But part of it, which is South Ossetia decided not to join the georgians, instead they created their own autonomous region. The civilians and government within that area were attacked by the georgians hoping they can rid of them completely. Hence, why the russians are in that region- to protect the south ossetia from being massacred. In the end the russians did warn georgia of the consequence if they attack ossetia.
