange, him saying "So many people have played Sherlock Holmes, what chance have I?" Little did he know, he was destined to become the greatest Holmes of all time. We love you, Jeremy!

  • Wonderful comment, WomaninBlack215, and we totally agree with you!

    Thanks so much. ^_^

  • amen

  • i mean freddy, not berty

  • Yes, Jeremy did a lot of work in his short life. We hope you enjoy finding much more of him here on YT. Jeremy has many wonderful fans who are posting more and more.... ^_^

  • it never occurred to me that berty in my fair lady was the same guy. wow.

  • I am too young to really remember when Sherlock Homes came out but do have it all on DVD. In my opinion he was one of the best british actors EVER. I never tire of watching him and listening to his amazing voice.

    RIP

  • Sorry for taking so long to reply, have been offline.

Zainsdad, many thanks for the fabulous comment!

We agree with you 100%. ^_^

  • So sad, Jeremy i will always believe has now gone to a much brighter and beautiful time and place, where he will shine out like the brightest star in the sky - RIP jeremy we all really loved you - XX

  • Bobbybolan, a touching comment indeed.

    Thank you so much! :)

We will always love our dear, Jeremy, always. ^_^

  • great to watch.thankyou very much fot putting this on

  • And thank you, Nikoy88. :)

    Happy you enjoyed it. ^_^

  • there were some terrific holmes' but jeremy nailed it for all time. too bad he didn't live longer. some of him died with his wife.

  • Couldn't agree with you more, majorhepcat! ^_^

Thank you for the lovely comment. :)

  • :-D great to see snippets of holmes

  • Happy you enjoyed it! ^_^

  • It is 12 September today... On that day Jeremy went to sleep for the last time in his life and never woke up again... And with him he took enermous amount of love and kindness to the other world. I always think that Sherlock Holmes, himself, died on that autumn day!

  • Beautiful comment!

We thank you and appreciate it very much! ^_^

  • oh but he has such lyricism in his ways ^_^ the very best holmes i have ever seen.

  • Thank you, we totally agree! ^_^

  • I absolutely loved the series on the television and was captivated by Jeremy's good looks even at a young age. I loved the way he played Sherlock Holmes, his manorisms. I used to wait to see him smile, in character of course! So glad to see the series running again. xx

  • We are happy you enjoyed it. :) Oh yes, Jeremy was a stunning man indeed. That smile and he acted the part of SH perfectly. I must admit, all of us here in Jeremy land are quite captivated as well...LOL :) Thanks for the lovely comment.

  • This man is my idol. I act like him, I have the same intensity as him in everything I do.

  • He is ours as well. :) A wonderful man in all aspects. Thanks for the lovely and candid comment, it is much appreciated. :)

  • wanted to say thank you so much for posting this. i never met the man and i so wish i did. i tried to write to him in 2000 and i foung out he had sadly died. i was very upset which is strange really. how many actors get to you like that? thanks again for a wonderful post.

  • You are welcome. :) Yes, I'm sure we all wish we could have met him and I really do understand about you being upset. You are at home here with all of us Jeremy lovers. Thanks for the wonderful and open comment, my dear. :)

  • Even though I always thought before that Basil Rathbone was the definitive Sherlock, when I saw Brett in the series, I fell in love! Then I saw My Fair Lady and War and Peace again, and there he was when young!!! I was so excited. I wish he could have stayed around and did every one of the Sherlock Holmes stories. RIP, dear Jeremy.

  • A lovely comment, thank you so much. :) I'm sure we all agree and wish that he would have been able to do so. Ah, dear Jeremy...

  • A charming and generous man. He absolutely made the character his own. Such heartfelt creativity and artistry is a rare thing.

  • What a beautiful comment! Thank you. :) We agree with you completely. :)

  • Thanks for posting this! There is no doubt in my mind at all that Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I was lucky enough to meet him in person outside the Wyndham's theatre. He was extremely patient, kind & friendly with a charming hint of eccentricity. He is very sadly missed, but the wonderful Granada series is a permanent reminder of what a gifted actor her was. There is no one to touch him as Sherlock Holmes!

  • Beautiful comment! We couldn't agree with you more. :) Lucky you, indeed. You don't happen to have pictures of your meeting, do you? If so, need I say we would LOVE to see them. He was a wonderful man and we love him to bits. Thanks again for such a wonderful comment. :)

  • Thank you for that! I really feel very lucky & privileged to have seen Jeremy Brett on stage as Sherlock Holmes. He was electrifying! He very kindly signed my poster & programme which I treasure. I believe a few photos were taken, but sadly they didn't come out as the stage door was in a gloomy courtyard! Often one is disappointed when meeting actors in person, but certainly not Jeremy Brett who was really sweet & very modest. I'm sure he would be touched by your dedication like me!

  • Many thanks again. If you have the pics, I have photoshop and can do quite a bit with it.

Even if they are dark, all might not be lost, it is always worth a shot. :) I'm very happy to hear your personal account, thanks so much for sharing with us. We love to hear anything about our sweet Jeremy. :)

  • Thanks for that! I'll try & find the photos some time. I remember that he wore a silk smoking hat with a tassle! I thought that Jeremy looked immaculate on the "Wogan" interview, but I was very disappointed to see him with an earring on a "Pebble Mill At One Interview", which really didn't suit him at all.

  • Thank you for uploading this. ^^

    Gosh, Wogan looks horrifically young!

  • You are welcome, katharosdrakkina. :)

    Happy you enjoyed it.

  • There are 2 actors well known fr playin holmes. Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. And Nigel Bruce and Edward Hardwricke...JB is sick (gr8)

  • We must agree the JB is great indeed, Umaransari17. Thank you. :)

  • We are running behind again so sorry for my late reply, but are you referring to 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes'? I only wish there would be a copy as it would be priceless to all of us indeed. As you gathered, he is my very favorite of all time. :) Thank you for the lovely comment and let me know if I have answered your question. :) If anyone out there recorded the play, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

  • u definitly answred me..

  • thank you for being so nice and replying to comments.....

i think he is one of my top 3 acors of all time....is there a copy of dvd of jeremy in the play?

  • was JB wearing teeth brace?

  • No, not that I am aware of. It is probably a shadow or the quality of the clip causing an optical illusion. :)

  • I could watch him as Holmes all day long... and indeed I do sometimes. He was superb.

My two favourite male Britsh actors are Jeremy Brett and David Niven, with Richard Todd in the running as well.

    Thanks for putting this on.

  • Thank you, FSA1990. Lovely comment. We could watch him all day as well and sometimes do. LOL He is our very favorite as I'm sure you noticed. You are welcome and thank you too. :)

  • Wow, what can I say? I had no idea Jeremy was such a love. Been a fan for years, knew he was Freddy in MFL, but didn't realize how darling he personally was...

who are you? did you know him, work with him? I know a woman from England who sublet an apartment years ago which he owned. I was gah gah that she had actually met him. She thought he was terribly odd, but then, she is quite conservative and proper. Heavens.

It is a weird meloncholy sweetness to see him as himself.

  • Oh my goodness, that was so wonderful when he transformed into Holmes~

He was such a great actor! To be able to go from his gregarious self to that [wonderful] isolated creature Holmes is in itself marvelous! :D

That's not even beginning to mention the other things he's done, and the spirit he did them with~

  • Simply amazing, wasn't he?! Happy you enjoyed it. Oh, so full of spirit and life, that is/was our darling man indeed. Thank you for your very lovely comment, my dear. :)

  • Indeed! And you're welcome. It was only fitting to leave a lovely comment on a vid of a lovely man like JB! ;)

  • Very kind of you...take care. :)

  • My god... just look at him at 6:55 You can see him change in front of you and he IS Holmes. Unbelievable, what a great actor... such a loss.

  • Well stated, EddyBergman! Thank you... :)

  • Happy you enjoyed it, MissXenia. We loved to see him do that as well. What a treat we thought! Thank you. You said it well, 'what an actor'!!! Yes, which makes every piece of Jeremy that we can get our hands on a true gem.

  • Jeremy Brett is forever the one and only Holmes for me. I followed the Holmes series from the beginning and some of the episodes are even better than the original stories. (I've read all of them)

  • EddyBergman, we agree with you completely, thank you. Well stated. :)

  • Thank you very much :)

  • he is dead?

    :(

  • I am very sorry to say yes, he died on September 12, 1995 at his home in Clapham Common. We can all help keep his memory alive and the wonderful legacy he has left us will not be forgotten. He was a top notch person and one of the finest actors ever to grace stage and screen (the finest in my opinion). We miss him so.....thank goodness we had him at all.

  • JBrettsgirl, I share your sorrow, for me Jeremy was and will stay not just the best SH but the most sophisticated man, a man who has had a gift to inspire one...

  • I agree with you completely. :)

He inspires me every day and will continue to do so throughout my life. Always....

  • This is great! The story about his father is very lovely. I love his description of "wearing Holmes" at the end- I think this is the only time I've seen him switch from Jeremy to Sherlock and back to Jeremy again within the span of 20 seconds! fantastic! Thank You!

  • To all of you: We are behind, sorry for taking so long to respond.

Bakerstreetbookworm. We are very happy you enjoyed it. :) You are welcome and thank you so much. Yes, he was amazing (loved the switching as well) and we love him to bits!

  • This is wonderful! I cannot believe he did Holmes for us and then...Watson, of all things.

Honestly, I've just started watching the series, and I never read the books before. I can truly say this is one of the best shows I've seen, and he is one of the best actors I've had the pleasure of watching. The world has lost a brilliant actor and a great human being; I really wish I could have met him (I was only 6 when he died!) Thanks for te interview!

  • prezjackie, you are more than welcome. :) We echo your sentiments 100% and thank you for such a beautiful comment. I hope you will find many Jeremy Brett vids & clips here to your liking. He was simply 'the best'. :)

  • So wonderful..he was such a genuine human being.

I love to see Jeremy as himself, and that great laugh and darling smile. Ahhhh....

I watched Part 2 also, what a champ he was to share his personal experience regarding his wife's death.

JBrettsgirl - I just cannot thank you enough for all these wonderful clips!!

  • Omneignotum, genuine is the 'perfect' word. We do as well. Thank you and you are most welcome. Sorry for taking soooooo long in responding. Take care, my dear... :)

  • Yesterday really was a sad day, the anniversary of the loss of a very great man. Good humoured, modest and the rarest of things in this day and age- a true gentleman, as is illustrated in this wonderful interview. Heaven gained a very bright star on the 12th September 1995, it's just such as shame that we had to lose one.

  • Thank you! Such a lovely comment and very true indeed.

I hope you have visited livejournal to see the many wonderful tributes there. Search Jeremy Brett and the community is also named that as well. Once again, my heart felt thank yous. We miss him more than words can say! :)

  • Such a fine actor. Olivier's obvious successor. What a terrible loss.

  • Very true, a terrible loss indeed. Wasn't he magnificent? Many thanks for you beautiful comment, darling. :)

  • really nice..i keep coming back to this because i luv watchin jeremy as himself even more than seeing him in a role. it's great to watch interviews with him like this one - he always has sumthing to say that's worth listening to, and such an awesome person, really sweet, and that's so rare in anyone as rich and famous and gud looking as he was...he was amazing.

  • Well I must say, we agree with you completely! :)

Thank you for the lovely sentiments about our divine Jeremy. He was truly a wonderful man, in every respect and hopefully, you watched part 2 as well. Many thanks, twiggyblueXX! :)

  • You are welcome and thank you, brushgang4. :) Make sure and watch the second part as well. It's posted. We know, we miss him dreadfully indeed! We were lucky to have him at all, wouldn't you agree? It's lovely seeing that people treasure him the way we do. Take care now.. :)

  • Well done JBrettsgirl, another great JB treasure, thank you for sharing. Just makes us miss him all the more that's the trouble! Brushgang4

  • Absolutely brilliant, watching him hop into Holmes' character and then into Watson and then back to Holmes again. It's always amazing to watch a good actor just transform before your eyes into his character.

  • Ahh, thank you paceetrate for the oh so true comment. We couldn't agree with you more. :) Lovely!

  • jbrettgirl do you know wen youll get part 2 on not rushing you are anything im just bit inpatient wen it comes to jeremy

  • Thanx again J&H,Looking forward to seing part 2 when its up on youtube.

    Regards

    Jim Clark

  • ...well, I don't think he looks like a cowboy, I think it's one of the few roles he couldn't be able to perform! he looks like a duke whatever he plays! He was a british gentleman in every move and in every word: english from hair to feet!

many many thanks for this pearl J&H!

  • No, he doesn't look like a cowboy! Very true, Anna, he was a true british gentleman, with a seething volcano just beneath the surface, hence, his brettishness. Just one of the many reasons we all love him. Very true, a duke indeed! You are welcome, sweetest Anna! Thank you! :)
